Chapter numbers with a fixed prefix

I need the following kind of chapter titles (Heading 1)
Part A blahblahbla
where "A" is the regular number but prefixed by the static text "Part". Is there any way in Pages to accompilsh this? The only thing I am able to do is either have "A" etc or a textbullet ("Part") but not the combination of both. And lower level headings (2, 3, etc) should not be prefixed by the word "Part" of course.
Any help deeply apreciated
---markus---

There are Text bullets which would allow you to start with "Part" but you can't then combine that with numbered lists in the following indent of the line.
I can't imagine that it will be such a burden to have to label this level manually, or simply omit the redundent "Part". The division should be obvious from the context.
It is something I find totally redundant in tutorials when people repeatedly label things Step 1, Step 2, Step 3 etc. They are just 1, 2, 3 etc and obviously steps, or whatever else you want to describe them.
Imagine adding "Point" in front of every • bullet. "Dash" in front of every -.

  • Saving slices with a fixed prefix of choice

    [Edit: I just discovered a wonderful Batch Rename option in Bridge, so this is a good workaround for me]
    I have a file with many slices. The file has several layer comps and they just change the color cast with hue-sat adjustment, so they are named "green", "yellow", "red", etc. I must save the slices for each layer comp into globally unique named files, because later they will be mixed all together on a web site. Ideally, the names would be like this:
    green_slice1.jpg
    green_slice2.jpg
    yellow_slice1.jpg
    yellow_slice2.jpg
    where "green" and "yellow" are after layer comp name and the rest is slice name.
    I looked into the "Other" Output Settings options, File Naming section but there seems to be no option for layer comp prefix or any user invented prefix that would enable me to save them to the same folder and not override (I wouldn't mind typing manually the color name, but there is no option to "use an arbitrary word of your choice"). So it looks like the only solution is to save each layer comp to a separate document and then use the Save for Web and Devices in each document with the doc. Name filename prefix. But I am asking here just in case that maybe there is some workaround, because making copies of such files is a bit artificial, just for saving and then delete and a bit of waste of time.

  • Getting chapter numbers to show up in the TOC with the page numbers...

    First, thank you all very much for posting replies.  This forum is wonderful.
    I have a doc that needs to have the chapter numbers show up with the page numbers in the TOC.
    I insert the <$chapnum> and <$currentpagenum> in the footer, and I get 1-1 to show up.
    To include the 1-1 in the TOC, do I have to edit the Reference Page, or is there another way.
    Thank you SO much for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thank you VERY much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Got it to work.  However, my TOC will not update with the new building blocks.
    Have played and played with it.  Any suggestions?
    Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Footnotes - restart numbering with every chapter (workaround)

    Hello Everyone,
    AFAIK there is no way how to reset the footnote numbering in ID CS4 (it would be ideal to have any possibility to choose the paragraph style, which could invoke that). There are available only three options for reseting, every IMHO quite useless for double sided documents - page, pair of pages and division (I have it localized so names can differ). My chapters starts always on the recto page. If individual 'divisions' would be created for every chapter and reseting set to the beginning of each that division, as the division starts on the verso page !!! (cannot be changed), it resets footnote numbers of the previous chapter if they appear on that verso page. But I agree that for single side documents this option would be sufficient for me.
    Is there any workaround how to restart footnotes numbering with every chapter in double sided documents? Could it be scripted? I really need this...

    There you go. Don't forget, where it says "head", fill in the paragraph style name for your start of chapter style.
    The first two lines delete ALL EXISTING SECTIONS, which may come in handy. If you defined some sections yourself (e.g., to change page numbering to roman numerals for some front matter) and wish to preserve them, you must DELETE these lines -- and manually delete all sections made earlier by the script as well.
    //DESCRIPTION:Magic Section Marker
    // A Jongware Script 8-Sep-2010
    // Dangerous Curve: Remove *ALL* existing Sections
    while (app.activeDocument.sections.length > 1)
         app.activeDocument.sections[-1].remove();
    // The script Proper
    // Find the style using the regular Find command
    app.findTextPreferences = null;
    app.findTextPreferences.appliedParagraphStyle = "head"; // <- Change Me.
    list = app.activeDocument.findText();
    // Loop over the found items
    while (list.length)
        // Fetch next item -- a Text -- and get the Frame it's in
        next = list.pop().parentTextFrames[0];
        // It might be nested somewhere 'deep' so go up and up in the chain until ..
        while (!(next instanceof Page || next instanceof Spread || next instanceof Application))
            if (next instanceof Character)
                next = next.parentTextFrames[0];
            else
                next = next.parent;
        // .. we find the actual page. First check if there isn't already a section ..
        if (next instanceof Page &&
            next.appliedSection.pageStart != next)
            // No -- let's add one! All settings are set to sensible defaults, it appears.
            app.activeDocument.sections.add(next);

  • Automated NUMBERING with Chapter Indexes?

    I've figured how to use the Create Chapter Index command in the Menu menu, but subsequent menu pages keep restarting the numbering of chapters (chapters that I have entered using the Add Chapter POints at Intervals command).
    Is there a way I can get each page to automatically continue chapter numbering? i.e., so the second page of a 6 chapter index starts with chapter 7?
    I've only just figured the basics now . . .

    I have not used this much, but there are two things I would look at.
    First, consider doing all chapter setting before doing the chapter indexes.  (I may be misunderstanding this problem.  If so, ignore.)
    I would also look at help regarding button offset.

  • Need page numbers starting with chapter numbers.

    Hello  every one,
    I'm in the work of making  user manual with different autonumber paragraph headings.(eg.1.xyz,2.abc,......).I have applied a running head header and has to apply a footer with page number in the format paragraph heading autonumber. pagenumber.ie - 1.1,1.2,........and when  second paragraph heading starts it should be 2.1,2.2,.......i tried inserting variables like <chapnum>,<section num> but its not giving the desired o/p.How i can resolve this problem?
    Plz help me...

    crazdobe,
    If your goal is to restart the page numbering inside a single file, you are out of luck.
    Restarting page numbering with the beginning of a new section seems only useful if the heading of that section start at a new page; therefore you could just split the document for every new section and then control page numbering as you like.
    If I have misunderstood your requirement, please share more detail.

  • IDCS3  TOC want chapter numbers in book TOC

    Hi - I'm brand new to this forum so please bear with me . . .
    I'm working on a long manual. Each chapter has a TOC, which I've been able to format the way I want it (e.g., Overview . . . . 5-2).
    In the TOC for the book, I can't figure out how to include the chapter number. I've read everything I can find about the subject but after spending hours I'm giving up. I've checked the Include Prefix when Number Pages check box for each chapter.
    I've tried lots of things in the Between Entry and Number menu. There's no character symbol for chapter number and I've tried copying and pasting it in. That hasn't worked either.
    I'm almost ready to resort to copying and pasting in the TOC from each chapter - there are 17. Yikes!
    All advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sonya (fed up ID CS3 user in VA)

    Hi Sonia,
    You can directly use position() instead of storing in variables (Refer Template Builder for Word - TOC marker in foreach loop for an example).
    But if you want to you variables for some other reasons, then use xsl context specific variables.
    Instead of <?position()?>: <?xdoxslt:set_variable($_XDOCTX,’H1’, position())?> use
    *<?variable@incontext:c1;position()?>*
    and instead of <?XDOXSLT:GET_VARIABLE($_XDOCTX,’H1’)?>.DEPARTMENT LEVEL: .... use
    *<?$c1?>.DEPARTMENT LEVEL: (formatted as Heading1).*
    So on the whole it wold be similar to
    <?for-each:group_name?>
    <?variable@incontext:c1;position()?>
    <?$c1?>.DEPARTMENT LEVEL:
    Chapter contents
    <?end for-each?>
    Now update your TOC (right click -> update field).
    Now you should be able to see the chapter numbers both in TOC and report body.
    Hope this helps.

  • Chapter Numbers in a table of contents

    Hi Experts,
    I'd like to add a table of contents (TOC) including chapter numbers in my template. For example:
    Table of Contents
    1. Title
    1.1 Sub-Title
    1.1.1 SubSub-Title
    To do so:
    •     I created a template with a table of contents.
    •     In the report body, I determine the chapter number using <?position()?>: <?xdoxslt:set_variable($_XDOCTX,’H1’, position())?>
    •     Once the chapter number determined, I write it in the title: <?XDOXSLT:GET_VARIABLE($_XDOCTX,’H1’)?>.DEPARTMENT LEVEL: <?SUBNODE_NM?> - STORE: <?STORE_UNIT_ID?> on which I applied the heading style required
    =>     When I launch the report, the chapter number appears correctly in the report body but not in the TOC. In the TOC, I only get the title chapter.
    Any idea how I could do this?
    Thank you in advance,
    Sonia.

  • Page/chapter numbering probs in material converted from Word

    Situation: Need to convert ~300 pages (multiple files) of Word into structured Frame. I'm not very familiar with structured Frame (but am working on this), and am a long-time user of nonstructured. Moving Word 2007 files into Frame9 (in TCS2).
    Problem: Chapter/page numbering. No matter what I try, including copies of a file that demonstrably works, one copy does not accept the "Continued" settings for page numbering. It resets the TOC to page 1. Copies of that file added to the TOC also reliably reset page numbering to 1. When I go in to see what's going on I find that the Numbering dialog for each problem file shows it mysteriously reset to start page numbering at 1. (These copies are nearly identical, differing only in a numeral in one heading to remind me what chapter each is file supposed to be.)
    Further, when I added an autonumbered ChapterTitle paragraph at the top of each file to test chapter numbering, the page numbering problem resolved itself (!) but the chapters don't increment as expected. Numbering string: "C:Chapter <n=1>" for Chpt1 and "C:Chapter <n+>" for the rest of them.
    Test setup: Saw this in production files and stepped back to use a simple Word source file as a test. Constructed several Normal paragraphs, a bulleted list, and a numbered list, and two heading levels (Heading1, Heading2) in this file. Saved; closed. Opened the file in Frame (Structured). Created several nearly identical copies and added all to a book file. Added a TOC to the book. Set the numbering: Chpt1 starts Chapter and Page at 1 and all others are set to "Continued" in both categories.
    Added the ChapterTitle paragraph to each file after conversion.
    In one experiment I applied several of the "target" Frame paragraph formats. Target formats were supplied by writer who works primarily in a  structured Frame setup that is similar to the one planned for the  converted material. In one file all paragraphs were set to their Frame equivalents. In others there was a mix of original (as brought over from Word) and Frame formats. Made no apparent difference.
    Questions: Is this something about structured vs. unstructured? About  structured Frame WRT conversion from Word? Either way, has anyone else  seen (more to the point, *resolved*) similar?
    Thanks in advance for any insight!
    Anne

    OK--
    WRT "<$chapnum>": check, thanks for the reminder. (Yes, I agree that chapter/page numbering tabs are different items.) :-)
    To clarify: yes, the idea is a Word > Frame conversion. The process stumbled upon so far starts with opening Word files in unstructured Frame. (I'd never done it, either---never had a need to try. Somebody new to Frame asked if it was possible, so we experimented and voila!) I have recommended dropping files into .mif and then resaving as .fm in order to lose any artifactual Word stuff.
    Step 2 is applying appropriate Frame paragraph styles from a supplied list, and creating book files. (The page numbering issue resolved once I added a ChapterHead paragraph.  Using the <$chapnum> tag handles the remaining chapter number  issue.)
    In theory Step 3 will be the move into handling the fully-converted material as structured Frame documents. The key point, though, appears to be the conversion table. I get this from a WritersUSA article by Alan Houser at http://www.writersua.com/articles/frame/index.html:
    FrameMaker provides a mechanism called a conversion table to automate  much of the task of legacy document conversion. The conversion table  maps unstructured FrameMaker paragraph and character formats to  elements, and allows you to automatically nest groups of elements. If  your legacy documents were created using a style-based authoring tool  (typically FrameMaker or Word [!]) and your authors have used those styles  consistently, you may be able to automate 80%-90% of the conversion  process. If your legacy documents include a significant amount of manual  or ad-hoc formatting, the conversion will be substantially more  tedious.
    Looks like my group will have to create this.
    Thanks, all, for the help. :-)

  • Indesign CC: Chapter Numbering Not Updating

    I read this...
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5536663
    And determined that I mightbe experiencing a similar problem. I have two different master pages.
    Master A -  Chapter Pages - I use this for chapter title pages where the margins are slightly different. This is also where the chapter number is disaplyed.
    Master B - Body Pages - This is where I have the body copy of my chapters. e.g H2 trough H6, Basic Paragraph, Lists, figure references, etc.
    All my chapters are built this way. Including my appendicies.
    Heres my book page numbering options...
    Every chapter is displaying as "1 Chapter Title Goes Here"
    The above chapter is infact Chapter 2 Deployment.
    Heres the Chapter Number Style, or Heading - Chapter Title (H1)
    You'll see I've assigned a specifc list for the numbers to use. It's titled "Chapters" under lists.
    My question is...
    Is this happening becase I'm using two different text frames in my masters? You can see what my .indd page structure looks like in the pages screen shot.
    My figure references aren't taking the chapter number, I assume because the chapter numbers aren't updating. Is this true?
    How can I fix this without having to redo the Master-A pages or using a single master layout?
    Any help is ALWAYS appreciated, and thanks for your time.
    Heres an idea of my book structure.

    So I took a look at the text frames, they're all linked properly. See screen cap.
    This is what Chapter 2 looks like...
    The text is not located on the master pages. It is however placed inside of the text frame which the master pages host. i.e The master pages have their margins and textfields. When I create a new page, it includes a text field. The screen caps above show Master-A and Master-B threaded together.
    As for the page numbering... They're generated using lists and automatic numbering via paragraph styles...
    See the screen caps in my first post.
    And heres the chapter title line selected. Note the number is not selected.
    So... I just checked the Page Numbering Options...
    And found this....
    Ummm.... *face desk* Looks like I had document chapter numbering set to start at Chapter Number: 1.
    I'll update and see if that helps.

  • Chapter numbering - how to get rid of it

    Is there an easy way to suppress the chapter numbering of
    imported topics? I cannot imagine that the majority of help authors
    want topics that are imported from Word documents to maintain the
    chapter numbers.
    I noticed these numbers are always included in a specific
    way. The corresponding lines begin with
    <h1>1.<span..>  </span>
    , i.e., two non-breaking spaces in the span. That means it would
    probably be possible to use an advanced search & replace tool
    to remove the numbering, not a very nice workflow though. Are you
    awaye of any other method?

    This sounds like a style mapping issue. You could start by
    reading
    this

    depending on which RH version you are using.

  • How to add chapter numbers as well as page numbers?

    Hi. I have a large text document with numbered pages. But I can't figure out how to keep those numbers sequential and add running chapter numbers (automatically) at the same time. Right now, I have to number the chapters manually. (At over 70 chapters, it becomes quite inconvenient to have to renumber them when adding or subtracting content.) Help!?
    e

    Pages does not have an auto-chapter numbering system.
    Your manual solution is it until Apple gives us something better.
    Pages may not be the best solution for you if this is important.

    Douglas,
    I assume that the chapter numbering works correct through all the chapters, and only the TOC numbering is wrong. Correct?
    In this case you shouldn't have an own (independent) numbering definition in your TOC paragraph styles, but READ the original numbering from the respective paragraphs/chapters. You do this by adding the <$paranum> variable to the TOC reference page, so the entry/entries there should read equal or similar to:
    <$paranum> (Tab) <$paratext> (Tab) <$pagenum>
    Define the tabulators for the TOC paragraph styles as if there was a numbering definition, and the number read from the chapters will appear correctly formatted in the TOC.
