Chapter thumbnail stills, iDVD 7

I am trying to create thumbnails in iDVD 7 for the Scene tabs.
Chapter markers were created from FCE export as QT with Chapter markers
iDVD 7 themes "Modern"
Sometimes this works, some times it does nto and I can not work out why
I have initially the 'tree' view ' selected.
I choose the slide that has the Scenes, and click on the thumbnail
Clicking it again, brings up a Small Info pane with a slider and a tick box for the "Still Image"
BUT this is where it often goes wrong.  Sometimes I can use the scroll bar to select the image I need..but very often it only alows me to select a thumb from the first chapter only ?
Sometimes I can select from teh correct chapter..but often, it won't work.
OK, so it is possible to go back to FCE and export individual slides for this, but it sems a long way to do it when there is a way built in to iDVD that works some of the time.

Create a new project, add the same movie and check to see if you can set the frame for each chapter successfully there.  If you can then you may have to stick with the new project.
However, you can try this  basic troubleshooting fix:
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
3 - launch IDVD and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

  • Inserting Chapter Markers for iDVD

I have a few simple questions about inserting Chapter Markers in FCE, and what exactly is happening. I've looked for the answers in two books, and the Help files, but still have my questions:
In the "Edit Markers" box, the first field is "Name." Is this the name of the Chapter Marker that gets exported?
The next field is "Comment." Is this for my info only? Or does this have something to do with the Chapter Marker getting exported correctly?
If I press the "Add Chapter Marker" button, it adds <CHAPTER> into the Comment field. Is this necessary for the marker to be a Chapter Marker?
Why is there a space in front of " <CHAPTER>"? Is this necessary?
If I add a comment to the Comment field, should it go before or after <Chapter>, or does it matter?
I rarely have used Chapter Markers, and these should be easy questions for someone. Thanks for your help.

First of all, this is the Final Cut Pro forum but the following works the same for both programs
When using iDVD and you create chapter markers, dropping your QT export into iDVD, using one of the provided themes, will create a main screen with Play Movie and (something like)Chapter Menus. The Menu page(s) follow your chapters, including any Name you assign: So, If you backspace "Name" and type Scene One, that will appear in your chapter page
Far as I know, Comments is for your eyes only. I've never really used it but I don't see anywhere in iDVD where it shows up; not 100 per cent sure
<CHAPTER> is where you assign a number. Do not delete <CHAPTER> it will not show up in your menu. But if you type Chapter One, that shows up with the Chapter Name
Most iDVD themes automatically create a first chapter for you, called Begin. You can change that inside iDVD
You do not have to assign your chapter a name. That is your call
Other things to note: Create chapter markers in the Timeline. Export as Quicktime Movie, not any version of Quicktime Conversion. In the Export menu, select Chapter Markers.

  • Movie chapter thumbnails gone after 4.2 update

    Hello fellow iPad users.
I've looked around the internet for this and haven't found anything about this.
I had three movies on my iPad when I updated to 4.2. I went to play one after I updated and noticed that the chapter thumbnails are now gone. The chapter title is there but the image thumbnail is gone, replaced by a black square.
I tried removing and resyncing the movies as well as adding new ones all to no avail. I just can't get the darn things to show up again.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks fellows!

    Hi
Same problem, but found a solution.
Instead of selecting individual films/TV programs from the Sync menus, put what you want to sync into a Playlist ie: iPad Movies, but only one video at a time. Sync the Playlist each time you add a new video.
This seems to work for me. I have 3 playlists for movies, TV and music videos and when I sync this way I don't seem to have a as big a problem with the wrong thumbnails. Sometimes it happens but not as bad. Hopefully someone can expand on this and figure out a permanent fix as seen a apple isn't.
    Hope it helps.

  • HOW TO ADD CHAPTER MARKERS FOR IDVD

how do you add chapter markers for iDVD import?

FCP does not have that capability. You can add chapter markers in Compressor, but that would be another recompression step, and you can dd them in GarageBand. Perhaps it might be best to add them in iDVD. Can you add them in iDVD?
It would be an excellent feature request to have them in FCP, though I'm not sure how they would implement it.

  • Possible To Add Chapter Markers To iDVD Slide Shows?

Is it possible to add chapter markers to iDVD slideshows, or is that only possible in movies?
I have a slideshow prepared with over 300 photos, and would really like to be able to create chapter markers [starting points] so a viewer doesn't have to click through so many photos to find a particular photo. This probably cannot be done, but I didn't want to proceed with my project, IF it is a possibility, and I am just missing some quick way to do this.

The only way to create chapters in a slideshow is to create the slideshow as a movie in iPhoto or iMovie. This way you can create Chapter markers that will show up in menus.
Each slide in an iDVD created slideshow is actually a different Chapter - that's why some set-top DVD players drop the audio on slide changes and why each slideshow can only have 99 slides.

  • Inserting Chapter Templates in iDVD

We are doing a wedding slideshow DVD and trying to insert themed templates with captions and "drag and drop" photos within the slideshow -- (i.e. "Baby Pictures" and "The College Years") but we can only figure out how to put one at the beginning. Can someone assist with inserting them throughout the DVD?

  • Exporting QT with Chapter markers for iDVD

When I export a QT with Chapter markers for iDVD I get one movie file then a number of "AV" files - what are these and what do I do with them?
    workflow as follows:
1.Place chapter markers in timeline using mm the Add Chapter Markers
    2. set in/out points in timeline
    3. export quicktime movie
    4. select include Chapter Markers and include audio/video
    5. do NOT select recompress all frames
    6. DO select make self contained movie.
    7. Open exported movie file in Quicktime and chapter markers are present
    8. import ONLY the movie file to iDVD (NOT the AV files?) and answer yes to read all chapter markers
    9. burn seems to work fine but when I playback on DVD player there is digital stuttering in the picture
Any ideas on how to remedy the problem?
    thanks in advance
    patrick

The project is only 75 minutes. Do think it is the codec that iDVD is using that is causing the stutter. I assumed that it always encodes using MPG2.
Any idea what the AV files are?
When I export as an uncompressed DV stream the file is 15 GB.
When I export as uncompressed QT I get one file (movie) at 2.5 GB then
5 more "AV" files that are each 2.5 as well. So when I import the movie file without the AV files am I missing something?
Should I look into DVD Studio Pro? I have version 1.5 but I am fairly unfamiliar with it.

  • Cannot edit chapter names in iDVD after importing movie from iMovie

I have no trouble customizing iDVD (version 5.0.1) menu page after importing iMovie directly (instead of going to QT as interim step). But the names of the chapter markers are file names for video clips, title pages and transitions. The iMovie help says to change the names in the space next to the 'thumbnails' of chapters found in iDVD. THERE ARE NO THUMBNAILS. And there is no way I could find, using menu options or clicking on the chapter frames shown in 'map' mode to type in anything.
There are other problems, like getting rid of the default "Travel Cards' stuff...like I can drop a still photo in for a custom background, but the default 'celluloid design' banner still rolls up in previw mode. If you can also help with that, great. But the main thing right now is getting these chapter names change.

    VJK,
You are the third person who has taken a crack at this. I don't know if you read my last reply which detailed the situation. But if you did and the 'menu' you refer to is the main menu page, that is not the problem; I can change text there. I am talking about the submenu for 'Scene Selections', which I have only been able to access via map mode.
In map mode I cannot highlight the names. Period. Can't do it no matter where I place the cursor or carefully click.
In preview mode, when the Scene Selection sub-menu page appears whenever you drag the cursor over a chapter name it automatically highlights so any clicking will either do nothing (if a real careful click, trying to highlight text and not trigger off play of the movie chapter) or just start play for the movie chapter.
So...how does this newbie get to the 'menu' you mention where I can click on a chapter name in order to type new text?
You will be able to change the names in the menu, but
depending upon your mouse, etc, it can be a little
    particular.
Place the cursor at the very beginning of the word
you want to change. Click once .. this should hi-lite
the word. Click again, it should make the word go
blue (or in a blue box) then you can delete and
    re-type.
Be sure to save the proj
I have found that even after saving and successfully
burning the project, if I return to it later the
changes seem to have gone away ... so if you go back
to it later, just double check that everything is
    kosher

  • TS1233 How do I get chapter markers for iDVD from Final Cut Pro X?

It seems like a tremendous short-coming that Final Cut Pro X doesn't allow for chapter markers that can be used in iDVD or DVD Pro. Surely there is some way to get used-defined markers from Final Cut Pro X or at least re-define the Final Cut Pro X markers in the DVD authoring applications. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have decided to say that my problem is solved by the work-a-rounds that have been submitted. I STILL don't like the fact tha Apple has decided that DVD's are a thing of the past and therefore (chapter) markers are of no use. That may be true is the publishing world of YouTube, Vimeo, etc. but it certainly NOT true for many of us advanced hobbyists that still like distribution on DVD's to our friends or a more localized (private) community -- especially to those who are not computer literate. If Apple wants to exclude us from their customer base, I suggest that base will become even smaller than their competitors who still have chapter markers in their products. I'll get off my soapbox now. . .

  • Problems with rendering a 16:9 project with Chapter markers to iDVD

    Hi there
I'm having an issue where I'm trying to export a DVD for a client with chapter markers as it's required. Problem is when I put the project into iDVD the project squishes back to 4:3 ratio.
One solution that was on here was to use the Quicktime Conversion to create a 16:9 video however when I use Quicktime conversion I lose the chapter markers
I need to have both 16:9 ratio and Chapter Markers in the DVD how do I overcome this problem?

    Anamorphicizer didn't work.
I can use Quicktime Pro cause I currently have Quicktime X on my computer (snow leopard) which doesn't have a Pro upgrade.
Any myDVDedit is really confusing to use do I have to export the DVD into a VIDEO_TS file to fix it? I'm still puzzled

  • How do you add background music to a DVD chapter menu in iDVD?

I just need to add background music to a DVD menu-the main menu
    thanks

Just to cover the bases, did you check the audio slider bar to the lower right of the iDVD menu screen to make sure that the sound is turned up, or check the menu slider bar for audio in the Menu pane?
Is your song in aiff format?
Sometimespermissions and preferences can get corrupted. Whenever iDVD starts acting funny, a common maintenance procedure is to do the following: Delete preferences by closing iDVD and trashing the file com.apple.iDVD.plist found in User (the House icon)/Library/Preferences. Then do a permissions repair usingthe Utilities/Disk Utility App on your Mac. Open the Disk Utilities window and select the Mac hard drive icon at the top of the side pane at the left. Then click on the Repair Permissions button. When you have repaired permissions and deleted preferences, restart your computer and launch iDVD. iDVD will replace the .plist file that you deleted. Be sure also that you have sufficient free disk space on your hard drive for iDVD to function correctly. 25GB often is recommended by users of this forum. After doing all of the above, relaunch iDVD and see whether you still have the problem.

  • Deleted photo and thumbnail still shows up in album view and camera roll

Hi, whenever i delete a photo on either my ipad(2) or iphone(4s), the thumbnail of the deleted photo still shows up in the album view and camera roll.
Also, a picture that i deleted months ago (have saved other photos since then, and replaced the thumbnail) from my ipad randomly showed up in the album view and camera roll??
I have IOS 5.0.1 installed on both iphone(4s) and ipad(2).
Is this a software glitch or??
    thanks

Sounds like a damaged database fie:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • Chapter markers to idvd NOT WORKING

    I created chapter markers...
    I sent movie to iDVD...
There is no sub-menu with the chapters.
I checked preferences and I have it all set up correctly (I assume).
Any ideas? I really need to get this done for my son's class.
    Thanks.

According to this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/9.0/en/mov3ac6b3ff.html  I should be able to export to iDVD and the chapter markers should be there...
If you’ve added chapter markers to your project, you can simply burn the project to a DVD or export it, and the chapter markers will be recognized by iDVD, iTunes, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Front Row, QuickTime Player, DVD Player, and most standard DVD players.
Click to select the project in the Project Library, or open the project, and then do one of the tasks listed below. The Share menu appears in a light gray bar across the top of your computer screen.
To share your movie with iDVD, choose Share > iDVD, and then burn it to a DVD.
To share your movie with iTunes, choose Share > iTunes.
To send your movie to the Media Browser, choose Share > Media Browser. When you send a project to the Media Browser, it will be available for use in iDVD the next time you open iDVD, which recognizes chapter markers.
To export your movie as a movie file, choose Share > Export Movie.Keep in mind that movies exported in the tiny format don’t include chapter markers.
To export your movie using advanced QuickTime options, choose Share > “Export using QuickTime.”

    This has been fixed...
Turns out I was adding COMMENTS and not CHAPTERS!

  • Export with chapter marker to iDVD

Ok something has slipped from my memory.
I'm trying to create a DVD of my recent project. I created 12 chapter markers with the first being 00:00:15:01 into it. I exported it to Quicktime movie (not conversion) I selected add Audio and Video and include Chapter Markers. I made it not self contained. But no chapters appeared in iDVD? I tried including All Markers and also tried including Studio Pro markers without success.
    Any suggestions?
    John

I've exported a sequence with chapter markers using Quicktime conversion and all the chapter markers show up except for the last one. Looking back at the original sequence in FCE, this last chapter marker is the only one that is a pink marker on the clip rather than a green marker on the timeline. I've tried several times to delete this chapter marker and re-create it. Each time, it reappears as a pink marker tied to the clip. Is there a way to force it into the timeline? The only difference between this chapter marker and the others is this one is located at the beginning of the credits at the end of a movie which were created using the Boris plug-in for a scrolling title. All the others appear correctly in the timeline were tied to normal video clips.
Would the fact that I'm creating a chapter marker in the part of the sequence created using the plug-in cause the marker to behave differently?

  • Slow iPhoto Thumbnails in iDVD

    Gang,
Here's the problem. The girlfriend has a large photo library in iPhoto (not extreme!) and running iDVD on her 12" laptop was unbearable slow in scrolling through photos to add to menus. Spinning beach ball between each screen for 10 seconds or more.
Recently she bought a Mac Pro... and the same thing happens!!! Maybe not 10 seconds, maybe we are down to 5 seconds. but it doesn't scroll at all - it just SLOWLY clicks down a page of thumbnails at a time.
I've followed all the suggestions in the Prevent DVD crashes thread. I have rebuilt the iPhoto library. I have not reinstalled iDVD.
I have no trouble on my G5 iMac and I would have more photos though probably not a large as hers.
I would assume that iDVD is not looking at the actual image in iPhoto and making it's own thumbnail, but pulling it from an existing thumbnail index somewhere.
Any ideas where to look to speed this thing up. Especially after she bought the Mac Pro...!!!!!
    Thanks
    Paul
