Chapters in DVD studio pro

I used markers in DVD studio pro to create my chapters. My problem is that I only need the chapters for the second "Chapters" menu and need the video to play through on the main menu, but right now there is a slight pause between each chapter as they advance. I thought about duplicating my main video track and having one with chapters and one without, but then my dvd gets too full. What should I do?
I would appreciate any advice!
Thanks,

Hi:

You can get the same feature creating a Story from the main Track. You select the track and click on Add Story button. Double click on the new Story and take from the Track Markers pane the cgapters you want your Story plays. You can create so many Stories from the track as play lists you need.
Visit this place and you'll find a tutorial for creating stories: www.dvdstepbystep.com
And you can read in the DVDSP manual about stories, you'll solve a lot of this kind of navigation issues this way.

  • Quick and Dirty "Chapters" with DVD Studio Pro?

Ok, so here is my workflow:
I have a project in FCP.  It's one large 60 minute file broken into segments from start/stop in my timeline.
    - I am going to export this to a quicktime reference file (uncompressed, 10bit)
    - Then use Compressor to turn the uncompressed movie file into MPG and AC3 video and audio format
    - Import the mpg and the ac3 into DVD Studio Pro as a track, set to play on dvd start
    - then burn the DVD
My question is, is there any quick way to lay down chapter markers where the segments are so that when I put the DVD into a regular DVD player I can just skip to the next clip with the DVD remote?  (My source is one large 60 minute file with about 30 start/stop points in FCP)
I just want to be able to scan the disc in the DVD player with the remote control without having to use the "search/speed" buttons to manually scan all the footage.
If this is a noob question, and I am missing something, please explain.
    - I DO know how to add chapter markers in Compressor (and FCP), but am not sure if that translates to DVD studio in the output file, and I'd really like to do it in FCP because the segment start/stop points are already in my timeline.
    Thanks!

1st, a QT reference movie is the same compression as the original files, not uncompressed.  Once you're workign with a compression scheme (HDV, DVCPRO-HD, NTSC-DV) going to uncompressed does absolutly nothing for you, it does not add quality, just gives you larger than nessisary file sizes.  If you export, use either a QT reference movie (there is no choice of compression scheme), or a ProRes QT.
If you want the best quality, go directly from the FCP Timeline to Compressor, don't export anything.
If your chapter markers in FCP are Chapter markers, go directly to Compressor, use one of the DVD preset folders, the chapter markers will translate into DVD SP.  You can than use DVD SP's automated chapter menu function to get things done fast, create Stories for more complex functioning, etc.
This is old, FCP/Compressor parts may be outdated now, but the DVD SP part is still valid.  Shows that functioning I'm talking about.

  • Creating DVD Chapters from within DVD studio Pro

    Hey,
Is this possible? Can we create DVD chapters from within DVD Studio Pro?
    Chris

Yes, you can add chapter markers in the DVDSP timeline, although they are not frame accurate as they are in FCP. You'll typically get them within about half a second as they can only sit on a 'GOP' boundary, and these occur roughly every 15 frames equivalent.
To add a marker you move the playhead to where you want it and type the 'm' key, pretty much as in FCP.
The chapter marker then defines the start of a chapter for playback. You can manipulate the navigation such that only one chapter plays before you go back to the menu, or you can start at a marker and continue onwards. You can even create lists of markers that are not in track order and have playback jump about between them, although it's not always wise to do so!

  • Getting Chapters from IDVD to DVD Studio Pro

I have a video that must be paused after chapter segments by user and have found that I need to use DVD studio pro which I purchased today with no knowledge of how it works. Post just today explains that.
I built an entire movie with transitions, audio and chapters iniDVD and Now I would like to get those chapter markers into DVD studio pro. Do i have to first export to Final Cut and then export to DVD Studio.
I have made a quicktime movie that when viewed in Quicktime shows all the chapters(31 in all).
Is there a better way to do this than manually find each time points and adding markers in dvd pro?
Secondly, once i get those markers in DVD studio, can i create a pause and next function as one whole movie or do they need to be separate items(term).
    Thansk for any guidance.

If you added Chapter Markers in Final Cut Pro, then you are all set. In FCP, Export a QuickTime Movie and when the dialog box opens make sure your Markers are set to "DVD Studio Pro Markers".
If you added Chapter Markers in iDVD, then you are out of luck. You have to do it all over again. You could add Chapter Markers in DVD SP, but I recommend doing it in FCP.

  • DVD STUDIO PRO - How to make chapters loop?

    Hi
I'm trying to create a DVD and my last problem I'd like to resolve before the final burn is:
Is there a way to make the Chapters in my Track Loop?
My scenario: I have 5 Chapters Total. In my Chpater Menu I created 5 Buttons so you can jump straight to 5 Chapters. But let's say for Button 3 (Chapter 3), when I activate/play it, if I hit SKIP FWD I can skip to Chapter 4, & 5, BUT if I hit SKIP BACK it stops at Chapter 3 (which is where I started - Button 3).
Is there a way for me to set it so that if I hit Button 3-Chapter 3 from the Chapter Menu - I can access Chapter 1&2 by hitting Skip Backwards while the track is playing? The only way I can think to resolve this is to add Chapter 1&2 after Chapter 5 in my Story List but that means I can only hit Skip Forward and it will eventually stop skipping forward once it hits Chapter 2. So is there a way to loop it???
Sorry I hope I explained it decent enough for you guys to understand
NEED HELP ASAP!!! Trying to finish for a client this weekend! :

Yeahhh so it took me giving up and just burning to DVD and playing it in an actual DVD player to realize that the DVD Studio Pro does its "behind-the-scenes" magic and will have that function automatically figured out for the DVD Player. DO NOT rely on the simulation feature...geez...problem solved.

  • Does DVD Studio Pro max out at 100 chapters?

I have been told that 100 chapters is the most you can have in a DVD Studio Pro project. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks in advance for your input and your time.

If I'm adding a slideshow to my project and have 180 photos I assume I need to create 2 slideshows? Each photo is a chapter when you convert it to a track.
I'm new to DVD Studio Pro and none of my menu photos or slideshow photos appear in the Viewer. Why can't I see the photos? They appear in the Menu, Assets and Slideshow column but don't appear in the Viewer or Simulator. I'm obviously missing s step somewhere. I only do slideshows because I'm a still photographer. I'm moving from iMovieHD and iDVD to DVD Studio Pro 3. My photos are 300dpi and 3000x2400 which is not 4:3 ratio. I need to recrop for DVD.
Any suggestions (read the manual)? I did buy DVD Studio Pro - 101: Mastering DVD Studio Pro but it doesn't help with trouble shooting or setup. I apprecaite any help. -Roger

  • Export markers from Final Cut Pro X to DVD Studio Pro

    Hello,
After finding out how to create chapters via markers in Final Cut Pro we wonder how to export these markers to DVD Studio Pro without having to create ourselves a .txt file and writing the names and the times of the markers in it to export it to DVD Studio Pro. Isn't there a way to make this happen automatically?
Unfortunately the new version of Final Cut Pro doesn't have an export to Quick Time Player and this is why this kind of solution falls out and we really need to create the markers first in Final Cut Pro and not directly in DVD Studio.
    Is there a solution?
    Thank you.

At present, you cannot add chapter markers in FCP X.
If you send the project to Compressor, you can add chapter markers there, or you can add them in DVD SP.
You can add the chapter markers in Compressor or DVD SP manually, or if you create a text file listing the exact timecode positions (from FCP X storyline) where you want the chapter markers to be (each on a new line) Compressor (or DVD SP) will automatically insert the markers when you point it to the text file.

  • Marking DVD Studio Pro Markers In FCP 5

im using final cut pro 5& dvd studio pro 3 and i am trying to add markers that DVD studio pro will recognize and will make chapters from the markers in my sequence. what kind of marker do i use, a standard chapter marker? i tried exporting it by going to
    file>export>quicktime movie...
and from there i chose all markers from the marker area and when i opened it in dvd studio pro 3 no chapter markers were there. what am i doing wrong?

when i opened it in dvd studio pro 3 no chapter markers were there.
Please clarify exactly what you're doing when you say the above ('open it in DVDSP 3').
This might be a "Duh!" question, but are you placing your FCP movie into a Track (in DVD Studio Pro)?
In case it's not obvious, you will not be able to access or view markers in a QT movie (or M2V file) unless your movie is place in a Track.
(Forgive the simplification of the DVD spec, but Markers, though embedded in movie files, are navigational tools for Tracks.)

  • M2v files from compressor will not play in QT or DVD Studio Pro

I have 2 hours of HD footage that I am trying to put on a DVD. I tried exporting the entire thing (twice) to an mpeg2 but the resulting file would not open and froze quicktime. I then tried exporting the chapters individually. Even though I tried this twice, only the first clip worked. I then copied each chapter into a new sequence in FCP and exported each sequence to Compressor. This time, I could only open one of the 15 or so files in QT, but I could not even import that into DVD Studio Pro (it said it was an invalid file type). I have been using all the same settings, so I am not sure why chapter 1 works fine everywhere, chapter 2 works in QT but not DVD Studio Pro and the remaining chapters do not work anywhere. Anyone got any ideas as to what to do/try next?

I know that it will take a while, but after two tries exporting the whole thing and the result not working, I broke it up into smaller, 10 minute sections hoping that the computer would be able to handle them better and if one is bad, it is easier to fix than re-doing the entire thing.
The Compressor settings I am using: DVD Best Quality 150 minutes with all the default settings except that I put stream usage at HD DVD. I have also tried using Fastest Encode 150 minutes, also changing the stream usage.
I exported 20 minutes with Fastest Encode and changed the file format to 'H.264 for DVD Studio Pro' and it worked, but it is a mov file that is much bigger than the mpeg2 (m2v) file.
I started the compressor to work on the remaining hour at night and then left it until the next afternoon, but when I came back, it said there were 60+ hours remaining, but FCP was counting off the frames. I left it for another couple hours, hoping that compressor was simply estimating wrong, but when I came back, it said there were 93 hours remaining until it would be done. I canceled it and restarted the computer.

  • How can I import .mov file into dvd studio pro?

    Hi,
I have a .mov file and want to but a dvd with menu and chapters. But when I try to import the .mov file into dvd studio pro it says Incompatible format. How can I import my .mov file in to dvd studio pro?

    Two ways…
Transcode into a codec like Pro Res, import into DVDSP and let it do the encoding.
    Or better yet:
Import into Compressor, choose a DVD preset and let Compressor encode. It will make two files, separate video and audio files. Import those into DVDSP.
    Good luck.

  • Help.. First Time Using DVD Studio Pro!!

OK .. this is my first time using DVD Studio Pro. Before this I have always used IDVD for my Final Cut Projects, but I now need to branch out!
I've hit a bit of a brick wall. I've watched the video tutorials and tried to read the instruction manual, but it's heavy going!!!.. can someone help me get over the hump?
    Here's where I've got to:
    - In my Assets tab I have my two file - Test.mov QT Video File and Test.mov QT Audio file. Both are yellow uncompressed video. I also have a templates folder.
    - I chose the template called brush cover which I can see under the menu tab on a window. If I go to that same window and select the graphical tab I can see a menu 1 and track 1.
    - In my timeline I have dragged my Video and adui assets over and can see them and actually play the movie.
    - What is also worth mentioning is that I can also see the 18 chapter markers that I created in FCP.
    - Now I hit the brick wall!!.
    - Back in my menu I see 8 buttons. In my timeline I have 18 chapters. How do I transfer my 18 chapters over to my menu so that I have 18 buttons each one representing a chapter?
    - I'm sure that it's obvious and a silly question.. but for a rookie like me who's trying to figure this out from scratch it's not easy!
Thanks for any advise!!.. also if anyone has a good 'idiot's guide' for ex iDVD people moving to DVD Pro then I'd really appreciate it!
    Many Thanks!
    Steve.

You can duplicate your 8 buttons menu so many time as you need to include your 18 chapters, creating a simple new button to navigate through Chapter Menu1, Chapter Menu2, etc.
Or you can duplicte&resize buttons to fit more of them in a single menu, but 18 button chapters could be too much for a comfortable navigation.

You can use the Search feature in this forum and almost for sure you'll find any answer you need, in particular for basic stuff.
You can visit Drew13's site [DVD Step by Step|http://www.dvdstepbystep.com] for some good tutorials, and Drew13 uses to stay tuned here to help you too!
And sometimes Google helps too !

  • Dual audio tracks in dvd studio pro

Is there a way to play two audio tracks at the same time? I have a documentary setup with chapters and would like to add low level music under the commentary to mask room noise. I am hoping not to have to do in my editing program and just add it in DVD studio pro!

DVD SP is an authoring program, not an editing/compositing arena.
You need to go back to your NLE or an audio program to do this.

  • DVD Studio pro 4 no longer builds a DVD that will play in any player, is there an update or comparable program?

DVD Studio pro 4 no longer builds a DVD that will play in any player, is there an update or a comparable software available? Or are there some internal fixes that I have not found.  Preferences that will allow a clean product to be delivered?

Thank you for your prompt reply.  I first import all my assets, build my DVD, which may include one or more menus, pictures, music, etc. I use the simulator to test all aspects of video before burning.  Making sure that the end jump works, if I add chapters, going to each chapter making sure buttons and end jumps for the chapters work.  When I am satisfied I then go to burn/format function and delete or reuse any folders that the computer advises.  The resolution is SD, display mode 16.9, Lossless linking, red laser, single, one side 12 cm.  Thats about it.  Haven't had a problem in the past just wondering what I could be doing wrong now. I am workingo on an imac, MAC OS X, 10.7.4, 2.93 GHz, Intel Core 17, Memory 8GB, 133mHz,DDR3.
Response I get is, unknown disc, please check disc again."

  • DVD Studio Pro Document won't open.

I have been working on a DVD menu in DVD Studio Pro. Every time I quit the project and open it up again it gives me the message that the document could not be opened. I have version 4.1.2. I have Snow Leopard 10.6.6. I have tried using DiskWarrior and reinstalling DVD Studio Pro. I have tried deleting the preferences but for some reasons when I go to harddrive then to Library, then to preferences there is no DVD studio pro preferences. The menu is pretty complex is includes Play, Producer's notes, Chapters, and Crew. Crew has 9 different menus. If there is anybody that knows how to fix this problem please reply. I don't want to do just do it all in one sitting which takes 3 hours. Thank you.

    Funny name.
Is this your first DVDSP production?
Reinstalling Apple software almost never solves anything.
DiskWarrior only rebuilds a drive's directories and will not help in this situation, waste of time.
ore valuable, if DW doesn't do it for you is to repair permissions on the system drive.
Your prefs may be in another library, look in your user library and search for .plist using Spotlight set to include invisible files,.
    Welcome to the family.
Does the file have a DVDSP icon on it? The proper extension? What happens if you right click on it and select DVDSP form the list of apps?
Try using Google to search for the error message, sometimes that turns up remarkably rich documentation from other users or from Apple's knowledge base articles.
Give us a few days, someone may drop in but traffic can be light on DVDSP forum.
