Chapters in movies

Is there any way to Sort a movie that I have not downloaded from itunes into chapters? I have the new 1.1.3 update and want to use this feature with all of my movies

I have tried following those instructions and when I try and after I have finished setting the times for my chapters I can't get Quicktime to open the text file. It keeps saying that "The movie contains an incorrect duration". I am running OSX 10.5.2 and QT 7.4.1
Any idea what I might be doing wrong. I was successful doing it the other night with a shorter version of the video. The current version is just over 3 hours. I am not sure if that is the problem or not.

  • How to add chapters to exported Apple TV movies

(The process works with QuickTime 7.4 and Final Cut Express 4.0)
To add chapters to movies exported from FCE using the "Apple TV" preset in the Export menu:
In a text editor, like TextEdit in the Applications folder, type your list of chapters.
Make each item very short (preferably one word but no more than two or three words) and separate each item with a carriage return.
    Choose Format/Make Plain Text.
Save the document as plain text.
In QuickTime Player, choose File > Open File, select the text file, and click Open.
Choose File > Export. In the Export pop-up menu, choose "Text to Text." In the Use pop-up menu, choose "Text with Descriptors."
Click Options. In the Text Export Settings dialog, select "Show Text, Descriptors, and Time"; select "Show time relative to start of Movie"; and set fractions of seconds to 1/30.
(The fractions really don't matter, we will change the value later)
Click OK, then click Save to create a text file with descriptors.
Open the exported list in your text editor, and open the target movie (formatted for Apple TV) in QuickTime Player.
Choose Window > Show Movie Inspector.
In QuickTime Player, drag the playhead on the timeline to find the first point in the movie where you want to begin a new chapter.
Use the Right and Left Arrow keys to step forward or backward a frame at a time as needed. Note the current time in the Inspector window.
In the text file, find the timeScale attribute and change to 24.46.
Next, find the first chapter title and change the timestamp just before that chapter title to the time you noted in the Inspector window.
Example: For a chapter called "one" that starts at 4 seconds, 21 frames into the movie, you would revise the text to look like this:
    (00:00:04.21)
    *{textBox: 0, 0, 50, 160}one*
    Ignore the textBox attribute.
Repeat steps until you've identified all the places in the movie that correspond to the chapter divisions and you've entered the proper timestamps in the text file.
Change the last timestamp (the one after the last chapter title in the text file) to match the duration of the movie.
    Save the text file.
Open the text file in QuickTime Player.
Choose Edit > Select All, choose Edit > Copy.
Click in the target movie, make sure the playhead is at the beginning, choose Edit > "Add to Movie"
QuickTime adds the text track to the movie.
Choose Window > Show Movie Properties.
In the Properties window, select the video or audio track you want to associate with the chapter track, and click Other Settings.
Normally you would choose the main video track.
(alternatively, choose audio track from the Chapters pop-up menu. If you have a movie with alternate subtitle or sound tracks, you can create multiple chapter lists in different languages and set the appropriate subtitle or sound track as the owner of each chapter list. The chapter list will change to match the selected language.)
    Select the text track.
Deselect the check box for the text track so that it doesn't display on top of the video.
The new track will still function as a chapter track.
Save the movie as a self-contained movie.
In the Finder, drag the movie to iTunes, and then Sync to Apple TV. The movie will play in Apple TV with Chapters!
-- This is modified from a QT7.2 tutorial, thanks to Tom Wolsky for pointing me in the right direction --

Thanks for explaining that in detail Mike.

  • Adding chapters to iPad movies?

This is a question which I have no idea where to post.  So I'll start here, and youse guys can tell me where it might be more effective.
Since the demise of the DVD (c'mon, ya can't play 'em in an iPad, so they're dead...), what has replaced it in the iPad world?  What I mean is this: I'd like to be able to author a presentation, similar to a DVD, which would present a menu and chapter choices to my viewer.
DVD was such a nice tight spec, and doing simple menu stuff is second nature to me now...so what's replacing it in the post-disc world?
    Any help would be appreciated...

Yes, that's how it works in theory.
In practice, I'm having the iPad see the chapters.  Movie plays fine in QT7 Pro, QTX and iTunes (on the iMac that the iPad syncs to), but when transferred to the iPad whilst syncing, the chapter info is lost.  Another helper suggested I upload the movie back from the iPad and see if the chapter info is there (ie, not being recognized on the iPad, but existing); or if the chapter info gets deleted during syncing.
More to come...as soon as the wife let's me have the iPad for a bit!

  • How do I move text from one chapter to another

I imported a book I had written in pages.  I want to divide it into chapters but at present it is all in chapter 1.
How can i make four or five new chapters but move the content from chapter one.
    Thank you,

    From a previous thread:
Touch and hold any icon for a couple of seconds. They'll all start to wobble. Touch and drag the one you want to move to the side of the screen and the next screen will appear; drop the icon on whatever screen you want it on.
You can also do it quicker in iTunes - connect the phone and click the Apps tab in the main window. You'll see a picture of your phone with the apps laid out. Just click and drag

  • How to merge .m4v files with chapters included?

I am unable to merge two .m4v files in quicktime pro and keep their chapter structure. Is this even possible? I take a lot of time to build chapters into movies I make and I would like to be able to combine some AND keep the chapter structure.
    Here is what I have:
    Movie A: 12 chapters
    Movie B: 10 chapters
open movie A in quicktime pro
open movie B in quicktime pro
    copy movie B (command+A, command+C)
    select movie A
push needs to end of movie A
    paste clipboard (command+V)
    Result:
Movie A now has it's original 12 chapters and then the added movie B is just one long section added on to the end of Movie A's last chapter.
Any help would be appreciated. This seems to be an ongoing question on many forums.

    1) is there any way to use your method that give me a final .m4v?
Well, your questions are certainly getting harder. How a bout no, yes, and maybe.
    a) No, I do not know of a direct approach for simply changing the file container. As you may have noted, QT now checks the Video Track "Sample Description" and if the extension does not match the description, QT sends you a "nastygram" modal message and refuses to open the file.
    b) Yes, it can be done indirectly. In this case I used the SimpleMovieX ($35) from Aero Quartet of Catalonia, Spain. While I tend to use QT Pro and MPEG Streamclip for most day-to-day work, this application does have some unique features to which I resort when needed. One is the "Keyframe" combined indicator/skip option, one is its audio manipulations, and another is the way it handles H.264/AAC MOV file container conversion. (I also do a lot of "track management" work that leaves me in an MOV file when I actually want MP4 or M4V file container features like being able to associate external "artwork" images in iTunes.) In any event, this application does actually go through and correct the descriptors before it copies the appropriate data to the new container making QT ever so happy with the new MP4 container. At this point, if I modify the MP4 Extension to M4V in the Finder, QT then does not issue the modal message and does use iTunes as the default application to open the file.
    c) Maybe the file is considered to be a real M4V file and maybe it is not. I have not, for instance tried to add a "Passthrough" AC3 secondary audio track and check to see if the resulting file will play correctly via TV. So there may yet be some internal distinctions of which I am yet unaware. Other than that, the file does indeed seem to function as any other iTunes file created by direct M4V data compressed export.
Anyway, this is from the "for whatever it is worth" department and you can invest $35 in the application or try to find another application capable of doing the same thing. MPEG Streamclip, for instance, will not work here but I have not actually looked around for anything else.
    2) if I use the final .MOV that you get at the end of your tutorial, will exporting as "apple tv" or mpeg 4 etc. compress it again?
Yes, it will. In addition, depending on the application used to perform the export, you may lose the chapter track also.

  • Is it possible to have subchapters to chapters in iDVD

It is possible to have multiple movies in iDVD each with chapters.
Is there also a way to have subchapters to chapters so that the entire movie would play without stopping at the end of each chapter?

    Hi James
Isn't this just a design question.
Make the sub-sub chapters and move their titles so that they look like

  • Compress from imovie to quicktime, saving chapters

    Hello,
I am creating movies in imovie and compressing them into quicktime movies. I have created chapters in imovie and want to preserve the chapters in the quicktime movie. What compression settings should I use for this?

I can't find a chaptered reference movie from the movies I have created. Not sure if this means you found the proper folder and it was empty or if it means you didn't know how to open the project package files. Not knowing your level of experience, will assume the latter for the moment.
    1) Locate your iMovie project file
    2) Control-mouse click on the icon
    3) Mouse click the "Show Package Contents" option in the windw that opens
    4) Double-click the "Shared Movies" folder to open it
    5) Double-click the "iDVD" folder to open it
    6) Double-click the reference MOV file that represents your current iMovie timeline to open it in the QT Player
If your iMovie timeline contains a chaptered movie/clip segment, the the QT Player should be displaying it with the chapter feature at this time. (Try selecting chapters at random in the chapter pop-up list to ensure the feature is working correctly.)
Is there a way to save the movie from imovie to quicktime with the chapters that is not so huge?If by this you are asking if it is possible to convert the movie to a new format with a much smaller file size (and/or display dimensions) and retain the chapter track, then the answer is no (as far as I know). However, you can extract the chapter data from the reference file described above and apply it to such a converted file.
I also can't find a way to save a text file from imovie. Could you explain a bit more?I personnally would recommend use of a third-party utility to do this -- Metadata Hootenanny 1.1.4 (free) -- if you are using a PPC G5 here. The following would be a typical workflow when using this utility:
    1) Export your chaptered movie from iMovie to your desired format (e.g., "Movie to iPod") in the normal manner
    2) Open Metadata Hootenanny and drop the iMovie reference file onto the "Library/Playlist" work area
    3) Press the "Open Book" icon to switch to the "Chapters" area to view chaptering data
    4) Press the "Save to Text File..." button the save the chapter data
    5) Press the "List" icon to return to the "Library/Playlist" area
    6) Delete/Clear the reference file from the list
    7) Drop your converted target file to the "Library/Playlist" area
    8) Press the "Open Book" icon to switch to the "Chapters" area again
    9) Ensure "Scale Chapters from Files" and "Allow Editing Chapter Times" options are set
    10) Press the "Open File" button and load the chaper text file saved above
    11) Test capter markers using he integrated media player and adjust frames/chapters if required
    12) Return to the "Library/Playlist" area, sace the chaptered file, clear the list, and quit
    13) Open the Movie in the QT Player, test chapters, set presentation options if desired, add graphic and set as poster frame if desired, deselect any active selected area if desired, reset play head to beginning of movie if needed, and use "Save As..." to rename final movie/reset "fast start" option as desired if destined for web use.
Am currrently busy working on a project so I can't prepare a better example of this work flow, but here is a LINK to an older sample file made in this manner.

  • Itunes movie purchases

i have a question about movies purchased in itunes. is there a limit to the number of devices those movies can be loaded on? i had heard rumor that movies can only be loaded onto 5 devices at a time. i have more than 5 ios devices and would like to be able to have some of those movies on all my devices. also, do those movies purchased in itunes have chapters and movie info included with them?

You only get one download of a movie.  You would have to sync it to other devices.

  • How to use chapters

    Hi
Ok I've added markers to my sequence in FCE 4 and added titles. I then proceeded and Exported the sequence as a QuickTime movie. Now I've selected an appropriate theme in idvd and imported the QuickTime movie. The sequence popped up on the themed page but I want to create a separate menu where the viewer can select the different chapters i added in FCE 4. Also if I preview the video and skip forwards it just skips completely to the end of my film (back to the menu screen). Shouldn't it skip forwards to the next chapter? How do I do this please?
    Thanks
    Kevin

iDVD will show the chapters on submenus. It calls them 'Scenes.' Don't make a marker for the beginning of your movie; iDVD automatically creates a scene and calls it 'Beginning.'
When the DVD disk is played and a viewer selects one of the chapters, the movie will begin playing at that scene and play continuously to the end of the movie, just as commercial DVDs do.
One caveat: if you put your movie into an iDVD project, but then go back to your movie, whether iMovie or Final Cut, and make any changes at all, iDVD will not create the chapters properly and you will end up with all your chapter selections defaulting to one of the chapters. This is a known bug in iDVD, and there is no 'fix' for it. You must create a new iDVD project. Even if iDVD gives you the message that it recognizes your 'assets have changed' and asks if you want to update and you opt to have it do so, iDVD does NOT incorporate the new edits correctly.

  • Chapters? Where are the chapters?

Can't you add chapters before export to idvd?

Can't you add chapters before export to idvd?
Of course you can. Actually, there are several different ways to do so.
    1) From within an editor - Apparently the most common/only known method employed by the majority of users. In this case, the chapter module is built into editors like iMovie '06 (and earlier), FCE, FCP, etc. While this may be handy for anyone who edits their content before chaptering and converting their files to a final form for distribution it can be inconvenient for those who only want to chapter their content without need for editing or re-compression.
E.g., I make 4 or 5 DVDs for the family a year but turn out 400-500 TV shows, movies, podcasts, slideshows, etc. a year which never need to see the light of an editor for iPhone, iPod, TV, and online viewing. So for me, having an external application for chaptering is ideal.
    2) Manual Chaptering - the second and probably oldest method, is to simply use a "plain text" editor to manually create a "Text" track containing the chapter times/chapter names and merge it with your edited or unedited content in an MOV file container. Apple provides the step-by-step instructions for accomplishing this on their web site. However, since the process of locating and entering chapter points can be somewhat tedious and many of us are somewhat lazy, this approach usually has little or no appeal.
    3) External Graphic Chaptering - This would probably be the normal/preferred workflow for individuals using iMovie '08 and those individuals having no need to edit their content before chaptering. In this case, the edited or unedited content is simply dropped to GarageBand's "movie timeline" and chaptered as most users have always done in the various Apple editing applications -- i.e., you movie the playhead to the point where you wish to add a chapter and simply press a button. When done, the chaptered content can be "sent" to iDVD just as it used to be in previous versions of iMovie without re-compression, exported to your hard drive in an MOV file container without re-compression, or converted/re-compressed to MP4/M4V file containers with the chapter track in tact for use with external "artwork" in iTunes as many users requested. Frankly, I don't see why people are complaining since this single solution is compatible with the original iMovie-to-iDVD workflow, allows the chaptering movies without editing, and now allows the chaptering of MP4/H.264 files -- all of which are features requested time and again by various QT users.
4 External "Capturing" of Chapters - Another, lesser known, workflow employs the use of an external utility like Metadatahootenanny which, like GarageBand, can graphically chapter files but which allows the user to also extract/use "chapter" information directly from a DVD or VIDEO_TS folder, online source, or text file. While this utility is sometimes a bit "quirky," it does work... most of the time. And, while chapters may shift a few frames due to conversion of compression formats. it is still much faster than chaptering a movie manually or graphically "from scratch."
So basically there you have it. The workflows are there if you choose to use them rather than simply lament the fact that it cannot be done from "within" iMovie '08 or complain rather than using iMovie '06 which is included as an alternative to '08 for those who really prefer the older, more familiar workflow.

  • ITunes 7.6.2 and QT 7.4.5 - network sharing still not working

    Hi,
I want to share on my local network my iTunes library which is on a Leopard 10.5.2/Intel computer. The other computer is a G5 running Tiger 10.4.11
It does not work, I'm getting the -3259 error (the shared computer blocks port 3689).
In Leopard I can't just open up a specific port like in Tiger's sharing pref pane. My firewall
settings are "Allow only essential services" with Itunes added as an app that is also allowed.
The other way - from Tiger to Leopard - it works fine, because I can open 3689 for iTunes sharing.
Any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks, Michal

Not sure about opening ports but I have no firewall and I was hoping the new itunes 7.6.2 and QT 7.4.5 would finally fix the streaming video problem. Why is it Front Row works fine for streaming video but itunes still slowly loads the tv show 640/480 size for ipod and it just get's hung and does not play. My work around this is to access my tv show folder and mount it on the remote computer then open the shows in quicktime and it plays almost immediately and you can jump chapters or move to different locations easily within the video that is streaming. Itunes even when it worked did not do that well and if you wanted to get to another part of the video or skip a commercial it was always slow and glitchy. Does not Compute! This started happening with the last two or three updates for itunes. Do Appletv's have this issue with streaming I wonder. Must look at the discussions for that, my guess is no because it is using front row. Cmon Apple this has been a problem for a long time. I think they want everyone to buy an Apple tv and not use their macs hooked up to a tv. My duel 1.8 g5 powermac is hooked up via dvi to my Sony HD tv and thanks to my Radeon 800xt video card and ATI diplays conrtol panel it is perfectly scaled to 1080i resolution with no over scanning. All the menus and dock are where they are supposed to be just as if you were hooked up to a computer monitor. And it does way more than an Apple TV. I am upset that Apple is only offering the HD movies for the apple tv and not for your mac. "Imagine" a new mac mini with blueray and or dvd drive, a real video card, and dvi or hdmi plus hd downloadable movies. That to me would be the dream mac for TV. You could surf anything on the web, play games, do anything you do on your mac now on your tv.
I know I am not supposed to suggest or speculate so I will stop.... but cmon apple and fix this itunes streaming bug that has been around for about eight months or so. I love apple and just bought a new Mac Pro 2.8 8 core arrives tomorrow. If I wanted to hook that up to the tv I will be stuck with the overscan/underscan issue because the new nNvidia Geforce 8800 does not have the drivers or control panel to scale the res to fit the tv. ATI has not upgraded the control panel for intel computers and there is no download available unless you get the latest version that is universal but was written for the duel core g5's.
One last thing. Is there anyone out there that does not have streaming problems with itunes sharing over a wireless network playing 640 /480 h264 videos made for ipod. I have the airport extreme G and two airport expresses G. I do stream audio with no issues via itunes out to my airpost expresses.

  • IDVD & DVD projects different

    Hey Gang,
I created an iDVD project that consisted of a main menu, chapters, several movies and a slide show. There are actually 7 movie icons that are displayed on the chapter menu that link directly to each movie clip. When I review this on the computer, it works great. All movies are properly linked and the slide show links fine. The problem is when I burn the same project to the DVD. I play it in my DVD player and everything looks great, the slide show works fine but 4 of the 7 movie links, link to the same one movie, and not to the clip they are suppose to. I have burned 2 DVD-R disks to confirm what I was seeing. Any idea why my projects links changed when burned to DVD?
    Thanks...
    D

A couple things you might try...
One, with your current setup, in the menus you will find a "delete encoded assets" choice. Use that to clear out any garbage in your project forcing everything to be re-encoded and see if that does anything for you.
Two, if that doesn't work, maybe adding movies to the chapter page is messing your up. What you might do instead is open a new iDVD project, pick your theme, then on the main menu drag and drop in your three movies. Now each movie should get its own chapter page separate from the other movies.
I am not home to try it myself, but if memory serves me correctly, dropping in the first one will create a Play and Scenes button. Dropping in additional ones will give you a folder for those and in that folder you will find the Play and Scenes buttons. I am not sure what happens if you grab all three at once and drag in (do you get three folders or a Play and Scene button for one of them and folders for the other?). Anyway, you are free to rename and cut and paste buttons anywhere in your project. So you can arrange things if you wish.
For example, you might simply create a folder for the first one and then cut and paste the Play and Scenes buttons into that folder so you main menu is simply three folders of your three movies. Going into each will give you the Play and Scenes option.
Alternatively, you can rename your first movie's Play and Scenes buttons to something like "Play Disneyland" and "Disney Scenes". Then go into the folder of movie #2, cut and paste those buttons to the main menu, rename them, delete the now empty folder and repeat for the third movie. You would then have a main menu that might have buttons like so...
    Play Disneyland
    ... Disneyland Scenes
    Play Soccer Game
    ... Soccer Game scenes
    Play secret video of roommate
    ... secret roommate scenes
Each scenes button would take you to the menu of just the scenes from that movie.
