Chapters no show when exported into iDVD

I am using FCE 3.5 and exporting a quicktime movie to iDVD version 6.04 But my chapter markers as set in FCE are not showing up in iDVD, can suggestions...thanx

In Timeline move your playhead to the second chapter marker point. The export will add one automatically about two seconds in, the name will be Beginning.
Hit the M key once (at point 2), a Green Chapter Marker appears in the Timeline at the playhead.
Hit the M key again, the Edit Marker dialogue appears.
Enter a name in the Name: field.
Next, click the large Add Chapter Marker button. <Chapter> appears in the Comments field, do not tinker with this.
Click OK and it's done.
Add as many as is required. I think the limit is 99 but that's more about the DVD limits than FCE.
The other thing I would do is not Select All Markers but use Chapter Markers instead.

  • IPhoto Slideshow Image Quality when export to IDVD

Aloha ... I have two issues that I am having problems with when I export to IDVD. My images look very fuzzy (originals are very high res and print quality images} when exported to iDVD and a DVD is made. Also in the show my vertical images look fine and fill the screen yet on iDVD they are made shorter/squatier and upper and lower parts of the original image are lost. The format is wide screen as is the show. I am using a LCD wide screen TV if that helps. Any ideas out there?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you cropping your photos to the 16:9 ratio before creating the widescreen slideshow in iPhoto and exporting them to iDVD for a widescreen project? Most digital camera images are in the 4:3 size ratio and don't convert well to the widescreen. Also check the aspect ratio that you're playing the dvd in as that can have an effect on how the slideshow looks.
Also remember that the images going to iDVD will be reduced to 640 x 480 (normal TV) and slightly larger for the widescreen version. So the pixel dimensions of the original image are not that relevant.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Why does my photo slideshow quality deteriorate when exported to iDVD?

I have a client whose photos look great in iPhoto & iMovie, but look all pixelated when exported to iDVD. I've tried making a slideshow directly with iDVD, but the photos still look worse than they did in the iPhoto slideshow.
The size of the photos is pretty large (as big as 5233 x 3546), which I'm guessing might be part of the problem, so I tried exporting them from iPhoto with a limitation of 720 x 540, but they still look bad. I expect a decrease in quality once I burn the DVD, but these look bad even in the DVD preview.
    Any ideas?

All DVD slideshows are defaulted to 640 x 480 pixels. That's the standard. As long as the photos are in the 4:3 dimension ratio you can leave them at their fullest size. You can try using the Pro Quailty encoding to get better quality images. IMO the best image quality is obtained by creating the slideshow in iDVD from still photos. You don't get the Ken Burns effect, but in my opinion it's a bit over used too many time.
If you are creating your slideshow in iMovie then try the following.
1 - when your slideshow is how you want it quit iMovie.
2 - open iDVD, create a slideshow and open the slideshow edit mode.
3 - drag the iMovie project file into the slideshow pane on the left. (NOTE: this lets iDVD scale the movie file to the TV safe area when played on CRT TV sets.)
This also lets iDVD do the encoding for the iMovie assets and avoids two compressions, one by iMovie when you export to iDVD and the iDVD encoding.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Terrible quality slideshows when exporting to iDVD

    Hi,
I created a FCE file of photos and audio that I applied motion, zooming, and other various effects to. The imported photos are PSD files. Some have a pixel dimension of 972 x 648 (1.5" x 1" and 648dpi) and other are 3888 x 2592 (4" x 6" and 648dpi). I know that the pixel dimensions are the one that video uses, not dpi, so I had converted some to the lower size. I don't see a difference between the higher and lower sized files though. I changed the pixel aspect ratio to D1/DV NTSC (0.9) as well.
When I set the keyframes for movement, I made sure I used even numbers for the vertical setting. None of the photos are scaled over 100%. They range from 50 - 90%.
When I export the file from FCE to bring into iDVD, I have exported it as a QuickTime movie (with and without the self-contained movie option).
The problem I am having is that the slideshow in iDVD looks AWFUL. The images are blurry & pixely, text from LiveType is pixely, it's shaky, and there are moire patterns. It looks like I took pictures with my cell phone and used them. I am viewing it at actual size, but it is still terrible.
I'm wondering if the extra information in the files are causing the problem. (I come from a print background, so deleting the dpi goes against my nature - LOL!). Should I go back and convert all of these photos to a smaller sized file? If I change the resolution to 72dpi, the pixel dimensions change and I will have to rescale/reposition ALL of my photos (over 360 of them) - right? Is the fact that the computer screen is showing the interlacing adding to the problem and it won't be as bad when it is on the tv? Is there a different way to export these to fix the slideshows?
I haven't burned them to a disk yet, this is just from the preview in iDVD. I have imported a video sequence from FCE, that looks fine.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Kristin

    Me again,
I'm still having a hard time fixing this. I've put so much time and effort into these "slideshows" and I am still having problems with interlacing on the photos I could cry. I hooked up a tv to the computer today to see what the video "really" looks like and I was able to fix the video problems with the de-interlacing filter. The photos are nice and crisp. However, since I've applied movement to them (ex: cropped photos move across the page vertically or horizontally) and they are filed with the horizontal lines. Moire patterns, too. The de-interlace filter and flicker filters don't seem to fix them.
I found one of your posts before about how to remove moire & flicker by adding a blur filter:
For interlace, you'll need to blur vertically to reduce adjacent scanlines flicker. The standard technique for this is to apply:
Video Filters > Blur > General Convolution:
    Cell 2 = 0.25
    Cell 5 = 0.5
    Cell 8 = 0.25
    all other cells = 0
Apply as the last filter in the chain. However, if you see moire due to the Wave or some other distortion filter, you might try adding another one at the beginning of the filter chain.
Where is the Blur > General Convolution? Was it removed from FCE 4.0.1? I've got another one-to-one session scheduled, but it's not for another week and I need to get this video done by thurs eve.
    Thanks for any input.

  • Slideshow audio gets out of sync when exported to iDvd

I made a large slideshow for a 40th anniversary party. It has 244 images & 7 songs. It is 29 min 54 seconds long. When I view the slideshow in iPhoto it works fine & the last image ends right at the end of the last song.
When I exported it to iDvd, the audio gets out of sync with the video. By the end of the first song, the video is about 2 seconds ahead. By the end of the last image, the last song is cut of by about 30 to 45 seconds. I tried exporting the slideshow directly to iDvd. I also exported it as a large movie & it did the same thing.
    I'm using a 17" 1.67ghz powerbook with 1.5 gigs of ram.
    I'm using OS 10.4.2.
    I'm using iPhoto 5.0.4
    I'm using iDvd 5.0.1
The images are scanned tiffs. I also have jpegs that I shot with my canon eos digital rebel xt.
Anybody have any ideas or work-arounds?

I suggest you either use iDVD to create two slideshows or use iMovie to get all 277 images and the 8 audio tracks into one slideshow. If you use iMovie after you get the slideshow/movie put together and completed quit iMovie. Then go into the iMovie project package (Control-click and select Show Package Contents). The find your movie in the Shared Movies folder and drag it into an open iDVD menu. This allows iDVD to to the rendering of the stills and give you a sharper image. That movie file you're dragging is a reference movie so leave it where it is and just drag it into iDVD's window.
If you can live with two separate slideshow (consider it a potty break between the two) and you don't have or need the Ken Burns effect, you can get excellent results by building the slideshows with iDVD from imported stills. The sync to audio in this method works as advertised. I like to add a blank slide at the end of the slideshow so the music fades out during a blank, black slide.

  • Sides of Keynote presentation cut off when exported to iDVD

    Hi,
I have a keynote presentation with the slides set to 800X600 that I am trying to burn to a DVD. I am able to burn fine but when it plays on my DVD player and CRT Samsung TV, the sides of the slides are cut off so that the first and last letters of many lines are not viewable. I also tried on a friend's TV with the same results The DVD looks fine when playing on my iMac but it's widescreen.
I first tried exporting the keynote presentation as a quicktime movie set to full quality 800X600. The next time I exported to iDVD which first exported to a quicktime movie with a size of 720X540. I thought that would fix it but that presentation also has the sides cut off. The iDVD project is using a standard 4:3 aspect ration. Should I try a widescreen project or won't that make more of the slide disappear. Any help would be much apprecitated.

Your problem is that while on a monitor, you can see the entire picture. Any DVD player connected to a standard television is going to show, at most, 90% of the image...some may only show 80%. This is due to something called Overscan on televisions. To account for this overscan, you have to make sure that as you're creating your presentation, you have nothing near the edges.
A good rule of thumb is to create an area that's 80% of the size of your presentation (in 4:3 resolutions, widescreen, you only have to worry about the right and left) and, as you're creating, keep dropping this shape onto your presentation slides to make sure you're inside it. Then, you'll be pretty sure that even on the worst televisions, all you information will show.

  • Iphoto slideshow Turned slides when exported to iDVD

Some photos are turned after export to iDVD, how can that be? More importantly how to fix, the slide show looks fine in iPhoto. The image quality is another issue and I'll follow the iMovie thread because I have 353 slides using 19GB in iPhoto. Why are photos being turned?
    G4 400 AGP graphics upgraded to 1GHZ & Radeon 8500   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   500 Gig FW 800 back up drive, ESATA 1.5 TB, DVR 109

    James:
They are being turned because for some reason iDVD is taking the Original version instead of the rotated version in the Modified folder. These are portrait photos from a camera with auto-rotate capability. I suggest you try exporting the rotated version to a folder on the desktop, drop then into an open Safari window to make sure they are truly rotated and then import them and replace the problem versions.
This can be circumvented by uploading to a folder on the desktop first, previewing the photos in Preview of some other application and then rotating them with a 3rd party application. I use PhotoToolCM which is a Contextual Menu application that will losslessly rotate the photos.
You might try rebuilding the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options. Next add some photos to iDVD and see if they are correct. You can also drag the thumbnails from iPhoto into the open iDVD slideshow window and try it that way.
    Do you Twango?
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Annoying problem exporting into iDVD

    Hi folks
Trying to export a little video I'm making into iDVD, all clips have volume at zero and there is a music track. Its just as I want it when I export it to iTunes or whatever else, but when I export it into iDVD there is one clip which plays its original audio. Most irritating. I've made sure that the volume is to zero on the rogue clip and tried exporting it several times but it keeps doing it.
Anyone got any idea what I can do?
    Thanks
Ps its iMovie v.8 and iDVD v.7

Are you using any fast or slow motion?

  • Completed QT movie changes format when imported into iDVD and DVD Studio

I made a few movies and I simply want them on a DVD. I convert them into QT movies and everything looks great. I filmed both movie using my Canon Vixia M30 in 60i and maximum quality. When I move the files into iDVD, it squishes the actual movie into 4:3 even though the original QT movie is 16:9 and iDVD is set up for 16:9 and the quality is horrible. I check the "Project Info" and my 3.1GB file has shrunk down to a 376MB file. I tried to put the file into DVD Studio and the same thing happened. This has happened with the last two movies I made. I'm really getting frustrated. What am I doing wrong? Help!!

A DVD uses the highly compressed MPEG2 codec. So it is impossible to have it look exactly the same.
Nothing you can do about that, the DVD video specification is strictly set out.
First of all, export from FCP. Self contained with Current Settings (same as the Timeline).
Bring that file into Compressor and apply one of the time based DVD presets that the running time of your video fits into -for example: *DVD 90 mins Best Quality 16:9*. Import the resulting MPEG2 and AC3 files into DVD Studio Pro. You must also tell DVD SP that your film is 16:9.

  • Tab does not show when dragged into it's own new window

This happened after I updated to Firefox 8.0.1. Same problem with 9.0.1. I'm on a Mac running OS X 10.5.8. I have not changed any add-ons, plugins, extensions, or anything like that.
Every time a tab is dragged from my main window to form it's own new window, the tab button on the new window does not appear. I only have a + sign showing.
A tab will show when I open a new tab, but the original "tab" does not appear. The + sign also appears on the left side of all new tabs. Isn't it supposed to be on the right?
If I have 2 "tabs" open but only have 1 tab showing and try to close the window, Firefox asks me if I'm sure I want to close the 2 tabs.
Tabs when opening blank new windows work properly. Dragging a tab to an already opened window works fine as well.
Most of the time a tab is dragged out on accident, and it is quite annoying because I can't drag it back into the main window.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks!

I found the cause but no solution, it's actually a plugin that does that: divx plus weblpayer (it gets installed when you install DivX on your system), if you disable it and restart firefox it all works again. But I want that plugin... so DivX need to fix this, unless it is a Firefox bug in its own core... anyway these two together creates the problem.
(I'm running Firefox 9.x on OSX Lion)
I also wish firefox tab tear out tab worked more like chrome's tab tear out, much friendlier...

  • Fade out doesn't show when exported as a jepg sequence?

I'm exporting my video as a jpeg sequence because I can't get rid of the artifacts when exported as a .mov file no matter how much I mess with the settings. The Jpeg sequence works great the only problem is the fadeouts in the video don't show. Anyone know how to change that?
Or how to get the video to export as a .mov file without artifacts some other way besides changing the quicktime settings.

It still doesn't show. It's within the symbol, using the color effect alpha and doesn't show when playing through the timeline- only when testing the movie/scene or exported as a swf or mov file.

  • Rogue Sound when exporting to iDVD - HELP!!!!!!

I wonder if anyone can help. i have spent 100's of hours putting together a 50 minute movie that combines lots of clips from the same source together with stills. I have used multiple transitions and I am using the photograph theme.
I have two problems. Firstly although the movie plays perfect sound throughout in imovie when I export it ti IDVD the movie sound deteriorates for the middle part of the movie only. Despite having set the sound to zero on the clip - as I am using background music the sound still plays. i can't get rid of it. i have tried deleting and re-adding the clips from the source event, detached the audio, you name it and yet I cannot get rid of the sound. Secondly and again only in this middle section I have rogue sound appearing at a particular point in the film from a clip which is earlier in the movie - almost as if the sound has become detached and moved. I have checked and checked but can't fix it. I even exported the soundtrack only to Imovie to see if that would work but it did not. I AM OPEN TO ANY IDEAS - HELP

Is it realistic to think Apple will fix the bug soon?
We're not supposed to speculate here - no-one but Apple would know anyway! Hopefully, the next version upgrade (? iMovie '10) might address it.
One option for you would be to use the free program JES Deinterlacer to do your speed changes. My understanding is that it does a better job of slow and fast motion than iMovie. You would need to import your clips into JES, process them, export from JES, then re-import to iMovie - all a bit messy! But you would get the desired result.
If you leave the clips in iMovie with their current speed settings, you will almost certainly experience the audio glitches on export. So, you either need to change the speed to the presets, or use a 3rd party product such as JES Deinterlacer to set the speed for you. Bear in mind I haven't tested this (with JES) but believe it should work.
The product can be downloaded from this site:
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html
A link to an 18 MB video (by David Lute) showing a comparison of JES Deinterlacer slow-motion vs. iMovie slow-motion can be found about one third the way down the page. Unfortunately, there is no mention of the iMovie version used for the test.

  • Moving Slide Show from iPhoto into iDVD does not capture music

I have created several slide shows in iPhoto. I recently photographed a wedding and created a slide show set to music from my iTunes playlist. When I sent the slideshow to iDVD it picked up the transitions, timing, etc., but did not pick up the music. I am at a loss, as I have tried to drag and drop the music and that won't work.

First double click where it say's slideshow (assuming you have already added your photos to iDvd). If you haven't then see the link and instructions below.
Now insert the audio cd, open it, and drag & drop the audio file directly to the slideshow audio well as in the above example.
    http://www.wonderhowto.com/software/apple-idvd-video/
    Adding sound to a slideshow
Adding a soundtrack to a slideshow can enhance the mood or tone of the slideshow, provide information, or tell a story. You can use a song or entire playlist from your iTunes library, music you composed in GarageBand, and even a voiceover you recorded in GarageBand or some other application. You can also use any audio files that QuickTime supports (including AIFF/AIFC, Audio CD, AAC, MP3, WAV, and MPEG-4).
If you add audio to your slideshow, you can’t set the slideshow to advance manually.
To add a soundtrack to a slideshow:
Double-click the button for your slideshow on the DVD menu to open the slideshow editor.
Click the Media button to open the Media pane, and then click Audio.
Click GarageBand to find songs in GarageBand, or iTunes to find music in your iTunes library.
Drag a playlist or a song from the Audio pane to the audio well (shown below) in the slideshow editor.
You can also drag audio files from another folder on your hard disk or from a connected server to the audio well. The audio well icon changes from a speaker to one that corresponds with the type of file you added.
The slide duration is automatically set to “Fit to Audio” to ensure that the slideshow and soundtrack finish at the same time. If you want to manually change how long each slide stays onscreen, choose the number of seconds from the Slide Duration pop-up menu.
When you do this, the slideshow and music may become out of sync, so it’s important to preview the slideshow to make sure you like it. Click the Preview button at the bottom of the iDVD window, which brings up the iDVD remote control. Click Exit in the remote control to return to the slideshow editor.
Click the Return button to exit the sideshow editor.
If the Slide Duration pop-up menu is set to “Fit to Audio,” and the music is too short for all the slides and transitions, iDVD sets the slide duration to the smallest duration above 1 second that allows it to play or repeat the song completely.
If you add a playlist to the audio well, the songs play in the slideshow in the same order they appear in the playlist. If you want to change the order of songs, do that in iTunes and then add the playlist to your DVD again.
If you add movies that have audio to your slideshow, you can hear this audio when a movie is playing in the slideshow. If your slideshow has a soundtrack, the soundtrack fades out while the movie is playing so that the movie audio can be heard. This is a default setting (”Duck audio while playing movies”) in the slideshow editor, controlled in the Settings dialog.
To delete the audio from a slideshow, simply drag the music icon out of the audio well. To replace the existing audio, drag a new song or playlist into the audio well.
