Character direction in CC indesign

Hi there, I cannot find how to access the character direction in CC indesign. As I am working with arabic characters. Thanks

No issues on your downloading. Probably a layout mishap. But the Gallery of drawing and type tools are on p20-21.

  • Adobe Indesign CS6(8.0) there is no Paragraph and Character directions

Hi, I have Adobe Indesign CS6(8.0) Windows 7. Where can I see the Paragraph and Character directions? I followed tutorials on the net but I can't find the paragraph and character directions. It's not like it's grayed, but the 2 options weren't there. Thanks!

We are using InDesign CS6 version 8.1.
When I refer to the "old" libraries I am referring to InDesign libraries that were created using InDesign CS2 back in 2006, and "new" libraries are libraries created using InDesign CS6 in 2014.
I just found out that the library assets in the "new" libraries were created by opening a document and dragging items from the Structure panel onto the Library panel.
This is why the script was having problems placing the asset on to a document and the root of the problem. This should not have been done.
I just created a new library and added a library asset by opening a document with pageitems on it and clicking on the New Library button on the Library Panel. I then ran my script and everything worked.
Sorry for the confusion. There seems to have been some misunderstanding within our team.
Nevertheless it was a great learning experience.  Thanks for your help.

  • Character Direction override in Word 2003 imports

I've searched for Character Direction and seen mainly mentions of ME and foreign language conversions right to left and left to right. We do not use ME or any foreign language features. The behavior I'm troubleshooting for InDesign CS5 7.0.3 importing Word 2003 docs on a Windows XP macine, is as follows:
I have hundreds of Word 2003 documents, used in a production environment where editors update text daily or weekly, the production dept. imports into newsletters in InDesign. We go from import to finished product at the printer sometimes as quickly as 15 minutes.
In CS4, all of these documents import into my publications without overrides, using Microsoft Word Import options set for Customize Style Import, and style mapping used to map Word paragraph styles to ID paragraph styles
After the CS5 conversion, every one of my Word 2003 documents for all of my publications come in with overrides showing hyphenation settings and character direction that did not appear with CS4. This is despite my mapping styles, and the fact that these options can't even be (as far as I can tell) a paragraph or character override inside Word.
I went back to CS4 to make sure there were no changes in the Word docs. They worked perfectly, no overrides.
Inside Word 2003, I had to go to Tools > Language > Hyphenation and make the hyphenation setting in the Word doc match exactly the hyphenation settings for the paragraph style it was being mapped to in InDesign to make it go away at import.
Now I am left only with the character direction Left To Right override, which I can't figure out how to fix.
I can't find a way to set this in Word, and I can't find a way (since I don't have ME) to change it in InDesign. It is not practical for me to run a script for every import or continue to reset the overrides manually, because we simply don't have to the time, our deadlines are too tight and frequent. Plus, if we miss one, there are definite consequences, because the data is exported in a variety of formats for reuse automatically via scripts, and the override is messing up my exports.
I was hoping I'd see a post that says, "Ah yes, the Word filters in CS5 were updated, and now we look for hyphenation and character direction, and here's what you can do as a workaround" but I'm not seeing anything. If I can't define left to right in the regular version of ID or in Word 2003, does anyone have an idea how I can get my import to ignore it again?

I hate it when I know too much about MS Word.
I don't have Word accessible right now, but you can set character direction in (the Windows version of) Word. I don't remember the exact details off-hand. Character direction is not the only overrides I've seen make its way in. I've seen some CJK features get imported as overrides as well (by users not using CJK languages).
It actually depends on your OS and your version of Word, I think. In Word 2007 on Windows 7, you need to have a RTL keyboard installed in order to expose the right-to-left-paragraph and left-to-right-paragraph buttons on the ribbon. I think that Asian scripts are on in all installs of Word 2007, but since our OS has some Asian keyobards turned on by default by Group Policy, I'm unsure of this. In Word 2003 on Windows XP, you need the, oh heck I can't visualise the menu, something like "Enable complex script support for right-to-left languages" in the Region and Language tab in Control Panel.
For all recent versions of Word, you can check the Fonts window (control-D) to see if you have one, two, or three scripts enabled.
    Font = Latin-script
    Asian text font = CJK
    Complex scripts = Thai/Lao/etc. and Arabic/Farsi/etc.
Finally: It's possible to have a RTL paragraph in a Word document on the machine of someone who does not have the Complex Scripts dropdown in the Font menu in Word. Likewise, it's possible to have paragraph styles in Word with CJK information on a machine that does not have CJK support turned on in Word (I have seen this numerous times in the Win XP/Office 2003 era).
So, in terms of the original post - I haven't yet figured out if this is a new feature of CS5, or something about one's install of Word or Windows, but there are so many variables that the only obvious solution to me is "a workflow in which overrides are always cleared." You don't like that solution, I understand, but any other solution would require some extended troubleshooting of the entire workflow, including all installs of Word that might contribute a Word doc to be placed in ID.

  • How to find the glyphs character using js in indesign cs2?

i want to find whether the glyphs character(registered trademark symbol)is applied with character style superscript or not, i cant able to fix the glyphs character in the find preference, how to do it?
    thanks
    subha

You are mixing two concepts. There is a
    i major
    difference between a
    b glyph
    and a
    b character.
A glyph is any singular graphic in a font.
A character is an instance of a character set (in InDesign, and in Mac OS X, it's the Unicode set; older programs use 'code pages' to translate codes into characters). [*]
Why are they different? Well, a ligature ('ffi', for example) is not a single character, containing the characters 'f', 'f', and 'i'. It
    i is
a single glyph in most fonts, but (usually!) you cannot insert an 'ffi' directly. Programs that do allow insertion of glyphs (again, such as InDesign) are also smart enough to decompose it into single characters 'f', 'f', and 'i' again.
Why is this distinction important? In CS2, you can search for
    i characters
    but not for
    i glyphs
(in CS3 and higher you can, but you cannot specify "+superscript").
All aside, you can insert a trademark character directly into InDesign by calling up the Glyphs :-) panel and double-click the glyph. (It works because the 'TM' is also a valid Unicode character.) Then just cut it, and paste into the 'Find' field of the Find Text box. Alternatively, since you can see the Unicode value in the Glyphs panel, you can enter the Unicode directly into the search field, surrounded by less-greater than: < 2122 > (without the spaces). This works for all Unicode characters.
Even better is that the character is also in the Find drop down menu -- "Registered Trademark Symbol". This inserts the shortcut "^r" in the Find box -- but it only works for a selected set of characters.
Since this is the Scripting forum, I'm guessing you want to use this in a script. Well, both "< 2212 >", and "^r" can be used in the search string to specify the character. Do the search and examine for each found item if it has a position Superscript or not.
[*] Post-edit: to expand a bit more, a table in the font associates Unicodes (character values) with glyphs, not the other way around. Every Unicode character available in the font associates to at least one single glyph. There may be more Unicodes than glyphs in a font (there is no law against associating more than one Unicode to a glyph -- for instance, both 'space' and 'non-breaking space' point to a single space glyph), and there may also be more glyphs than Unicodes (the 'ffi' glyph has a Unicode value -- now considered an early error in the Unicode definition! -- but the 'Th' glyph does not). Most programs only allow Unicode characters in text.

  • Cant find character direction option and i dont have those two buttons that change type direction

i downloaded a few hours ago the free one month trial of cc
    and i downloaded illustrator
but i seem to be missing the option to change the type directon from right to left and from left to right
at first it wrote hebrew words opposite... so if i write "hello" it would write"olleh" (in hebrew ofcourse)
but i was able to fix that by chosing the show indic option (under preference>type>show indie and then in parahgraph options "middle eastern and south asian single\every line composer")
my problem now is that i cant find the character direction option under character manu... and i cant change type to be from left to right or from right to left (the buttons under parahgraph window are simply missing)
so now if i want to write something like:  " *hebrew word* : ) "    it instead writes  "  : ) *hebrew word* "      (it mixes words with signs in a wierd way)
    I am running windows 7 64 bit
Please help me find out what im doing wrong? =\

  • Character Direction Override

    Windows 7, InD CS6.
We're getting a "character direction: left-to-right" override when importing Word 2003 files. I understand that there's a bunch of B.S. that comes with importing the Word files, what I'm wondering about is fixing this particular thing in InD. Oh, we're also getting an "underline color: black" override, more on that in a moment.
From what I've found on line it seems that unless you have the ME version of InD there is no way to select the "character direction" anywhere, in the find dialog or otherwise, to be able to fix this. True?
    So I scripted this (VBA):
        Set InD = CreateObject("InDesign.Application.CS6")
        Set IDoc = InD.ActiveDocument    InD.FindTextPreferences = idNothingEnum.idNothing
        InD.FindChangeTextOptions = idNothingEnum.idNothing
        InD.FindTextPreferences.CharacterDirection = idCharacterDirectionOptions.idLeftToRightDirection
        InD.ChangeTextPreferences.CharacterDirection = idCharacterDirectionOptions.idDefaultDirection
        IDoc.ChangeText
However, when the above is run it doesn't only remove the character direction override but ALSO the underline color override. Why would that be?
Some of the text affected by the overrides has superscript in it as well, which, thus far, has been seems to stay. However, I'm concerned that there might be some local formatting that's going to get removed like the underlnie color is getting removed.

When you place the Word doc, are you using Show Import Options? Are you mapping your Word text to InDesign paragraph styles? Are you mapping Word character styles to InDesign Character styles?

  • Hi! I do not find the option "Character Direction" in the palette "Paragraph"!

I do not find the option “Character Direction” in the palette “Paragraph”! I use Yosemite for Mac and Indesign CS6, CC and CC2014.

You have to install additionally a MENA version to your version. You have to change the application language in the CC app and install again.

  • Right-to-left character direction

Trying to enable the right to left character direction on CC 2014. It shows up under the Type menu drop down, but it's grayed out. Anyone know how to make this feature active?

  • Character Direction: where can I find the settings for this feature?

    Hi there,
I keep getting an override in my Paragraph Style-menu saying: "Character Direction: Left To Right". It might have to do with the fact that I'm using styles that were created in CS3 - I'm using old .indd-files.
Is this feature even mentioned somewhere in a menu or panel? Cause I've been looking everywhere and I'm getting slightly frustrated by now - even more because the Character Direction is in fact Left To Right as far as my eyes can see.
How can I clear the override without having to use Alt+click?
    Thnx.
    Gijs

That's my main issue with scripts, it should be easy, but somehow they hardly ever work for me.
Did what you said and I got this error. If I don't select the text frame it will give me another error. If I select the text it doesn't do anything.
Alt+click will do fine, don't worry. Thanx for the help though.

  • Missing € character when exporting from Indesign (CS4) to PDF

I think the subject line says it all. I'm not an expert user, but have not previously had
this problem. I get a new iMac with CS4 reinstalled
and now 'lose' the Euro character when I export my Indesign files to
PDF - does anyone have any advice please? Thanks.

Even so - I don't know why - but the problem is with some fonts that the Euro doesn't show.
I always use the Euro font for the Euro symbol and never have an issue.
Even if you do manage to get the Helvetica Euro to show up in the PDF there is a chance it can drop out at the RIP stage and not appear in print - I've seen it happen far too many times.
    Euro font is your friend.

  • Why doesn't the #target directive work in InDesign CC scripting?

I have a script which works fine when run from ExtendScript Toolkit on both InDesign CS4 and InDesign CC -- but I am unable to specifically target CC using the #target directive.
At the top of my .jsx file, if I put:
    #target "InDesign-6.0"
Then the script will open InDesign CS4 and run the script. However, if I put:
    #target "InDesign-9.0"
It throws a dialog error "InDesign-9.0" is undefined! I've tried 8.0 and 9.1 just in case I had the version number wrong; nothing works.
Now, it is true that I can get it to work by simply adding:
    #target "InDesign"
which targets the latest installed version, CC. BUT this is not a solution, just a workaround! I want to be absolutely sure I am targeting the specific version specified. Someday I may install a newer version alongside it, and then all of a sudden it will "jump" to that version when the script runs, and that's not what I want.
    Any suggestions?

After CS6 InDesign was completely converted to 64-bit application. However for windows platform 32-bit version was still supported. Hence for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit both type of versions were part of installation.
To distinguish between 32-bit and 64-bit version of InDesign, following targets are used.
    For Windows Use:
    #target "indesign-9.032"      //If want use 32-bit version indesign
    #target "indesign-9.064"      //If want use 64-bit version indesign
    For Mac Use:
#target "indesign-9.064"      //As Most of the MAC machine are already 64-bit , Only 64-bit InDesign is provided for Mac.

  • Greek character rendering problem in InDesign CS2

    Hi Experts,
I'm using InDesign CS2 for journal publication.
I have experienced a strange problem in Greek character rendering. We have used "Math_PI" font for greek characters and it display correctly in the story mode and not in the page mode in some places (in page mode it shows alphabet character instead of Greek). This problem identified in the particular place and not for entire article.
Please find the below screen shot for your quick reference. The highlighted character "f" should be greek "gamma" which rendered correctly in story mode but not in page view.

Are you sure the Character panel isn't hidden behind another panel (Window>Type&Tables>Character)? When you choose Type>Size>Other a dialog doesn't open, the size field in the Character panel gets selected:

  • Right-to-left text direction missing in Indesign CC 9.2

I'm trying to localize an English file to Arabic. According to some of Adobe help files there should be text direction in the Paragraph menu but I don't see them. The "Reverse Layout" option that is available in InDesign CS5 ME is not available in InDesign CC. How can I reverse the layout in InDesign CC and how can add the text direction buttons. I'm sure they are not there so do I need to download something additional.
    Please help!

You need to download and install the English-Hebrew or English-Arabic version. In the CC Desktop App you can click the gear icon and change the language to access them.

Script labels can't be disabled, so I'm not sure what your problem is -- perhaps seeing some code could help. Could it be that you're referencing a page item by label, but it is not responding because the item is part of a group?
