Character Mode ASCII Distribution
Hi,
I have a distribution report, Character Mode, ASCII format, that I can run without any problems from Report Builder, but the output is wrapping after what appears to be 80 characters, how do I make this wider? I've set my Main Section -> Character Mode -> Report Width to 190 without any change.
Thanks,
Lena Lafond
In the Layout Model, Header Section or Main Section or Trailer Section's properties according to which section you are referring to.
I think this is new with Reports 6i.

Save a character mode report to ascii file after previewing?
Question:
why isn't there a way to say generate a character mode report into an ascii file form the Previewer, am I missing somethig?
I know you can choose print and then print to file or choose generate to Postscript file, but it is not as clean as it is with bitmaps that you can preview and then save as: html, pdf, htmlcss, rtf etc.
very many thanks in advance,
ER.
nullI am really glad someone tried to help me. Truly thanks.
However, I am even more confused now because once I see my character mode report in the previewer and try to generate into an html file the message is:
rep-1920: Character mode runtime incompatible with desformat of pdf, html, htmlcss or rtf,
There is no such error with bitmap reports so why would it be a problem for the character report since you say it is converted to bitmap?
Other than that, even more important question is using this same report to be displayed on web: since there is no convinient storing in the local users space
in that case.
Thanks,

Running the report in Bitmap and Character mode
Hi,
We have the reports which can run in both the character mode and Bitmap mode. The only problem I'm facing is font size in the character mode report. If the report is run in Character mode then the font size of the report will be greater. As the sizer is bigger, I'm getting the X symbol in the place of report. Can i reduce the size of the font. I'm using the font Tahoma (8 points). Reports 6i Version and Windows Xp is the OS.
Regards,
Alok DubeyHi this may solve u'r problem
In Oracle Reports Designer, bitmap mode, you can make "C"
bold and in a different font and point size than "c". This
is because you are generating postscript output.
Postscript is a universal printer language and any
postscript printer is able to interpret your different
design instructions.
In Oracle Reports Designer, character mode, the
APPLICATIONS STANDARDS REQUIRE the report to be designed in
ONE FONT/ ONE CHARACTER SIZE. Character mode reports
generate ASCII output. In ASCII you cannot dynamically
change the font and character size. The standard is in
effect so a report prints as identically as possible from
both conventional and postscript printers.

'Ñ' Problem in Character Mode Report
i made a report in Character Mode, using PRT.
The problem is, when i generate report directly to the Dot Matrix Printer it didn't print the 'Ñ' character in my output, a corresponding ASCII character is printed instead. What could be the problem in my report or is it the printer???
PLEASE HELP ME!!! I NEED YOUR FEEDBACK, THANKS IN ADVANCE!Hi..
If you are directly giving Print from previewer..you need to set printer to 10 cpi (if you want bigger font) and 12 dpi to compress the larger font..
CPI is character per inch so in one inch 10 chr or 12 chr can fir acc to setting.
If you are uploading file on Oracle Apps then you need to set fonts if needed in concurrent manager, printer setting,Style, fonts ..
"But the hardware setting is vewry imp..set the font in DRAFT mode"..

Warning Msg: Character Mode report is being opened as a Bit-mapped report
Hi All,
I am opening a Oracle Standard Report in Oracle Apps "INVISMMX", while opening it shows the below warning message:
"Character Mode report is being opened as a Bit-mapped report"
What is the reason for this?
How can I open this report in ASCII mode itself?
Thanks,
GowriI believe Oracle Reports by default will open a report as a bit-mapped report. You can change the poperties of the report to make it a character mode report by:
1. If this is a new report, in the Object Navigator, click the Reports node,
then click in the toolbar.
2. Double-click the properties icon next to the report node to display
the Property Palette.
3. Under the report node, set the width and height properties as desired:
for example, 11 (or 15) width x 8.5 height for landscape or 8.5 width x 11
(or 15) height for portrait.
4. Under the Character Mode node:
a. Set Design In Character Units to Yes.
b. Set the report width and report height to the appropriate
character-mode dimensions for the report, such as, 132 (or 180)
width x 66 height for landscape or 102 width x 85 (or 116) height
for portrait.
5. In the Object Navigator, expand the Data Model node, then the System
Parameters node.
6. Double-click the MODE properties icon to display the Property Palette.
7. Under the Parameter node, set the initial value for property to Character.
8. In the Object Navigator, double-click on the Layout Model node icon.
9. In the Layout Model view, choose FormatLayout OptionsRulers to display
the Ruler Settings dialog box.
10. Set Units to Character Cells and Number of Snap Points Per Grid Spacing
to 1. Click OK.
11. Click View in the menu bar and make sure that Snap to Grid is checked.
12. Choose Tools Preferences to display the Preferences dialog box.
13. On the Preferences page, set Horizontal Interfield to 1 and Vertical
Interfield to 0. Click OK.
14. Choose Format Font, and select the font, style, and size that most
closely approximates the character-mode font (such as, Courier,
Regular, 12 point). -
In which situations we should use Character Mode Reports?
Question: In which situations we should use Character Mode Reports?
Explaination: I am faced with a certain situation. I feel that I should develop reports in Character Mode. But I am not sure about this.
I invite all readers to contribute on the subject matter. Once I receive responses, I will explain my specific situation as writing it now may narrow the list of such situations.
Also I would like to know what problems we face when developing reports in Character Mode. I was developing my first Character Mode report and I faced layering problems. So I would like to know more such precautions.
TIA
TariqHi Muhammad,
There's any number of cases for using character mode Reports. However, they all typically come down to what your doing with the output of the report.
Basically, you need character mode reports whenever the Report output needs to be read by some sort of Ascii file reader. This could be notepad, VI, MSVC, dot matrix or fixed character set printers, ...
A less common case is where you just want to get at the data within the report. You're just using the ascii output as a data dump to pass through to another program/utility. (This is really just a specialised case of the previous one).
There are some cases where character mode output may be one of several choices. Eg: the body of an email message which could be HTML or plain text.

What exactly is bitmapped report and character mode report/
hi
please differentiate between bit mapped and character mode reports
advantages and disadvantages?
when to use what?
thanks in advanceA character mode report is a ascii-report without colors, drawings, bit-mapped patterns, italic text and so on. Have a look at chapter 5.3.1 here: http://download-uk.oracle.com/otn_hosted_doc/forms/forms/A73073_01.pdf

Run Character mode reports in Menu/forms.
Hi,
we are using ora-dev-suite 10g and trying to Run Character mode reports in Menu/forms and output ascii text or pdf files generated and saved in local/client PC's.
report when run through report builder, it is ok.
But we are not able to run these reports through menus/forms. can we run these reports using background report engine on a click of button.
pl.guide us.
thanks.Hello,
You can put a variable in your default.env file like SERVER_URL http://<yourserver>:<yourport> and then retrieve it in forms with the tool_env.getvar package
declare v_server_url varchar2(100);
begin
tool_env.getvar(SERVER_URL,v_server_url);
/* then launch your report */
web.show_document(v_server_url||'/reports/rwservlet?yourparameters.....');
end;So if you deploy your form in server 1 or 2 you only have to change the value in the default.env file according to the server you use.
Hope this helps.

Hello,
we are upgrading to 11g, and all our reports are character mode formatted via .prt files, since character mode reports cannot be generated in pdf format, we don`t know how to access the reports, because we have dot matrix printers and the pdf don't work with these printers
Is there a way to run character mode report with preview screen and generate the right format (using the prt files we already have) ?
Thanks in advancedYou actually need 2 reports. See the Report Builder Help:
About creating an ASCII (character-mode) report
To create a character-mode report, you first create a bit-mapped report, then convert that report to an ASCII (character-mode) report. The process will create a new character-mode version of your bit-mapped report; the original bit-mapped report remains unchanged.
There is a step-by-step explanation in the Help. -
As i am not using laser printers tht's why we need all reports to be print in Character Mode.
How could we make report which will display in browser either in HTML / PDF ..but will print in character Mode.when you create a report you need to decide whether you create a character mode report or a bitmap report. charactermode reports can not be rendered in html, they will always be rendered in ascii, however, even in ascii they can be displayed in the browser. they'll just like simple text in the browser.
bitmap reports on the other hand can be renderen in all the output formats reports supports (html, pdf, ...) they use high fidelity formatitting and therefore can not be run to charactermode reports.
you can picture bitmap reports and charactermode reports as two separate models combined in a single tool. you can not exchange one model for the other on a given report. you need to define whether a report is bitmap or charactermode via a property in the report.
thanks,

Print landscape report in character mode
Hi!
It seems that I should change xxx.prt file in DESFORMAT parameter to match different kinds of printers in order to print landscape report in character mode.
Our customers are international wide. How can I do to make this setting meet every customer for printing reports in landscape style?
We will run the reports on Unix on the middle tier and customers read them in browser.
Thanks for help.
nullHi,
This sounds like a similar problem that I had (and still having). It was (is) a Bug. Go to metalink.oracle.com and reference this bug#1413754. See if this is your problem as well. My only work around was change the format of the file instead of using character mode I am now using PDF. Which is working fine for me.

I have an Oracle Reports Server 6i and Forms Server 6i on the same machine.
Operation system Windows 2000 Server.
I can not run reports with BITMAP mode after runing report in CHARACTER MODE.
1 report: I run report on Forms server using command line:
rwcli60.exe report=report1.rep MODE=CHARCTER DESTYPE=MAIL DESNAME=MyMail BACKGROUND=YES server=REP_SERVER
It works correct.
When I run report by URL:
2 report: http://myhost/rwcgi60.exe?report=report2.rep DESTYPE=CACHE DESFORMAT=HTML server=REP_SERVER MODE=BITMAP
Report fails with message
REP-1920 character mode runtime incompatible with DESFORMAT of PDF,HTML,HTMLCSS or RTF
Then I restart reports server service and report2 works correct but after runing report1 report2 does not work.
Whats are problem?Hi,
You are running into known bug 2460641. It is fixed in the latest patchset, patchset 13. Please give it a try as it should resolve your issue. If it does not, I'd suggest contacting Oracle Support.
Hope that helps,

Cannot print character mode in windows 2000
Hi,
When I try to execute a character mode report using a network printer the report does not run correctly (prt sheet size, escape sequences etc.).
There are three machines involved in this problem:
1) A Windows XP Professional running reports developer. This machine was used to develop the report. It will be reffered as WXP in the future. These are version details of this machine:
Report Builder 6.0.8.24.0
ORACLE Server Release 8.0.6.0.0
Oracle Procedure Builder 6.0.8.21.0
Oracle ORACLE PL/SQL V8.0.6.3.0 - Production
Oracle CORE Version 4.0.6.0.0 - Production
Oracle Tools Integration Services 6.0.8.18.0
Oracle Tools Common Area 6.0.8.18.0
Oracle Toolkit 2 for Windows 32-bit platforms 6.0.8.24.0
Resource Object Store 6.0.8.21.0
Oracle Help 6.0.8.24.0
Oracle Sqlmgr 6.0.8.18.0
Oracle Query Builder 6.0.7.1.0 - Production
PL/SQL Editor (c) WinMain Software (www.winmain.com), v1.0 (Production)
Oracle ZRC 6.0.8.22.0
Oracle Express 6.0.8.3.5
Oracle XML Parser 1.0.2.1.0 Production
Oracle Virtual Graphics System 6.0.5.38.0
Oracle Image 6.0.8.20.0
Oracle Multimedia Widget 6.0.8.20.0
Oracle Tools GUI Utilities 6.0.8.20.1
2) A Windows 2000 Server machine running reports runtime and accessed via windows terminal server. It will be reffered as W2000 in the future. These are version details of this machine:
Report Builder 6.0.8.24.0
ORACLE Server Release 8.0.6.0.0
Oracle Procedure Builder 6.0.8.21.0
Oracle ORACLE PL/SQL V8.0.6.3.0 - Production

Oracle XML Parser 1.0.2.1.0 Production
Oracle Virtual Graphics System 6.0.5.38.0
Oracle Image 6.0.8.20.0
Oracle Multimedia Widget 6.0.8.20.0
Oracle Tools GUI Utilities 6.0.8.20.1
As you can see, all versions are exactly the same in both machines.
3) A windows 98 machine with a epson fx-880+ printer atached on it. It will be referenced as W98.
When running the report from the WXP machine, directing the output to the W98 Epson FX-880+ it works fine: all escape sequences takes effect, the speed is good and the aligment is ok. But when running the same .rep report from the W2000 machine, directing the output to the same W98 printer, the escape sequences doesn't work and, worst, are printed. As a consequence of this, the aligment is wrong.
All of this was done to try to fix this problem:
1) The latest patch available for reports 6i is patch 15 which you can download from metalink -> patches -> Simple search -> patch number = 3171855. You can apply the latest patch and test (Raghavendra from metalink)
2) Apply the spool raw datatype workaround in Windows 2000, following these steps:
* Click Start , point to Settings , and then click Printers.
* Right-click the printer that you want to use and click Properties.
* On the Advanced tab, click Print Processor.
* Click Raw in the Default data type box.
* Click OK to confirm changes.
* On the Advanced tab, clear the Enable advanced printing features option.
* Click OK to confirm changes.
(From metalink Note:178433.1)
3) Edit the wide.prt file using dos edit instead of notepad, and using CTRL+P + ALT18 to obtain the ESC(18) character (just the same thing that was done in WXP machine) (From OTN Forum)
Does anyone wave any other idea?
Thanks,
Vinicius PachecoI'm replying my own question to inform what happens if anyone is facing same situation.
Initially thanks to Bob for your sugestion. It works! But not at first time.
I don't have administrator permission at the remote machine (W2000) to change the printer settings. So I made a request to the people who has. They made the changes, but the report still not working. After some tries we saw the reason: all the changes was for their user only. In my user this changes weren't active. So there are some things to check in this situation:
1) If you are not administrator, check if the changes made by another people are in effect in your account;
2) In some way your local printer definitons affects the remote printer (don't ask me why!!!), so check you local printer definition too.
I hope it helps!
