Character palette fails to insert characters

I have just discovered in Mavericks that the character palette fails to insert characters (such as the Portuguese ó)  in Pages and other applications.
Anyone else having this difficulty?

I can drag and drop into this no problem, see?
So, as for Word, it now works.
Word was being funky, so I FORCE QUIT out of Word, and restarted, and now I am able to drag into a Word Document.
Am embarrassed that I Didn't do that before writing in.
I don't have any idea why it wasn't working for me at all before.
Hopefully it won't happen again.

  • Character palette does not allow insert

    In the character palette, I can select every glyph. I can examine every character, Roman or not. However, the Insert button is always grayed out. This appears to be application-independent. It worked fine in 10.4.3.
    I'm sure there is some plist file I must delete, but I'm not sure which one. Any ideas?

    Not necessarily. I think there are some apps, including AppleWorks, that it just does not work with now, so you have to use the keyboard for special characters (or a replacement like PopChar). I doubt reinstalling the OS is going to fix these app specific issues.

    one could add one's own sybols.
    The Character Palette is just a reflection of your fonts, so what you need is a font with the symbol you want. If you put the Palette into glyph mode, you can check out what is in Dingbats, Webdings, Wingdings, etc. But I don't think there is a paw. So you would need to make a font with a paw in it. Here are a couple links for font making:

    I sent several of them to my yahoo
    mail and they did not come through
    You probably need to set the encoding on your browser or mail program to UTF-8.

  • Bug Report: Character Palette Does Not Update When Placing Text Cursor

    Steps to reproduce:
    Create some text and make it 12px in size
    Create another block of text and make it 24px in size
    When you place the text cursor back onto the first block of text the character palette still reads 24px
    if you then drag the cursor over the text to highlight multiple characters THEN the font size changes to 12px
    Expected results:
    in 3, above, when you click on text using the text tool the character palette should immediately be updated with the font size of the text selected.

  • Character palette no longer works for me with Leopard

    I need to use the Character Palette frequently in my work, but since going to 10.5 it is not working. Only the bottom part appears, starting with the "View" drop-down menu, and under that the large character on the left and the "Related" scroll box next to it. Therefore, I can't select any other characters from the categories that should be at the top of the CP (or were in 10.4), and I'm stuck with whatever happens to appear in the large character box. How can I get the whole CP back?

    For some unknown reason the international data caches can get corrupted and prevent character palette and keyboard viewer to appear in the input tab of the international preference pane. This also prevent from working the special characters item in the edit menu of many applications, including the Finder, Safari and Text Edit.
    If this happened to you, go to System/Library/Caches folder and trash the following files (don't worry, they will be re-created when you restart your Mac):
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.kbdx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.sbdl
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.tecx
    As you are attempting to cancel files from System folder, you will be asked for an administrator ID and password.
    If you don't have an administrator ID and password, ask the system manager in your office.
    After you insert an administrator ID and password, the files will be trashed.
    Restart your Mac.
    Open System Prefererences (in the apple menu, or inside the main Applications folder), open the International pane, and click the input menu. You will find again the character palette and keyboard viewer items with their chechboxes.
    Click the two checkboxes. Be sure to click also at the bottom of the pane the checkbox labeled show the keyboard menu in the menu bar.
    Exit System Preferences.
    In the right side of the menu bar you will find a menulet with your nation's flag. Click the flag and you will find both character palette and keyboard viewer.
    Also, the special characters item in the edit menu of the applications that have this item will work as expected, and will open the characters palette.

  • Character Palette MIA

    Is it possible that I bought a computer that does not have a character palette installed? Under any application, I can click Edit > Special Characters and NOTHING HAPPENS. Even when I go to International under System Preferences there is no Keyboard Viewer option which is supposed to be another way to access the special characters. I desperately need this option to do homework for a phonetics/phonology class I'm taking. Please help!

    I actually did find an answer eventually (took about two hours on the phone with apple) and I should have posted it right away. Anyway, here it is: you have to reinstall all your applications using the two disks you got when you bought the computer. It's pretty self explanatory once you insert the first disk The only thing important thing to remember is to go to options when it asks you where you want to install it and mark "archive and install" otherwise you'll lose everything. When both disks are done (it took about two hours for me), go to your hard drive and delete the file named "previous system" (or something like that; you might want to double check). Hope this works for you too!

  • Character palette window malfunction

    In trying to sort out a problem I was having with non-English fonts, I went to the Help Viewer and thought I had a lead with the Special Characters selection under the Edit menu. I opened the Special Characters window and found a variety of non-English fonts (I was specially interested in Hebrew). The instructions said to open an application and select the charachter. I opened Textedit and made an attempt which did not work that I could tell. What it did do, was cause the Character Palette window to malfunction. It flashes partially open on an irregular but frequent basis, perhaps connected to program activity. The window appears in the middle of the screen, it is titled and has the litlle rotating activity icon in the middle but is blank otherwise. It remains for less than a second and then disappears. When I look at it with the Console utility, it gives this sort of message:

    Fully understand the frustration
    Open "Activity Monitor" in /Applications/Utilities/
    On the panel you will see all of the programs in memory
    scroll down and one click on "ChaPaletteServer" it will highlight
    click on "Quit Process" at the top of the screen
    that should clear it
    To use another language I select it in System Preferences > International > Input Menu
    enable "Character Palette" and "Keyboard Viewer"
    at the bottom of the pane
    enable "Allow a different input source for each document"
    and "Show input menu in menu bar"
    Open Textedit
    click on the flag icon on the menu bar
    select "Show keyboard viewer"
    select the language
    and away you go - the keyboard viewer shows the characters as available on your keyboard
    You can access the International Prefs from the icon as well so if you want to deselect a language you can but change back to English (if that's you normal language) before doing so

  • Character Palette no longer works properly

    I use the character palette frequently and it worked beautifully in 10.4.4, especially in Keynote. Now I can not use Math symbols unless I select the symbol font. Before the symbol would appear when I double clicked it in the palette window regardless of which font was selected. Further, Keynote presentations I had created under system 10.4.4 were changed so that the characters I had selected previously are gone. Now I have to reenter every character and that means undoing the build that is associated with the line in the slide. Is there a fix for this? Is this a quirk of the latest upgrade to 10.4.5? Any help to salvage hours of work will be greatly appreciated.

    I noticed the first time that the character for "proportional to" would not work. Also the Boolean algebra symbols do not work. Only the Capitol Pi and Sigma and integral signs work. The triple equal sign, congruency sign, and nearly equal character do not come through. They did in the past. It is possible that these characters were automatically converted to Apple Symbol or gothic without my being aware of it. I did not check when they were used in the past.
    I do not know what caused the loss, but suspect it is somehow part of the new system update. If I can use Apple Gothic or Apple symbol fonts for the symbols I need then I will adapt and use them. On the other hand if I have some kind of error in the code in my system or the application I need to know it.
    I would prefer to be able to use the character palette directly as in the past, but perhaps that is wishful thinking.
    I did reload Keynote 3 and it made no difference. I am loathe to reload the system and revert back if it can be avoided. thank you for your input thus far, it has helped me sort out what is going on.

  • Character palette

    My 'character palette' will not work with 'Appleworks' files although it does work with 'Mail'.
    I upgraded from Panther to Tiger OSX six months ago. Have I missed a 'Preference' panel?

    The main characters I need are the fractions and the degrees centigrade sign.
    Try Option/alt + shift + 8 for degrees.
    Fractions are not possible without a special font because AW is so old.
    Use TextEdit instead and you can do everything from Character Palette

  • Character Palette Favorites: Sort / Reorder

    In a previous version of Character Palette I was able to move/sort/reorder characters in the Favorites panel. How do I do this now? I really like this utility in OS X, but it could be vastly improved.

    There are two possibilities, one is easy, the other not so much. Try deleting these:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist"
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Caches/com.apple.CharPaletteCache.plist"
    That will reset it to defaults. The other possibility is a bad or damaged font. Tracking down which one can be difficult. If you have added fonts you can start by disabling the ones you've added yourself (in my case the weirdness started when I added an old Adobe Garamonde font), then add them back one at a time until you find the bad one.

  • Character Palette Berzerk

    When I go into the Character Palette, set the View to All Characters & click 'by Radical' the palette locks up completely. I can still turn it on/off thru the menu, as well as turning off the pref altogether. But as long as it remains on it periodically attempts to display but disappears instantly.
    Various actions seem to trigger its attempt to display, such as opening/closing files, switching windows, etc., but the only 'cure' is to delete com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist, which is obviously being corrupted by the action described above.
    Does anyone know if this is a known issue or why the behavior occurs? I have found no specific reference in Discussioons or elsewhere.
    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanx for the reply, Tom. I think you hit the nail on the head... I did remove most unneeded fonts from the System fonts folder, not realizing that Character Palette uses it directly.
    Since Character Palette works just fine otherwise I'm simply going to stay away from the 'Radicals' altogether.

  • Unable to insert characters in pages

    I recently upgraded to Lion and have found it impossible to insert characters into documents with Pages'09. When I was running Snow Leopard, I used to be able to open the Character Viewer and select the character or symbol I wanted to use and click the insert button. But now the INSERT BUTTON has been removed and I don't know how to insert characters or symbols using Lion. Can someone help?

    When you double-click on the character, it will be inserted into your document wherever the cursor is.
    There is no need to Copy and Paste. In fact if you do a Copy, you will place Information about the character on the Clipboard, not the character itself. See this screen shot of the Control-Click menu for the ℞ symbol:

  • How to (once again) customize the Character Palette's Favorites pane?

    Way back in the dark days of OSX (wait, I think we're still then) I immediately found and had major use for the Character Palette (hooray for Unicode integration!). It has been indispensable in a wide variety of things, including Japanese document manipulation, music notation, subtitle generation in DSP, and mathematical formulae layouts.
    Early on it had an easy to operate customization for the favorites pane, so you could arrange the glyphs by category (great for Japanese punctuation symbols) or layout (very helpful in mathematics). However...
    That function seems to be long gone, and there is actually no useful help either under "Apple Help" or the Apple website for the Character Palette -- telling people how to access accented characters with it is something almost anybody can figure out in about 10 seconds, and that is pretty much the limit for help with the Character Palette.
    So, the question is, "*_is there any way to customize the layout of the Favorites pane any more?_*" This could include odd key-combos, hidden buttons, or even hacking the prefs file (which I am having a hard time finding, since there are thousands of pref files and hundreds of directories to search, and Spotlight refuses to look in the system areas -- still yearning for the return of Panther's "Find" function).
    Someone asked this question about a year ago, but got no response, so I will be very grateful for any help at all.

  • Cannot insert characters

    Hi everybody! I wonder if anyone has ever managed to fix the following character issue: whenever we select Characters on the Insert menu, a dialog box containing the characters does not appear. We have a required folder Characters in C:\Users\<user_name>\Documents\Adobe\eLearning Assets\Characters. We’re currently using Adobe Captivate 6.0 (Version 6.0.1.240).
    Does anyone know the most possible reason of this issue? As we know characters are included in the standard package, they should work but they don’t. Thanks!

    Did you tried resetting the preferences for Captivate yet?
    Please try to recreate the preferences of Adobe Captivate 6 . Close Captivate.
    For Windows-
    For Captivate 6 64 bit- Go to C Drive > Program Files > Adobe > Adobe Captivate 6 x64 > utils > Run the CleanPreferencesWin.bat file by double clicking on it.
    For Captivate 6 32 bit- Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 6 (32 Bit)\utils > Run the CleanPreferencesWin.bat file by double clicking on it.
    For Mac OS- On Finder > Go > Go to Folder > Type- ~/Library go to preferences and rename Adobe Captivate 6.0 folder to Adobe Captivate 6.0_old.
    Relaunch Captivate and try again to insert the characters.

  • Shortcuts for the character palette

    Is it possible to have a shortcut for the characters in the character palette?

    I recommend this Applescript:
    do shell script "open /System/Library/Components/CharacterPalette.component/Contents/SharedSupport/Ch arPaletteServer.app"
    Save it as "Application" to launch with a doubleclick. From the Applescript menu it can just be a compiled script.
    You can also launch it from Terminal with just the shell command, if you go that way.
