Character palette flashes blank window

When I try to use the Character Palette by pulling down the "flag" menu, a blank window appears and randomly flashes.
I tried trashing the com.apple.IntlDataCache files in the System/Library/Caches folder, but that didn't solve the problem.
I also reinstalled Leopard. The problem is still there. (I have not installed the updates, yet.)
What now, Coach?

There are a few other plists that you can eliminate.
Missing character palette: true easy solution, may provide a solution to your problem.

Why is Character Palette flashing on & off on my screen?

When working in Pages, suddenly the Character Palette became non-functioning...I saved my document, then closed the program, but the non-functioning Character Palette continued to show. I then tried a re-boot-shut down the computer & restarted it. It then froze once it opened & didn't show any docking station or other menu items---rebooting 3 times continued this freeze. I then shut down, unplugged & restarted. This time the docking station & everything else showed up, but for some reason the Character Palette flashed on & off-a completely blank window with just the title...it's still flashing on & off randomly! Do I attempt a reboot again? What's the bug? I'm frustrated!!

welcome to the Pages Discussions. This problem was mentioned in some threads and this is what helped before:
Try to delete the "com.apple.CharPaletteCache.plist" at "<YourHDName>/Users/<YourAccount>/Library/Caches/"? And the "com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist" at "<YourHDName>/Users/<YourAccount>/Library/Preferences".

Character palette window malfunction

In trying to sort out a problem I was having with non-English fonts, I went to the Help Viewer and thought I had a lead with the Special Characters selection under the Edit menu. I opened the Special Characters window and found a variety of non-English fonts (I was specially interested in Hebrew). The instructions said to open an application and select the charachter. I opened Textedit and made an attempt which did not work that I could tell. What it did do, was cause the Character Palette window to malfunction. It flashes partially open on an irregular but frequent basis, perhaps connected to program activity. The window appears in the middle of the screen, it is titled and has the litlle rotating activity icon in the middle but is blank otherwise. It remains for less than a second and then disappears. When I look at it with the Console utility, it gives this sort of message:

I can't seem to make it stop. Relaunching the Finder didn't help. Logging out didn't help. Turning the machine completely off and restarting didn't help. Its driving me nuts...

Fully understand the frustration
Open "Activity Monitor" in /Applications/Utilities/
On the panel you will see all of the programs in memory
scroll down and one click on "ChaPaletteServer" it will highlight
click on "Quit Process" at the top of the screen
that should clear it
To use another language I select it in System Preferences > International > Input Menu
enable "Character Palette" and "Keyboard Viewer"
at the bottom of the pane
enable "Allow a different input source for each document"
and "Show input menu in menu bar"
Open Textedit
click on the flag icon on the menu bar
select "Show keyboard viewer"
select the language
and away you go - the keyboard viewer shows the characters as available on your keyboard
You can access the International Prefs from the icon as well so if you want to deselect a language you can but change back to English (if that's you normal language) before doing so

Buttons within Flash won't open links or files in blank windows in IE 7!

I have a bunch of flash files on my website that I use as
menus. Some of these menus have buttons call links and files to be
opened in a blank window but this won't seem to work in Internet
Explorer 7. Are there any fixes to this problem?

this is not a globaly known issue but probably a problem with
the code you are using and/or some
kind of popup blocker installed in your browser or security
setting you have made. If it is a code
issue we would need to see your pasted code at least to take
a stab at it.

Bug Report: Character Palette Does Not Update When Placing Text Cursor

Steps to reproduce:
Create some text and make it 12px in size
Create another block of text and make it 24px in size
When you place the text cursor back onto the first block of text the character palette still reads 24px
if you then drag the cursor over the text to highlight multiple characters THEN the font size changes to 12px
Expected results:
in 3, above, when you click on text using the text tool the character palette should immediately be updated with the font size of the text selected.

Character Palette no longer works properly

I use the character palette frequently and it worked beautifully in 10.4.4, especially in Keynote. Now I can not use Math symbols unless I select the symbol font. Before the symbol would appear when I double clicked it in the palette window regardless of which font was selected. Further, Keynote presentations I had created under system 10.4.4 were changed so that the characters I had selected previously are gone. Now I have to reenter every character and that means undoing the build that is associated with the line in the slide. Is there a fix for this? Is this a quirk of the latest upgrade to 10.4.5? Any help to salvage hours of work will be greatly appreciated.

I noticed the first time that the character for "proportional to" would not work. Also the Boolean algebra symbols do not work. Only the Capitol Pi and Sigma and integral signs work. The triple equal sign, congruency sign, and nearly equal character do not come through. They did in the past. It is possible that these characters were automatically converted to Apple Symbol or gothic without my being aware of it. I did not check when they were used in the past.
I do not know what caused the loss, but suspect it is somehow part of the new system update. If I can use Apple Gothic or Apple symbol fonts for the symbols I need then I will adapt and use them. On the other hand if I have some kind of error in the code in my system or the application I need to know it.
I would prefer to be able to use the character palette directly as in the past, but perhaps that is wishful thinking.
I did reload Keynote 3 and it made no difference. I am loathe to reload the system and revert back if it can be avoided. thank you for your input thus far, it has helped me sort out what is going on.

Show Character Palette corrupted

If I choose Show Character Palette from the Menu Bar at the right hand side of the screen, the palette appears but is blank and cycles on and off every few seconds. Before this happened I had been trying to access one of the other tabs in this palette (don't know which one, of course, being unable to see the blank palette).
I've tried the tip of deleting the following files from the system>library>cache and rebooting:
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.kbdx
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.sbdl
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.tecx
Although my files didn't have the ".le" at the end of the file names it still worked insofar as I was able to, at least, "Hide Character Palette".
I had an idea it might be a fonts issue as I haven't been able to launch Address Book or iCal for some time now.
Any ideas please?

To keep the Character Palette from playing "Pop Goes the Weasel", delete the following file from the Preferences folder in your user account.
com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
Restart your Mac.

Try deleting the Character Palette preference file: /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag this file from the Preferences folder: com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.

Wordpress 'Like' in comment section produces separate blank window

Click on 'like' in comment section of post on WordPress producing blank window with the address shown below.
I have tried this in Maxthon & IE, and all is normal.
The blank window is a verification of some kind??

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

Firefox opens with tiny blank window.

I recently stopped using the session manager feature of the Tab Mix Plus extension so I could use Firefox 13's Tabs on Demand feature. Since I made the switch, I've been having a strange problem. Usually (not always, but maybe 4 times out of 5) when I start Firefox, instead of displaying a normal browser window it displays a tiny blank window. The window is just wide enough for an icon and the min/max/close buttons. There are no toolbars or chrome of any kind (not even the Firefox menu). The window is resizable, but resizing it doesn't reveal any contents.
I can fix this by starting Firefox in Safe Mode (which properly restores all of my open tabs) and then restarting the browser, after which point it works normally until I have to restart it again. So nearly every time I open the browser I first have to open it in Safe Mode and then restart it.
I've tried disabling Tab Mix Plus (which I still use for other features), but that didn't help. I'm not sure which of my other extensions might be causing the problem. Has anyone else seen this issue? I'm stumped about what could be causing it. Thanks in advance for any help!

I was about to say earlier: Are you sure that solved your problem? As disabling then re-enabling your addons shouldn't have solved this problem so easily.
I really doubt Flash is causing this. You could have a corrupted localstore.rdf file. Or it might be possible there's a problem with your session restore files. There might be extra copies that shouldn't be there causing this.
Go to '''Firefox button <img src=https://support.mozilla.org/media/uploads/images/2012-03-27-09-22-48-1204f1.png> > Help > Troubleshooting Information''' then click on the '''Show Folder''' button.
Once the window for the profile folder opens, close Firefox. Then look for a file named localstore.rdf in that folder and delete it. Restart Firefox and see if the problem stays gone. That file remembers the size & position of your Firefox windows. Maybe it needed to be deleting manually. The Safe Mode "Reset Toolbars" choice madperson told you to use was supposed to delete this file and I think it did since you lost the organization of your toolbar icons. But this is just to be sure.

 With the window for the profile folder still open, look for files named sessionstore-#.js.
 Ex. sessionstore-2.js, sessionstore-3.js, etc.
If you see these files, temporarily move them to the Recycle Bin in case we need them later. The file with the highest number attached should be your latest, most recent backup of your tabs & windows. Ex. sessionstore-8.js vs. sessionstore-9.js
To compare, tell us what size your original sessionstore.js file is & what the size is of the highest numbered copy of the same file is. Also I'm wondering how many tabs you have restored when you use Firefox Safe Mode? You can guess/estimate.
If no numbered sessionstore files are found, I'm pretty sure it's a addon responsible. One of them could have a new bug since Firefox 13 changed some code.
Try disabling add-ons this way instead of with Firefox Safe Mode:

Character Palette Berzerk

When I go into the Character Palette, set the View to All Characters & click 'by Radical' the palette locks up completely. I can still turn it on/off thru the menu, as well as turning off the pref altogether. But as long as it remains on it periodically attempts to display but disappears instantly.
Various actions seem to trigger its attempt to display, such as opening/closing files, switching windows, etc., but the only 'cure' is to delete com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist, which is obviously being corrupted by the action described above.
Does anyone know if this is a known issue or why the behavior occurs? I have found no specific reference in Discussioons or elsewhere.
Any input would be appreciated.

Thanx for the reply, Tom. I think you hit the nail on the head... I did remove most unneeded fonts from the System fonts folder, not realizing that Character Palette uses it directly.
Since Character Palette works just fine otherwise I'm simply going to stay away from the 'Radicals' altogether.

Character palette super tiny

Anybody know how to fix this? My character palette is opening up to be just big enough to see the red "close window" button in the top left corner of the window.
I trashed my system preferences plist file; could not find anything specific to the character palette.

I found this KB Article Chinese Language Kit 2.0: About The TrueType Font Editor.
From reviewing that, I think what I have discovered is, that the input mode palette, that you are looking for, works for Chinese languages.
The international language that you have enabled, Japanese Kana Palette, doesn't seem to utilize the input menu
Try this:
In SP > International > Input Menu, checkmark the option Show input menu in menu bar.
Then from that icon, select Show Japanese Kana Palette.
Does it open for you now?

HELP!! Lost the "character palette" - how do I retrieve it?

Somehow I managed to lose the "character palette" - it froze, and I couldn't get it to close, so I shut down the computer, but when it restarted, the character palette would not open. Or rather, a blank "ghost" of it appeared for a couple of seconds, then vanished. Clicking on either "show palette" or "hide palette" does nothing. I tried Spotlight to try to locate it on the hard drive, but nothing that showed up led me to it.
Any ideas? Will I have to reinstall it?

It sounds like you may have a bad font. That happened
to me once and I discovered Character Palette was
very sensitive to bad fonts. You might also try
deleting:
"/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.CharPal
etteServer.plist"
If removing that doesn't do it I suspect you'll have
to start looking at your fonts to find the one
causing the problem. In my case it was an old Adobe
Garamonde font I had installed not long before I
discovered the Character Palette problem.

Keyboard Viewer+ Character Palette = madness

I am going crazy!!
I turned on the keyboard viewer and the character palette.
Then I closed their windows. I turned them off in System Preferences.
They return every time I wake from sleep or screensaver.
I tried to delete all kinds of preferences. (Any that would change when I enabled
these two windows I would trash.) No good so far.
Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Update: I was using "Require password when waking from sleep..."
I stopped using that. No more character palette.
I re-enabled the password thing.
The character palette from H*ll returns.
Weird how it is coupled to the password thing.
Next I am trying logging out, restart etc.
