Character Palette no longer works properly

I use the character palette frequently and it worked beautifully in 10.4.4, especially in Keynote. Now I can not use Math symbols unless I select the symbol font. Before the symbol would appear when I double clicked it in the palette window regardless of which font was selected. Further, Keynote presentations I had created under system 10.4.4 were changed so that the characters I had selected previously are gone. Now I have to reenter every character and that means undoing the build that is associated with the line in the slide. Is there a fix for this? Is this a quirk of the latest upgrade to 10.4.5? Any help to salvage hours of work will be greatly appreciated.

I noticed the first time that the character for "proportional to" would not work. Also the Boolean algebra symbols do not work. Only the Capitol Pi and Sigma and integral signs work. The triple equal sign, congruency sign, and nearly equal character do not come through. They did in the past. It is possible that these characters were automatically converted to Apple Symbol or gothic without my being aware of it. I did not check when they were used in the past.
I do not know what caused the loss, but suspect it is somehow part of the new system update. If I can use Apple Gothic or Apple symbol fonts for the symbols I need then I will adapt and use them. On the other hand if I have some kind of error in the code in my system or the application I need to know it.
I would prefer to be able to use the character palette directly as in the past, but perhaps that is wishful thinking.
I did reload Keynote 3 and it made no difference. I am loathe to reload the system and revert back if it can be avoided. thank you for your input thus far, it has helped me sort out what is going on.

Character palette no longer works for me with Leopard

I need to use the Character Palette frequently in my work, but since going to 10.5 it is not working. Only the bottom part appears, starting with the "View" drop-down menu, and under that the large character on the left and the "Related" scroll box next to it. Therefore, I can't select any other characters from the categories that should be at the top of the CP (or were in 10.4), and I'm stuck with whatever happens to appear in the large character box. How can I get the whole CP back?

For some unknown reason the international data caches can get corrupted and prevent character palette and keyboard viewer to appear in the input tab of the international preference pane. This also prevent from working the special characters item in the edit menu of many applications, including the Finder, Safari and Text Edit.
If this happened to you, go to System/Library/Caches folder and trash the following files (don't worry, they will be re-created when you restart your Mac):
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.kbdx
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.sbdl
com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.tecx
As you are attempting to cancel files from System folder, you will be asked for an administrator ID and password.
If you don't have an administrator ID and password, ask the system manager in your office.
After you insert an administrator ID and password, the files will be trashed.
Restart your Mac.
Open System Prefererences (in the apple menu, or inside the main Applications folder), open the International pane, and click the input menu. You will find again the character palette and keyboard viewer items with their chechboxes.
Click the two checkboxes. Be sure to click also at the bottom of the pane the checkbox labeled show the keyboard menu in the menu bar.
Exit System Preferences.
In the right side of the menu bar you will find a menulet with your nation's flag. Click the flag and you will find both character palette and keyboard viewer.
Also, the special characters item in the edit menu of the applications that have this item will work as expected, and will open the characters palette.

Pages '09 Character Spacing No Longer Working

So I tried the new Pages 5 today and it is lacking too many features to count, but most notably for me facing pages and character spacing. I went back to use Pages '09 (version 4.3) and character spacing no longer works for many fonts.
For example, with Century Gothic, when I increase the font size, the characters overlap. When I decreate the font size, they space out like crazy. It's like the physical space the letters take up stays the same regardless of the font size. The character spacing slider in inspector does not work at all for these problem fonts.

I am kind of freaking out - I use Pages to lay out books for my clients and I have no idea what to do. Can anyone help me figure out what to do? I suspect Pages '09 is no longer working for me as a result of the Mavericks upgrade, but I really don't know since I just upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago and hadn't been using Pages with anything other than the Calibri and Impact fonts (which are working fine) since then. Today I started a new book in Pages 5, discovered Century Gothic wouldn't work, so tried to go back to Pages 4.3 and discovered the problem.

Okay, so I think I fixed my issue of some fonts not spacing properly in Pages '09 since I updated to Mavericks and installed Pages 5. It's weird though (at least to me)!
1) I tried deleting and reinstalling the font... that didn't work.
2) Per the suggestion in another post, I checked Pages '09 in another account on this computer. I logged out of my account and logged into the guest user account. I opened Pages '09.
3) I typed something into a blank document. The default font was Helvetica, but it was showing up very weird - all these accented, unrecognizable characters. I tried Century Gothic (the font I've been using as an example in this thread). It worked fabulously! I could increase the font, decrease the font, etc. and it behaved normally - no wonky spacing or overlapping characters.
4) Confused by why Helvetica was no longer working now, I opened up FontBook in the guest user account. To my surprise, there were at least a dozen duplicate fonts... this was not an issue in the main account I was having the issue in. Incidentally, Helvetica was NOT one of the fonts with a duplicate - it validated fine.
5) I highlighted all of the fonts and selected to resolve duplicates automatically.
6) I went back into Pages '09 (I may have quit and restarted the application) in the guest user account (same account I was already in). Suddenly, Helvetica was working. Century Gothic was working. Everything seemed to be working.
7) I logged out of the guest user account and logged back into my main account.
8) I re-opened Pages '09 and started a new document. It still works! I looked in FontBook. It looks exactly like how it looked before - no duplicate fonts.
SO: Although no one has ever used the guest account on this computer, it seems to me that somehow its FontBook was totally messed up and somehow resolving the duplicate fonts in the guest user FontBook also fixed my issue in my own account (even though there were no duplicates in that FontBook in the first place).
I am thrilled that this is working, but confused as to why. If any of you smartie pants' out there can shed some light, it would be mucho appreciated.

My computer which is a packard bell vista operating system, recently stopped working as the power supply overheated and blew up and it has recently been sent back to the Know How team at PC world and it seems to be since it came back I now cannot open iTunes. I have also tried to search for iTunes in the search bar, I can see several files, but can't seem to open any of these either. I think that quicktime isn't working, either.
I have over 4000 songs in iTunes that I had recorded from my collectiong of CD's am going to loose all these now? Can anyone help, with very easy instructions as I really don't know what I am doing??

I would copy over the entire thing if you have room. With iTunes 10.4 though, you can download any previous iTunes purchases you have made in the past with your current iTunes account. While in iTunes, look at the left hand side of your screen and select "Purchases" and look at the bottom right corner of the screen and select "Download Previous Purchases". If you have an iPhone, iPod and/or iPad...you can do the same thing from each device. Nice new feature...just remember that those ripped CDs need a back-up!!! Enjoy...

I think it is some sort of permissions issue preventing the installer from updating the shortcuts. Is your account an administrator of the machine? If it is and you still have the problem then you may need to explicitly use the "Administrator" account for the install.

The first thing I would try is to update Acrobat 9 to the latest version 9.5.5
The next thing would be to run Acrobat 9 in Windows 7 or Vista or XP Compatibility Mode.

Interactive PDF: Rollover button state no longer working properly ???

Okay, what's going on with the Interactive PDFs lately?
Now all my rollover buttons no longer work properly. If I have a button that's simply a black arrow, and in the rollover state it's red.
No matter if I'm checking it out in the latest Acrobat Reader or Pro X, the rollover only works for a brief second..then reverts back to black - the original state.

Hhmmm...I'm actually having this problem even with Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional. Does this make sense?
Again, I'm creating the document in InDesign CS5 and then building the PDF with Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional, and the rollover effects don't work in Adobe Acrobat 9, Adobe Reader 9, and Adobe Reader 10.
I'm a bit new to this process of software not providing its basic touted functionality. Is this the kind of thing where support for this functionality will vary from product to product? I had the same issue with PDF Portfolio -- where all its functioanlity was not supported in Adobe Reader X. If so, perhaps I should simply stick with the classic features of PDFs. Or can I trust, reliability, that going forward, this rollover effect will be supported in all Adobe Reader versions? This is quite an important issue for me as I provide all the documentation for my employer, including customer facing documentation -- and I simply don't know. Any recommendations?

? I guess Creative doesn't care about living up to the promise that their product is upgradeable as new technologies emerge such as VISTA. They were give plenty of warning, that it was coming out, and it has been out for some time. Old Edge projects no longer working properly

All my Edge projects I did back in 2012 are no longer working properly when i open them in the new Edge CC. Most (if not all) start-positions are wrong, animations go the wrong way and so on. Is there a way of getting it back to work without re-doing everything? An "import" or something?

Youtube is no longer working properly on my iphone 3gs.

After last two iOS updates have been have trouble with my 3GS. Mostly battery life, but after the last update youtube no longer works properly. It won't hardly load on at&t 3G network anymore, and even on wifi it will freeze up and not buffer. Really disgusted with apple and am consider rather then upgrade to 5G when it comes out going to google.

IPhoto Functions No Longer Working Properly?

Since updating from OS10.3.3 to O10.3.9 my iPhoto no longer works properly. Reducing red eye leaves an ugly greenish-bluish-black mark, for example. I have checked for upgrades. None available. Does anyone know how, or if, this can be fixed? Thanks

Reducing red eye leaves an ugly greenish-bluish-black mark
"Reducing" red-eye is a little misleading. It's removed, not reduced, and what you're seeing is the absence of color. The effect shouldn't be very noticeable unless you're zoomed in for very close viewing, in which case you'll need to use a more sophisticated image editor to fix the red-eye.
