Character palette problem

Hi, I created an Pages document to do a "scrapbook" page. I wanted to use a special character so I opened the font menu, then selected characters... on the flyout menu, and now I have a character palatte that blinks on and off when I switch from an app or doc to the finder, regardless of whether I have Pages running or not. It even flashes onto the screen momentarily when I switch Web sites. Or even switch fields on a Web page, such as this one.
it never stays on long enough for me to grab it. It won't let me close it. It show nothing but the palette border and that crazy spinning dial.
Is there some way to get rid of this? And why did it happen to begin with? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is supremely annoying.

Hello Jean,
welcome to the Pages Discussions. Can you please write a few details about your software versions and about you hardware? It will help to get a solution more easily, but of course it will not guarantee that.
Have you tried to delete the "com.apple.CharPaletteCache.plist" at "<YourHDName>/Users/<YourAccount>/Library/Caches/"? And there is the "com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist" at "<YourHDName>/Users/<YourAccount>/Library/Preferences".
Frank.

  • The same old Character Palette problem

Yep. I've got the same old Character Palette problem. Running Mac OS X 10.4.10, all the latest updates, checked the forums for all the help I could find, and tried everything, and still every **** time I sign in or come back from sleep, the character palette shows up!

    hey, husayndas
i'm currently having this exact same thing happen!!
could you outline exactly how you managed to turn the palette off?
    much appreciated!

  • HELP!! Lost the "character palette" - how do I retrieve it?

Somehow I managed to lose the "character palette" - it froze, and I couldn't get it to close, so I shut down the computer, but when it restarted, the character palette would not open. Or rather, a blank "ghost" of it appeared for a couple of seconds, then vanished. Clicking on either "show palette" or "hide palette" does nothing. I tried Spotlight to try to locate it on the hard drive, but nothing that showed up led me to it.
Any ideas? Will I have to reinstall it?
    Thanks for any suggestions.......

It sounds like you may have a bad font. That happened
to me once and I discovered Character Palette was
very sensitive to bad fonts. You might also try
    deleting:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.CharPal
    etteServer.plist"
If removing that doesn't do it I suspect you'll have
to start looking at your fonts to find the one
causing the problem. In my case it was an old Adobe
Garamonde font I had installed not long before I
    discovered the Character Palette problem.

THANK YOU-- THANK YOU-- THANK YOU!!!
Your suggestion worked like a dream. I truly appreciate your responding so quickly.

  • Character palette in CS6 flaw!

This is bad news. When I select a font onscreen and open the character palette, then click on the font drop down, it is not automatically bringing up the selected font...meaning, it just begins at the very top of the list with 'A'. So...if it is something in the Helvetica family that I want to change to, say, Helvetica Neue, or what have you, I need to scroll all the way down my enormous font list over & over again. God forbid it be a font under 'T'.
Is there any way to correct this issue, or has CS6 just not up to it?!
    Thanks.

It is nothing to do with Number of Recent Fonts to Display set to '0'. As someone else mentioned, perhaps setting this to a very high number may help out a bit.
The problem is when I select my font in the character palette, click the drop down to reveal my entire list of fonts - the list does not auto jump to the font I am currently using.
It brings me up to the very top of the list at 'A', so I have to manually scroll down every time through the entire alphabet.
As you know many font families have completely different fonts to display THIN, SEMIBOLD, or what have you, vs. the different attributes of that family come up in the field below the font name (in the character palette). This is really frustrating as even if I attempt to manually type in the name, many times it won't jump to that font in the list due to shortened / abbreviated name.
It's a real headache and in Illustrator even more so as Illustrator doesn't seem to have the scroll option available. Meaning, you need to click the arrow icon and wait for it to scroll all the way down the list.
Any other ideas or preferences that can be changed?
    Thanks!

  • Illustrator 12.0 --  Fonts will not appear in character palette.

I recently had to reformat my computer, and had to re-install Adobe Illustrator. Ever since fonts will not load in my character palette.
The only way for me to access fonts is by going to type >> font at the top of the program. I've tried re-installing Illustrator, but have had no luck.
Any ideas on how to correct this problem? It didn't exist before, and fonts load correctly in Photoshop.

    Jen,
    You may try to
Move the folder. Sometimes the preferences are wrong from the beginning.

  • Character palette window malfunction

In trying to sort out a problem I was having with non-English fonts, I went to the Help Viewer and thought I had a lead with the Special Characters selection under the Edit menu. I opened the Special Characters window and found a variety of non-English fonts (I was specially interested in Hebrew). The instructions said to open an application and select the charachter. I opened Textedit and made an attempt which did not work that I could tell. What it did do, was cause the Character Palette window to malfunction. It flashes partially open on an irregular but frequent basis, perhaps connected to program activity. The window appears in the middle of the screen, it is titled and has the litlle rotating activity icon in the middle but is blank otherwise. It remains for less than a second and then disappears. When I look at it with the Console utility, it gives this sort of message:

    I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.8

    Hi sonopan
    Fully understand the frustration
    Open "Activity Monitor" in /Applications/Utilities/
On the panel you will see all of the programs in memory
scroll down and one click on "ChaPaletteServer" it will highlight
click on "Quit Process" at the top of the screen
    that should clear it
To use another language I select it in System Preferences > International > Input Menu
enable "Character Palette" and "Keyboard Viewer"
at the bottom of the pane
enable "Allow a different input source for each document"
and "Show input menu in menu bar"
    Open Textedit
click on the flag icon on the menu bar
    select "Show keyboard viewer"
    select the language
and away you go - the keyboard viewer shows the characters as available on your keyboard
You can access the International Prefs from the icon as well so if you want to deselect a language you can but change back to English (if that's you normal language) before doing so

  • Keyboard, power, and character palette issues

I have a brand new macbook (about 3 weeks old) that came with leopard pre-installed. I am continually having problems with the laptop not recovering from sleep mode and the keyboard will spontaneously stop working periodically. As well, the special character palette does not work - it doesn't come up at all! I tried resetting my PRAM to resolve the power/keyboard issues to no avail, and I have heard that an os reinstall may resolve the character palette issues, but am wary. Has anyone successfully resolved these issues?

  • Why is Character Palette flashing on & off on my screen?

When working in Pages, suddenly the Character Palette became non-functioning...I saved my document, then closed the program, but the non-functioning Character Palette continued to show. I then tried a re-boot-shut down the computer & restarted it. It then froze once it opened & didn't show any docking station or other menu items---rebooting 3 times continued this freeze. I then shut down, unplugged & restarted. This time the docking station & everything else showed up, but for some reason the Character Palette flashed on & off-a completely blank window with just the title...it's still flashing on & off randomly! Do I attempt a reboot again? What's the bug? I'm frustrated!!

    Hello Jerrene,
welcome to the Pages Discussions. This problem was mentioned in some threads and this is what helped before:
Try to delete the "com.apple.CharPaletteCache.plist" at "<YourHDName>/Users/<YourAccount>/Library/Caches/"? And the "com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist" at "<YourHDName>/Users/<YourAccount>/Library/Preferences".

  • Character palette fails to insert characters

I have just discovered in Mavericks that the character palette fails to insert characters (such as the Portuguese ó)  in Pages and other applications.
    Anyone else having this difficulty?

    Thank you Tom Gewecke,
It works fine in this program. ♁☉♫㊭ᚖ
I can drag and drop into this no problem, see?
So, as for Word, it now works.
Word was being funky, so I FORCE QUIT out of Word, and restarted, and now I am able to drag into a Word Document.
Am embarrassed that I Didn't do that before writing in.
I don't have any idea why it wasn't working for me at all before.
    Hopefully it won't happen again.
Thank you for getting back to me though, I truly appreciate it!

  • Issues in the character palette

Since updating InDesign CC to the most recent version (8 Jan 2014)  I've noticed some intermittant bad behaviour in the character palette.
Changing a font family works fine, but subsequent changes made using the weight/style dropdown don't apply to the selected text frame.
Using the weight/style dropdown in the glyph palette still works, and is a good enough temporary work around.
The issue is only in this version of ID (my colleague's ID6 works fine), and hasn't yet occurred in any other CC applications I've tried.
The issue went away when I trashed preferences and saved settings files (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/526990) a few hours ago, but has since recurred.
My question: Should I stop syncing my user settings as well and start completely afresh?
    Cheers
    Anthony

    Hi,
The issue went away when I trashed preferences and saved settings files (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/526990), but has since recurred occasionally. At this moment, I’ve been seeing no problems and I’m also using the most recent update.

  • Plist question (loginwindow, HIToolbox, character palette)

    Hi,
There was a problem with the special character palette from Textedit recurring at login and logout on my pb. It happened after I quit Textedit without closing the palette first (I would think it should close automatically since it is part of the Textedit app?), leaving the palette still active when I logout.
I found posters who had same prob in the forum and followed the general advice of deleting comp.apple.loginwindow.plist, and it seemed to work. But today it happens again and deleting the loginwindow plist has no effect. Checked the content of the plist - it does not contain any suspicious item like last time. Search the forum again for answers. People with similar problems w/ char palette (don't know from Textedit or international language menu) popping out when it is not wanted would trash the HIToolbox.plist and/or the CharPalette plist. So I did that too, and the TextEdit plist also (why not since the OS will generate new plists & I don't have significant pref to preserve).
This method is working again. At least for now. But through this exercise I discovered I know so little about these xml files. One of the files I deleted is
    com.apple.HIToolbox.000a95b1a702.plist
Does anyone know what this item is?

nice. palette popped open w/default everything, soon as i deleted it. it's still sitting in the trash.
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist
I was afraid to 'cause it said 'server.'
    Thank you Tom!

  • Show Nested Character Styles in Character Palette

When a character style is nested in a paragraph style it would be nice if the Character palette highlighted the character style used when text with that nested paragraph/character style is selected.
It would also be nice if when a character style used in a nested style is changed on the page (and not through the character style) if then the "Redefine Style" option from the Character palette fly-out menu could be used to redefine the style.

I posted this in another thread before I discovered this one:
I just upgraded to Pages 5.
I opened a document that I'd been working on in the previous version of Pages. It has several styles, incuding a bulleted list style called "main bullet".
I attempted to apply that style to a section of text, and while it did indent the text properly, it did not add bullets. (Also, in the Style panel a bullet does not appear next to the "main bullet" style as it does in Pages 4. This was my first clue that something was wrong.)
So I went back in the text to a bulleted list that uses the "main bullet" style. I selected the text, then went to the Style panel and chose "main bullet" > update style. This did not seem to help. The "main bullet" style still has no bullet next to it in the Style panel, and when I tried again to apply it to some text, the bullet doesn't appear.
I decided to try a different style, in this case "body". I went to a section that has the "main bullet" style, selected it, and applied "body". The indentation changed, but it did not remove the bullet as it was supposed to.
Is this a bug, or do styles work differently in Pages 5?
It appears that styles do not include formatting like bullets, which, if true, is a huge problem.
I was also upset to learn that once I've opened a document in Pages 5, I can no longer open it in Pages 4. So I'm essentially stuck with Pages 5 whether I like it or not.
    Is anyone else noticing this?

  • Character Palette Not Working

I have the options in my International - Input Menu to show the character palette in the menubar. However, when I click on it nothing happens. I have tried all the suggestions I have found on these forums to make it appear, but nothing has worked. (Which has resulted in no longer having a .plist item for the palette, or any of the items in Library > Caches).
It almost seems like I no longer have a character palette to make appear anyway. But then why would I still have the option for it in the Input Menu?
If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.

    alethe wrote:
Would it matter if the character palette shows up in the Components of the system (System/Library/Components), but not under my admin user (user/Library/Components)?
I don't know. There's no Components directory in my home Library and the one in the root-level library is empty, whereas /System/Library/Components/ is full.
If you want to resolve the conflict/corruption in the original admin account, you'll have to do something like this:
While logged into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • 10.4.9 broke Character Palette?

Ever since the latest tiger update, my character palette keeps crashing-anybody else having this problem? Also, it's creating a crash report in console, but i'm not getting the option to submit the crash report to apple- any round-about way of doing this? Console has a Mail button, but not sure where exactly to send it...any help would be appreciated

    It works here.
Send bug reports and enhancement requests to Apple via its Bug Reporter system. Go to https://connect.apple.com/MemberSite and join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Then, go to https://bugreport.apple.com/>, click on the Login to the Apple BugReporter link (using your Apple ID username and password), and file your bug report/enhancement request. You can attach your crash report as part of your submission. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

Message was edited by: Safari crashes

By "open & crashes", do you mean it keeps popping open, and then closes by itself over and over?
    If yes, try this.
If you haven't already, turn off the Character Palette in the System Preferences. Then go to the Preferences folder in your user account and deleted the following two files.
    com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist
    com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
When you turn the palette back on in the System Preferences, it should come up normally.
