Character recognition results in question marks using CuteFTP

I'm have trouble with character recognition when I upload my site to Network Solutions using CuteFTP. Some returns, apostrophies, etc. appear as question marks. I have tried changing the prefernces to Macbinary and to binary without any change. Any suggestions?

For my own education...
Would my solution have worked?
I realize that it's not a true fix. It's a
workaround. However, I'd like to know if it would
have made a difference.
Yes, if you confine your text to pure ascii, without any "smart" punctuation, that may work. However, the templates often have other non-punctuation characters in them already that cause the same kind of problem and removing all of them could be really tedious.

  • Special Character being replaced by Question Marks in Java Mapping

    Hi All,
I need some help on Java Mapping related to special characters.
The problem is that i'm using a Java Mapping to add some information to the XML inside the Interface Mapping. This works fine on our development environment but, in our production environment, it replaces the special character with question marks (eg.: á --> ??).
I'm suspecting of some configuration on the Java Virtual Machine that sets the encoding, but i don't have access to it. Does anyone have any clues about this problem?
    Thanks a lot,

  • Character encoding problem. Question mark in a diamond??

I have gotten this a few times before, but it usually fixes when I switch the encoding. This time absolutely nothing is working. In browsers like Safari, you can see what the black diamond and question mark really is. It's just supposed to be an alt-bullet. If I copy and past it, it turns out fine. I included the url of the site affected. My encoding is currently on Western (ISO-8859-1) and the auto detect is on universal. Anyone have a solution

I assume hat you mean this character: • (•)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullet_%28typography%29
If you see a Question mark in a diamond then that means that the font that Firefox uses doesn't map that character.
It is in a code block with: font-family: courier new,Verdana,Arial;<br />
    You can check those fonts

  • Why are special chars used in Labview filenames supplied by NI? By special chars, I mean ampersands, questions marks, Plus signs, slashes etc. Thats just bad practice in an otherwise good product.

I would like to request that National not use such filenames anymore. Spaces should also be avoided. Just use a format such as MyFileNameWillSuffice.vi.

The LabVIEW coding guidelines warn against using some of those symbols,
but it isn't nearly as limiting as you might want. The reason for this
is that you rarely use VI names on a command line. If you are using
them, then simply "" the path. Feel free to further limit the
characters used in naming your own VIs, but
the names of VIs in vi.lib
and toolkits have already been determined and have in many cases been in
use for five to ten years. They do not cause problems.
Just for the record, LV is also localized into several languages
including Japanese and many of those customers use their native language
and native characters. Again, this doesn't cause problems.

  • Everyone recives Question marks instead of periods !

Many recipients of emails I send using mail, advise me that instead of
periods when I end a sentance they see ? Question marks . This seems to be confined to non make computers.
Does anyone know why this happens and how to stop it . I have been advised other
mac users also suffer this question mark problem.
    Thank you

    Flaxy,
Though I know little of these sorts of things, I did remember reading this:
+Other accented characters may give different results, including question marks or complete absence of the character. The no-break space, which Mail uses frequently in Rich Text, is encoded as A0 in Latin-1 and may appear as a ? in Outlook because A0 is not a character in UTF-8.+

  • Flashing folder with question mark and SSD

I had an issue with my native mbp HDD about a month ago. New ssd (crucial m540 with trim)  worked fine for a month, but after recent wake up it show a screen for several seconds and then a flashing folder screen appeared.
Now I see flashing folder on every boot attempt. Safe mode doesn't work, recovery partition either.
When I try to select boot partition different combination appears: regularly I see only recovery partition, sometimes only system one, and rarely both of them. Anyway every boot attempt results in question mark folder screen.
    The questions are:
    1. Is it possible to recover current state with the recovery partition tools from an external hdd?
    2. What the chance it may be recovered through reformat and clone of the old HDD (e.g. may it be logical OS issue, or is it hardware issue and I need to look for SSD replacement)?
    3. Is it something well known (possibly Mac os + ssd) issue and may it be avoided in the future ?

    Aaaaand.. DONE!
I missed the fact my old "half dead" native hdd freezed in the case, but works properly in the external rack. Now I found it not only worked properly, but way faster than ssd worked (even with usb 2.0 rack interface and no additional power source).
A funny fact: the popular Black Magic Speed Test always show stable 300/500 mbps  for my ssd, while the fact is it worked slower than HDD in the external usb 2.0 rack.
So, I've bought a new SATA cable, and yes, it was the real problem. The old HDD works fine, and the new SSD didn't throw any errors since the cloning process start, it would be ready in several hours but I believe no unexpected issues would appear.

  • Safari won't open. Firefox disappeared, only question mark. Mail doesn't have content. Time Machine won't turn on because sparse bundle is in use. Please help.

I had this issue about a month in a half ago and it was fixed by a local technician. I no longer have access to him and I really need some help. The issues are as follows:
    Safari will not open.
Firefox disappeared. No icon, just a question mark in it's place.
When I open mail it shows I have new messages but the content is blank.
Time Machine cannot turn on because sparse bundle is in use.
New files that were made are no longer available. It's almost as if the computer jumped back in time.

  • Question mark character on keyboard

I am a former PC user that just got a power mac g4 as a gift and I have a question: I am getting incorrect characters when i type..I cannot get the question mark character..Where can i find the basic character commands..Does it have to do with type settings.
    Help please!
Power mac g4   Mac OS X (10.3.2)   incorrect text characters

Open the International pane of System Preferences and click on the Input Menu tab. When this tab is open, select the correct keyboard layout from the list of layouts. If you're using Canadian English on a pre-Tiger system, you need to use the U.S. layout, or install the Canadian English layout into your /Library/Keyboard Layouts/ folder. If multiple layouts are checked, choose to show the Input Menu in the menu bar, and choose the correct layout from that menu.

I'm using a macbook pro, running snow leopard. Yesterday I got around to emptying my trash for the first time in quite awhile and was surprised by how much there seemed to be in there. Immediately after a question mark symbol appeared on all my hard disk folders. If I click on these question marks I get a message saying ' the item can't be found'.

Not sure where these hard disk folders are located that you are referring to?  Finder, Finder tool bar, Finder side bar, Desktop, Dock?
More then likely they are  an alias that not longer point to the orginals,  thus the question mark.
I would reboot.  Delete icons if an alias and just recreate by dragging from the source. Try right click (control) click to remove.

Where is your Calculator application located? Before you can put it into the Dock you need to remove the Question Mark. Select it with the mouse and drag it out of the until it "poofs" away. Now locate Calculator and drag its icon into the Dock.

    Which iBook do you have?

Which version of the OS is installed, and which version are you trying to install?
You could try starting up with Startup Manager and see if it will allow you to select the OS X install disc as the startup disk. If so, maybe you can proceed from there. I would recommend repairing the hard drive first since you are evidently having a bit of a problem with it.

  • Export arabic character into csv file turns into question mark in sql dev

    Hi,
I am trying to export a table's output that contains some arabic and english mixed data, when I try to export it in csv, all the arabic characters change into question mark (?) but the same export is working fine on .xls or .xlsx.
Since we have to export a huge data and csv is much faster thar .xls, kindly let me know why it is happening and what is the solution for this.
Well, we are on Oracle 11gR2 and Sql Dev is 3.1
Appreciate your time and experience sharing.
    Regards.

    Hi,
Since you say it works for xls but not csv, and the only applicable preference setting ( Tools|Preferences|Database|Utilities|Export|Encoding ) should apply to all export formats, I would imagine this is a bug. Especially if the encoding specified in Preferences is consistent with the client OS settings. I was not able to find any prior bug logged against the Export utility for this issue.
I logged a bug for this:
Bug 13993410 - FORUM: ARABIC CHARACTER ENCODING RESPECTED FOR XLS BUT NOT CSV
