Character return leading question

Hi there! Forgive me if this has been answered peviously but i can't seem to find a thread with the answer i was looking for. I won't go into the specifics, as i think the question should be enough!
Is there a way of stopping InDesign creating larger leading when i choose to press "enter" (or "return") at the end of a line rather than letting the text just automatically flow over onto the next line?! I have tried selecting the whole paragraph and setting the leading that way but that doesn't work. I have viewed the invisible characters and made sure all the leading is set the same...but if i press enter (return), it always puts a larger leading gap than if i was to just let the text continue.

Ah ok, so it would seem my keeping the question simple tactic isn't working. To further explain in that case....
Here are the ins and outs of everything:
I had been given a document created in Quark which needed to be converted to InDesign. I did the conversion successfully . I am having to re-create all the tables correctly as in Quark it wasnt really tables, just a series of lines with tabbed text (i know, nightmare!).
The paragraph and character styles seem to have all copied over ok, and i can't see anything set up that would be creating the problem.
Here is the best way to describe the problem:
I have a cell in a table in which the text reads "Pallet Product Code". I need "pallet" to be on the top line, and "product code" to be (in the same cell) underneath it. The width of the cell means it automatically lays itself out as "palllet product" with "code" underneath. So i go to in front of the word "product" and i press enter. Doing so creates a larger leading gap between the two lines than when it was just left alone. So if i opt for just putting in a load of spaces to shove the word "product" over onto the next line it all looks fine, but if i press enter - doom! Well, not doom, just bigger leading...i guess i could just deal with it or reduce the leading lower again to make it look right...but i like to do things properly.
If i quadrouple click the leading is all set to the same value in the cell. I'm thinking this should be something really simply to sort out and i must be missing something silly....but here's hoping!
P.S I am using CS3, on Mac os x 10.5.8

everything works fine, except the "\n" doesn't really give me a character return, ie. i want the file to start on a new line after printing lines.get(k). but it doesn't.
what should i put in the place of \n?

yea, i load the saved file into notepad, and all i see is something like || (2 little bars) instead of a return, and the next word continues on the same line instead of going to the next line

Remediate to content slide; return to question; then continue on - using Captivate 8

Using Captivate 8, I’m trying to remediate from a Knowledge Check question slide back to a content slide, then back to the KC question to try again, and then continue on from there. On my first instance, this works fine. However, the problems began on the second instance and continue on each instance thereafter. The settings on the KC question slides are all the same with the exception of which slide each jumps to for remediation. I don't understand why it works the first time, but doesn’t work after that. On the second instance the question jumps back to the content slide, but then skips any subsequent slides.   Anyone had a similar experience? Know of a workaround or what I might be doing wrong?
FYI, I'm using he E-Learning Uncovered Adobe Captivate 8 book by Elkins, Pinder, and Slade as a reference, and it clearly describes how to do this on page 183, "Remediation back to Content Slides - If students get a question wrong, you can branch back to one or several slides where the content was taught and then return them back to the quiz to retry the question. To add remediation branching: 1) in the last attempt field on the question, set a Jump to Slide action to the first slide with the content. 2) On the last slide with the content, add a return to Quiz action on the slide's next button. On the content slide, the Next button with the Return to Quiz action executes a Continue action under normal circumstances, but returns students to the quiz if that's where they came from."

I've tried contacting Adobe, too, but with no clear resolution yet.  One suggestion they gave me was to put the slide you are remediating back to right before the question slide. However, if you can only remediate back to the slide immediately before the question slide, that limits this functionality severely. My solution has been to remediate to a duplicate, but separate content slide using buttons rather than quiz logic. Cumbersome, but it works.

Values are returned as question marks.

I have set up a UTF-8 database, on my english version of WinXP..
SELECT * FROM NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS;
.. shows this is correct - UTF8
I have set up NLS_LANG variable in windows, to be "American.America.UTF8"
Using SQL*Plus worksheet I can update a row in my database to contain chinese characters. I dont know what the chinese means, but I can copy and paste from another application, and the glyphs looks the same in the source and SQL*Plus worksheet.
I can then select the row ..
SELECT * FROM THETABLE WHERE THECOLUMN = '{CHINESECHARS}';
The correct row is returned, but the column is shown with just question marks, instead of the glyphs I expect.
(This also happens with the web application I am developing which also seems to return qurestion marks. (PHP not JSP))
Can anyone shed any light on this problem as I am completely stuck.

in the right direction.. It's the combination of the NLS_LANG and Active
Code page settings on the client as well as the database characterset. I believe you say the database character set is UTF8. That part should be correct. It's then the client side combo's that do the trick. It's trying differing combo's until he desired results are achieved. Having not worked with Chinese I can
give you an example of what I've experienced...
These are the following steps I performed to enable the client SQL*Plus (command line and GUI) and SQL*Worksheet to display/input the euro currency symbol correctly for example...
1) Search from the top of the registry (regedit) for ALL occurrences of NLS_LANG and make the value AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252.
2) Go to the following registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage\ACP
and change the active code page (ACP) to 1252. If there is an OEMACP entry there change that also to 1252.
3) Reboot the PC
To test .. go to DOS and enter at the prompt..
E:\>chcp
Active code page: 1252
If the above message IS NOT 1252 you must have missed editting the registry entry
explained above. However you can change it for this session by entering
E:\>chcp 1252

To get the UNICODE characters you want insert into the database do the following
E:\>charmap
You will see a display of different characters.
If you click on advanced view at the lower right corner a search screen comes up. Enter UNICODE for the character set, ALL for group by and EURO for the search for and the euro currency symbol will come up. This is one way how the user can enter this character into the app. You can copy the character in this function as you can see and then you can paste it elsewhere. Copy whatever character you want to test with. My test was with the euro currency symbol.

Returning phone question?!

About three weeks ago I got the blackberry classic. After ten days of using the device I decided it wasn't for me and returned it within the 14 day return period and went ahead and got the Note Edge after paying the $35 restocking fee. I'm not completely sold on this phone just yet, but I recall the rep saying, "that once I switch the Blackberry for the Note, that I wouldn't be able to exchange the Note for something else, even if I pay another restocking fee." Pages: On the new version of Pages, I can't select the invisible character "return". I need to copy and past it on "Find and replace". How can I do that? Thanx.

To change all the "-" by — that starts a dialogue on a book, I used to copy and past "Return" + "-" to ensure that all the "-" will not be change. But on the new version of Page if I select the "Return" character, and past it on "Find", the "Space" is appearing. How to select the "Return" character ? hanks for your help.

Select a song. Hit command-I (Mac) or Ctrl-I (Windows). In the pane which opens select the 'Artwork' tab. Drag an image to the space.
Or, select an album: same keystroke. In the pane which opens is a space labelled 'Artwork' - drag an image there.

NI VISA read stops at zero character, returning an 0xBFFF003E error

I’m trying to read some serial data from a UUT using the NI-VISA read function. The data is mostly text but does include some control codes. The first of these appears after the ‘OK’ in the Serial Bytes window on the front panel. More text should follow but for some reason, the read function stops at the first zero character (index 144 in the Byte Array), and returns an 0xBFFF003E (-1073807298) error. I found another thread where someone had a similar problem and I’ve tried the fix for this plus a few other things, but nothing’s worked. If I use Hyperterminal, the entire data block is returned as it should be.
I wondered if this was anything to do with the 7.1 version of Labview I’m using (upgrade is on the cards). The version of NI VISA I’m running is 4.2.

The error code itself is a generic VISA error which often happens with USB to RS-232 interfaces. Does your device connect to the PC through USB as a virtual COMM port? If so what chip and Windows driver is it using?
Also your function somehow looks wrong. The only criteria for the read loop to terminate is if there is an error on the VISA read or the Teststand termination status gets true. Generally if you use VISA Bytes at Serial Port you are almost always doing something wrong! That function does absolutely not synchronize with anything in your data. You will read whatever is there at that moment and that could be a partial message, no bytes at all (LabVIEW is typically many times faster than any serial device even if it is super high speed), or multiple messages.

Missing return statement question

In your first snippet, the compiler has no guarantee that the for loop will be executed at all. That leaves only one return inside an if condition which again it has no guarantee that it will ever be reached(the if test may fail). This leads the compiler to the conclusion that your method may never return anything at all. Yet it's definition says that it must return a value.

CS3 Leading Question

Hey everyone,
I'm new here, and have a quick question. Any help will be really appreciated.
I was given an exercise book by a publishing house to do some corrections in.
The book was designed by another designer they had a falling out with.
The other designer has used a leading effect i'm not familiar with. I'm posting a screenshot:
As you can see the leading for all the text is 13.5pt, but paragraph 1.13 and 1.14 have a bigger gap between them than the regular lines of text.
How is this achieved?

It should be defined as part of the paragraph style, but since the designer didn't seem to know how to set a left indent on a paragraph and started things with tabs, it may not be. There's a section in the style definition dialog called Indents and Spacing where you would do it. It's also possible that instead of space before for the numbered paragraph, space AFTER was applied to the paragraphs with the arrow bullet. Fields for space before and after are accessible in both the Paragraph and Contol panels, so if you put the cursor in a paragaph you should be able to see what is applied (but not whether it is local formatting or part of the style). You'll need to do some looking.
I would also re-define the styles, myself, so there are proper left indents instead of leading tabs (and get rid of the leading tabs using find/change) and set a next style cycle for the three styles involved in that list, so that if you type in new entries they will automatically rotate through the three styles for each entry.

Basic leading questions

1. I created a text area box in CS6 at 18pt and it seems to have automatically set the leading to 21.6. Does AI set the leading for all text automatically based on the font size and the font selected? Does the font designer set this so that the leading is determined by him/her?
2. At what point do you generally want to adjust the leading? The art board on the left is set to 21.6 and the one on the right is set to 25. It creates a bit more breathing room/white space. How do you know when you are setting it too high? Are there any basic guidelines for this?

AI and most other apps automatically set leading to 120% the type size.
2. At what point do you generally want to adjust the leading?
At what point do I do that? Always. I never use auto-leading. Auto leading is based on the largest character in the line. So suppose for some reason you increase the size of one character or one word in a paragraph. The baseline of that whole line shifts. Amateurish.
If the document has any significant amount of body text, I "design on the leading grid." (Meaning there is a vertical grid which underlies the whole page and which corresponds to the leading of the body text. Almost all elements align to it, and are sized to increments of it. All paragraph styles are defined to conform to increments of it. Baselines of columns align across columns.) This is why InDesign, for example, has a Leading Grid feature separate from the ruler grid. It's also why InDesign's horizontal and vertical ruler grids are independent.
Auto leading should not be the default. Solid leading (same as type size) should.

Skipping and returning to questions in Captivate 5

Hi folks,
Is there any way, in Captivate 5, to allow users to skip quiz questions, but automatically return to skipped questions at the end of the quiz, before the results page comes up?
I need to include a required quiz in a module, but let the users skip questions and come back to them later. I know that checking "Allow Backward Movement" allows the user to go back and answer skipped questions. But I'm trying to see if there's a way to get Captivate to automatically do this, rather than require the user to remember how many and which questions they skipped, and to have to go back to them.

You could probably do this with Advanced Actions, trying to track the questions that have or have not been answered. But it would be somewhat complex.
I don't know of any simple way to do it in Cp.

DAQmxReadDigitalU32 returned data question

I have 4 NI-6511 (64 bit digital in) boards installed in a PC.
I've written code (Delphi) which does the following (the prefix DAQmx stripped from the orignal DLL function calls):
enumerate installed boards (GetSysDevNames)
Create a Task for each installed board (CreateTask)
Create 2 Channels for each task (CreateDIChan - Channels are 'Dev#/port0_32' & 'Dev#/port4_32')
Start each task (StartTask)
Read data 1 sample/channel specified (ReadDigitalU32)
All are successful with the following exception:
ReadDigitalU32 returns only the first channel in the task. These channels are 32 bits wide, so is there a limitation that I can only read 32 bits worth of data with this function call ?
I expected to see DataArray[0] contain the data for Dev1/port0_32 and DataArray[1] the data for Dev1/port4_32, but this was not the case. I then expanded the array to be a multidimensional one (UINT32 ArrayData[2,100]) but this also did not produce the desired results. Any suggestions ?
Other Question:
I currently use a system timer to generate the reads every 70ms or so. Is there a call I can use with the 6511 board that creates a continuous read task ? I tried CfgHandshakingTimng, but DAQmx_Val_ContSamps is not defined, and trying DAQmx_Val_SampleContinuous (or whatever it's defined as in DAQmx.TLB) produces a GPF.

Hi Salemation,
You can consider using the function: DAQmxReadDigitalLines to read from the individual lines.
The PXI-6511 supports unstrobed digital input only (software timed), hence your current method of using the timer is the way to go.

Leading question - ID2

I'm a little rusty on ID and have a quick question. Is it possible to have different leading settings for paragraph breaks than line breaks? For example:
The leading between this line and the paragraph below is say 18pt
...and the leading for the lines in this paragraph
is different say 14pt
Basically I want to be able to have a gap between paragraph headings without the need for a whole extra line, and without having to go and edit the leading for each new heading. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check the options for "Space Before" or "Space After" in the Paragraph Palette. May have to turn on 'More Options' in the palette menu to see them.

PS. did you mean ID2, or IDCS2 (ID4)? Answer is the same either way, but CS2 has the Control Palette, which also can be used to edit the Space Before/After.
That setting is also available in the Paragraph Styles, if you use them.

Function Body Returning Query - Questioning my Approach

I have some concerns that I am not using this in the optimal manner.
Essentially I have all my queries in a package body and I call each report as follows:

and concatenate the string.
This results in a valid sql string being returned to the database , however if I pass a different value
then I will get a different sql string.
I would rather be able to use bind variables using this approach if at all possible.
So is this the correct approach is there a better approach?

Current project makes extensive use of packages containing Function Body Returning Query report sources to dynamically build queries from SQL modules. However, the queries generated by any function are all used within one page. This enables page item bind variable references to be fixed within the SQL:

The tutorial says no code is allowed between try and catch blocks, but one of the examples given has a return statement between try and catch blocks.
