Character Styles dialog box suddenly blank - cannot fix

Things were going funky (InDesign ignored all standard keyboard commands unless I clicked first into note pad), so I stopped, shut down and restarted the entire computer. Upon reload, my file came up, however, the character styles dialog box was blank (options to add and import etc. are still visible in the breakout to the right, but nothing appears in the box itself now matter the document).
Is there a prefs file that I can delete to restore this (much like the old aiprefs?) or is this going to require an entire uninstall of the design suite and reinstall?
Has anyone else seen this?  Anyway to fix this?
EDIT: Oops here's my set up:
OS: Vista
HP Pavillion
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to avoid a reinstall if possible.

OK got it... in case anyone else needs to know:
Go to: [username] > Application Data > Adobe > InDesign > Version X (your version)
Drag that entire Version 4.0 folder to your desktop and then start InDesign again. It will recreate the entire Version 4.0 folder and its myriad files. I say “drag it to the desktop” instead of deleting it because you might have finely-tuned workspaces or long lists of AutoCorrect entries that you’d like to hang on to.
Found it on the InDesign Secrets blog.

    Upon opening LR I receive a "Server Busy" dialoge box: "This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'Switch To' to activate the busy program and correct the problem." I have no other programs open and when I wait a bit it clears with the 'retry' button. Happened following a recent update. I'd really like this to go away - any ideas?

    For me this happens when I have Zenfolio or Facebook open in Google Chrome, even if Google Chrome is not active.  If you use Chrome, when the error shows up open Chrome and close each one of the tabs and click on the retry in Lightroom.  Also happens if Internet explorer is running with either of these two programs.

  • Blank Sheet at beginning and between every printed page; Separator Page dialog box is blank.

    I followed directions of another blog and when I got to the Separator Page dialog box, it said to "delete all templates listed in the Separator Page box", but mine was blank.  If I click on the browse button, I do find pcl,sep; pscript.sep; sysprint.sep; and sysprtj.sep files.  Do I delete these sep files?  I have a HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One Printer and am using Windows 7 (had same problem with VISTA).

    I had this issue using FF 5.0, I fixed it by doing the following :
    # Go to firefox button, select options, options.
    # Find all the applications that are listed as Adobe
    # Change the action from 'Use Adobe Reader (in FireFox)' to 'Use Adobe Reader'

  • Layer Style Dialog Box

    As a newbie I am working my way through CS5 Classroom in a Book.
    One lesson calls for setting Invert on when selecting Satin and the illustration shows the Invers box alongside the contour in the Layer Style box but when I launch this I only see the anti-aliased option.
    Why am I not seeing the Invert option?
    All help greatly appreciated.

    A common mistake with the Layer Style dialog is that you can check an effect on, but still be viewing the settings for another effect.
    Look carefully at the title near the top of the dialog that's in the line that goes around the settings.
    Make sure you click on the NAME of the effect along the left side to highlight it and show the settings for a particular effect.

  • Some extension dialog boxes are blank

    When I press on some extension buttons (for example Ghostery, Self-Destructing Cookies) on top bar, or on menu bar, to open their dialog boxes, those boxes opens but looks like white blank boxes. They worked before, but now they are empty.
    Here an example: http://c2n.me/jqqe35.jpg

  • After updating firefox (on MAC), everytime I start Firefox there is an open installation dialog box - which I cannot figure out how to delete.

    I have used Firefox without problem, on my Mac, for several years. I recently updated to v22.0. Now every time I open Firefox, there is a dialog box (marked "Firefox , 2 items") that appears, with the Firefox icon, and arrow pointing right, and a folder icon. It looks like I am asked to install Firefox again. I've done this several times, but the dialog box never disappears. I have right-clicked, and hit "eject firefox only." The dialog disappears, but then reappears the next time I open Firefox. Firefox seems to be functioning normally, but this installation glitch is annoying. How can I resolve this?

    More info, in case it helps anyone else with this problem:
    I got a PM from waycool007 on 10/12/13 which said,
    Hi Alice -
    Thanks for trying to help me - regarding the question regarding the firefox dialog box.
    I am opening firefox from the icon on my dock. It then opens the annoying installation/dialog box.
    If I open firefox from the applications folder, it actually opens properly.
    ... to which I answered,
    You need to close Firefox if open and then delete the Firefox icon that is in the dock. You can then start Firefox from the applications folder and, when the new Firefox icon shows up in the dock, use the control click option to keep it there.
    Let me know if this fixes it.
    I just got this reply:
    I followed your instructions, and Firefox is now working normally. This has been bugging me for at least two months, and you solved it in a minute. Wow. Thanks!

  • SharePoint 2013 Pop-Up Dialog Boxes are Blank

    Hi all,
    I'm having a weird issue where any "dialog" pop-up window appears completely blank, but has the word "Dialog" in the top left hand corner of the box. Or, I'll just get the "Working on it" message for a couple minutes, and the
    box goes to a blank rectangle shape (no content whatsoever inside of it).
    This applies to all lists or libraries that have the "Launch forms in a dialog" option to YES or any that use that behavior by default (i.e. calendar or doc library upload dialog).
    Any idea what could be causing this?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Is the master page is customized. Please inspect using developer tool any css class preventing to appear. just a quick thought.
    Thanks!
    Hello!
    In this case, the sites are using the default master page. However, one thing to note is these are sites that were migrated from a different SharePoint 2013 server farm. I'm not sure if that matters or not.

  • How do I get back to the newest file dialog box style in LabVIEW?

    I have LabVIEW 7.1 and LabVIEW 6.0.2 installed on the same machine.  When I doubleclick a .vi file it tries to open in LV602.  Of course, if it is a LV71 VI I get an error and it doesn't open.  Then I run LV71 and load the desired VI--in this case by using the Open arrow to find it in the "recently opened" list.  Now, I've made this mistake before, especially when I don't remember whether I used LV602 or LV71 to create the VI, and nothing bad has happened.
    But this time something undesirable did happen:  all Open File dialog boxes are of the old funky style.  How do I get the file dialog boxes back that I've grown used to seeing when I use LV71?
    CLUES:
    1.  I get the old style dialog box even when I try to open a VI--not just when a running VI invokes it.
    2.  The built version of the VI brings up the correct, new style, file dialog box--unlike the development environment.
    I haven't found any settings in the options area that would appear to affect the file dialog box style.  Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

  • [CS3 JS] Correcting a Character Style Anomaly

    It used to be that you could define a character style to merely colour the text and give it an underline (e.g. for Hyperlinks) or just superscript the text (for Reference citations). When such styles, which do not call for a particular font or font size, are placed into InDesign CS, the styled text would take on the font and font size of the underlying paragraph style. However, after placing a Word .doc with these styles into a CS2 template, the font and font size becomes Times New Roman and 10 pt. The solution was to save an .rtf file and re-import the text. Now, in CS3 this work-around doesnt quite work: the font is okay, but the font size reverts to that default size of 10 pt.
    So, I would like a script that finds all occurrences of two specific character styles (Hyperlink and bibref) and then corrects the font size of the found text to that of the underlying paragraph style. These styles can appear anywhere within a document, including in tables. I have trawled through this forum and found enough to be able to search for the character styles, but I cannot fathom how to apply the font size of the underlying paragraph style. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    By the way, re-applying the character styles doesnt work because the character styles dont define the font size; also clearing the overrides on the paragraph style while the text is selected isnt a viable solution, because other local formatting (i.e. italic) would be lost.

    Hi Peter
    Thank you very much for your quick response. I tried your script and it did as you intended by clearing the Font, Font Style and Point Size in the character style, but unfortunately it did not correct the problem of the style becoming some default style and size (Times New Roman 10 pt) when placed into ID.
    In fact, I had already set up the 'bibref' and 'Hyperlink' character styles with these fields blanked out. Also, I made Adobe aware of this bug when CS2 came out and they warned me that CS3 wouldn't fix the problem; but I didn't realize that CS3 would be worse than CS2 so that using an rtf file wouldn't fix things.
    So, I am left with my initial query: is it possible to write a script to search for the character styles in question and apply the font size of the underlying paragraph style?
    Thanks a lot for any help you can give.

  • Only part of my character style will apply when used in a numbering format.

    I have created a NOTE: format. I used a numbering format to create it, as follows in the Bullets and Number section of the paragraph styles dialog box:
    List Type: Numbers
    Format: None
    Number:   NOTE:^t
    Character Style: My Special Character Style
    And here is my character style:
    Underline: ON
    Weight: 15 pt
    Offset: -4
    Color: Black
    Tint: 20%
    And here is the problem:
    The underline does not show up when the character style is used from within the Bullets and Numbering section of the paragraph style. I can apply the character style to plain old text and t will work fine. But that portion of the character style will not show up when it is referenced from the Bullets and Numbering screen. Interestingly enough, strikethrough has the same problem. The rest of the attributes of my character style (font, color, etc) work fine. But the underline won't apply.
    Any ideas as to why?

    I believe this is a known bug; underlines don't work in this situation, though other text attributes, like bold, color, italic, do.

  • Graphics display problems (dialog boxes) Lenovo G50 AMD A6 Win 8.1

    Graphics display problems Lenovo G50 AMD A6 Win 8.1 Greetings to all. After having spent a number of days trying to find a solution to a display problem, I turn to this forum for help. I own a Lenovo G50 AMD A6 Win 8.1 ever since November 2014, and have had display problems ever since the first day, be it while using internet (Firefox or Explorer) or various software (Text editors, etc.). Many dialog boxes, including colour settings and controls (open, close etc.) either have an inappropriate appearance or even do not appear at all! I manage to "click" on the right places using memory: most areas are INVISIBLE! Another example would be that I do not see any backround colour or image on most webpages such as this one).  Some suggestions included checking for graphics updates (but the drivers used were already up-to-date).  I 'd be most obliged for any new suggestions. Thank you very much. George

    Greetings to all, I finally decided to express my utmost discontent with- the Lenovo G50-45 I bought before Christmas 2014,- the summary response with inappropriate links that I received after exposing  my problem- the fact that I tried to dowload the following graphics driver  (Beema) AMD Driver (VGA, HDAudio, SATA) for Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

  • I would like Adobe to utilize the non-legacy save/open Windows 7 dialog box

    So I downloaded the trial for CS5.5 Master Suite and found that the open/save dialog box is the same thing from CS5.  This is a huge disappointment.
    Reason being is explained right here: http://www.sanneblad.com/2010/06/18/customizing-the-open-and-save-dialogs-in-adobe-cs5-for -windows/
    Common File Dialog is being used still by CS5 and CS5.5 which is outdated and legacy.
    [Starting with Windows Vista, the Open and Save As common dialog boxes have been superseded by the Common Item Dialog. We recommended that you use the Common Item Dialog API instead of these dialog boxes from the Common Dialog Box Library.]
    The Open dialog box lets the user specify the drive,  directory, and the name of a file or set of files to open. You create  and display an Open dialog box by initializing an OPENFILENAME structure and passing the structure to the GetOpenFileName function.
    The Save As dialog box lets the user specify the drive, directory, and name of a file to save. You create and display a Save As dialog box by initializing an OPENFILENAME structure and passing the structure to the GetSaveFileName function.
    Explorer-style Open and Save As dialog boxes provide user-interface features that are similar to the  Windows Explorer. However, the system continues to support old-style Open and Save As dialog boxes for applications that must be consistent with the old-style user interface.
    In addition to the difference in appearance, the Explorer-style and  old-style dialog boxes differ in their use of custom templates and hook  procedures for customizing the dialog boxes. However, the Explorer-style  and old-style dialog boxes have the same behavior for most basic  operations, such as specifying a file name filter, validating the user's  input, and getting the file name specified by the user. For more  information about the Explorer-style and old-style dialog boxes, see Open and Save As Dialog Box Customization.
    The following illustration shows a typical Explorer-style Open dialog box.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb776913%28v=VS.85%29.aspx
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms646960%28VS.85%29.aspx
    It appears it would be a simple retooling of the code in order for this to work.  I truly hope that Windows 8 will force all software developers to utilize the new Common Item Dialog API.

    We've been trying to - but we still have to support XP and Vista.
    It appears it would be a simple retooling of the code in order for this to work.
    Um, no, not that simple.

  • [JS][CS3] Simple dialog box problem

    Hi
    I am wanting to make my script do 1 of 2 things depending on the result of a dialog box.  I cannot seem to register the users response.  Here is the code:
    var myDialog = new Window('dialog', 'Confirm Changes');
    myDialog.frameLocation = [600,400];

    myPanel= myDialog.add('panel', [10,10,580,240], 'Select the action you wish to use');
    //Adding Buttons
    myUseExistingTextButton = myPanel.add('button', [48,190,75,25], 'Use Existing Text',{name:'select'});

    myCancelButton = myPanel.add('button', [480,190,75,25], 'Cancel',{name:'select'});

    myNewTextWindow = myDialog.add("edittext",[250,40,460,200],"New Text");
    myResult = myDialog.show();
    if(myResult == true)

                        alert("Old was selected");
         if (myResult == 1)
                        alert("New was selected");
    which gives the following result:
    All I want to do is use the selected button do do the next part of my script depending on the text selected.
    I will keep on looking, and di-secting other scripts, but any help here would be nice.

  • Calendar dialog box

    Hi there!
    I'm trying to implement a dialog box where the user can insert start and stop date (and, eventually, time) for building a report in semi-automatic way. So, the dialog box has to pass data to the calling script.
    I was able to insert the ActiveX control MSCAL.Calendar.7 in the dialog box, but I cannot find the way of passing any properties (such as value, year, nor day) to the calling script.
    The help topic "Transferring User Dialog Box Entries to DIAdem" doesn't reference to the ActiveX control and I can't find examples about that. Any ideas?
    Thank you!
    Andrea

    Hello Andrea!
    You have to set the ActiveX properties in your dialog initialization code. You can access them with the syntax <controlname>.X.<propertyname> with '<controlname>' the name of the SUD control and '<propertyname>' the name of the AxtiveX property.
    Examples:
    MyDateTimePicker.X.Value = now
    MyDateTimePicker.X.Value = R1
    To use ActiveX controls can be verry nice but sometimes also verry frustrating because you have to be shure that they are installed on every client!

  • No New/templates dialog box?

    I have a new copy of DWCS4. When I open it, the New/Templates dialog box is blank...or better said just a white rectangle. Adobe support implies that I should reinstall....anything else?
    Thanks!!

    Hi
    I spent quite some time on thoroughly uninstalling, cleaning (with succesful log) en new installing Premiere Pro CC
    unfortunately the result was the same: no window showed up for keyboard shortcuts.
    I tried it before syncing to the cloud
    In other applications (Prelude,Audition,media encoder) this works ok.
    I was a bit lost here.
    What I then did was open a project I was working on from a travel-SSD (I use Sata cradles on both ends) on the other computer system, edited my keyboard shortcus en synced my settings up to the cloud.
    After that I took the project to the problem computer, opened it and immediatly synced my settings down from the cloud.
    After that the shortcut window showed up and it seems to come up every time I open or start a new project.
    Seems like the hard way, but eventually the result counts.
    Thanks,
    Ron
