Character Styles lost when reopening a document

Having set Character Styles as usual (in this case with green type), when I reopened the same document all the type to which I had previously applied styles all reverted to black. When I checked the Character Styles list the green was as exactly as I had specified it, but it nevertheless displayed as black in the document.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks Monika. I think I went through all the steps mentioned in the post you suggested, including loading swatches first. The problem is that I'm working on a map with hundreds of names already positioned – I simply want to change the font and other attributes without having to retype all the names. This is fine until I close the document and reopen it when, annoyingly, most of the names (not all of them, oddly) display in black. Fortunately, each class of name (towns, rivers, etc) are on a different layer, so it's not altogether difficult to reapply styles – just annoying that I should need to do it at all.
From what I've read, this appears to be an ongoing problem. I'm using CC on a Mac, btw.

  • PowerView worksheets lost when reopening Excel documents

    I have a test machine that is a clean installation of Office 2013 for testing PowerView.
    When I create a PowerView worksheet in Excel 2013 and then save the Excel document, the PowerView sheets are not saved. When I reopen the Excel document all the PowerViews have been replaced with images.
    Does this happen to anyone else?
    I haven't found anything in the documentation that says anything about not being able to save PowerViews within Excel documents.

    Yes, it looks like a sheet of paper.
    When you tap that, you have to scroll left or right to go through the sheets. Select the one you want and then tap on it to go into it.

  • TOC format lost when reopening document

    I have just received a replacement Intel Core 2 Duo iMac for my previous Intel iMac. I firewired over all my files and programs to the new machine. I then tried to open a large document which had been created using my own templates on my previous iMac.
    On opening this file the placement of all the text boxes, graphics and pictures has been lost. On investigation I have discovered that the problem is to do with the loss of formatting in the TOC - the style for one of the TOC headings changes to a larger, embolden font, which knocks the TOC onto two pages, which then affects all the other pages. By the end of a 44 page document, it has increased the pagination to 50 pages. The non-text layer objects, as they are 'fixed on page' remain where they were originally, but their interaction with the text layer creates a complete mess. Reducing the TOC back down to one page does not help, as all the graphics then move up with the surrounding text instead of staying put.
    I have spent this afternoon reformatting the whole document from scratch. I then saved my changes, but on reopening as the TOC formatting has changed, then the document is in the same state as it was before.
    Although I have experienced this TOC problem before, it is only since I migrated to this iMac that it has had upset all the formatting of the document. Previously if I reduced the TOC back down to a single page, the text and graphics interacted correctly and there was no additional adjustments to be made.
    Is there any way that I can make the TOC stable so that it does not have such a detrimental affect on a large document?

    You're welcome.  Just to be clear -
    All links in a TEMPLATE file should be one of three kinds -
    1.  Relative to the template file, e.g.,
    <a href="../ (meaning that you must go up one level from the template folder
    to reach the root of the site, hence all other files, since none of them
    should be in the templates folder)
    2.  Relative to the site root, e.g.,
    <a href="/ (meaning that one would begin looking for the linked file at the
    root of the site and follow the pathing from that point)
    3.  Absolute, e.g.,
    <a href="http:// (meaning that the link is to a page external to the site).
    If you see any DOCUMENT RELATIVE LINKS that don't begin with "../" in a Template file, you can be sure that something is wrong.

  • Character '\' is lost when reading a String from a property file.

    Hi all,
    I have encrypted information inside a property file, but when loading properties in my program, the String object used to store the value is changed by the lost of all \ characters
    # EIS password saved in the property file
    password=WPLqQE0DlVF8Sg\=\=
    #Value loaded in my String object
    WPLqQE0DlVF8Sg==
    Why is this happening? I use java.util.Properties java class to store and load my properties, and it is supposed to do it with the same encoding (ISO 8859-1).
    Please, can someone explain me why this happened and how to solve it?
    Best regards.

                * user=    I am a Dummy
                * password=pass=word#is!dumb
          }Notice that the special chars are only in the file, not actually in the props. If you think otherwise, I don't know what to say. The \ is a special character that is used to escape other special chars, including itself. You can't create a string in java containing only one backslash, as java assumes the next char is being escaped. when you create a string in Java with one backslash, you have to have 2 backslashes. If you are storing data in the property file using something other than store, than you need to ensure that you are escaping all special charachters that the store method does

  • When reopening my document to work on it, 2nd page was not there.

    I was working on editing an iPages brochure. When I reopened it a few hours later, the second (back) page had disappeared. All other times I had previously closed and reopened it, both pages had been there.

    We always start to get worried when the poster doesn't know what application they are using.
    When a page disappears in Pages it is due to the text filling it no long extending onto the page.
    Each page in a Word Processing document only exists if it has text on it. If there is no text on it the document contracts to the last page that does.
    My suspicion is that you have hammered away at the spacebar, tab and return keys to position text and objects.
    You probably have images with text wrap on them that pushes text out of the way. Depending on where those images are placed, text can pop back and forth altering the layout, which is why not using accurate type layout is such a bad idea.
    Menu > View > Invisibles/Layout
    …and you will see what is where. Click on the end of your last visible page:
    Menu > Insert > Page Break
    …and your missing page should reappear.

  • Subject line 'space' character is lost when sending mail?

    Hi,
    I'm using JavaMail, and when sending a mail with a subject line that is longer than 62 characters, the last space before the 63rd character becomes a linefeed. This means that when the recipient receives the e-mail, the space in the subject line is actually dropped (becomes a linefeed).
    For example. I send an email with the following subject line: "New User Setup [ITNUS-0005] User Setup Progress Report for: Louise Gans".
    The recipient will receive the following subject: "New User Setup [ITNUS-0005] User Setup Progress Report for: LouiseGans".
    Note the missing space between "Louise Gans". Perhaps someone could test sending out that subject line, and see if they get the same problem?
    Looking at the message source on the recipient client, it shows a line feed / new line where that space is supposed to be.
    Using MS Outlook or GroupWise or another mail client, the subject lines gets sent through perfectly using the same mail server (Groupwise Internet Agent 7.0.3), but using JavaMail to send the mail through that mail server gives me the space problem.
    Can anybody shed some light on why this is happening? I would really appreciate the help.

    The header is being "folded" as described in RFC 2822 section 2.2.3.
    The folding doesn't lose the space if unfolding is done properly.
    Perhaps the recipient mail program isn't handling unfolding properly?
    If so, please report the bug to the owner of that program.
    If you need to work around such a buggy program, you can set the
    System property "mail.mime.foldtext" to "false" to disable all folding
    in JavaMail.

  • Maintaining fill colors in character styles across multiple AI documents

    I'm having a lot of trouble understanding how Adobe Illustrator (CS6) manages character styles imported from different ai documents. If I create all character styles in a single .ai document and only use them in in that document, everything works as expected--colors, fonts, and typography settings are maintained in the character style, and newly added text can be quickly styled with the character style.
    My trouble starts when i want to re-use those character styles in a new .ai document. From the character style menu I use the option to import the character styles from another document, and they import correctly--all of the styles work and style text as expected. But then i save & close the document and re-open it to find that the character style entries are there, but the fills and strokes are all messed up--fonts, sizes, typography settings are maintained, but styles with a blue fill are suddenly filed with black, or some other color.
    So, why is this happening? This happens even if the swatches associated with the character styles are imported to the new document as well. I've read that all character styles are based off of the 'normal' character style. But, i've tried a test making sure that the 'normal' character style was consistent between the two documents and i've still experienced the issue.
    Here's a short video showing the issue i'm experiencing: http://youtu.be/Z-BG7miwib8 (watch at 720p)
    Any insights as to what i'm doing wrong would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Jamier,
    can you please do the following and report what you see?
    1. Open a blank document
    2. Import a character style
    3. Make a text object and apply the style
    4. Cut and paste the text object inside the document
    5. Save the file
    6. Reopen this file
    Is the character style still intact?
    If so, you could take this way as a bumpy workaround (that should not be required at all, of course).

  • Finding MANUALLY applied character styles

    Hi all,
    We're in the process of switching to an XML workflow, and as one of our interim steps we're applying tags to paragraph and character styles in some of our documents. I'm aware of the option to map styles to tags and this should work well for paragraph styles. However, we're looking for a way to only map the character styles that have been manually applied.
    As an example, we have a paragraph style for instructions that has a bold number nested at the beginning of each paragraph. In other places, the same character style may be used to bold a specific word, but it is applied manually. Is it possible to map to tags ONLY the character styles that were applied manually? We do not want tags identifying character styles that were applied via Nested Styles or GREP Styles.
    I am assuming this would take some sort of script, which is why I'm posting in the scripting forum. Does anyone know if this is possible?
    Thanks in advance,
    Matthew

    Another InDesign oddity!
    If you fill a frame full of placeholder text and assign a "Bold" character style to, for example, a Nested Style:1 word, and a GREP style \<\w{4,6}\>, then use regular (or GREP) Find Text to search for the character style, it'll only highlight words that are at the start of the paragraph. Now that is wrong, wrong, wrong, because
    (a) it should not find any of them -- if you click your cursor into one of these bolded words, the Character Style panel says it's [None].
    or
    (b) it should find all of them, not just those that happen to be at the start of a paragraph. (BTW -- it's not the Nested Style it picks up; when using only GREP styles it'll also find words-at-the-start).
    It is funny, if things like this tickle you, that in a script "findText" works exactly the same. However: if you 'found' bold text and then interrogate what character style it has applied, it will only return your "bold" style if it was applied manually.
    See this script -- test with a placeholder text, aforementioned Nested/GREP styles, and a few hand-picked words that you applied "bold" to yourself. It will only report the ones you marked.
    app.findTextPreferences = null;
    app.findTextPreferences.appliedCharacterStyle = "bold";
    list = app.activeDocument.findText();
    r = [];
    while (list.length)
         next = list.pop();
         if (next.appliedCharacterStyle == app.activeDocument.characterStyles.item("bold"))
              r.push (next.contents);
    alert (r.join("\r"));

  • Print Without Hyperlink Character Styles

    Hi,
    I have applied a character style to URLs in my document that look like links so that when I export to pdf, people can click the obvious URL link.  However, the document will also be printed and I do not want the text to have this character style applied to it (or be a hyperlink).  I thought when I exported to PDF and unchecked 'Include Hyperlinks', no hyperlink formatting would be present in the pdf, including character styles applied to hyperlinks, but I cannot seem to print without the character style being applied.
    Is there a way to choose in the print dialog whether I want the character style applied to the text?  Or what is the easiest way to toggle between showing hyperlinks and not showing hyperlinks (including character styles) as I need to switch between print versions and electronic versions of my document?
    Thanks so much!

    Or maybe easier would be to define a second style with attributes, then use find/change to change from one to the other. Easy to go back and forth that way.

  • Show Nested Character Styles in Character Palette

    When a character style is nested in a paragraph style it would be nice if the Character palette highlighted the character style used when text with that nested paragraph/character style is selected.
    It would also be nice if when a character style used in a nested style is changed on the page (and not through the character style) if then the "Redefine Style" option from the Character palette fly-out menu could be used to redefine the style.

    I posted this in another thread before I discovered this one:
    I just upgraded to Pages 5.
    I opened a document that I'd been working on in the previous version of Pages. It has several styles, incuding a bulleted list style called "main bullet".
    I attempted to apply that style to a section of text, and while it did indent the text properly, it did not add bullets. (Also, in the Style panel a bullet does not appear next to the "main bullet" style as it does in Pages 4. This was my first clue that something was wrong.)
    So I went back in the text to a bulleted list that uses the "main bullet" style. I selected the text, then went to the Style panel and chose "main bullet" > update style. This did not seem to help. The "main bullet" style still has no bullet next to it in the Style panel, and when I tried again to apply it to some text, the bullet doesn't appear.
    I decided to try a different style, in this case "body". I went to a section that has the "main bullet" style, selected it, and applied "body". The indentation changed, but it did not remove the bullet as it was supposed to.
    Is this a bug, or do styles work differently in Pages 5?
    It appears that styles do not include formatting like bullets, which, if true, is a huge problem.
    I was also upset to learn that once I've opened a document in Pages 5, I can no longer open it in Pages 4. So I'm essentially stuck with Pages 5 whether I like it or not.
    Is anyone else noticing this?

  • How to apply a Character Style that's already been made in a template document?

    First of all I'd like to thank everyone that helps. I'm a complete beginner at scripting and appreciate all your help.
    I'm basically using GREP expressions to find patterns in a document and apply a Character Style which has already been made. This Character style was not made using script, but just in InDesign when making and setting up the template.
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    //Clear the find/change grep preferences.
    app.findGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.changeGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;

    app.findChangeGrepOptions.includeFootnotes = false;
    app.findChangeGrepOptions.includeHiddenLayers = false;
    app.findChangeGrepOptions.includeLockedLayersForFind = false;
    app.findChangeGrepOptions.includeLockedStoriesForFind = false;

    //Applying formatting changes to put into All Caps, Bold and changing the font size to 12 pt.
    app.changeGrepPreferences.capitalization = Capitalization.allCaps;
    app.changeGrepPreferences.fontStyle = "Bold";
    app.changeGrepPreferences.pointSize = "12";
    myDoc.changeGrep();
    //Clear the find/change preferences after the search.
    app.findGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.changeGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    This is how I currently have it. I will manually define the changes to the text. The problem is, each template uses a different set of fonts and not all of them use Bold e.g. Sabon can use CE Bold.
    I would like to learn how to apply a Character Style and have tried looking around but nothing seems to work.
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    When you install the new iWork version, the old iWork version is kept, so it looks like you are opening your old version.
    To fix this, open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and drag the new Numbers version to the Dock, so you can access to it quickly. Open all documents from this version. I don't recommend you to delete the old Numbers version in case you need it.
    Respecting to the second question, you will get better answers in the Numbers for OS X forum
