Character Styles/Paragraph Styles in Cs5?

I was under the impression that Photoshop CS5 included new Character Style and Paragraph Style panels, but they are not listed under the Windows menu (as was displayed in a tutorial I was watching). I purchased the extended version of the Creative Suite at the Education discount... I doubt they'd remove this feature (if it exists) for students, but who knows.
Anyone else know anything about this?!?

Not quite a "style" palette, but you can set a Tool Preset (upper left of options bar) to a style you want to re-use. I have a couple basic ones in there.
Type a line of text and style it how you want with the text tool. Then, in that Tool Preset dropdown, hit New Tool Preset (this would be a text preset, in the same list as other tool presets). After you have a couple in there, the next time you want a certain text style, you click the preset name, THEN start typing.
Again, not really a real text-style machine, but it saves you scrolling huge font lists and re-tracking and re-coloring and etc.

Link Character Style to Paragraph in CS5.5?

I have created a few different Character Styles in Indesign e.g. SM and I want all of the Character Style SM to link to it's definded abbreviation 'Site Manager' in the document.
Is it possible to link all of that Character Style throughought the document to that part of the document, or must I create all of them individually (monotonously)?

To anyone this may help in the near future:
To assign a Text Anchor, select what you want to be the destination (when you click on the link is where you end up): this case Principal Contractor (PC). Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks, click top right button.
New Hyperlink Destination, From drop-down menu select Text Anchor > Ok.
Congratulations you've now made your Text Anchor.
Setting up the Link:
Now we need to select the actual link itself.
Select whatever text you like;
Click top-right corner;
Insert Cross-Reference;
Under Text Anchor: you can select what you would like to link to. As you have already defined Principal Contractor as your destination link this will do nicely (and will be your only option selectable if you only did as above);
Under Cross-Reference Format > Drop - Down menu > Text Anchor Name: This is where you select what you wish it to be displayed as. You should create your own by clicking on the pen to the right > then the little + at bottom left corner.

Character styles & Body paragraph style not rendering as specified

Hi, I am creating my first epub, and am using InDesign CS 5 (no intention of upgrading). I've constructed it as a book, each chapter in its own file. I am encountering two problems I am unable to think my way out of:
1. None of the three character styles are rendering as they should.
-"Bold" text is rendering much larger than "Body" paragraph style, even though both are specified at 18 px.
-"Bullet" renders as UL, but at a much smaller point size than "Body" despite being specified as 18px.
-"Ital" is also rendering a much larger font size than is should.
2. I don't seem to be able to affect spacing between "Body" paragraphs, or below h1, etc.
Any insights? Any help?

Paragraph and Character styles in Fireworks

Hi
i used fireworks for a while, when it was still macromedia product, glade to see all the improvments in CS5.
i used Photoshop to create a very specific prototyping (including all CSS properties) of my website, but when i come to prototype the rest of the pages i totaly lost control, than i realize Photoshop is not the right tool for prototyping a whole website.
fireworks shuld be the answer of my prays, as i could read in the articles, in CS5 you can set all properties for text and fireworks will export it as CSS file, than al you have to do is copy and paste code according to your CSS structure, that grate time saver.
but one thing is really betters me, you cant do really good prototyping if you dont have the ability to create a paragraph and character styles (as you would with InDesign)
can fireworks create styles in the level of Indesign? and if not, what is the right workflow between Fireworks and Indesign?

Window > Find and Replace will enable you to change all the instances of a text color in the entire document.
You can create your own character styles by saving them in the Styles panel. To do this, click on an instance of a style you want to save, and then on the little down arrow at the top right of the Styles panel to open the New Style menu. Select which characteristics you want to save, then click the OK button to close the panel. To apply your custon style, select the object you want to apply it to, then click on your custom style.

Paragraph styles all default to wrong character style

So I set up a template and based all my character styles on my basic body copy. However, every new text box I create it defaults to the "character styles" to my section header color and sizing. I have to right click and "clear character styles" every single time. I've never had this happen before and cannot figure out how to fix it, it is such a PAIN!

From your explanation, I suspect your use of Character Styles might need to be redirected to Paragraph Styles. But that is conjecture, so I apologize if I'm wrong. In any case, to solve your problem; with nothing selected, choose No Character Style in the Character Styles panel. That sets the default for new frames.

Script needed to generate a list of paragraph and character styles from the Book Level

Hello,
I am using FrameMaker 11 in the Adobe Technical Communication Suite 4 and I need to find a script that will generate a list
of paragraph and character styles from the book level.
I am working with unstructured FrameMaker books, but will soon be looking at getting a conversion table developed
that will allow me to migrate all my data over to Dita (1.1 for now).
Any thoughts, ideas on this is very much appreciated.

Hi Jim,
I think the problem you are having with getting a response is that you are asking someone to write a script for you. Normally, you would have to pay someone for this, as it is something that folks do for a living.
Nonetheless, I had a few minutes to spare, so I worked up the following script that I believe does the job. It is very slow, clunky, and totally non-elegant, but I think it works. It leverages the book error log mechanism which is built in and accessible by scripts, but is spendidly unattractive. I hope this gives you a starting point. It could be made much more beautiful, of course, but such would take lots more time.

[JS InDesign CS3] Style groups, begone! (or: How do I take paragraph and character styles out of style groups?)

Sorry for this question (and my terrible English, by the way), I'm a javascript noob and I know when I've reached my limits.
Well, I'm trying to take a set of paragraph and character styles out of the style groups they are placed in, in hundreds of InDesign documents (that cannot be treated as a book). As far as I've tried (thanks to the invaluable help of previous posts in this forum) I've been able to move a style into a group and change it's position inside the group, inside the root level or even between groups. But it doesn't matter how I try, I don't know which move reference should I try in case I want to take every style out of their style group and place them after their original group folder, at the [Root] style level .
I have tried:

It didn't work, the script sent an invalid parameter value in the reference field, so I cant use the group folder itself as reference.

Okay, tried a few things and got really weird results!
1. You can move a style around inside its group.
2. You can move a style out of a group "to" another, but it will appear 'inside' that style. I got my test style as a sub-item of [Basic Paragraph], using index #1. With index #0 ([No Paragraph Style]) InDesign crashed.
3. You can duplicate the style, but then you get a copy in the same group. Still no luck.
4. Finally! What is the parent of a paragraph style?
Document | Application | ParagraphStyleGroup
"Application" is easy -- that's when you make a style global. So what's the difference between 'Document' and 'paragraphStyleGroup'? Simple -- well, when you finally get it...
pStylesInGroup[j].move (LocationOptions.AT_END, doc);
moves the style out of the group and to the end of the list in the document. I don't think it's possible to move it directly to a specific position into the main style list -- you first have to move it out of a group, then move it around in its own list.
Fortunately, it returns its new position as a ParagraphStyle again, so if needed, you can use
newStyle = pStylesInGroup[j].move (LocationOptions.AT_END, doc);
newStyle.move (LocationOptions.AFTER, pStyles[1]);

My table of contents does not use the entry style I select for words in the paragraph that have character styles applied to them in the chapter, so some of the letters are showing up as green, which is fine in the chapter but not in the TOC.

URGENT: Paragraph/Character style help (doing massive amounts manually)

I'm using CS3 at work but if it's magically easier, i may have access to cs4 (less likely but possible). It's a long post but I wanted to be in depth with my problem which at its core is simple. I have included a 2-page spread example in pdf.
What I greatly need help with is your opinion of how I can set this up to speed up the process, unify the document, and make future edits simple instead of crazy difficult. Can I configure a paragraph style to NOT replace font style? Can that style include my preset tabs (for bullets) which list as follows?:
number, small letter, roman numeral, bullet
Let me start by saying I SCOUR the net and all available options before posting. I'm cleaning up/editing a production manual for a portrait company I work for and am new to indesign but have figured many things out. I'm quite proficient with the Adobe Suite and computers. I'm using last year's indesign file and it was done very poorly. The words are right, the lines are right, the tabs are terrible and i've needed to move many pages out of order and add plenty. I also chose to disable 1 text box that flows from page to page (i see now it's helpful but they had made it impossible for me to use the existing one and I didn't have time to redo). The pictures I can add and manipulate freely but an embedded text-wrapped version would be nice as well (less important by far).
The manual is spiral bound with text on the right page and a notes page on the left for the layout. (flipped open the left side is lines for notes and the right side is operations). It's set up with a Header at the top (in some cases a sub header almost identical right below it), a space or two, then an outline format IE:
1)     Open job
          a) Go into G:\Location
          b) Select job code
               i) *Note: Be sure to select the right one (etc)..
2)      Continue

Page size is 8.5x11 with a .5 safe print border all around (document is 11x17). The Document is about 100 pages of written directions (so double that for indesign pages). It will be printed on a Xerox IGen3. The whole book give or take is set up like that. Thus, a few paragraph and character styles are in order. I've been editing/cleaning up each page re-tabbing, re-laying out. It's hell and must be done in 2 days.
I'm using Myriad Pro universally as the font. The sizes are as follows:
Header: 16 bold center
Sub (if applicable): 15 bold center
Body: 12 point
I've gotten paragraph styles to work sort of. I tried setting up numbering and bulleting but it's been giving me so much grief that I typed those all by hand or have just adjusted existing ones (I don't have much time currently, BUT need to learn for future updates and to convert it to styles). I know styles are the way to go with a couple master pages involving bulleting and character styles... however I could not become an expert overnight unfortunately; i tried =)
The real killer for paragraph styles have been:
- The portions of the directions that pertain to specific menu options or clicks are in bold, occasional important info is red. Normal text including numbers/bullets are normal. There are many words repeated that need bold so perhaps some kind of search/replace script could help however im not positive.
- When I go to apply a paragraph style it must make all type bold or not bold. It doesn't replace the color of the text which is good.
- Having major trouble with bullets/numbers working the way i'd like.

It is unfortunate you only have two days, but you could play around with these suggestions below and see if they help more than they hender... (NOTE: SAVE A COPY OF THE DOCUMENT BEFORE YOU START MONKEYING AROUND IN CASE YOU HATE THE RESULTS!)
For starters, you could certainly do the lists via stylesheet. It would require 3 lists based on your sample. Base list 2 and 3 on list 1 or all 3 on a default List paragraph style, so that you can globally control your list formatting without having to change all 3 each time you want to apply a tweak.
List 1 would be leve 1, 1,2,3 style with indents like 3p, -1.5, 3p. Align right and don't restart numbers. If you want bold numbers, make a bold character style called List# and apply it.
List 2 would be level 2, a,b,c style with indents like 4p, -1p, 4p. Restart on level change.
List 3 would be level 3, i,ii,iii style with indents like 6.5p, -1.5p, 6.5p. Restart on level change.
Tweak as necessary to match your actual text.
Then just do a global GREP search and replace, replacing out the manual list numbers with real styles.
List 1 replace ^\t[0-9]+\t with ~- (discretionary hyphen is a nice invisible character that won't break anything) and paragraph style of list1.
List 2 replace ^\t\t[a-z].\t with ~- and paragraph style list2.
List 3 replace ^\t\t\t[ivx].\t with ~- and paragraph style list3.
The last step of list replacement would be to manually restart numbering for each new list.
As for the keywords, unless you have a complete list of what will be bold and it will always be bold, just manually style them with character styles.
Make a character style called "Keyword" and apply bold to the formatting.
Make a character style called "Keyword Important" and apply bold and red formatting.
If you know certain words are always, always the same and you have CS4, you could create a GREP style that applied Keyword character style to any words that matched.
For example, if the keywords Left, Right, Top, Bottom always were bolded at the beginning of the paragraph, you could add the GREP style that applied Keyword to ^(Top|Bottom|Left|Right).
In all likelihood you will be applying a lot of manual keywords too though, so make sure you put a keyboard shortcut on (like cmd-opt-1, 2, etc) on the Keyword and Keyword Important character styles. That way you can just fire through selecting text and whacking cmd-opt-1 where appropriate.

Tagging character styles and paragraph styles in inDesign

I'm working on a complex book in which everything on the pages is styled.
I've been asked to tag the vocabulary terms in the text, so that the correct page number shows up in the index.
I've been asked to tag the folios as well, for the table of contents.
The folios are a paragraph style.
The vocabulary terms are styled with a character style.
How do I do this?
Any help much appreciated.

InDesign's built-in Table of Contents function picks up text based on paragraph styles. I'm not sure you really men, though, that you want to pick up the folios, if you are using the term as I understand it, to mean the page numbers. You really want to pick up the various headings used to identify the topics or titles. ID will supply the page numbers.
As for the indexing, there may be a script that can find text with a particular character style assigned and add it to an index (you should ask over in the scripting forum: InDesign Scripting) but you should also read the Help on Indexes and learn more about how they operate.

Unable to save paragraph and character styles

I noticed an issue popping up for me in CS6 yesterday. I thought it was originally because of Fireworks saved PSD but an effort re-create the file from scratch in PS I'm coming across the same issue. In PS when I have a large amount of text layers and create a paragraph or character style, when I have ANY layer/group in my document locked I'm unable to save any paragraph or layer styles. Regardless of the layer or group being locked and regardless of what layer is highlighted I'm unable to save styles / any settings / name etc. The error I get for character styles for example is:
"Could not complete the Modify Named Character Style command because a specified layer is locked."
I did notice that in the Fireworks created PSD that without any layer even being locked I'd still get an error. It may be that this other document got some bad mojo from the Fireworks PSD. When creating a test doc and only creating a couple text layers and a bunch of empty groups and layers I'm unable to reproduce this. It appears to happen to me when I have a slew of text layers.
Has anyone else experienced this and figured out a more solid workaround?

If you want to add the styles to an already created document:
1) Create you Character style containing only the character color
2) Find and Replace, searching for text with red color and replace formatting with the new character style. (Don't type anything in the text part of the Find and Replace dialog)
3) Create and apply your paragraph style to all. The text with the Character Style applied will stay red.

Everything should be easy to set in the WordRTFImportPreference except for the mappings.
I tried using app.activeDocument. paraStyleMappings.add("Normal","Normal 2",   MapType.STYLE_MAPPING_RULE) after setting app.generalPreferences.mapStylesOnContentPlace = true
Doesn't work . I suspect the mappings are only good for XML placements and not Word ones, in which case I guess the way to do it would be to us changeText() on the styles. This is not a great solution as the changes would be done after placement unlike when using the UI before the placement.
Has anyone done this or got any ideas?

Paragraph Tools from SiliconPrairieSoftware.com will do it and it's cheap.
Note that you may not want to convert H1 to Heading1, but convert in the
opposite direction. A lot of expert Framers use the keyboard to choose
paragraph tags instead of the mouse-- it's faster-- and have set up short
names for paragraph formats to make that go even faster. (Someone who uses
the technique can explain it better than I.) If you have members of your
team who use this method, changing to the longer tagname may slow them down

[CS5 JS] Problem in Applying character styles xml tag names

e.g. 1
<italic>This is a italic text with <sup>superscript value</sup></italic>
e.g.2
<sup>This is a superscript text with <bold>Bold superscript</bold></sup>
<italic> mapped to character style "italic" and
<sup> mapped to character style "sup"
In my java script I already mapped the xml tags to specific character styles. In some of the cases (see e.g.1 and e.g.2) I need to map it to other character styles.
In e.g.1 I need to apply a new character styles "italicSup" for the text "superscript value" same way
In e.g.2 I need to apply a new character styles "BoldSup" for the text "Bold superscript".
Can any know how to do this?

Problem with paragraph and character style

Recently I have noticed that when I alter a paragraph or character style that the text won't change to the changes I performed.
It doesn't matter whether it's just the preview mode or when I clicked "OK"- no changes will be performed whether it be typeface or size.
Does anyone know what can be wrong?

My bet is that you haven't got a clear understanding of the difference between character styles and paragraph styles, and that you are using the former incorrectly.
Paragraph styles include basic font formatting information that is applied to all text in a paragraph UNLESS that text also has either a character style or a local format override (select the text and change something) applied. The formatting heirarchy works with paragraph style at the bottom, character styles trump formatting applied in the paragraph style, and local formatting trums everything else.
Select the text in question. Look in the the Paragraph Style field in the Control panel, or open the Paragraph Styles panel to see what is applied. If there is a plus sign next to the name local formatting overrides have been applied (hold the Alt or Opt key and click the style name to remove them), but character styles are not considered overrides, so if there is no plus sign, check the Character Style field in the control panel or ope the Character Styles panel to check if any character styles are also applied.

I would like to change things like-
change the color of the default yellow notebook like ruled paper?
apple character or paragraph styles to notes and to do's?
Main calender for item related Dates
The red icon next to the to-do items
number of columns
Hold/Insert/Link/Attach additional relevant files?
Similair to other third party project organizational software such as OmniPlan / Schoolhouse/ KIT (Keep it Together)
I was also thinking the ability to apply my mail rules to them would further their efficiency. Does anyone know if this is possible?

In the preferences menu, under "composing" There is an option for "Create Notes & To Do's in:" With the options being "On My Mac" and "[email protected]".
I did not have this set properly, and changing it meant that selecting text in a note and making a to do gave me the option of putting it in my local calendars.
However, when I select text from an e-mail it still puts it in my "[email protected]" calendar.
Partial fix --> Still not exactly what I want to see.
