Character Styles parameters that doesn't apply

Yesterday, I've created a "No Break" character style to use with GREP Styles. In this Style, only the No Break checkbox is checked.
The problem was that the GREP Style expressions .{8}$ worked with all my other character style but the "No Break". I double checked the checkbox and the little summary on the first panel when editing the style was showing "[none] + no break".
Today, i open the document and the "No Break" checkbox wasn't checked. Yesterday it was but did not apply. I checked it and now it work.
Did this happen to anyone else? This is the second time it happen to me.
PS: Before anyone ask, i did reset the prefs (restarting InDesign CS4 with the 4 magic key pressed) and also restarted my computer.
Thanks
Ben

How do I uninstall Mac Photoshop CS5 when I have installed CS5.1 also? The Adobe Application Manager just shows one version to uninstall which I would guess is the CS5.1 version.

  • How do I get rid of an app update notification that doesn't apply to my version of OS

    I have an app on my iMac which is running Snow Leopard. A recent udate has been issued that only applies to Lion OS but the update notification still shows on my App Store. I can't get rid off it even if I try downloading it. Any suggestions please?

    HI Dennis...
    Try dragging the App Store icon straight up off the Dock so it goes, "poof" ...
    Now go to your Applications folder. Drag the App Store icon to the Dock.
    Restart your Mac.
    Hopefully the update badge is gone.

  • Macbook air, ps cs4  and updates that doesn't apply!

    Hello,
    I'm working on my new macbook air (last model). I installed Photoshop cs4 and try to install also the updates: 11.0.2 and other components. The software updater downloads all the softwares and complete the procedure. But, when I restart PS (it is the origianl version) there is no sign of the last updates and if I check again for other updates I found the same ones I've just installed ready to be download. I don't understand why this happens and don't find other discussions in the forum.
    Any suggestions?
    many thanks

  • Applying [None] character style

    I have a script that finds text with a certain character style, cuts that text from the main story and anchors it in a frame that sits in the margin.
    Everything works fine except that I'd like to have the option of removing the character style. However, when I apply the [None] character style InD shows [None] in the character style lists but the formatting for the character style that was just removed remains on the text.
    Is there a way to have it work as if the [None] was manually selected from the character style list? i.e.: where the character style formatting is removed as well?
    Thanks,
    Ken

    Hello!
    I'm trying to start understanding this javascript thing... Does anyone know how I can modify this so it will also have the option of removing all the character styles in all the text frames, or all the stories in the document? I have several documents with 10 stories each that will need to have the character styles removed before we continue formatting.
    I took a swing at it myself, but haven't been able to get it to work. I really don't know much about scripting! Here's what I tried:
    if (app.documents.length == 0) ErrorExit("Please open a document and try again.");
    var gScriptName = "Apply character style None keeping overrides";
    var gScriptVersion = "1.0";
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    var sel = doc.selection[0];
    var all = app.documents[0].stories.everyItem()
    if (doc.selection.length != 1) ErrorExit("One text frame or some text should be selected, or the cursor should be inserted into the text.");
    if (sel.constructor.name == "TextFrame") { // a text frame is selected
         ApplyNone(sel.texts[0]);
    else if (sel.constructor.name == "Character" || // some text is selected
         sel.constructor.name == "Word" ||
         sel.constructor.name == "TextStyleRange" ||
         sel.constructor.name == "Line" ||
         sel.constructor.name == "Paragraph" ||
         sel.constructor.name == "TextColumn" ||
         sel.constructor.name == "Text")
              ApplyNone(sel);
    else {
         ApplyNone(all);
    //===================================== FUNCTIONS  ======================================
    function ApplyNone(sel) {
         var noneStyle = doc.characterStyles.item("[None]");
         var basedOnNone = app.activeDocument.characterStyles.add({name:"None", basedOn:noneStyle});
         sel.applyCharacterStyle(basedOnNone);
         basedOnNone.remove(noneStyle);
    function ErrorExit(error, icon) {
         alert(error, gScriptName + " - " + gScriptVersion, icon);
         exit();
    I also tried this, but to no avail.
    ar gScriptName = "Apply character style None keeping overrides";
    var gScriptVersion = "1.0";
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    var sel = doc.selection[0];
    var all = app.documents[0].stories.everyItem()
    ApplyNone(all);
    //===================================== FUNCTIONS  ======================================
    function ApplyNone(sel) {
         var noneStyle = doc.characterStyles.item("[None]");
         var basedOnNone = app.activeDocument.characterStyles.add({name:"None", basedOn:noneStyle});
         all.applyCharacterStyle(basedOnNone);
         basedOnNone.remove(noneStyle);
    function ErrorExit(error, icon) {
         alert(error, gScriptName + " - " + gScriptVersion, icon);
         exit();
    Any thoughts? I'm thinking that app.documents[0].stories.everyItem() probably isn't right...
    Thanks for your help!

  • Cross references not picking up character styles in source text

    I'm getting some annoying odd behaviour with cross references in Frame 12.
    I have some tables, where the paragraph style in the cell is called "Cell Body" (nothing odd there).
    Quite a few of the cells only have one word in them, and that word is set to courier font with a character style (called "Code").
    Then, elsewhere in the document, I am referring to this text using cross references. I am referencing the paragraph style Cell Body, and the cross reference format applied is like this "<hyperlink><$paratext><Default ¶ Font>"
    "hyperlink" is another character style that makes the text go green.
    So, the cross reference out to take the text from the cell (in Courier) and reproduce it, coloured green.
    However for about half of these cross references, it isn't picking up the Code character style in the source text, so the cross ref is just green, no green courier.
    Things are further bamboozled when I output to HTML Help.
    In the CHM file, the cross refs which appear to work OK (green courier) are now just courier.
    The ones which failed to pick up the courier look the same as they do in Frame (just green).
    Any ideas as to what's going on?
    I've tried troubleshooting by clearing the cells, reapplying the para style and default character style, then reapplying the code character style, then replacing the cross reference - which sometimes seemed to fix it but didn't always.

    Using two character tags in-line together (a la <hyperlink><Code>) is asking for trouble. IIRC, FM doesn't re-apply these in order on an update and depending upon how they are defined (and what is set to AsIs), the outer one usually wins. .
    So why does the blimmin' dialog invite me to do precisely that, by providing me with a list of all the character styles I have, and allowing me to select as many of them as I like??? /sulks/   Indeed, if Frame still shipped with a printed user guide instead of  stupid "optimised for viewing on iPhones" online webhelp nonsense, I suspect I might very well be able to find an example in the manual of using multiple character styles in that dialog!  If it doesn't want you to use more than one, why doesn't it grey out after you add the first one? /sighs/  The concept is called "cascading styles", it's a fundamental web paradigm! And it works in the main body text - why not in Xrefs!
    Also, I have been very scrupulous to keep my character styles orthogonal so none of their AsIs's mash each other up.
    But, rant over, I shall follow your splendid suggestion for a "Code Hyperlink" style.

    Frankly, for my current project, I've given up trying to jump through hoops for Publish - I'm concentrating on getting the Frame source right and assuming these quirks will be fixed in Frame 13 (or 14, depending on how superstitious they are). Because if I put in ad hoc workarounds for them in Frame 12, I (or a colleague) will only have to undo them later when they're fixed, and by then we'll all have forgotten what the original problem was.

  • URGENT: Paragraph/Character style help (doing massive amounts manually)

    I'm using CS3 at work but if it's magically easier, i may have access to cs4 (less likely but possible). It's a long post but I wanted to be in  depth with my problem which at its core is simple. I have included a 2-page spread example in pdf.
    What I greatly need help with is your opinion of how I can set this up to speed up the process, unify the document, and make future edits simple instead of crazy difficult. Can I configure a paragraph style to NOT replace font style? Can that style include my preset tabs (for bullets) which list as follows?:
    number, small letter, roman numeral, bullet
    Let me start by saying I SCOUR the net and all available options before posting.  I'm cleaning up/editing a production manual for a portrait company I work for and am new to indesign but have figured many things out. I'm quite proficient with the Adobe Suite and computers. I'm using last year's indesign file and it was done very poorly. The words are right, the lines are right, the tabs are terrible and i've needed to move many pages out of order and add plenty. I also chose to disable 1 text box that flows from page to page (i see now it's helpful but they had made it impossible for me to use the existing one and I didn't have time to redo). The pictures I can add and manipulate freely but an embedded text-wrapped version would be nice as well (less important by far).
    The manual is spiral bound with text on the right page and a notes page on the left for the layout. (flipped open the left side is lines for notes and the right side is operations). It's set up with a Header at the top (in some cases a sub header almost identical right below it), a space or two, then an outline format IE:
    1)     Open job
              a) Go into G:\Location
              b) Select job code
                   i) *Note: Be sure to select the right one (etc)..
    2)      Continue

    Page size is 8.5x11 with a .5 safe print border all around (document is 11x17). The Document is about 100 pages of written directions (so double that for indesign pages). It will be printed on a Xerox IGen3.  The whole book give or take is set up like that. Thus, a few paragraph and character styles are in order. I've been editing/cleaning up each page re-tabbing, re-laying out. It's hell and must be done in 2 days.
    I'm using Myriad Pro universally as the font.  The sizes are as follows:
    Header: 16 bold center
    Sub (if applicable): 15 bold center
    Body: 12 point
    I've gotten paragraph styles to work sort of. I tried setting up numbering and bulleting but it's been giving me so much grief that I typed those all by hand or have just adjusted existing ones (I don't have much time currently, BUT need to learn for future updates and to convert it to styles). I know styles are the way to go with a couple master pages involving bulleting and character styles... however I could not become an expert overnight unfortunately; i tried =)
    The real killer for paragraph styles have been:
    - The portions of the directions that pertain to specific menu options or clicks are in bold, occasional important info is red. Normal text including numbers/bullets are normal. There are many words repeated that need bold so perhaps some kind of search/replace script could help however im not positive.
    - When I go to apply a paragraph style it must make all type bold or not bold. It doesn't replace the color of the text which is good.
    -  Having major trouble with bullets/numbers working the way i'd like.

    It is unfortunate you only have two days, but you could play around with these suggestions below and see if they help more than they hender... (NOTE: SAVE A COPY OF THE DOCUMENT BEFORE YOU START MONKEYING AROUND IN CASE YOU HATE THE RESULTS!)
    For starters, you could certainly do the lists via stylesheet. It would require 3 lists based on your sample. Base list 2 and 3 on list 1 or all 3 on a default List paragraph style, so that you can globally control your list formatting without having to change all 3 each time you want to apply a tweak.
    List 1 would be leve 1, 1,2,3 style with indents like 3p, -1.5, 3p. Align right and don't restart numbers. If you want bold numbers, make a bold character style called List# and apply it.
    List 2 would be level 2, a,b,c style with indents like 4p, -1p, 4p. Restart on level change.
    List 3 would be level 3, i,ii,iii style with indents like 6.5p, -1.5p, 6.5p. Restart on level change.
    Tweak as necessary to match your actual text.
    Then just do a global GREP search and replace, replacing out the manual list numbers with real styles.
    List 1 replace ^\t[0-9]+\t with ~- (discretionary hyphen is a nice invisible character that won't break anything) and paragraph style of list1.
    List 2 replace ^\t\t[a-z].\t with ~- and paragraph style list2.
    List 3 replace ^\t\t\t[ivx].\t with ~- and paragraph style list3.
    The last step of list replacement would be to manually restart numbering for each new list.
    As for the keywords, unless you have a complete list of what will be bold and it will always be bold, just manually style them with character styles.
    Make a character style called "Keyword" and apply bold to the formatting.
    Make a character style called "Keyword Important" and apply bold and red formatting.
    If you know certain words are always, always the same and you have CS4, you could create a GREP style that applied Keyword character style to any words that matched.
    For example, if the keywords Left, Right, Top, Bottom always were bolded at the beginning of the paragraph, you could add the GREP style that applied Keyword to ^(Top|Bottom|Left|Right).
    In all likelihood you will be applying a lot of manual keywords too though, so make sure you put a keyboard shortcut on (like cmd-opt-1, 2, etc) on the Keyword and Keyword Important character styles. That way you can just fire through selecting text and whacking cmd-opt-1 where appropriate.

  • How to style text that is enclosed in space characters

    Via a paragraph style sheet, I need to apply character styles to text that is enclosed in space characters.
    For example:
    The cat <<thinspace>> sat <<thinspace>> on the <<enspace>>mat<<enspace>>
    In the above, "Sat" would have one character style while "Mat" will have another.
    What's the best way of doing this?
    I know Indesign has GREP styles but that doesn't seem to work to text enclosed in space characters.
    Also the only reason I am using space characters is because they are invisible when printed.
    Is there any other method for wrapping text to mark it out as needing to be tagged with a style?
    Thanks!

    Would non-joiner characters surrounding target words work for you? In the GREP style dialog box in the paragraph style panel, the non-joiner is under the @button > Other. Non-joiners take no space and do not print.
    If there's a collection of words that need a specific character style for specific words, you could define each GREP action with @Locations > word boundary before and after the word. If there are many words in the collection, with many GREP style clauses, performance could slow.

  • Kindle-plug in Character Styles don't embed fonts

    We have a special font used for our company's publications and also a math type font (Euclid Symbol). The book is built in InDesign CS6 and will be exported to a .mobi file using the export to kindle plugin. The export to kindle will not see the symbols if every instance has a character style applied to it.  I have to make sure that one of the special characters or math type symbols does not use the character style that I've applied to all the other special symbols. If there is just one "override", then the export to kindle sees it. So the issue seems to be Character Style related to me. Of course this goes against everything that I know about paragraph and character styles. That means that every chapter has an instance of "override" that I have to locate if I should choose to make a global change to the book. So I don't really consider this work around a solution. Can you please take a look at this Character Style/Span issue with the Kindle Plugin.

    I have sent to epub and then to kindle in that manner. You are correct, it does work. This new export to Kindle is so much better than the previous one they had, that I was hoping to be able to skip all the extra steps. I am interested in asking the InDesign developers to at least take a look at the issue. Do they receive messages from this forum? Or do I need to submit it somewhere else?

  • Make paragraph style not override character style?

    Hi.
    Is there any way to make a paragraph style NOT override a character style?
    For example, I write a lot of scientific reports in Pages and then I use subscript and superscript often and so I have made a character style for that. But if I want to perhaps change the spacing between paragraphs in my body style. I select a paragraph, change the settings that I want and then I right click on the paragraph style and choose "redefine style from selection". Then I select all of that style and choose "revert to defined style" to get the updated paragraph spacing. But what this does is that it overrides all of the character styles so that everything in sub/superscript, bold, italic etc get back to the style. This is really bugging me out.
    For the character styles you can select what attributes you want them to affect, is there any way to do this with paragraph styles as well? Or maybe some of you have got a good way to make it work.
    Thanks in advance.

    When you redefine the paragraph style, all paragraphs using that style will display the new style properties, unless you've overriden them. Presumably this is why you choose "revert to defined style", so that other paragraphs that you've stylistically modified take on the proper paragraph style properties. If not, why revert at all?
    Instead of using revert, why not re-apply the paragraph style (just click on the selected style in the drawer, or pick the selected item from the pop-up menu). It will discard your unwanted paragraph style overrides, and preserve the character styles.

  • How can I change a local format (bol, italics) to character style

    Hi, I'm new in scripting. I need to change local formats to character styles in some documents, but I can't find the proper ID Object Model to do it in Java. Can somebody help me?

    Thanks for the help! It worked! But I have two problems now:
    1. The documents use Helvetica fonts (light, lightitalic, semibold, etc.) on headings, and the script doesn't recognize nor replace them as character styles. I guess I should replace those fonts with a compatible one (Times New Roman, perhaps). Is there any script that may do that?
    2. Some paragraph styles use bold by default, but the script generates a character style in that cases too. The perfectpreptex you send me attend to fix this problem, but the styles document crashes!!

    What's your need?
    Acrobat can convert/export PDF documents into RTF format, which retains the font attributes, but not the style names.
    Depending on your needs, there may be a way to keep track of the style name information. For example, you may want to a new layer in InDesign, annotate the styles on the new layer, export from InDesign to PDF preserving the layers; you can display the annotated layer to provide style information, and hide it when not needed.
    The more you can explain, the more help might be available.
