Character Viewer Flashes on/off, Can't be Used

I'm having what seems to be a fairly common issue with the character viewer, accessible via the Language & Text System Pref. pane. The Character Viewer is flashing on and off, and I'm unable to select any of the options within the pane as it appears. It's completely unresponsive to clicks.
Likewise, I've already tried trashing the User > Library > Preferences > CharacterPaletteIM.plist file, but the issue continues to occur.
I'm grateful for any help. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I did set up a new user account, and used the Character Viewer w/o any issues. Is there a specific process that I should be following to trash the .plist file? Can you — or anyone — make additional recommendations?

Why is Character Palette flashing on & off on my screen?

When working in Pages, suddenly the Character Palette became non-functioning...I saved my document, then closed the program, but the non-functioning Character Palette continued to show. I then tried a re-boot-shut down the computer & restarted it. It then froze once it opened & didn't show any docking station or other menu items---rebooting 3 times continued this freeze. I then shut down, unplugged & restarted. This time the docking station & everything else showed up, but for some reason the Character Palette flashed on & off-a completely blank window with just the title...it's still flashing on & off randomly! Do I attempt a reboot again? What's the bug? I'm frustrated!!

Try to delete the "com.apple.CharPaletteCache.plist" at "<YourHDName>/Users/<YourAccount>/Library/Caches/"? And the "com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist" at "<YourHDName>/Users/<YourAccount>/Library/Preferences".

How to quickly switch between speech bubble and highlight text in pdf viewer in Maverics. Can now only use menu to change to speech bubble in Maverics (Tool Icon gone since Lion and no shortcut listed)

I use Preview to mark up student assignments, switching between the speech bubble and highlight markup tools. The speech bubble is not on the toolbar since Maverics upgrade. It also have no shortcut, which means navigating the menu every time since the Text shortcut, under which the speech bubble is now located does not remember the previously selected item and always reverts to plain text.
From a usability point of view, for me this is a massive step backward since the Lion version...
Or is there some hidden magic that will let me switch between these tools without having to navigate the menu everytime...

100% agreed with this. The new interface is far too bulky, Even on my gaming computer's massive 21inch monitor, it's nearly impossible to keep up with my chat group of 23+ people. I constantly have to scroll back up to read messages, making it furstrating and inconveniant. And now that the update is being forced on all of them, they're complaning of the same issues. Like said previously, these are full computers, Not bloody tablets or cell phones, but even then the new skype's even more useless on my Venue8 Pro tablet, I get to see a whole 3 messages at a time (And don't get me started on the Win8 Skype app). And what made it worse, MS has removed all previous versions of skype from the internet. THEN even when I managed to get my hands on an old version, I can only log it in once before it kicks me off and gives me a worthless error message, "Skype Can't Connect". (But seriously, what happened to giving us error codes guys? Advanced users like myself want to be able to fix the issue ourselves!) MS, I'm sorry but, you need to stop fixing things that are not broken. I'm wasing my time trying to correct this now, and I really don't apreciate that. What happened to quality control and testing?

If I apply a per device CAL does it stick with certain devices or when the devices sign off can new ones use the same licences

I purchased a per device CAL and was wondering about this because we have more than 5 devices. If one device is signed on and is using a licence then signs off does that licence become available for a new device then? Or am I stuck with the same 5 devices

When an RDS device CAL is issued it remains assigned to the device it was issues to until it expires. It cannot be used by another device until it expires.
An RDS per device cal is set to expire in a random inteval between 52 and 89 days. Once this interval expires, the device Cal is returned to the pool. You can revoke RDS CALs manually (up to 20% of your total) with Remote Desktop Licensing Manager.

How to get Character Viewer to stay visible (esp. in Word for Mac)?

I'm asking this on behalf of a friend who has a 2013 13-inch (non-retina) MackBook Pro and uses it with an Apple Cinema Display. Since the upgrade to Mavericks the behaviour of the Character Viewer has changed, where it no longer 'sticks' (stays both active and on top) as a visible window when you switch applications: now it needs to be called up from within each application, and will be visible when working with that app.
He needs the Character Viewer open all the time and this change is inconvenient (he draws special characters from it constantly). But the main problem is that he mostly works in MS Word for Mac and as far as I can tell Microsoft have not updated Word to respect the behaviour Mavericks intends for Character Viewer: to stay visible while working. Instead, the Character Viewer window randomly closes. So, while hoping for an update from MS (but not holding breath since they provide their own inferior version of a glyph viewer in Word)) I have two questions:
1. Can anyone suggest a way, perhaps using Applescript or Automator (which I don't know how to use), to make the Character Viewer always stay open and visible while using any application? This would be the preferable solution, in effect restoring the behaviour seen before Mavericks.
Or
2. Can someone give us some guidance on how to make a custom keyboard shortcut in Word for Mac that we could assign to bring up the (OSX) Character Viewer, since the usual system shortcut for that (control-command-space) is not respected in Word. Or alternatively, an Applescript or Automator solution for this that would be available from within Word?

->System Preferences->Keyboard and check [ ] Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in menu bar
It closes when I switch desktops with spaces or open another App, but it displays when I go back to the Word window

Character viewer all screwed up

Suddenly when I open the character viewer I don't get what I used to get.
I'm looking for "accented Latin" but it's gone

Yes, the new Character Viewer is difficult to say the least.
The window and the divider are moveable; however, the cursor doesn't change to notify you that it is possible. Just click there and drag.
Latin is an option in the left column, and the display will have every latin character with and without accents.
It is possible to type just about any accented character using the Extended keyboard layouts.
The basic chording keys are on all latin keyboards, but the extended keyboards have almost all of them.
If you are not aware of what I mean by "chording," you can type accented characters from the keyboard by using the Option (alt) key with a specialy chording key + character you want accented.
The basic keyboards have `´~¨^
To type ö, press opt-u, then o.
As I stated, there are more accents available on the Extended keyboards. There doesn't appear to be a British extended, but there is an Irish, if that has a similar layout.
You can view the chording keys on any keyboard layout by opening the Keyboard Viewer and pressing the Option key. They turn orange.

Having trouble finding Character viewer

I am having trouble finding the Character Viewer. I've looked in the Launchpad and also in Finder under Applications. If I accidentally sent it to the Trash and emptied it can I reinstall?

Actually I'm not looking for the Font Book , I'm looking for the Character Viewer. FontBook I can find and it does not appear to give me what I want. I was already using the Character Viewer quite a bit for a while, using it to find the pi sign, upside down exclamation points, fractions, foreign currency symbols and stuff like that.
I suspect I turfed the app without realizing what I was doing at the time. This is my first Mac and I am still acclimatizing to it. Like I said, it can't be found in Finder under Applications so I'm thinking it must be missing.

Animate a character with Flash environment + AS3

This is a trouble I've been facing for YEARS, and no way for me to solve it. Save me my heros.
I'm trying to animate a character with Flash whose face can be changed.
So I have a Character MovieClip in which I have 4 frames. In each frame there is an animation of the little guy : one going down, one going left, right, and up.
In each animation there is the MovieClip Head in which you can attach a hat, sunglasses, hair etc... Am I clear enough ?
Here is the problem : since the head is going to be changed by the player, the MovieClip Head MUST have the same reference in each frame in each animation. Unfortunatly, Flash thinks the MovieClip Head is a new one on each animation of the little guy running. So for instance, if I attach sunglasses on the clip Head, then they will disappear as soon as the character will change his direction since Flash doesn't know the Head I'm using in the new animation isn't a new one.
What am I doing wrong ?
If I'm not clear enough, please tell me. I REALLY want to understand how to make such a thing on Flash.

I've edited your files and updated here.
From looking at your files, I decided that the easiest solution without totally restructuring what you had would be the third solution, watching the stage for heads to be added, then updating any head you happen to get.
To make this work, I ran the Set Instance Name on Multiple Frames extension to set all of the Head layers to "head." The reasoning behind this was that you didn't have a Class name assigned to your Head instance, so I fell back on checking to see if the instance name was "head." So the instance name needed to be assigned to be head.
A few other things I noticed:
Your Character symbol and your Character .as Class had the same name. This can confuse the compiler, but more importantly, this would prevent you from having any other Character symbols that used the same .as file. This is why I renamed the symbol and its Linkage name to CharacterMC.
Your button instance names start with Upper Case letters. In ActionScript, the convention is for Class members to be named starting with a lower case letter. Even though you don't see the Class in an .as file since you're not using a main Document Class, it still exists (created silently in the background by the compiler) and you still should follow the convention if for no other reason than that you will probably want to move to a main Document Class at some point.
When you use the underscore character to start a variable name, this denotes that it's internal storage for a variable that's accessible through a getter/setter pair. This is not how you've used it, but this is understandable. The standards for this have evolved over the years as AS3 has matured, and I only noticed this in the last version of the Adobe standards that was available. That seems to be a dead link now. That said, I followed what you are already doing, because it just creates confusion to do half your variables one way and half another.
I personally prefer protected to private, because you really need to know what you're doing and understand how your code is likely to evolve to be able to set things to private yet provide enough hooks for you or other developers to be able to extend your code. IME the vast majority of developers simply don't have this level of clairvoyance. However, I followed what you were already doing.
I think you should either instantiate everything and add it to the stage yourself or let the Flash player do it, not mix and match. There's more information available on the former technique than the latter, so you should probably go that way.

The character viewer is corrupted. How can this be corrected?

My Character Viewer is corrupted and cannot load the window for viewing. Just flashes on and off the screen until I turn it off. How can I get it back? Can't view special characters without it.

Can't view flash in Facebook - Anywhere else is fine!

Okay, so new laptop and, no matter what I do, I can't view flash in Facebook. When I click on the video I get an error saying "Flash Player upgrade required". If I click upgrade I am told by the adobe page that my player is already up to date.
I can view flash ANYWHERE else, but not in facebook. If a youtube clip is embedded in facebook I get the error message, but if I click through to the video on youtube and view it directly, it works fine.
I have tried everything. I have tried clearing my cache, deleting the adobe player cache, reinstalling my browser, re-installing flash player. Nothing I do will let me watch flash embedded in facebook. It makes no sense.
I am running Windows 7 - 64bit. Chrome is my browser, but I have exactly the same issue in any browser. I have disabled my virus scanner (avast) but the problem persists. This seems to be a fairly common problem judging by my google searches, but there never seems to be an answer.
This is a new laptop, so hardly anything installed.

You can set the prefs dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.* to false on the about:config page to disable the plugin-container process.

Can't view flash on websites without clicking on word flash

I am on a mac running snow leopard. I just downloaded flash player from Adobe. I installed. It's on my desktop. IF i go to any website that has a flash player image, all I see on the screen is a grey window with the word Flash. If i click on the word, then i see the flash, but it doesnt' happen automatically like it used to on my old g-5 mac.. Why?
also, I want the flash icon off my desktop, where can I put it, do I move it to applications folder?

When you use the Flash Player Uninstaller(need to do) and Reboot(restart your computer) then you need to use the Flash Player Installer to Install it, then Reboot. Flash Player is a browser plugin and works thru your browser. It is not a standalone
Player.
I'm not that familiar with Mac, but the Flash Player icon may represent the Installer? Read the Troubleshooting Guide which may be helpful. I think you could use "Trash" to remove the icon? Not sure, just have read that somewhere.

I need to add one more thing for others who might benefit from the above note re Camino.
I also at the same time downloaded new plug ins from Adobe for Flash 9. There were two plugins which I deleted. One of the two new ones was of a later date, the other was the same as the one I deleted. So that might have helped change things.
So the summary of what fixed it for me is:
Latest version of Camino browser.
Latest version of Flash plug ins.
Also, after this, I could even use previously unusable services like Rhapsody, with Firefox, a browser that didn't work before.
So that may indicate that just the new Flash plugins did the trick. But not sure of that for reasons too lengthy to go into now. Try updating both and see. It worked for me, and that's after trying much stuff for a workaround.

A lot of characters missing from "Character Viewer" .. can I get them?

Character Viewer isn't doing what I want it to do, can somebody help me?
Here's the issue: I have a font installed called Anastasia, which contains musical symbols. I would like to be able to bring up its whole character set on the screen so I can pick which character to insert in my document. It seems to me that this is what Character Viewer is intended to do; however, I can find no way to view the character set for this particular font, Anastasia. The "Muscial Symbols" collection brings up a limited set of symbols, such as notes, but it's an incomplete set and it does not show Anastasia as one of the available font variations. This font is definitely installed and at least one of my installed apps uses it routinely. But it doesn't seem to be accessible through Character Viewer. What am I doing wrong?

Can't insert characters from Character Viewer

I have used Character Viewer in the past. The way it worked was to highlight the character in Character Viewer and then click the "insert" button. I can bring up Character Viewer and see all the characters, but even after highlighting a character, I cannot insert it into the document.
Anybody else have the same problem? Any suggestions?

You need to have a machine with 10.6 on it, then find the CharacterPalette.app in System/Library/Input Methods, then move it to your mountain lion machine.
