Character viewer window has no content

Character viewer is on top menu, the window comes up, with Math, Arrows, etc., but nothing shows up when I select any of the categories in left hand window.
Is there a preference file I can delete?

Yes, the .plist with CharacterPalette in its name in Home/Library/Preferences

Can't place Character Viewer window on Dock anymore since last system update

I always placed the open Character Viewer window on the Dock, when I knew I was going to use it alot that day. No longer able to do that; that option changed with one of the system updates. Can I get that option back?

The only way to get an option back that a system Upgrade changed
would be to revert to the system where the feature existed; unless
the problem was something else in the system causing the failure.
That is why when Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.7 was shown, I asked.
Because I know there were significant changes after Lion 10.7.5.
Some users of an older system will make a full system clone on a
bootable external hard disk drive, when they may need to use an
older system and want features or applications later that would no
longer be supported by an Upgrade. (Updates aren't as significant.)
This is why I bothered to ask. A non-specific update to SL 10.6 would
not necessarily cause the item to disappear. An upgrade past it would.
Just like support for PPC coded applications disappears w/o Rosetta.

VIEWER WINDOW HAS GONE WHITE?

Ok - strange occurence. I was creating subclips from a clip file when I think my finger hit a button and suddenly the viewer window went white. When I hit the play button or space bar the clip image appeared and plays fine. But when I hit pause the viewer window goes white again. When double clicking on another clip the screen still appears white until I hit play. Not sure what I did, but would love to get back to normal mode. I would really appreciate any ideas or insight.

How to get Character Viewer to stay visible (esp. in Word for Mac)?

I'm asking this on behalf of a friend who has a 2013 13-inch (non-retina) MackBook Pro and uses it with an Apple Cinema Display. Since the upgrade to Mavericks the behaviour of the Character Viewer has changed, where it no longer 'sticks' (stays both active and on top) as a visible window when you switch applications: now it needs to be called up from within each application, and will be visible when working with that app.
He needs the Character Viewer open all the time and this change is inconvenient (he draws special characters from it constantly). But the main problem is that he mostly works in MS Word for Mac and as far as I can tell Microsoft have not updated Word to respect the behaviour Mavericks intends for Character Viewer: to stay visible while working. Instead, the Character Viewer window randomly closes. So, while hoping for an update from MS (but not holding breath since they provide their own inferior version of a glyph viewer in Word)) I have two questions:
1. Can anyone suggest a way, perhaps using Applescript or Automator (which I don't know how to use), to make the Character Viewer always stay open and visible while using any application? This would be the preferable solution, in effect restoring the behaviour seen before Mavericks.
Or
2. Can someone give us some guidance on how to make a custom keyboard shortcut in Word for Mac that we could assign to bring up the (OSX) Character Viewer, since the usual system shortcut for that (control-command-space) is not respected in Word. Or alternatively, an Applescript or Automator solution for this that would be available from within Word?

Did you try:
->System Preferences->Keyboard and check [ ] Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in menu bar
It closes when I switch desktops with spaces or open another App, but it displays when I go back to the Word window

Viewing layout has altered in latest iTunes, version 10.3.1.55

Since downloading the latest version of iTunes (10.3.1.55) the main viewing window has changed so that it only shows one vertical column of slightly larger 'app' icons down the lefthand side of the window. It is also the same when any other part of the 'store'.
Tried altering the setting in the pull-down viewing menu but none of the settings make any difference. Any ideas?

If you have 64bit Vista or Windows 7, look for the seperate download of iTunes for that further down the page.
Once installed, use the Apple Software Update under your Start Menu to fully update all Apple components.
Your content will remain on the drive in the Music > iTunes Folder, nothing is deleted.
You should be making backups of your content regularly, either through iTunes or via copying the iTunesFolder in your Music folder to a external drive.
Windows is notorious for having "other" issues that make it unstable, we as volunteers helping others can't always resolve those issues.

Just upgraded to Lion. The character viewer, which previously allowed one to see the entire unicode map for each font, no longer does this. It shows only certain kinds of symbols, not all of them. I am unhappy: I need to be able to access alternative letters and symbols, not just European vowels. Can someone help me?

I is still there, but a bit hidden.
1. Open the character viewer
2. Open the gear menu in the top left corner and select 'customize list...'
3. Go down to the bottom of the list 'Select categories...' and open 'Code Tables'.
4. Mark 'Unicode' for inclusion and click 'Done'.
Now open in the character viewer window the freshly added 'Unicode' category.
It is a bit cramped, but there it is: the old and trusted character viewer with all unicode categories and associated font variations.

(sorry for some reason I can't post links or images they have been stripped out)
However the answer, scars me a bit and I need someone to step me through it.
I have run SMBIOS viewer and spotted an odd looking character after the version 1 (looks like two
small square zeros) removed it from registry but this did not solve the issue.

Have you tried to reset WEI as I mentioned above? What is the result?
For HW info, we can also run msinfo32.exe to display the info.
we can also reset BIOS to the default setting to check the issue.

There could be a number of reasons, first thing to check is if you are clicking Command + or Command -. The Command 0 keystrokes restore Safari to the actual size. You can also reset Safari by Safari - Reset.

Make sure that you have no active I/O markers on the Timeline (use Option X keys to clear them).

Mail on my mac has no viewer window.

When I click on the application it does not come up. The bar at the top where the settings usually are is greyed out. Help?
I have a 2010 iMac running Mac OS Maverick. My mail was working fine up until about a week ago and hasnt been working since. I know I am still recieving emails because the noise is on, the application is open and responding. But there is no viewer window and as I said before the top bar where the settings are is all greyed out, unlike now i'm in safari and "Safari, File, Edit" etc are a vibrant black colour.
Please help!? I really need my emails to work.

I just called my provider and they tell me they've been inundated with questions about this problem - it seems it's a network issue - not a computer/phone problem.

10.5.8 update Mail has no viewer window OR plist file

Well, this is unexpected ... We're getting the dreaded no-viewer-window problem that Mail was having with earlier versions of Leopard. But now we're getting it just after the new point-8 update.
What's worse, it appears the plist file was NEVER installed. HOw is that even possible? I just went back thru a year of backups on Time Machine and no com.apple.mail.plist anywhere! And not in the Library/Preferences folder, that's for sure.
So:
1. What if I don't have com.apple.mail.plist and launching Mail doesn't create one?
2. How do I get the Mail back?

Mail never installs a plist file; they are created at launch time if one doesn't already exist. Without a plist file, Mail cannot run. They are located in Home/Library/Preferences, not in /Library/Preferences.
If you cannot find it, try this first:
Use Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities) to Repair Permissions. Then, download and install Cocktail. Launch the application, select Pilot from the menu, then Tasks, and run the utilities there. Restart your Mac and test Mail again.
If that's no help, proceed to to downloading and running the 10.5.8 Combo Update again. Then restart your Mac and try it again.
Post back with results.
