Charge an X220 with the power adapter of a T530?

I have an X220 (which is, hands-down, the best laptop I've ever owned). My wife recently bought a T530 for herself. The power adapters appear to be roughly the same, though the T530 has a significantly larger brick. Are the two adapters compatible, or if I find myself running low on power with only her adapter available would it fry my machine?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

you can use a 65, 90 and 135 watts adapter with the X220. The T530 you got have a 90 watts adapter. The adapter is designed to only supply the current (voltage is fixed) and therefore the power only as needed by the machine. It is not constantly supplying 65, 90 or 135 watts, these are the rated maximum power.

Using my macbook pro whole day with the power adapter , will it affect my battery? Please help

It doesn't affect the battery. You can use your MacBook Pro plugged in all the time without damaging the battery. You only have to be sure that you unplug it and run a battery cycle (drain the battery without letting the Mac turn off and charge it fully) at least once a month to keep the battery life.

  • What is the necessity of the AC power cord (with Mac Book Air)? When should it be used with the power adapter?

what is the necessity of the AC power cord (with the Mac book Air)? when should it be used?

Gary, you wouldn't believe some of the questions people ask on this site.
    Why are both cords necessary?
    They are not.
Other than the two reasons dominic23 sited are there any other reasons to use the AC power cord rather than the power adapter cord alone?
    No.

  • Is it better to use my Pro with the power adapter plugged in or out?

After charging my MBP's battery to 100%, which is better?
    - keep the power adapter plugged in to the laptop and resume using until you want to turn off the laptop
    OR
    - because the battery is already at 100%, unplug the adapter and resume using until you feel like you should charge the laptop again (maybe around 80%-90%)

If you are convenient to an AC outlet it's fine to use the adapter. However, keeping the AC adapter connected will not have an adverse affect on the battery. Once the battery has been fully charged it will stop charging. Recharge will begin once the battery's charge drops below 95%. LIthium-Ion/Polymer batteries do not exhibit memory effects. brah - you will have a fire and fire hazard !!!!! go look where the wire goes into the connector at the bend right up to the connector. i bet there already is black/ char colored inside of the clear insulation. i bet your short is right there like it usually is with the many other yoyo's. you can grab an exacto knife or sharp sewing scissors and cut it and then resplice it [remember to unplug it first grasshopper]. you can be really classy and solder it the right way, too. then clean it up with some nice 3M brand high quality black electrical tape. if you have tiger you can get into the system profiler and look under power and your 45 watt adapter should be putting in about 50 watts!! otherwise the adapter itself might be faulty. and if you are not sure then please please just throw it away and buy a new adapter. nothing is worth the real risk of a fire!!

  • Charging MacBook Air with older power adapter.

I have just bought MacBook Air. I still own the MacBook Pro 15' dated 2006. Can I use MacBook Pro's power adapter to charge safely MacBook Air?

Power adapters for Intel-based Apple portables are available in 45W, 60W, and 85W varieties. Although you should always use the proper wattage adapter for your Apple portable, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage without issue.
For instance If you have a MacBook (13-inch Late 2009) that normally uses a 60W adapter, you can also use an 85W adapter with that computer. You would not use a 45W adapter with that computer; it would not provide enough power for that MacBook. Using an adapter of higher wattage than the adapter that came with the computer will not cause the computer to charge more quickly or otherwise operate any differently than using the adapter that came with the computer.

  • 4th Gen. ipod. No longer charges from wall socket. Still can charge from computer. Wall power adapter and cord both work fine on other devices. Wall Why?

4th Generation ipod. Used to charge fine from wall socket (cord and USB adapter) and could also charge on the computer. Suddenly stopped charging from the wall. The same cord and adapter still work for my iphone, so there is not problem with either of them. What has changed? Why won't the ipod charge from the wall anymore? Is there anything I can do about it?

Thanks! It didn't actually work with the one I was using to charge the computer either. We had tried the computer cable with the power adapter, and it didn't  work to charge the ipod, though it does charge my iphone. Following your idea further,  I waited for my husband to get home from a trip and tried one of his extra cables he keeps in his backpack. That cable worked in with the USB  power adaptor. I had thought that because the cable I use on my computer charges my iphone through the USB power adapter or the computer, and that it charged the ipod through the computer that it was fully functional. Apparantly not.  Thanks again.

  • HT3131 how can i run in clamshell without the power adapter plugged in?

just what the question states..I dont want to have to always connect the power adapter. thanks

thanks this works well with the power adapter pluged into the mac, but I am looking for this exact setup without the need for the power to be supplied to the mac.
in otherwords, run it off the battery only.
I want to think that there is either a preferences setting, or function to be able to do this.
currently it appears that the mac will only run in the configuration with external perpherials with the power supply.

  • Auto shuts down - could it be the power adapter?

I'm having problems with my first generation macbook lately, it will auto shuts down (not sleep) with the power adapter still attached. And when it shuts down, the adapter still light up green. Im working without the battery, it is removed all the time cos it is dead already.
Could the problem lies with the power adapter? but it's still shows green light, that means there is still power running thru? I would like to test with another power adapter but i don have friends who have a mac. I don't want to spend money one another power adapter, without knowing the cause.
Is it possible to do a test on the power adpater? thanks!

A test you could try (rather than another adapter) is to put the "dead" battery back in and run it on AC. As Gregory said, without the battery, the slightest knock to the magsafe connecter may cause it to disconnect, even momentarily, thus you lose all power and your MB turns off. Hopefully the battery will have enough capacity to allow the MB to stay on (briefly) when the connecter is disconnected for that moment. Just an idea.
    Good luck.

  • Sleep and the Power Adapter...

I have been having iBook sleep problems and here is an example. working on ibook with power adapter in. i close the lid and it goes to sleep but wakes up and goes back to sleep then finally its asleep. ok i click on my mouse and it wakes up. another would be i manually go and click on the sleep option and while the lid is open it sleeps wakes sleeps wakes...finally sleeps. i close the lid click the mouse it wakes up... so i decided to reset the PMU and everything and did the same test and the same things happend. then for some reason i said let me try this with the power adapter unplugged. so i tried it and now the sleep function is perfect. i put it to sleep without the adapter and i press on the mouse and it stays asleep untilll i open it...weird but does anyone know what i could do to fix this when its plugged in? anyone else have this problem? thank you.
    iBook G4 14 inch. & Imac G4 15 Inch   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

    Hello Steven,
I think the reason this is happening is just because of the mouse that is connected to the ibook. I have an external mouse that I connect to mine. When the ibook is connected to the power adapter, it will wake up if the mouse is clicked, because it is getting a signal, and therefore wakes up, then goes back to sleep (when closed) because of the switch inside the computer telling it to sleep. This also happens if you connect something to a USB port. I don't know exactly why this doesn't happen when it is not connected to the power adapter (Maybe to conserve battery power?), all I know is that it just doesn't happen.

  • My Macbook air won't charge event though the light on the power adapter is red.

My Macbook is plugged in, and the light on the power adapter comes on. However, I have to jiggle it for it to say it's charging, and then it quits charging after a few seconds. Right now when I get it to charge, the percent on the battery increases like normal, but yesterday it said it was at 0% while charging or the percentage was decreasing. My power adapter is only a few months old, so I don't think that could be the problem.

1  You may need a new charger. Connections should be firm.

  • ZR65MC camcorder does not turn on with battery in position unless the power adapter is plugged in

Bought a ZR65MC camcorder in 2003.  Enjoyed it so much, but a couple of yrs. ago, the tape compartment stopped opening.  I just purchased another ZR65MC (used) on ebay in hopes that I could at least get the videos off & onto DVDs.  Also, we are planning trip to Yellowstone soon, so camera/camcorder will be nice.  Problem:  The used one does not turn on with a fully charged battery unless the power adapter is plugged in.  I assume battery is good because it turns on my older camera.  I do need backup batteries in both, but have not done this yet.  Please tell me I have not purchased a bad camera, maybe just doing something wrong?  Would have never purchased a used camera online, but did this time.  I have ordered a new battery BP-522 with wall charger.  It should arrive next week.  Any suggestions?

    Hi Sharon72064,
If the new battery won't power the camcorder without the Compact Power Adapter, unfortunately, it's likely that an internal component has malfunctioned.
