Charge dropping out on MacBook Pro

Hi all, I've got a problem with my MacBook Pro and could do with some advice. I bought it about a month ago and today I've noticed that it's started behaving a bit oddly - when it's plugged in to the mains, the LED display on the MagSafe adapter keeps switching from amber to green, then off, back to green and then to amber. This is coupled with the battery display up on the top right hand of the screen switching from showing the charging image, then showing it's on battery, then to 'Not charging' and then back again to the charging image. The power brick was starting to make some odd noises too, a very high-pitched whine and when I held it to my ear I could hear what sounded like a whirring sound.
I tried the SMC reset to no avail and eventually shut the computer down but kept it plugged in. It seemed to charge with no problems when it was shut down, but when the laptop's both charging and being used (internet, Word, etc) it flickers between charging and not charging.
What would you suggest, just taking it to an Apple store and seeing if getting a new adapter would make a difference?
Many thanks in advance.

Try a different outlet. If you get the same result with multiple outlets, then the problem isn't with the outlet.
Make sure your power adapter is not damaged. Check the cable for frays and other damage.
Also check to make sure you have the correct adapter. 13" Macbook Pros take the 55W adapter, 15" and 17"      Macbook Pros take the 85W adapter. If you have a lower voltage than what was included, charging can be      hindered.
Disconnect everything from your Macbook and shut it off. While it's off, press the battery indicator button. You should see the LEDs light up. If they are green, the battery is ok. If they flash amber/red, or any other pulse, there could be a problem with the battery. There is a support article on this.
There was also a problem identified with the new L-shaped power adapters. Install the MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.4 and try.
Cyclying the battery every 2 months or so is also helpful. Run the battery completely dead until the computer sleeps. Leave in this state for 4 hours or so. Fully charge the battery. This is also called calibrating the battery and helps expand its capacity!

Wifi keeps dropping out on MacBook Pro after installing Yosemite. This is not good.  Apparently, a lot of people are having this issue with Yosemite.  Any suggestions for my MacBook Pro?  It's bad enough that Yosemite looks so boring, but to have a major issue like constantly disconnecting from wifi is deplorable.
I plan to keep Mavericks on my iMac until this issue is resolved.

  • Video & Audio Drop Outs on Macbook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro with Version 10.7.3, 6 months old. Just recently when I play video, regardless of whether it's in iTunes, iMovie, or embedded in Keynote the video sticks, audio drops out for 1 -2 seconds or the shot freezes. What causes this and how is it fixed.

I apologize for the audio drop outs. I have sent you a private message to get account information from you so we can reprogram your boxes.

  • Wipe out my MacBook Pro

I want to wipe out my MacBook Pro so I can give it away.  Is there a guide or support on how to wipe it out so it is ready to go for a new user?

Which OS version did it originally come with?
You are showing that you are running Lion; if you purchased that at the app store, you must remove it as the license is not transferable. You will need to wipe your drive and use the original install disks to reinstall the original system.
Post back if it came with Lion for instructions on how to do it.

No, user caused accidents are not warranty coverage,  nor are spills, loss, theft etc.
all these user caused issues have no bearing on the warranty coverage.
    they are outside of same.
All laptop mfg. are identical in this nature  (same with your car too of course)

  • The screen resolution in 1920x1200 dropped on my MacBook Pro 17". Seems like I have not the same pixels. There are also vertical, thin lines on the screen. Makes the screen look milky. Anybody knows what's going on and how to fix it?

Take it to an Apple Store or other service provider for testing.

  • HT3053 How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

You can leave it plugged in all the time if you wish.
Once your Macbook is fully charged, it stops charging.
You can see this if you click on your apple logo, about this mac, more info, system report, power.
In any event, it is also a good idea to use your Macbook under it's own power to keep the battery in optimal condition.
As much as possible, try not to fully discharge your battery.  It could do more harm than good to your Macbook.
Good luck and enjoy your macbook

  • HELP! Adobe Production Premium on a decked out 2014 macbook pro 13 inch.

    Hello fine apple community.
I have a few questions that hopefully someone can help out with. I've tried to search high and low but had no luck.
I currently have an imac for my video editing needs. I have Adobe CS5 Production Premium. I would like to get a second computer to do some video stuff while i'm at work when I have downtime. Mostly editing in Premiere and some effects work in After Effects. Nothing major, just keying, green screen work, etc. I also do a lot of Photoshop.
With my uses listed above, I was looking at getting a decked out 13inch macbook pro. I was planning on updated the processor to - 2.8 dual core intel i7 processor. I was also going to upgrade the ram to 16GB. I don't think there's anything else I could upgrade with this model.
My question is, will the above macbook pro handle Premiere, after effects and photoshop?
I've tried to do some reading about dedicated GPU vs the integrated that is in the 13 inch macbook pros. I'm kind of confused on all that stuff and have never been able to find an answer if a macbook pro 13 inch will handle Adobe software with it's integrated processor?
Secondly, I feel like a pain asking this but when editing on premiere, I read that you should always have your video clips and your project saved to an external harddrive.... I'm guessing that's the external scratch disk? As it ill use of less processing power and ram than if you were editing on your internal harddrive? Is this correct? Should all video work be done with the project and video clips saved on an external harddrive?
Any other tips that I should be aware of when handling editing video?
    Thanks so much.

That's an odd problem. If it were me I think I'd do a full backup to an external drive and reinstall the OS from the Recovery partition. If an "in-place" install (meaning overwriting the existing system files) doesn't work, the next step would be to wipe the disk and install a fresh copy.

  • I dropped my 2009 MacBook Pro and it will no longer work; I need to re-install the OS software to hopefully restore it: what disk(s) do I use?

I dropped my 2009 MacBook Pro and it will no longer work; I need to re-install the OS software to hopefully restore it: what OS disk(s) do I use?  This may sound like a stupid question but I'm seeking to buy something inexpensive and need to know if a higher version (other than what was initially installed) will work.

    Bekah1996,
since you didn’t receive its original grey installation DVDs when you purchased it, you’ll need to contact Apple directly to purchase a replacement pair. (The grey installation discs aren’t available in the Apple stores.) Some Mid 2009 models originally came with 10.5.7 (Leopard), and some originally came with 10.6.0 or 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard). If yours had 10.5.7 installed, then you’ll probably receive a 10.5.7 set of grey discs from Apple. If you’d like to upgrade its OS to anything newer, then you’d also need to purchase the white retail Snow Leopard DVD — but you should wait to see what Apple sends you, since if they send you a 10.6.0 or 10.6.2 set, you wouldn’t need to purchase the white Snow Leopard disc.

  • Does the wall charger for a 17" macbook pro work on my new Macbook Pro?

I searched for docs and specs but can't seem to come with anything. Does the wall charger for a 17" macbook pro work on my new Macbook Pro?

Well, obviously you have NO faith in me or you wouldn't ask.
Go to the Apple Store online. Search for laptop power products and look for Apple's replacement AC adaptors. One is the 60 watt model for MacBooks. The other is the 85 watt adaptor - now read this very carefully because it's in smaller, lighter print - which says for 15" and 17" MacBook Pros. Will you take Apple's word?

  • What appears to be a battery or charging issue with my MacBook Pro

I'm hoping someone can help me troubleshoot this situation... I have one of the earlier models of the MacBook Pro (Silver keyboard) and am having issues with it. It normally sits in my office and is plugged in but I took it on a business trip recently and it started acting oddly. Suddenly it didn't seem to want to hold a charge. When I had it plugged in it showed as "not charging" in the menu bar but was still running properly. It seemed the battery couldn't get past maybe 12% charge. Anyway, once I returned home it wouldn't turn on at all. The light on the mag power adapter is not on but I did see a spark when I plugged it into a socket. The battery button flashes fast for a few seconds when I push it. I'm sort of assuming that it is either the battery or the charger but any thoughts on where to start? If it is the battery shouldn't it still power on when plugged in? I have left it for a full 24 hours "charging" and so far nothing. Any help appreciated!

I'm sure I need one anyway so I'll likely do that regardless... I'm wondering if anyone can confirm that the light on the mag adapter wouldn't be lit up if it's a battery issue so I can rule that out though

  • Video out from MacBook Pro to HDTV - no solution?

I've had this problem for over a year now and nobody has been able to help me solve it, not even the Apple guys. I need to get the video out from my MacBook Pro (Mini DisplayPort) to my HDTV which is an older model which only has Y/Pb/Pr analogue video inputs. Does anyone know which connectors I can use in order to get 1080i on my TV? My thoughts were MDP to VGA first so that we get an analogue signal, and then VGA to Y/Pb/Pr? Would this work? Why/why not? Please help!!!

i just brought Macbook pro(without retina display) on 15 june 2013 and when i switched it on the battery was 72 % charged and now the battery is charged to 62%, i used the charger that came with it and kept it for 6-7 hours on charging but it is not charged to 100% but why? also the green light is always on when i plug the charger with my mac book pro. Please tell me the meaning of Green light on power cord lid (mac book pro not charging or charging?) and also the other light if there like amber or any other colour.

    Hello Shailendras33,
Congratulations on your new MacBook Pro!  Thank you for providing all the information about what is going on with the charging issue.
Firstly, I found some information on page 11 of the MacBook Pro User Guide about what each color of the LED means on the Power Adapter:
When you first connect your power adapter to your MacBook Pro, an indicator light on the
MagSafe connector starts to glow.  An amber light indicates the battery is charging.  A green light indicates that the battery is fully charged.
You can find the MacBook Pro User Guide here (this is not for the latest MacBook Pro, but the information about the MagSafe adapter is true for the newest model):
    MacBook Pro User Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/macbook_pro_15inch_late_2011.pdf
It sounds like you are not getting the amber light indicating your computer is charging, and you are noticing that the battery level is depleting.  I recommend resetting your System Management Controller when something like this is occurring:
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
You can find the full article here:

  • Trying to figure out why MacBook Pro 1,1 shuts down randomly

    Hi-
I have a MacBook Pro that shuts down frequently, almost during every use. This has been happening over the last 2-3 months. It will be working fine, then the pointer freezes, then the screen will flicker, then it will shut off. The problem happens with the battery, plugged in and even plugged in without the battery. It has also happened while running off the WIndows XP Bootcamp partition.
I've looked around for some solutions but haven't fixed the problem yet. Last weekend I erased the hard drive (keeping the Windows partition) and reinstalled OS X 10.6.8 but the problem started again. My best guess is that it is a thermal issue beacuse the problems to seem to occur around 80C. So I've installed SMC Fan Control to try to keep the temperature low, but I haven't had it running for long with the new OS X install. I figured I'd check here to see if there could be any other issues.
If anyone has any insight, I'd graetly appreciate it. Thank you!
