I don't know what you mean by "on sector".
However, just to clarify a point. You are aware that the iPod 3rd gen cannot charge via a usb connection only firewire?

  • Fire wire - # and number of pins?

I want to add an external drive to my mac mini (non intel), and I plan to do this with a fire wire connection. I have found that fire wire cables are defined by the number of pins (4 or 6) an number IEEE-1396 or 1394. I believe I need to buy a cable, IEEE-1394 with 6 pins on each end. Can anyone confirm this belief before I buy the cable.
    Thank you for your comments.

    Hi,
I admit I have never heard of IEEE 1396 before you posted it here.
However a quick googling came up with quite some hits.
To my knowledge (and from the Google hits) it seems that IEEE 1396 is used to determine a 6-pin to 6-pin cable connection, whereas IEEE 1394 is used for a 6-pin to 4-pin cable connection.
4-pin ports are usually only used with external devices, that don't need/want to draw power from the Firewire cable (like Digital cameras and the like) or computers (like Notebooks) that don't provide power over the Firewire cable.
Nonetheless the only 'official' name for Firewire of any kind is IEEE 1394 with the addition of small letters like 'a' 'b' or 'c' to distinguish the differences in speed (Firewire 400; Firewire 800).
So look at the Firewire ports you want to connect with the cable to determine which cable you need.
Take care and thanks for the star.

  • Fire Wire and Power PC

    Hi everyone
Just bought a 500GB La Cie HDD from Apple store to use with Time Machine on my 2011 MBP with OS X Lion 10.7.2.
Several cables included: FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0. I tried them all, but all I get is this annoying message: "Lion does not support Power PC"
So, no power to the disk and no Time Machine. I find it a bit strange that Apple Store sells this HDD without a single word of warning that the device will not run under the newest OS X. Or, am I missing something ? Is there a way out of this ?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi m,
I don't recall exactly what the issue is/was, but there have been other similar posts about La Cie HDs not being compatible (that's difficult to believe these days). According to them, it's a firmware issue which they were going to fix (that was weeks if not months ago). Bottom line: contact La Cie tech support (and if you're still in the time window in which you can get a refund for it, I'd run, not walk, to get rid of the La Cie; any company whose chief advertising ploy is bragging about some supposedly famous designer who created the rectangle to house the HD has their priorities ALL mixed up, as evidenced by this firmware issue; ymmv).

  • Fire wire and Macbook Pros

I recently tried to use a Firewire to share files with a friend (my computer is from 2007 and hers is new). I discovered that she has no place where I can put the firewire, or at least the one that fits into mine.
My question is this: I am about to buy a new Macbook Pro as well, but I need to shift files on this old computer to the new one. How do I do that without a Firewire?
Also, if I want to buy a new firewire (if there is one) for this new computer which one do I use?
    Thank you.

Here the Firewire 6 pin connector on the left, and the 9 pin on the right (be sure to click on the image to get a full picture, this forum cuts off parts of

  • Satellite P100: USB/Fire-Wire ports not charging external device

When I plug my ipod into either my 4 pin fire-wire port or a USB port on my laptop (satellite P100) it fails to charge, even when plugged in to the mains/ A/C power. I think I have found where I need to go in 'control panel' but need help on how to allow my fire-wire and USB ports to give out power and charge my ipod when its connected.
Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

    Hi
The USB ports provide automatically the power. Usually every USB port provides about 500mA.
But please note; the notebook must run and the external USB device (iPod) must be recognized by Windows OS!
I dont know if the iPod was recognized by WinOS but I have read the many users have problems with the iPod installation on Windows OS. As far as I know the iTunes must be installed if you want to use the iPod.

  • Fire Wire Error Message:

If anybody has been following my posts, I have been wanting and needing a fire wire enclosure for large hard drives. I only have one of each. A Fire Wire enclosure and a 3.5 PATA drive. A Maxtor 160gb. I have other hard drives and they are smaller, and have issues. Fortunately OS 9 is able to mount these damaged drives.
I am very happy to have a fire wire enclousre and also a new hard drive for my files. =] =] And I still have like a bunch of files to organize but the most important thing right now is to get all of these files off of three messed up hard drives.
I have one hard drive connected to a USB enclosure and the new 160gb one is connected to the Fire Wire enclosure. (It also has a USB 2.0 port but I am connecting it to Fire Wire) and I am running OS 9 while operating all the external hard drives.
As for the fire wire enclosure: I get an error message:
A FireWire disk has stopped responding. The problem must be corrected to prevent damaging the disk's contents.
Please check all FireWIre connections. If you added, removed, or turned on a FireWire device on or off, try undoing what you did.
And so I turn off the drive and turn it back on. It acts like nothing has happened to it. But certainly something bad is happening!!! =S
Also it has done this in the middle of transferring files and then I turn it off and on and then it resumes moving THE SAME file!!!!!!! =S
    ????????????????

Could the problem have been the USB-only enclosures??????? I have tried to get it to work a few minutes ago and it would not turn on. I gave up on it and I disconnected it. I am moving files from the damaged hard drives onto that imac's internal hard drive, and then onto the new hard drive ... all using the same fire wire enclosure. I have one so far and not two... and that is kinda frustrating. =S }=S }=S
Even though I have to keep switching hard drives with one fire wire enclosure, the fire wire enclosure transfer speed is now FAST!!!!!!!!
    =]

  • Need to "restore/over write" data from ex Fire Wire to internal drive

Let me say up-front that I know little about computers. I backed up my internal drive to my external Fire Wire, as I was going to reinstall Tiger (don't ask me why. It seemed a good idea at the time). Without much thought I checked the clean/erase installation box. (using the Backup 3 download from .mac)
So, when I tried to restore my data, the new install has no record of ever backing up to my Fire Wire, and so won't accept a "Restore" command.
Is there any way I can get my start up drive to rewrite itself from my Fire Wire, or is it (A) a lost cause, or (B) The kind of thing that has to go to the shop?

    Mr Hamilton:
I'm plugged into a Firewire port (I think. Someone else set it up for me. I'll have my friend verify when I see him this week.)
    Mr Majordadusma:
I bought my computer four years ago, around this time of year. "About this Mac" says:
    1 Ghz PowerPC G4
    1MB L3 cache
    1.25 GB DDR SDRAM
    Startup Disk Untitled
    Machine Model: PowerMac3.6
    Boot ROM Version: 4.6.0f1
My External hard drive is listed under "ATA Bus". It's an IBM-1C35L.... there are more letters and numbers, but in case it's the serial number, I'm stopping here. In case they tell the model number, I'm hoping this is enough info to identify. The capasidy is 57.27 GB, with 44.1 GB available.
    File System: Journeled HFS +
Don't know if this is too much info or not enough.
I will try the things you suggested (or, rather, get my friend to try as I'm pretty much afraid to touch my machine. When I backed-up, my iTunes should have had my music and video library, but even though my games and some other backed-up stuff is there, we haven't been able to bring up my Library's--they come up blank--I'm afraid that I mayhave done something to screw that up, so am leery of messing with my computer). If they do not work, I'll report it back here.
I'll also check back here later, in case my G4 model doesn't allow me to boot from an external drive.

  • Is fire wire dead?

I have an older Mac - 1 fire wire port, 0 Thunderbolt.  I'm looking to add a new external hard drive.  I have found the LaCie Quadra drive.  It has fire wire and USB 3.0 interface ports.  I don't need to spend the big bucks for a new Mac.  So, the LaCie seems to be the answer.  If (it's only a matter of time) I buy a new Mac, I should be able to use the USB 3 connection.  Any thoughts?  Thanks

    Hi there tadg47,
All new Macs in the store right now have USB 3 and Thunderbolt ports standard. If you do buy another iMac in the future, you should be able to use your USB 3 drive without any issues. You would also have the option of using Thunderbolt via a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, but the down side there is that you will be limited to FireWire speeds (400 or 800 Mbs) versus the 5 Gbs with USB 3. I would recommend reviewing the FAQ articles below for more information.

  • IPod wont sync over fire wire

I have a 30gb Photo iPod and a 1.42 MHZ G4 mac mini. I plugged in the iPod over fire wire and then the iPod loaded the first time. The second time i plugged it in the iPod froze and would so did my computer until i unplugged it by force. Then i plugged it in using the USB 2.0 cable and it mounted perfectly. This is the only computer in my house with USB 2.0 and being there is only 2 USB slots, one for my keyboard and one for my mouse, I do not have the slots to spare. I have rebooted the computer and the ipod. The same thing happens when i plug it in over firewire, both freeze. I have iTunes 4.9 and iPod version 1.2.

I would recommend updating iTunes to 5.0. I've had issues in the past where my iPod was running newer software than iTunes and it caused issues.

  • Video capture stops when connected to FCP using fire wire

Captured video using Sony VX2000 using 48 khz and 16 bit audio stereo mode. Using Sony Premium miniDV tapes.
Video plays back fine when not connected via firewire to G4 dual 867 with 2 GB Ram.
Using default capture preset of 48 khz 16 bit, connect fire wire and video capture randomly stops stating it has lost connection or is missing capture data. If I switch to just plain capture using non controllable device, I have the same issue except the tape keeps playing but FCP stops capturing.
Tried other tapes and no problem.
Tried other fire wire cable and no problem.
I am having problems only on this tape and when connected.
When not connected it plays back on the camera with no stopping.

    To answer your questions--
Dumping preferences usually does not cause problems. More likely you updated some part of your system or are having other hardware issues.
No updates or hardware issues. The original problem (discussed in another thread) was one where the video is skewed inward on the lower right corner. Apple instructed me to dump the preferences and start from scratch. That I did and now I am experiencing problems I did not have before. If it is hardware problems, then I guess it is just coincidental that FCP is just now presenting problems. However, the other problems I am having are software related and does not involve the camera.
What software versions of FCP, OSX and QT are you running and have you updated any of them recently?
    FCP version-5.1.2
    OSX-10.4.8
    QT-7.1.3
Is there anything special about the 'difficult' tape?
    No.
    Did you record it?
    Yes
Was it the last of a bunch?
Not sure. I buy bulk so this was one in a box of 5 that is was in a case of 50 boxes.
Are you using the same camera as the playback device?
    Yes
Does it work if you use another computer?
Not sure what you mean. I have only one MAC G4.
Was it recorded using another camera in a non-DV format?
No. Playback is through same camera is was recorded on.

  • 5th gen 80g only charges with fire wire

Hi my 80 gig ipod did not work after not charging for a long time (it just said battery to low please wait then a blank screen) so i put a new battery in it came on all good but when i plugged it in my mac nothing happened (did not sync or charge) so i tried it in in a docking bay that charges but it did not charge but music came out of speakers so i reset it still nothing then i thought i try a different cable to mac (a old one a fire wire with usb as well) it worked with both connected so i restored it but it only works with both plugged in if i unplug the fire wire it still seen by my itunes by the usb and syncs but if i just plug the usb in nothing (on the same cable) until i plug the fire wire in and itunes opens

I don't have the internet at the moment (and won't do for a while) so upgrading isn't an option - and you don't get a disc with the iTUnes software with video ipods it seems, so I can't upgrade my software that way. I just want to use my new ipod as soon as possible and was expecting to just be able to plug it into my computer and download without any problems.

Look the dock connector on your iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corred contacts, foreign material and cracked/broken plastic.
    Try:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears..

  • HP Pavilion Elite m9040n Desktop and Fire Wire 1394

I have the above mentioned Desktop. It has a 1394 plugin on the front of case. Does the Pavilion come with all the software to make fire wire work? I backed up my hard drive onto an Toshiba external disk with a USB cable the other day and it took 6 hours. Isn't fire wire suppost to transfer data faster than a USB cable? Is there any special things I need to know when buying fire wire 1394.
I was looking on the internet the other day and they showed fire wire with 4 and 6 pins. Looking into the hole on my computer it only looks like 3 pins?
    Thanks

    Rick, welcome to the forum.
There is no software necessary for Firewire (IEEE 1394a).  The driver is installed with the OS.
Here is the Motherboard Specifictions page for the computer.  It only shows that there is a Firewire (IEEE 1394a) port (# 11) in the Back I/O ports.
Here is an article that shows the comparison of speed of Firewire vs USB.  Firewire was developed by Apple.
