Charger caught on fire

Anyone have their charger lead catch on fire?

It is pretty unusual for a charger to catch on fire. You should contact Apple about this, as it is a potential safety issue. Apple has always taken the safety of their customers very seriously. Use the appropriate phone number on this page or carry the charger and iPod in to an Apple retail store or service provider.
No guarantee what they will do about it, but you can be sure they want to hear what you have to say.

MY POWERBOOK'S GENUINE APPLE CHARGER CAUGHT ON FIRE!!
    Has anyone elses done similar?
It burnt the floor and if unattended could have burned down the whole house! I'm shocked that this could have happened. Apple USUALLY have really high quality products. Its making me wonder if I should buy the new macbook or not. (The powerbook is in need of replacement anyway....so old!) I tried to call that apple number 133 622 but the first thing they ask for is the serial,...which I don't have in front of me at the moment....so I decided to come here. Is that the only number they have for support?

I'm 95% sure Apple would have sent you a replacement AC adapter without charge or protest if you had gone to Apple in the first place. Complaining here does no one any good, frankly; those adapters were on the market for six or seven years, and the number of failures like yours has been very low. Not negligible, certainly, but very low. There were several modifications to the design and construction of Powerbook AC adapters during those years, all of which made them more robust. There have been additional improvements since then in the adapters sold with MacBooks and MacBook Pros. Older Powerbook G4s and the least durable adapters that were sold with them in their early years are passing out of use, and the time for spreading alarms about them has also passed. Apple still addresses occasional serious failures like yours on a case-by-case basis, warranty or no warranty. We occasionally hear about them here.

  • IPhone charger caught on fire

  • My charger almost caught on fire yesterday !!

Well fortunately I got ahold of a long lost macbook 60wat charger and my MacBook should be using a 85watt charger but the good part is that is that the 60 watt works fine with the macbook pro but what is the deal with these chargers Apple should have recalled them literally if I have left the charger plugged in much longer it probably would have short circuited and caught on fire !!!
but since the 60 watt is working fine do you think there will be any problems in the future with me using the charger even though it should be used with a macbook not a macbook pro ???
    Thanks !!!
(hopefully Mac will fix the images in the forums soon !!!)

actually it does I'm running the macbook pro without the battery right now and it works fine and unfortunately I can't get a new charger because my apple care expired
Sure you can. Buy one. using a 60W power supply for something that needs a 85W power supply means you can run or charge but not both at once. So just buy the proper device.

  • Magsafe caught on fire!

    hey everyone...
when using my macbook pro today my magsafe caught on fire and melted. there was a bright flame and lots of smoke. the smell was terrible. i quickly pulled the cord from my computer and disconnected it from the wall.
I was lucky that it happened when i was working on the computer as it could have been much worse.
This is my first magsafe and i am very gentle with it. I don't travel with my macbook pro at all.

I am in the process of talking to apple now.
    kane, australia

This has been known to happen in extreme rare cases. Apple will happily replace your power adapter.
Just to be on the safe side, I get them to run some diagnostics on your system to make sure nothing was harmed as your laptop is succeptible to voltage spikes. Hard drives are notorious for popping up with bad sectors have even low quality power supplies.
Last thing you want is something to show up down the line in your hardware that translates to possibly losing all your data.
Personally, there would be no way I would happlessly continue using my laptop if that had happened without a thorough analysis that all my hardware was prim and proper.
Aren't you glad they developed the magsafe technology? Just yank the cable and "pop," off it comes

  • My verizon charger caught fire. Now what?

Its a Verizon brand portable charger, bought two months ago at a Verizon store. Had it plugged in only a few hours, when suddenly a cloud of brown smoke and a burning smell burst out.  Thank god I was sitting right there.  I took it right back to the store, and the clerk confirmed he smelled smoke. But they're only offering me a partial credit, and instead of returning it to Verizon to find out why it caught fire, they just threw it out (I got it back).  Now what?  Only two months old, only charging a few hours, and it catches fire?!
    Model B141000

They have a 1-year warranty on chargers, but there can't be any physical damage.  There's no way to differentiate if you were careless or if it was a defect.  Go with the partial credit or just buy a new one for full price somewhere else.

  • Macbook charger caught fire in bed!

My boyfriend was using his macbook pro (less than a year old) in bed next to me while plugged into the charger and out of nowhere the cord began to sizzle with sparks, followed by small flame and smoke. He immediately unplugged the charger from the wall, and then from the computer and we were left with a burning smell and a black burn hole in the side of the cord. The computer seems to be working ok and we are both thankful that we were awake to stop the fire before it destroyed our home. We made an appointment with a mac genius for tomorrow. This has got to be something apple will replace for free, right? Has this happened to anyone else on here? There are lots of blog posts from other people who have had a similar experience. <edited by host>

MagSafe chargers get warm. Very warm.
But to get to the point where it catches fire is not a good thing.
Apple does not have to replace anything for "free." They well might--they should!--but they are under no obligation to do so, especially if you're past your warranty. I'd check on that first! In your case, less than a year, it should be replaced.
My question is: what was he doing with the MacBook in bed? Anything other than an electric blanket in something with things like flammable cotton sheets doesn't strike me as a good idea. (But that's just me.)
Best of luck in any case--
    Doc

  • IPhone charger caught fire!

    Hi all,
I plugged my new (3 month old) charger into the wall at work yesterday, when I switched it on there was a flash, a pop followed by flames coming from it.
The office circuit breakers tripped which stopped the fire. But obviously now need to get a new one and sort out the problem so that no one else has a problem... What would have happened if it had been at home in the middle of the night? I shudder to think!
Has anyone heard of this happening before? What's the best course of action? Is there a dedicated complaints department at Apples London HQ?
    Thanks,
    Binksieboy

Get a power strip surge protector. This not only allows more outlets but also protects them further than a regular outlet. You may only need to get a new charger.

  • Charger catching on fire?

I tried plugging my charger into its usual outlet yesterday and it caught fire. Has this happened to anyone else? What should I do? (obviously the charger no longer works...).

Yeah, it caught fire caught fire. It singed the wall and burned/melted part of the carpet (I never knew carpet could melt. How exactly do I call them? I tried finding a phone number but i spent half an hour searching the site and only found one. When I called it, the lady I got sounded surprised and put me through to "tech support". The 10 minute wait time quoted to me turned into 15 and then 20. I had guests over so I hung up. Is there another number I should try.

  • My charger set on fire...

A problem which has appeared with many of the Iphone 5 chargers is that the rubber around the cable has a tendency to crinkle up and tear. Well basically about 20 minutes ago I thought I could smell smoke coming from the computer, but there was a wood fire in the living room so I thought nothing of it, but then I thought I could see the smoke so I stood up and looked around the computer and still nothing, then remembering my charger had a tear in it I glanced over and lo and behold... it was on fire.
Obviously I am unhappy at the fact I have no charger and now no working phone but I am more than unhappy at the fact when I sleep my charger rests on my bed so ulitimatly if it caught fire during the night I could have easily died.
What can I do about this guys?
    Thanks a lot guys

That sounds like something that would be covered by warranty, contact Apple either by phone or by taking it to an Apple Store. I would expect them to replace it for you.
As far as your concerns go, your phone IS an electrical device and as such, if something goes wrong, it can have bad side effects. As you found out.
Also, should you see something questionable (like the "crinkling" you describe seeing) quit using it and contact Apple.
    Good luck.

  • My charger started on fire? I wasn't even using my phone while charging it.

My charger just started on fire and I wasn't even using my phone while it was charging.

If you do not live near an apple retail store, you should call applecare as soon as possible.  They may request photos of the area after the incident.

  • Cinema display 30" power plug caught on fire

    Hi everyone,
I have a 30" Apple Cinema display (A1083) purchased in 2008. Recently, it's power cable/wire came slightly unplugged from the 150w power supply while the monitor was on. The wire was still plugged in, but it was at a fairly severe angle. Spontaneously, sparks flew between the power supply and power cable/wire and fire shot out of the power supply melting the plastic around the cable. Needless to say but the monitor went dead at that moment.
I had another power supply laying around so I plugged that in to see if the power cable/wire would still work. The monitor came on for a while but then more sparks and the monitor went dead.
Apple no longer makes this monitor and apple care is expired (of course). Therefore, I figured I would fix this myself. By some miracle I found the entire set of cables on eBay and purchased them.
    My question is:
Should I replace the entire set of cables, which would involve opening up the monitor? Or, should I just replace the power cable/wire at the end which would involve some soldering, etc.
Also, are there any tips, directions, pointers that anyone has for doing any of this? I found one guy online who opened up the case but that is a risky move.http://www.eliteweblabs.com/recent/cinema-display-cable-fix/
I'm upset my beautiful monitor isn't working and really need some help getting it back, if possible. What do you guys think?

  • Hp Pavilion dv7 2030 ea - overheated and stop working. Charger cable in fire

I have this notebook that almost set my house in fire.
What is wrong with HP?? How COME THEY ARE HAVING THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICES? After I send a couple of complains about how lucky I was to be at home when the cable started to burn, nobody ever replayed.
With all do respect, HP is the lowest brand. Not only for the quality of the products but most of all for the Customer service. There is no such a thing.
I have posted some pictures on the internet - f.book. Check them out and watch out. This is serious!!

    Welcome to the new HP!
It seems that the entire dv7 line has overheating problems.  The support people I have talked with are worthless for properly diagnosing the problem.  Apparently if a machine shuts down due to excessive heating there is no error / log message to determine that overheating is actually the problem.
With as many complaints s they have had you would think they would design in a solution, but after receiving my new dv7-5000 I have determined that HP no longer has qualified designers of any kind.
I especially like the cute little design touches, all the icons that go to the ports are located on the inderside of the case, That does a lot of good!
By default the function keys are "reversed" .  To use F1 you have to use a double keystroke: Fn & F1.  Not only that the Fn is not a toggle.  There is a little fix, you can go into the BIOS and reverse it back to normal behavour.
Some keys, like the caplock & wireless key have a little light indicator, but the Num Lock key does NOT.
These are just a few complaints....
If they can;t get these things right how can we expect them to fix an overheating problem, slow disk drives, lack of USB3, external ports without proper seperation between connectors, or screw down connections.
