Charger overheating

My Macbook pro retina,
My charger started to get really hot, so I went to the apple store they replace it and give me another charger. Now this one gets hot but also the madsafe2 conector gets hot as well and the other didn't.

Reset SMC.

Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, contact Apple again.
It is possible that the replacement power adapter can be also defective.
Best.

  • MacBook Pro charger overheating.

MacBook Pro charger overheating replaced it and new one is overheating also don't know if its the charger causing the the problem.

Yikes!  I assume you mean that thing some people use to smooth out their clothes?
Are you still under warranty?  I would take it in to make sure it's not something on the computer side.

  • Recurrent warped topcase / bubbles / charger overheated - opinions?!

    Hi all,
Just thought I'd pass this by everyone to get some feedback...
I purchased my MacBook (the discontinued white one) last November. Quite soon afterwards, a hairline crack appeared on the USB and the topcase/bottom started to warp. I was told it was accidental damage (although it had literally sat on my desk), but it was half-repaired in February... the bottom case was left.
Barely a few weeks later, the problem recurred. I was really busy with finals/moving at the time so didn't do anything about it.
More recently, bubbles (heat?) appeared on the bottom of my computer and the bottom casing started to detach. The charger started to become unreliable and the little magnetic connector could get VERY hot.
    Now it's stopped working altogether.
I'm a bit peeved considering how much these things cost and am going into an iStore tomorrow (within one year warranty, have AppleCare)... should I face any problems trying to get all of this sorted, especially now the computer's been discontinued?
    Any feedback appreciated!!!

They look fine; I've cleaned the port as best I can and the hooks look ready to hook, which is why I assumed it had completely overheated. I could barely touch it at times!

  • Charger Overheating, and then not working!!

Alright, here is a summary of the issue (if you would like more details please read the rest):  A few hours ago the charger totally stopped working.  After numerous attempts to find out whats wrong, I decided to let the charger cool and plug it back in the electrical plug.  When I plugged it back in, it started overheating like crazy (I really mean crazy---within 10mins) and within a few mins after the charger totally stopped working again.
    Below are more detais:
Since February, the charger has been mostly plugged in to a surge protector. When the laptop is fully charged, I would disconnect the charger from the laptop (but the charger would still be plugged in to the electrical source). I would only charge it when the battery life is 20% or below.
Today (just a few hours ago actually), the charger randomly stopped working. I disconnected it from the laptop and reconnected it a few times, and it wouldn't work at all. Then I removed the charger from the electrical plug and plugged it in the plug. It worked, and I thought it was a small problem. BUT, within 2 minutes, the charger stopped working once again. I did the same thing---unplugging the charger from the electrical source and plugging it back in, and it worked (but only this time it stopped working much earlier than the first time). Also, just a note, when I touched the charger, it was really hot and there was some sort of smell (not like fumes, but close). I haven't touched the charger for a month at least so it might have been this hot for a while now. And after continuously removing the charger and plugging it back in the electrical plug, I started hearing a small noise coming out from the charger.
I am seriously ******, I just bought this laptop 10 months ago and I'm worried that its a problem with the laptop.

Well the constant overheating most likely caused permanent damage then. As it already sparked and smoked it took serious damage while it is not if that was due to prior damage or working on the plug. You should rma it. None the less using it under load while you saw it overheating might theoretically voided your warranty.

  • My iPod touch 64 GB doesn't charge or show up on iTunes, because the charger overheated it. How can I fix this problem? I tried restoring too and putting it into DFU mode but it doesn't work.

    Thanks.

    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Macbook Battery Charger Overheating

Hey y'all, my charger for my black macbook overheats when I use it and it smells like something is burning inside. any ideas what may be causing this? Will it damage my computer?

i would SERIOUSLY recommend you stop using it and give apple support a call, that can probably mess with your computer because if your charger is not working properly the circuit that keeps the voltage in a regular level for a computer might be affected and give your computer a high voltage and it could be the end of your laptop.

  • C7 Freezing/Not charging/Overheating

Ive had my C7 for about 8 months and for the last 3 weeks it has been a nightmare.
The touchscreen constantly freezes. Ive tried re-installing the software, restoring it etc but to no avail. It would sporadically work after removing the battery and waiting for a few minutes but since yesterday it seems to have permanently frozen.
I have attempted to charge it but it just heats up. You could quite happily fry eggs on it.
Unfortunately I bought in abraod so luckily for Nokia it is not covered by UK warranty.

  • My iPad mini makes chargers burn to the touch.

I have an iPad mini and my charger overheated and died. I have borrowed other people's chargers in the mean time but they get very very hot to the touch when I plug it into my iPad. What shall I do?

My iPad 3 charger will get quite warm at times when I am charging my iPad, but not like you are describing. I would recommend taking the iPad to an Apple Store for evaluation.
Your iPad charger should never get "very, very" hot. That is not normal.

  • I just ordered the white 32gb 4G iPad from ATT

Will i have all  three issues (charging, overheating and now wi-fi) i heard of thus far? Should i cancel the order if these are hardware issues?

The smart cases are really nice, though you'll need to purchase a separate cover for the back if you want to protect it.  I highly recommend Bear Motion cases though, if you're looking for a full portfolio type case.

My wife has one for her iPad 2, and it is a very nice case for the price.  She went with the smart cover, so I stole it for my new iPad, and it works great.  And they have great customer service too.  Anyway, just my opinion.  There's a thread floating around here somewhere on new iPad cases.

  • My iPhone 5 overheated yesterday and now it won't turn on. When I plug it to charge it only flashes the Apple logo. I've restored my device on iTunes but it's still not turning on. Help!

So I charged my phone yesterday but it didn't seem to get charged because the battery percentage went lower instead of higher after I plugged out my phone. Then the battery percentage subsequently got lower even faster, jumping from 28% to 15% within ~a minute. It was very hot too, so maybe overheating was the problem. Then I tried charging my phone again after leaving it to cool but it won't charge and keeps flashing the Apple logo.
    I've tried to no use:
    1. pressing the Power button and Home button together for a long time
    2. restoring my device (on iTunes it says that my phone's updated, but it still won't turn on)
Should I just send my phone to Apple for them to fix it or for a replacement?

I'm sorry, it seems that the problem is that my phone WON'T restore. I just tried restoring again and it keeps giving me the 2001 error. Help.

  • Overheating, charging new ipad

Could the overheating and terribly-long charging of new ipad (and the apparent non-pervasiveness among new owners) be related to different screen manufacturers (i.e., samsung, sharp, LG...)?

  • Still Having Problem with Battery Overheating with Car Dock/Charger when using Maps/Navigation

I'm having a problem with the battery overheating when using Google Navigation in the OEM Samsung car dock and car charger.  On a trip last weekend, I started off with a fully charged battery (because posts on other sites have complained that the Charge cannot keep up with the power draw of the Google nav app while using the car charger).  About an hour into my trip, I got a message that the battery was overheating and to unplug the charger which I did.  I then had to contend with the screen going out because it was running on the battery.  I let the phone discharge to about 70% then tried the car charger again.  Within a few minutes, I got the same overheating message.  It was not an overly hot day and the car A/C was set at 68 degrees.
This morning (with the battery at about 85%) I tried to use the Navigation without the car dock while charging and got the same results...the phone battery overheated and I had to unplug the charger. The battery temperature reached 116 degrees. (also, the battery level was also dropping while using the Maps or Nav application even though it was hooked up to the car charger).
I'm very disappointed with this situation since I was hoping I could replace my old Garmin GPS with the Charge.  But between the phone dimming the screen while running on battery, and having a depleted battery in the phone at the end of the trip, its just not a viable option.  I really like this phone, but I'm running against the "return" clock.
    Any ideas?
Could this be a software problem that will be corrected by an update in the future?
fyi:  other Charge problems in the last 5 days:
    - dropping audio on calls to other Verizon phones.
    - use of camera flash causing the phone to reboot.
(I do have the 'class 4' 32gb card in my Charge)
    Thanks in advance,
    Rich

    Jerry:
Yes, the phone is charging while in the car dock.  I confirmed it both under the "about phone-status-battery status" menu and by my battery widget.  By watching the battery widget, I also noticed that the voltage steadily increased over the ride home.  It started at about 3.90 volts and ended at 4.02 volts.  I don't know if that is significant.  This time the battery did not overheat.  The Max temp was 110 degrees, but no notice to disconnect came up.  This might be because the sun was behind me on the drive home rather than beating down on the dash like it was this weeked.
I've ordered a cheap universal dock from Amazon for about $15.00 which clips onto the a/c vent.  I want to see if this keeps the temperature down.  If this works, I can still return the fancy-schmantzy Samsung OEM car dock. (The car-dock interface wasn't that impressive anyway).
Please let me know if the volt change means anything.
And thanks again for your help!
    Rich
