Charger stops working, must unplug/"replug" cord to make it work again

I've got a MBP unibody- about 2 months old. Not happy with battery life around two hours (yes, with settings for better battery life), but now the charger's acting up!
Sitting still, working on laptop, suddenly I'll see the icon change to "using battery", even though it's been plugged in for hours. This has also happened when not working- this morning, it was in deep sleep because the battery had run all the way down overnight, even though it was plugged in.
Simply detaching/reattaching the magsafe adapter does nothing- I have to either unplug and replug the adapter from the surge protector, or detach/reattach the cord from the "brick" to get it to work again.
Anyone else seeing this? It's a 45-minute drive to an Apple Store, so I'm asking here first...

You might try resetting the SMC:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
If that doesn't cure the problem, it's possible you have a bad power adaptor--it sounds like the power adaptor is not being recognized and the battery may not be getting fully charged. You might also want to look at this article on troubleshooting mag safe adaptors:

Good luck!

  • Wifi iPad 3 charger stopped working after updating to iOS 6, help!

Wifi iPad 3 charger stopped working after updating to iOS 6.  The little iPhone charger charges it very very slowly, but the charger gets really hot after a while.  I restored it and everything works but the charger.  It's only a few months old, should I try a new iPad wall charger block?

    Hi,
I did this after reading the forums and it made no difference. it has actually charged from 14% to 67% but thats taken over 12 hours.
Will monitor it and if no joy will go to a apple store
    Thanks

  • My charger stopped working.

My laptop's charger stopped charging periodically so I went to get it checked out.  They told me the Charger port was damaged and needed to be changed.  I accepted and they changed it and I finally took it home.  After a few days my original charger stopped working and I took my laptop back to the store where they had supposedly fixed it and told me that the charger was now the problem and should buy a new one.  I finally bought a new original one and now it has stopped working again.  What do I do? I don't know what the source of the problem is.  I also tried it in a new power source and the problem persisted.

What model MBP do you have?
An new Apple charger comes with a warranty.  If it has failed, you should receive a replacement.
Have you tried a SMC reset?

  • MacBook pro charger stopped working

    I have a lightly used n
MacBook pro 13 inch that stopped charging today. The battery health yesterday was at 95%. The green light on the plug end of the charger is not on. Could ths 80 dollar charge already have quit working?

Thanks. I was afraid of that. I tried several plugs.  It seems like everything we own from apple starts breaking down just after AppleCare ends. Our apple store is really slow in northern virginia. Had an appointment this Afternoon on a iphone5 that won't charge anymore and it still took more than an hour. Get home only to find my Mac charger stopped working today one month after the warranty expired.

  • I was on my mac when my charger stopped working. When I turned on my laptop again it was acting weird. Saying I needed to give permission for certain applications? Help!

I was about to go on my computer as it was charging. My charger stopped working (it made a popping sound) and when i turned my computer on, it was acting a little strangely. The date was wrong and I had to "allow" or "deny" several applications. Why did this happen?

    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Date & Time
Select the Time Zone tab in the preference pane that opens and check that the time zone matches your location. Then select the Date & Time tab. Check that the data and time shown (including the year) are correct, and correct them if not.
    Check the box marked
              Set date and time automatically
if it's not already checked, and select one of the Apple time servers from the menu next to it.

  • Charger stopped working with iPod

This is not a question. This is an answer to why my iPod charger stopped working, and I hope I can help someone out there experiaincing this issue. Instead of going through all the hassle of changing cables, sources, and taking it in to the apple store, look in your iPod lightning connector slot and see if any lent from your pocket has accumulated over time. Once I cleared it out with a needle (this obviously could damage your lightning port, so be careful, and dont be stupid) it charged again without issue.

I attempted that as my first, however there was so much lent smashed and settled in there that compressed air didnt work for me. That is a good first option though.

  • So confused my card reader has stopped working again

My card reader has stopped working again. It's done this before and I just uninstalled it and then downloaded and installed the Ricoh Driver from Toshiba's website and that fixed it right up.
This time though it's not working. Here's the confusing part. When I download the Ricoh Driver and Open it it shows it's extracting the Ricoh Card Reader Driver which is good. Then the next screen says Welcome to the Logix Pro 500 Simulator Setup Wizard.
Now Logix Pro is my dh's PLC/electrical program. Why are these getting crossed over? What can I do to fix my reader?
I have the A305-S6905 with Vista.
    Thanks!

Never mind! I figured it out. I was trying to download it with Firefox. I tried again using Internet Explorer and it works perfectly now!
    Thank goodness!

  • Samba stopped working again after most recent security update

This is not the first time that Samba has stopped working for me after applying an update to Mac OS X.
I installed an update that 'Software Update' offered to me a day or two ago, and it has caused Samba to stop working again. I can't access the disks on my Powermac from any of my PCs (WinXP and Vista) again.
I tried turning the firewall off. I tried turning SMB file sharing off and turning it back on. I tried disabling and enabling each of the users for SMB access. Still doesn't work.
Under 'Sharing', I have 'File Sharing' enabled. Under its 'Options', I have 'Share files and folders using AFP' and 'Share files and folders using SMB' both enabled. I have my account enabled under 'Share files and folders using SMB'. I also tried disabling it and enabling it. Under Network setup, I have location 'Home' selected, because of previous problems with Samba not working if 'Automatic' was selected.
    Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Chris Shaker

    Hello King Cutway
If you are having issues with the functions keys, then check the settings in System Preferences > Keyboard and look to see if Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys is unchecked so you can use it properly.

  • Must unplug/replug monitor to work

    Hi,
Had my 23" Cinema HD monitor for some months now and have not had any problems until now.
It won't come on when I turn my Power Mac on. I have to unplug either the AC or DC cord from the power adapter and then plug it in again for the display to come on? If I turn the display off, I need to do this again. It also switches itself off when a screensaver kicks in or sometimes when I change the brightness level.
Any one shed any light on this please? Sounds like the power adapter is playing up. I've tried plugging the monitor into a PC too with similar results, so I don't think it's the graphics card.
    Thanks.

My display is still not working correctly. Apple refuse to take it in for service. I haven't had time to take it to a Service Provider or Apple Centre yet as I am too busy at work. It sounds like they wouldn't be able to give me any answers anyway. I will try and go next week though if I can.
Everyone that's posted appears to have different video cards, so I can't really see that this is the problem?
Some are reporting that their LED light stays on. This is not the case with mine. I sometimes see the light come on briefly when I power the Mac on, otherwise it never lights up as it used to when the screen was asleep.
If my display or Power Mac goes to sleep then there is no way for me to get the screen back on. I have to turn the computer off and then do the unplug/replug thing again after I turn the Mac on again.
Interesting to hear there are so many with similar issues. Surely a software update hasn't caused this? Is it the power brick or the monitor itself? To me it's as if the display is struggling to get enough power to come on. Once on though, it is fine.
Hope there is a solution to this and that these power adapters aren't as fragile as I'm beginning to think they are.

  • IPhone 5 charger stopped working. Can I get a new one for free?

I bought an iphone 5 charger from best buy about a month ago. It just randomly stopped working. I was wondering if I took it to the apple store, would they replace it? Or would I have to buy a new one.

    Hello cas93ey,
It sounds like you purchased an Apple charger for your phone at another retailer and it has stopped working. According to the following link your Apple charger has a 1 year warranty:
    Your Hardware Warranty
    https://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/accessory-english.html
THIS WARRANTY DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR STATUTORY RIGHTS
Your Apple-branded hardware product is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase ("Warranty Period"). If a defect arises during the Warranty Period, Apple, at its option and to the extent permitted by law will (1) repair the product at no charge using new parts or parts that are equivalent to new in performance and reliability, (2) exchange the product with a functionally equivalent product that is new or equivalent to new in performance and reliability, or (3) refund the original purchase price. This warranty excludes damage resulting from abuse, accident, modifications or other causes that are not defects in materials and workmanship.
I would first try the steps in the following article before seeking service. If it comes down to that, there is also a link to contact us:
Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
Plug the device in to power and let it charge for up to 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
If the issue is persists, please contact Apple Support.
