Charging a brand new shuffle ?

I bought a brand new shuffle still sealed to back up in case 1 of my other 2 shuffles gets broken or dies. Is it best to not charge it until its need?

Hello kidthorazine,
Is it best to not charge it until its need?
It is best to charge the iPod Shuffle every once in a while as described in the FAQ below. Even if you don't use the device much you should still complete a full charge cycle at least once a month to maintain maximum battery force. Leaving your iPod idle so long could diminish the iPod's battery life. Basically, you just want to keep its juices flowing.
You may want to check out the rest of the information provided in this FAQ as well regarding iPod batteries.

Describe it a little. Is it like very loud? Or hardly notable? It could be your headphones giving you that issue. Have you tried a different set of headphones?

    Hey avitz99,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the iPhone is not recognized in iTunes. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • No Lights, No Charge--Brand New Shuffle only used five times

I have a brand new ipod shuffle that won't light up at all. All was well yesterday, charged and loaded. All of the sudden the thing went dead in the middle of my run. No lights come on when I try to charge it. I have tried all three of my computers...nothing. I tried the "reset" instructions. I did download the latest version of itunes yesterday. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Moira

There is another nearly identical thread about this same issue. With the same result - no help, no reply, no nothing. I got to use mine once. Woo hoo. Put some tunes on it, listened for about 1/2 hour while doing a little surfing, turned it off. Went to put a few more tunes on it the next morning. Nada, nothing. It is no longer recognized by any of 3 computers. Oddly enouth, the Shuffle itself works perfectly. I can listen to the tunes I put on it just fine. Since it no longer exists according to any computer, I can no longer charge it or download musit to it.
I packaged up and sent it back to step-daughter who gave it to me for Christmas and she is going to take it back where she bought it. She is known by her first name in that Apple store because she went through 3 I-Pods before she got one that would work. I'll post if there is any resolution on mine.

  • Ipad doesn't charge on brand new dock

My 3rd gen iPad won't charge on my brand new Apple iPad Dock which claims to be compatible with gen 2x. I have tested cable without dock and it works fine.

@tonefox - I stand corrected - obviously I was not aware of that.
@Allan and Pogo - I DO use the power adapter to charge my iPad. I merely shared the fact that when my iPad is connected to my MacBook - it does a pretty decent job of charging. I can see the charging indicator and the percentage continues to rise as well.
My iPad is only connected to my MacBook when I am getting ready to sync or when I'm "experimenting" to help users as I peruse this ASC.
I stated to the OP that the best way to charge is by using the power adapter and that is the way I routinely charge my iPad.

  • Restoring a Brand New shuffle

Just got this new shuffle loaded some music from a Microsoft Windows XP computer then tried to add some from a different computer and have gotten various error messages including: iPOD could not be restored, an unknown error occurred (1418)???? Before that I got "iTunes has detected an iPOD thary appears corrupted. U may ned to restore iPOD b4 it can b used w/iTunes. So now what do I do take it back to the store I purchased it from??? Any suggestions on how to make it work?

Not sure if my question has been answered or not. Is it true that I can't load music from two different computers? First I loaded some from my son's computer and then I went to get some from mine and that is when I kept getting the crashing of my system every time it tried to load the ipod. I have tried several times to reset, retry, restart, reinstall and even to restore to no avail. I guess I will try to restore using my son's computer again - maybe that will do the trick. Thanks for your help deggie.

  • Brand new Shuffle - not recognized in Windows or iTunes

I just got an iPod Shuffle 1Gb for Christmas (today). Followed all the instructions installing software, etc. Plug in the iPod - the light on the front flashes orange. Does not show up in My Computer, Device Manager or iTunes.
Uninstalled iPod and iTunes software, rebooted, installed latest iPod and iTunes software downloaded from website. iPod still not recognized and still flashes orange when plugged in to a USB port. Tried several different USB ports - no change.
    Rebooted again (more than once).
    iPod is fully charged.
    iPod has been reset.
I can't restore it, because even the iPod software doesn't recognize it.
My USB ports are fine - digital camera and external USB hard drive still work when plugged in to the various ports. Unplugged all other USB devices and iPod still wasn't recognized.
All my friends love their iPods. This is my first one. I have to say... I'm not impressed.
As I said, this was a gift, so I don't have a receipt for it, and there isn't an Apple store near me. And I think having to pay $30 to send it back to Apple so they'll replace it with a "new, used or refurbished" iPod is bullsh*t.

I had the same problem today.
What I found is that during the install routine, the Shuffle was not formatted. I went through Windows Explorer (right click on "Start" and choose "explore"). My computer found the shuffle as a removable media, but when I tried accessing it (clicking on the drive while in explorer), I got a message saying that it wasn't formatted. So, I said yes to the prompt to format it and as soon as it did, iTunes saw it and started the rest of the install routine. I had to restart and replug in the device, and it seems to be working great.
I don't know if this will help you out, but it is worth a try.
    Merry Christmas

  • Can't seem to charge battery of new shuffle

    Hello. Happy Holidays everyone.
I must have tried charging my shuffle three or four times. Left it attached to my PC at work for hours and hours. I still get the green/orange light telling me it's not all the way charged. I still haven't been able to use my shuffle b/c I can't get it charged up.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I have had a similar problem with a new iPod Shuffle, and I have tried to charge it after Restore on both a Mac Pro 8-core running 10.5.6 and a G5 running 10.4.11, with iTunes up to date. While connected, the Shuffle emits a flashing orange light. Disconnected, it emits a solid green light for about five seconds, then goes dark. Does someone from Apple read these discussions? We really could use some help here.

  • Brand new Shuffle does not play any music ! Cannot debug it pls help !

    I checked everything :
My XP run very well the compressed music.
I can see the music files stored in Shuffle
    Battery is fine...
But no music even, after reset etc...as per manual !
This is the second Shuffle I bought in a week and I already returned the first

This may help. I had exactly the same problem. Ipod plays o.k. via pc, but not through the earplugs.
If this is the case, try this:
    Go to apple.com/ipod/download
Choose relevant OS and download file.
Now when I ran the file, it told me to reboot, I assumed this meant the installer had run. It hadn't!
You then go into Start, Prog, ipod, ipod updater and run the new version. (Make sure ipod is plugged in). You should be given and option to restore. Click it and it will reformat and erase your ipod.
I was at my wits end before I did this and spent hours trying to sort this out.
BTW there is a problem with your ipod if the green light is permanently on at the top on the front of the ipod. Mine was and now isn't.
Hope this sorts your problems out.

  • It sees the battery but won't charge it: brand new battery

I had an old (~4-yr-old) battery that had been holding up pretty well. Then one morning, it would no longer hold a charge at all -- if I unplugged the AC adapter, the laptop shut off immediately. The computer still "saw" the battery in the menubar, but was stuck on "Calculating..." and never got above 0%.
I reset the PMU, no help. I ordered a new battery.
The new battery just came, and it has about 10% charge on it as indicated in the menubar. It is stuck on "Calculating..." and the charge is not increasing.
The computer knows the battery is there (no "X" through it) and can even run off it (if I unplug the adapter, computer stays on and shows red-line level in battery icon) but will not charge it.
I've reset the PMU (several times), zapped the PRAM, and reset the nvram. The battery contacts look clean (no obvious dirt or corrosion).
I don't see the Battery Info in "About this Mac..." (it's not listed at all; is this because I'm in OS 10.3.9 or is something else wrong here?) but using ioreg at the command line I get
    "IOBatteryInfo" = ({"Capacity"=4200,"Amperage"=0,"Current"=435,"Voltage"=15282,"Flags"=325,"Absol uteMaxCapacity"=4200})
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Especially since for the last few weeks I've been stuck using my laptop essentially as a desktop computer, very frustrating. Thank you

Hi, m.g.h. Have you ever tried a different, known-good AC adapter, just to eliminate the possibility that the problem resides there? If you plug the adapter in and the adapter ringlight glows green, turn the Powerbook over and press the button on the battery. The lights on the battery should glow green and stay on if the adapter is working correctly.
I don't see the Battery Info in "About this Mac..." (it's not listed at all; is this because I'm in OS 10.3.9...?
Yes, it is. That info doesn't appear in Panther's System Profiler, so you were right to check it in Terminal.
Your battery is obviously connected to the Powerbook, given the Terminal readouts. That being the case, it would seem that the possible causes include a bad (though new) battery; a bad PMU; a bad DC-In board, if you have a DVI Tibook; and a bad AC adapter.

i've read the manual and the how-tos countless of times... did everything on what the Knowledge Based section suggested... and still, my dear Zen Stone Plus isnt charging! i've downloaded the firmware with hopes of solving my problems but it doesnt work! its pathetic-ally dangling from its USB connecter which is connected to my computer.... my computer is a windows xp, runs on high speed broadband and is not in power saving mode or standby mode... i've been working on this problem for 3 days now since i bought this mp3... its 3.20am now but i really am determined to fix this problem...! pls guys, i literally beg you to help me out coz i'm really close to breaking down... • I broke my charger for my ipod shuffle 2nd generation, where can I find a new one?

    I can't find a new charger anywhere

This is the official Apple part
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA694G/A
It's somewhat expensive compared to the cost of a brand new shuffle.  There are plenty of third-party replacements that cost less, if you search eBay, Amazon, and elsewhere on something like "shuffle cable."  Some of the third-party cables have a dock and some just have a connector.
It is VERY important that the product's description says it is for the 2nd gen iPod shuffle.  The 3rd and 4th gen shuffles use a cable with a different connector, so it will not work with a 2nd gen shuffle.
