Charging iPhone 3G While Computer is Off/Asleep/Standing By

I recently purchased an iPhone 3G and its dock, but it turned out that I cannot charge the iPhone via USB while my computer is off, asleep, or standing by even though the dock is connected to a third party's AC-powered USB hub, which enables me to charge my iPod nano (1st gen.) in the same situations.
I know I can charge the iPhone anytime if I use the Power Adaptor came along in the package. However, switching between the connection to the USB hub for syncing and charging, and to the Power Adaptor just for charging when I don't use my computer is kinda troublesome for me. I mean it would be great if I could keep the iPhone on the dock for charging regardless of my computer's status.
Does anyone know any AC-powered USB hubs with that capability?

Yeah, wouldn't it be nice to just walk in the door and pop the iPhone into a dock and know that you'll have a functioning phone in the morning? I've tried a few things to no avail. Allow me to list:
-USB hub connected to computer only works when the computer is on
-USB hub on AC only - nothing
-USB hub on AC and connected to computer only works when the computer is on
-USB hub connected to iPhone's AC adapter - nothing
-USB hub connected to it's own AC and iPhone's AC - nothing
-USB "Y" cable works when the data/power end is plugged into an awake computer or the iPhone's AC adapter
-USB "Y" does not work across the power only end at all no matter what I've plugged it into
-The Wii and Tivo will charge the iPhone straight up as will a USB battery I have
-Tried my leftover Xbox 360 HDDVD drive for fun and no charge (I didn't hook the drive to my computer, just plugged it into the wall)
All I can guess is that the iPhone needs some sort of phantom data signal from an awake computer source or it's AC adapter. I want to try a USB A/B switch. If it weren't so costly I would try a wireless USB hub to see if it provides that phantom data at all times since it isn't connected to a computer at all (or possibly the opposite being true that it will never sync since it isn't connected).
Talk about annoying. If there was a true "Y" USB cable than theoretically I could plug one end into the wall and one to the PC.

  • Cannot Charge iphone 4s while it is "On"

Hi. i faced this problem where i cant even charge my iphone 4s while it is on.
All this while the iphone 4s works perfectly.
    i) Last week, when i try to charge the phone (using my laptop), i realize that it wont charge.
ii) i try to clean the iphone charging port, with the idea that may be its too dirty/ dusty at the charging port. When i connect the charger to my iphone, it wont charged.
iii) Then, instead of connecting the USB cable to my laptop, i try to connect directly to the power plug, but it still wont charge.
iv) So i thought that may be the problem is the cable it self. So i went to Machines (Authorised Apple Products) and bought a new USB cable, However my iphone still wont charge.
So at night the battery is fully drained and empty, i try to connect the phone while it is OFF, and in the morning, when i wake up, the phone have been fully charged (100%).
So i thought the phone is ok now. When i reach at the office and try to charge the phone again, then i realize, my iPhone wont charge while it is on. it will only charge when it is off. i cant even restore it as my iphone cannot be connected to itunes while it is on.
Anyone having the same problem? Hope you guys can help.

Yes you can. Also, you can view the User Guide here http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf and you can go to http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-4s/specs.html

  • I can't charge iPhone 3GS with computer or sync

I can't charge my iPhone with my computer, but the rest of my family can sync their iPods(two 2nd gens and one 4th gen) It works fine with the wall charger, so I know it's not the cord (Plus I've tried other cords). Also, I've tried switching the USB slot, using compressed air to see if it would clear out possible dust, trying a different computer, and many other tricks, plus completely restarting the iPhone. It wouldn't be a big deal if I could still sync it with the computer one last time so I could sync wirelessly from now on, but I can't.
Lastly, it is out of warranty and I did not purchase the iPhone so I don't even know if I could take it to the Apple Store to see if they could fix it.

  • My fully charged iPhone 4 has shut itself off and will not turn back on. It also does not register when connected to my Mac. Any suggestions?

My fully charged iPhone 4 shut itself off this morning and wont turn back on. Any suggestions?

Have you tried holding down the home/power button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.   If that doesn't work, try that step again but with your phone plug into your Mac.

  • Ibook G4 - battery isn't charged while computer is off or on standby

Bought myself a new battery for ibook G4 (14 inch, 2004) because it's still working quite alright.
Problem is that even if battery is completely unloaded (3%), it isn't recharged when switched off or when it is on standby. Whereas there is no such problem when ibook is switched on and on duty. Any idea?

    Try PMU PRAM reset.

  • Charging iphone 4s by computer with Ios7 software

So I have recently downloaded the new Ios7 and have not had trouble with charging my iphone 4s. I always have a proper connection cable at work seeing as the battery is drained by listening to music by the time I leave home until I sit at my desk.
I found the "trust, do not trust" aspect annoying however I like to download my photos from my phone to my work computer so I'll put up with it. I have just clicked trust and now my phone has stopped charging!
Even when I click trust there is no connection so I can no longer download the photos onto the computer.
I've turned the phone off and no and restarted my computer and still nothing =(
    Anyone else having this trouble?

    Hi there cparlam,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

  • Charging IPod Touch While It Is Off

Can the 3rd gen. iPod Touch be charged while the Touch itself is powered off (attached to a computer that is on and not sleeping)?

    Thanks for the quick help!
Sleep mode is so much easier to work with. Plus, I'm still rolling on USB 1.1, which someone explained to me could be part of the charging problem. The old eMac is actually being replaced this week, so when I'm rocking USB 2.0, things should go better.

  • Battery dies while computer is off

My Powerbook is 3 years old at this point, and I do my best to conserve the battery. Lately, my battery has been draining while my computer has been off! I will use it for about 20 minutes before class and shut it down completely; when I go to use it again, its dead. WHATS THE DEAL?
Also, my battery compartment cover keeps falling off! The battery stays secure, but the cover does not. I refuse to tape my computer... any suggestions?
    Please help!
    12in Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

It's time for a new battery. Three years is longer than most batteries last. If you want, go to system profile and click under battery. Do this when fully charged. Look for the difference between the original charge capacity and current charge capacity. Also look at the number of cycles you've had. If the difference between original and current capacities is very large or the number of cycles is high, you will certainly need a new battery.

  • Why can't I charge Iphone 4S while using blue tooth

When I go to charge my Iphone 4S in car while using blue tooth the sound stops.  What can i do to correct this?  Or is that jus the way it is.

Requires the support of Bluetooth Profile A2DP, that's why. Your phone supports such, but it appears your hearing aids do not.

  • Cannot charge iPhone via non-computer USB

My iPhone charges fine when plugged into a computer or when the cable is plugged into the AC brick that came with the phone. However, I have a few other power sources with USB jacks that the iPhone seems to not charge on. A 30 GB iPod does charge on these devices.
One example is a Xantrex Xpower Powersource Mobile Mini. It's one of those pocket size things with a Li battery inside that can be charged by AC or DC (car). It has a USB port that then provides 5V for charging cell phones, etc. The device works: it charges a 30 GB iPod and RAZR phone with no problems. When I plug in the iPhone, the iPhone does not show the charging battery.
Is this known behavior? Does the iPhone expect the data lines on a USB port to be "official"? The spec shows pull up/down resistors on both. The AC brick from Apple might include these to keep its port in spec????
    Anyone having similar issues?
    TIA

Thanks for the reply, even if it is less than encouraging.
We do use an inverter in the car sometimes, and I have another semi-portable power source with a built-in inverter that we use the AC brick. However, the Mobile Mini (similar in intent to Griffin TuneJuice sold in Apple's on-line store) is for extended power on airplanes, trains, buses, etc., where there may not be a power source and where the device is especially useful for passing time.
Question: does iPod touch has similar behavior?

  • Charging iphone 3Gs by computer is ok?

    Hi everybody,
I have just bought an iPhone 3Gs 32 Gb and now I've got a question:
charging the iPhone using by the computer lots of frequent short times is ok for the lithium battery? Does this action damage the iPhone? Is better charging it in only one long time (for some hours to have 100% battery) or chargin it frequently in lots of short times?
    Thanks!
    Bye

I believe it is better to charge to 100% more often than not. I can't imagine many "light" charges would be the best...
This page will be of interest to you:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
And this excerpt applies to your question:
    Use iPhone Regularly
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

  • Reset iPhone 4 while it is off without the lock button?

My iPhone 4 was at about 80% battery when it suddenly shut off completely. The lock button is broken so I don't know how to reset it. I tried plugging it into the computer, the wall, and held down the home button for about a minute - no response. Is there any other way to reset the phone?

Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • Iphone 3G: does not turn off - no stand by modus

    I have a jailbreaked iphone 3g.
The iphone cannot be turned off. If I press the power/standby switch nothing happens.
If I turn off the phone through SBsettings at first it seems it is turned off, but after a few seconds the apple logo appears and doesn't disapear anymore - a few seconds you see a black screen and then in a few seconds black screen with the apple logo. This goes on and on and on...until the battery is empty.
When it is connected to electricity the same thing happens - with the exception that it goes to the mode in which the "turn-off" bar appears. But if I want to turn it off the same circle starts.
I am guessing that the whole problem could have something to do with apps I installed through cydia...?
    Any ideas?

No support for jailbroken devices can be given here.

  • Charging iphone 3g

can you charge the phone while it is off? when i have tried turning it off, then pluggin it in to a wall outlet, the screen stays black? does the phone have to be on to charge itself?

If the iphone is off, plugging it in will automatically turn it on anyway.
Unless... the battery is drained down to near empty. In that case the large battery icon will appear on the screen until it gets charged to a certain limit, and then the iphone will turn on automatically again. I think this delayed turn-on process is new in 2.1

  • Charge my iPod when iMac is off?

I've heard that one can charge the iPod or iPhone when the computer is off. But I would have though that apple as the iPod manufacturer would integrate this feature into their computers. But it apparently can't. Did I miss something or is it the truth that can't be changed?

I heard that also -- but I checked it with a bus-powered audio interface,
and "Shut Down" definitely turns the USB power OFF (on all USB ports).
...however, USB power does remain ON during "Sleep"
