Charging iphone 3Gs by computer is ok?

Hi everybody,
I have just bought an iPhone 3Gs 32 Gb and now I've got a question:
charging the iPhone using by the computer lots of frequent short times is ok for the lithium battery? Does this action damage the iPhone? Is better charging it in only one long time (for some hours to have 100% battery) or chargin it frequently in lots of short times?
Thanks!
Bye

I believe it is better to charge to 100% more often than not. I can't imagine many "light" charges would be the best...

And this excerpt applies to your question:
Use iPhone Regularly
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

  • I can't charge iPhone 3GS with computer or sync

I can't charge my iPhone with my computer, but the rest of my family can sync their iPods(two 2nd gens and one 4th gen) It works fine with the wall charger, so I know it's not the cord (Plus I've tried other cords). Also, I've tried switching the USB slot, using compressed air to see if it would clear out possible dust, trying a different computer, and many other tricks, plus completely restarting the iPhone. It wouldn't be a big deal if I could still sync it with the computer one last time so I could sync wirelessly from now on, but I can't.
Lastly, it is out of warranty and I did not purchase the iPhone so I don't even know if I could take it to the Apple Store to see if they could fix it.

  • Charging iPhone 3GS in Sweden with adapter that has integrated USB ports

I'll be traveling to Sweden in a few weeks, and I found an adapter that has two integrated USB ports. Both my husband and I have iPhones, 3GS models. If we get this adapter, can we use the USB ports on it to charge our iPhones in Sweden? It doesn't convert voltage.

Please excuse me if I write something you already know, but, based on your last message that you are worried because you adapter "doesn't convert voltage," I'll give it a shot anyway.
The voltage that is supplied to your wall outlet is alternating current (AC). In the US and Canada this is 120 volts AC. In Europe - and in many countries around the world - it is 220 volts AC.
A USB port on a computer, or an equivalent USB outlet on an adapter, supplies between 4.75 volts and 5.25 volts direct current (DC). The same kind of power that is supplied by a battery.
The adapter that you mention, that has two USB ports available, DOES convert the voltage from 120 volts AC (or 220 volts AC) to approximately 5 volts DC.
As I mentioned in my first reply, if the adapter can be used for voltages from 110 volts AC to 220 volts AC you will not have any problems in Europe. All that you need to do is to plug it in the wall socket in Sweden and then plug your iPhones into the adapter via the regular sync/power cable that you use all the time. If your adapter is not "universal" - that is, it doesn't have all the plug adapters for European countries you can pick one up online or at a Radio Shack (or similar store) or even at most airport stores. Do a Google search for "Sweden, power outlets" and you can see what the outlets look like.
    Good luck,
    Mike

  • How to transfer purchased video from iPhone 3GS to computer?

    Hi all,
So I just bought an iPhone 3GS, my first iPhone, and I've also done my first purchase of TV shows off of the iTunes store. (Series 2 of Torchwood as well as the recently aired Children of Earth.) I did the initial purchase on the iTunes store from the phone itself, not realizing that I couldn't actually download the episodes onto the device since that'd take ages over the 3G network. But I did see that I could download the HD episodes to my computer and the SD ones onto the device.
Fine, I think, I'll take my iPhone home and pull the episodes already download off of it onto the computer...
... only I can't find any way to do that. I have seen that I can download episodes directly to the computer and sync those down to the iPhone, but this has caused duplication of episodes; for example, I wound up with two copies of episode #3 of series 2 because the one coming in off the computer didn't actually override the one on the phone.
To further confuse matters, episodes 1 and 2 have vanished off the phone and I can't figure out if this is because I've watched those on the computer...?
Anybody got any ideas? I'd like to be able to free up space on the phone by pulling the five episodes on it onto my computer, so I won't have to download those twice. Thanks in advance!
    Anna

Nope, Transfer Purchases didn't work for me at all.
I wound up emailing Apple Support directly for help and they couldn't give me an answer as to why that wasn't working either. But we did eventually reach a workaround of them unlocking some of the duplicate downloads for me so that I could do them again on my computer, while also deleting the files directly off the iPhone in manual mode. Not an ideal solution, but it did at least give me a way to get all the episodes onto my actual computer.
Thanks to y'all who've already answered.
    Anna

  • Unable to transfer purchased applications from Iphone 3gs to Computer

As my computer crashed some time ago, I reinstalled the operating system and hence all my applications have disappeared from my itunes. I have already authorised my computer again but when my iphone 3gs is plugged in, I will receive a prompt saying that the purchases could not be transferred as my computer is not authorised. Deauthorising and reauthorising my computer does not work as I have tried that a few times already. This infinite loop is killing me.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

I actually found a solution in another forum. I have two iTunes accounts. I authorized iTunes with my other account and it synced just fine. It's really kind of dumb that I have two accounts. One is simply a user name, the other account is the same user name as my e-mail address. ie: kevinsharp (1st acct.) & [email protected] Every other bit of info in the two accts are the same: cc number, address, secret question, etc.
I really thought I had only one acct but I must have created another setting up my iPad.
    Hope this helps.

  • Charging iPhone 3G While Computer is Off/Asleep/Standing By

I recently purchased an iPhone 3G and its dock, but it turned out that I cannot charge the iPhone via USB while my computer is off, asleep, or standing by even though the dock is connected to a third party's AC-powered USB hub, which enables me to charge my iPod nano (1st gen.) in the same situations.
I know I can charge the iPhone anytime if I use the Power Adaptor came along in the package. However, switching between the connection to the USB hub for syncing and charging, and to the Power Adaptor just for charging when I don't use my computer is kinda troublesome for me. I mean it would be great if I could keep the iPhone on the dock for charging regardless of my computer's status.
Does anyone know any AC-powered USB hubs with that capability?

Yeah, wouldn't it be nice to just walk in the door and pop the iPhone into a dock and know that you'll have a functioning phone in the morning? I've tried a few things to no avail. Allow me to list:
-USB hub connected to computer only works when the computer is on
-USB hub on AC only - nothing
-USB hub on AC and connected to computer only works when the computer is on
-USB hub connected to iPhone's AC adapter - nothing
-USB hub connected to it's own AC and iPhone's AC - nothing
-USB "Y" cable works when the data/power end is plugged into an awake computer or the iPhone's AC adapter
-USB "Y" does not work across the power only end at all no matter what I've plugged it into
-The Wii and Tivo will charge the iPhone straight up as will a USB battery I have
-Tried my leftover Xbox 360 HDDVD drive for fun and no charge (I didn't hook the drive to my computer, just plugged it into the wall)
All I can guess is that the iPhone needs some sort of phantom data signal from an awake computer source or it's AC adapter. I want to try a USB A/B switch. If it weren't so costly I would try a wireless USB hub to see if it provides that phantom data at all times since it isn't connected to a computer at all (or possibly the opposite being true that it will never sync since it isn't connected).
Talk about annoying. If there was a true "Y" USB cable than theoretically I could plug one end into the wall and one to the PC.

  • Can you charge iphone 3gs on macbook

Hi my iphone 3gs will sync when i connect to usb port, but it will not charge from my macbook, this is the first time i have tried it, since my 7 year old imac just died and used that for all my itunes and apple tv server any ideas ?

With the new A/V cable you get a USB port for charging during viewing.
The line out jack on the dock is for audio. You can dock your phone and have it hook up to your stereo or speakers.

  • Charging iPhone 3Gs with original iphone charger

A coworker told me today that I shouldn't charge my iphone 3gs with my old cable because it doesn't regulate the charge the same and you could over charge the battery and ruin it over time. Any truth to this? I don't want to have to go out and buy new cables.

New phone uses the same cables as any of their other current products. There is no worry.
Now some of the original iPOD cables are different as back then they used 10W I believe, while the newer generations and current for both iPods and iPhones use 5W.
So if not using a VERY OLD cable from early iPODS (original iPhone used newer one), you should be fine.
