Charging iPhone with iPod car charger/FM Transmitter - Damage battery?

I used a new ipod car charger/FM transmitter to charge my old original model iphone and got a message popping up that the device isn't made to charge the iphone but it would charge so I left it in. Ever since then, my battery seems to be dying much, much faster than normal. Could I have damaged the battery?

Possible that the circuitry or output levels of the charger was not an exact match to the desired voltage or resistance of the 30 PIN connector and thus caused an issue with the battery...but it's not very likely that this alone caused your battery to all of a sudden not hold a charge...

  • Ok to charge iPhone with iPod charger?

I was looking at the specs on both:
iPhone AC adapter: 5 volts @ 1 amp
iPod (5th gen) AC adapter: 12 volts @ 1 amp
Obviously considering the numbers don't match and the total power output is not the same (12 watts for ipod adapter and 5 watts for iPhone adapter), it is not good to charge the iPhone on the ipod adapter.
But I was wondering, can the iPhone handle it? Has anybody tried it?
Or do I have to keep charging the iPhone through the computer (I have no more outlets for the iPhone AC adapter to plug into)
The reason I am asking is that the iPhone is taking a long time to charge through the USB port on the computer. I plugged in to charge this afternoon and it is only about 80% done. This is the first time I am charging it since I got it though so that might be the cause.
    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

OK, I give up. Which is the right answer?

I tried using a 2nd generation Nano charger and the iPhone got extremely hot, couldn't even touch it and when smelled it smelled singed.

The Ipod and iPhone chargers are the same. there is no problem using the ipod charger with the iPhone or the other way around. If anyone tells you that it's not ok you should ignore them cos they don't know what they are talking about.

The iPod chargers that use a USB type connection are fine. There are some very early iPods that used a firewire type connection. These should not be used with the iPhone.

  • Charge iPhone with iPod cable

I was wondering if I could charge and sync my iPhone with my iPod cable, allowing me to leave one at work, and one at home. I just got the CDMA iPhone, and I have the 5th generation Video iPod 30GB. I heard that there is a difference with amps or power or something. I don't want to mess up either batteries. I heard that maybe you can charge but not sync. I have found a bunch of different answers. Thanks.

The cables themselves are the same for the iPods, iPhones & the iPad. The power adapters may be different, but all of the USB cables are essentially the same.

  • Charging iTouch with iPod Mini charger

Can my new iTouch be charged with my old iPod mini chargers? I have one USB and one Firewire cable. Thanks.

If you haven't seen this other post, it might answer your question. Basically the answer seems to be to keep your iPod Touch charged through a USB charger no matter what form, but not a Firewire charger. I'm still not sure about this myself, though, so if someone has a better answer about charging an iPod Touch with a Firewire wall charger, that would be helpful. Thanks.

  • Charging iPhone with iPod charger

I have an AC adapter/charger that came with my iPod mini a couple years ago. Can I use this to charge the iPhone? It charges my iPod mini, nano, and 5G ipod without any trouble. Conversely, can I use the charger that came with the iphone to charge other iPods?
    Any help is appreciated.

Although they are 30 pin connectors, they are not using the same pins for the same features. I read that the iphone will work on a Bose Sounddock so I plugged it into an older ipod 30 pin dock hooked up to speakers through the line out and it would not play the music through my speakers. If I used the iPhone dock it worked just fine. My conclusion is that at some point (When Video iPods came out I think) Apple switched the functions of some of the pins in the 30 pin connector. I don't know why it charges slow, but I do know that since they are 30 pin connectors we should not assume they will work the same for an ipod and iphone.

  • Charge & Sync with iPod 3G Charger?

    Hi,
I was wondering if I can charge the iPad with my old (3rd Generation?) iPod charger. It's the one for PC that has a split cable with the iPod connector on one side and firewire (to AC adapter) and USB (to computer) on the other sides.
Can I use this to both charge and connect to my PC? It has the same iPod connector (it fits, anyway), but I wanted to make sure nothing has changed since 3G iPods...I don't want to blow anything up!
    Thanks,
    Brad

The iPod and iPhone chargers have half the current rating of the iPad charger, though some older ones look physically the same size. So even if they will charge the iPad, they will do more slowly -- especially if the iPad is in use.
I've pretty much replaced all my chargers with iPad chargers, which will charge any usb-charged device I own.

  • Can I charge my Ipod Classic with my car charger that I use for my Iphone?

    Yes.

  • IPhone 5S no longer charges with Verizon Car Charger

I bought my iPhone 5S the day it came out and everything has worked smoothly until about two weeks ago when my iPhone refused to take a charge from my iPhone Verizon brand car charger.  I have not updated the software recently.  It was already up to date.  This is the Verizon car charger that was sold as a bundle when I purchase the phone.  I would understand a little better if the car charger did not work when I purchased but now I am confused.  Does anyone know a fix for this?

    Hi,
The iPhone says that some chargers may not be authorized and therefore may not charge (paraphrase) but I don't see the lightning bolt next to the battery.  The Apple charger that comes with the phone works and my larger iPad charger also works with it.
There is not visible damage to the car charger and I do not remember mishandling it in any qay.
    I hope that helps.

  • My iPod won't charge on a wall charger, only on the computer. I used the same cord for both though. I used to be able to charge it with a wall charger, but now suddenly I can't. I've even used other wall pieces. Nothing seems to work.

My iPod will no longer charge with a wall charger, only the computer. I know it's not becuase of the wall piece or my cord, since I also use the same cord for computer charging, and the wall piece seems to work with others devices. It worked a couple of weeks ago, then suddenly quit. I think it may be something to do with the inside of my iPod where the charger goes. I find it really inconvient to always have to use the computer to charge my iPod. I believe I have a three year warrenty on my iPod, but I wouldn't think it would cover this problem. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

    Not Charge
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    - Try another cable.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Bring the wall charger
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
If you have a three-year warrany it is not from Apple. The standare Apple warrantyis 1 year and y can purchas an extended warranty that give y a total of two years. You can check your Apple warranty coverage hee:

  • I have charged my iphone with an ipad charger for about 4 months

I have charged my iphone with and ipad charger for about 4 months. On the bright side I always unplug my phone when it gets to a 100%
How much can my iphone's battery life be affected? The battery still works but less than when I just bought it, I don't know if it is because of the time I have been using the phone or because of the ipad's charger.

You will do no harm using the iPad charger
Apple give the iPad 12W charger compaitbility with ALL the iOS devices back to early iPods in fact the 4th generation a long way back
    You have nothing to fear

  • Why isnt my ipod touch 4g charging? Every time i put it in the charger the screen shows a picture of a battery with a red bar. I know that means it needs charging but my ipod wont charge!!

Well ,  my ipod fell alot when its with me. Like now it has a broken screen & before the broken screen its been in water. So the thing is , my ipod wont charge! Like everytime i put it in a charger the screen shows a picture of a battery with a red bar then it just disappears! I know that means it needs charging but my ipod wont charge at alll!!! I even tried leaving my ipod in the charger for a whole day and it still wont charge! Can some one please help me???

    Try the not-charging topic of:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
Also, look at the dock connector. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts. foreign material and cracked or broken plastic.
    I suspect a hardware problem.

  • My ipad turned black because i charged it from a car charger in the car

my ipad turned black because i charged it from a car charger in the car please help me its just black what can i do

You can buy a new one.  Charging a device with something other than what the manufacturer supplied is bad news.

  • Integrating the iPhone with the car

I have been wondering what I could do to integrate my iPhone with my car's custom stereo.
Could a cable like this: http://www.wirelesshut.com/0/10424871.html work properly? Both ends would fit into their respective ports and such, but with the iPhone sometimes giving error messages such as 'You can't use such and such product with the iPhone', I would like to know before hand if this feat is possible.
Any body have any prior experience?

im assuming you dont have factory installed stereo equipment....
first i would actually contact the manufacturer to see if the iPhone is compatible...
i bought an alpine system w/bluetooth & ipod capabilities last year, got the phone recently and was told that the bluetooth will not work with the iphone, but the ipod function will work, but if i use it as an ipod and its connected to my car's system, the phone function wont work
