Charging Ipod: need help!

Hey im leaving going to my grandparetns house soon for about 10 days. I know that my battery will not last that long because i use it alot. I'm wondering if i can charge my ipod on there computer. They dont have itunes, and im wondering if that will become a problem. By plugging it in will i loose all my songs???
Thanks gatesy08

Hello,
It's good that you considered this (since problems like the potential ones you said, happen a lot on accident).
Yes, you definetely can charge your iPod on another somputer. Since your iPod was installed for a Windows computer, all you'll need is a Windows computer. If you want your iPod to charge more efficiently, you'll need a USB 2.0 port installed. Other than that, you can charge your iPod via their computer.
And their computer doesn't need iTunes, and your music will not be deleted if you connect your iPod to it.
Any more questions? Glad you asked yours on here.

• Windows Xp not detecting Ipod Need help

When i plug my ipod in to my desktop my ipod starts charging but it doesnt detect my ipod.I have even tried to do that restore thing where you hold menu/center button then when the apple logo appears hold center button/play or pause.I really really need help with getting my computer to detect my ipod.

Actually, the "vice-versa" part works, Macs can read and write Windows formatted iPods, but you can only manage music manually (syncing does not work until it it is restored for Mac). But back to the topic...
And it seems like this is a situation where the iPod has been working and now it does not. Please correct me if this assumption is wrong.
You have to eliminate the possible problems one by one, as many as possible. Starting at the computer... Note: These are separate things to try, not a single procedure.
Power down and restart the computer, if you have not already.
Try a different USB port.
Try a different docking cable, if possible. The connectors can become worn. Only two pins handle the power, so it is very possible for it to charge yet not connect for data.
The dock connector on the iPod may be worn out or have become faulty. Not much you can do about that, except have it replaced.
The "thing where you hold menu/center button" is not a restore. It is a reset (think rebooting your PC). Make sure you do it again following these instructions precisely.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
If this does not help, put the iPod into disk mode, and then connect it to the computer.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
If you manage to get iTunes to recognize the iPod, you may then want to do a restore (think reformatting your PC's hard drive and reinstalling Windows). This will erase the iPod and initialize its software. Then you can sync your iTunes library again.

• Formatted iPod, need help

So I got my dad's old iPod nano, 1st gen with 2 GB. I tried to plug it in with no luck. So I go into the iPod as a storage device in my computer, the iTunes folder is "corrupt and unreadable." I read somewhere I can format the iPod and it will be ok, I do so because I'm stupid. Now, it isn't even recognized as a storage device, it's just and unknown device with no drivers. To be clear, I right clicked the iPod in My Computer and went to format and formatted it, I need help getting it working again.

Did you format it as FAT32 and not use quick format?
After you do that, Restore it in iTunes.

• 30G ipod need help

I just bought my ipod yesterday, I plugged it into my computer but it was in another language and itunes didn't show it on my computer . I disconnected it and got it on English at last. Then I noticed it was saying "do not disconnected" when I disconnected it but I didn't know that until it was in English. After reinstalling itunes, it popped up a message that the ipod needed restored. I hit ok and it shows a green progress bar running on itunes and states "restoring ipod". My ipod states do not disconnect and nothing else. This process of restoring my ipod started about 10 hours ago with no further information just the same restoring ipod window. How long should this take? Should I just keep it going or should something have been changed by now. I'm brand new to the ipod so sorry for the long post.

Ok itunes wouldn't let me eject so I had to go though my computer. After ejecting I restarted I tunes and plugged in my ipod. itunes is running fine but it doesn't show my ipod connected anywhere. My ipod is just flashing do not disconnect. What should I try now?

• HELP MY IPOD NEED HELP

when i turn on my ipod on the coution sign and the sad ipod logo comes up .i try downloading the new updates but when i plug it in to my computer the low bat.sign comes up and dont move i trying resetting ipod but nothing changes could some one help me

Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
Advance Level
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
Last Resort Level
1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery replacement (with pictures)
http://www.kokopellimusic.us/KM_instructions.htm
Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

• Itunes wont open/ file icon on ipod- NEED HELP ASAP!

My itunes will not open at all on my comp. I downloaded the newest version, then nothing would open. I removed all versions and attempted to re-install again. Now, my ipod will not turn on. There is a file icon with an exclamation point. I dont know waht to do and I am leaving for a long trip in a few days and need my ipod! any help asap would be greatly appreciated!
dell   Windows XP

OK-
First, let's get your iTunes open.
Click on Start, Click on Run
Type msconfig
Click on the startup tab (last one on the right)
Click on "disable all"
Click apply, then click close
Go ahead and restart your computer when prompted to do so
When your computer starts back up, you should be able to open up your iTunes. When it opens, close it again. Now that we know it is able to open, it needs to be closed in order to resolve the file folder with exclamation point error.
Now, let's get that file folder issue resolved.
Click start, click all programs, click iPod, click iPod updater, click iPod updater (again)
Click OK when you see the dialogue that tells you what the application's capabilities are
Connect your iPod when it tells you to
Click on the "restore" button when it becomes available
IF the restore button does not become available, and if the iPod updater fails to recognize the iPod, disconnect it. Reset the iPod by (making sure the hold switch is off) pressing the menu button and the select button at the same time for about 10 seconds, until you get the Apple logo. As soon as you get the Apple logo, hold down the select button and the play/pause button together until you get a check mark on the screen. You may have to try this several times to get it to work... and sometimes it helps to lay the iPod down on a hard flat surface, like a table or your computer desk.
Once you get the iPod into disk mode, you can go ahead and try to restore it again. (Start > All Programs > iPod > iPod Updater > iPod Udpater) Click OK, Connect your iPod when it asks you to do so, and then click the restore button when it becomes available.

When I did that on my old ipod and it said doing so will delete all the songs on it and replace it with my library. When I did it on my new ipod it just put the songs that was already in that playlist back on the ipod, not the songs that i need from the old one.

• My iPod needs help?

Okay so my iPod started having this warning saying my iPod was too hot and needs to cool down before I could us e it while it was on the charger.....now it's to the point where it is completely dead and won't even show its charging and yes it is in the right USB port an I have already restored it rebooted it and all that but it hasn't been able to turn on but just last week I charged it on the right charger all night and it stayed in twenty percent battery and didn't go any higher..... It came back when I plugged it on my laptop but I am doing it right now and it won't do anything

You need to listen to what Skydiver119 is telling you
If it's out of warranty you can still take it to be repaired, but you'll be paying hte 'out of warranty repair' rate, which i believe starts at $99 and goes up depending on the model and size of your device. Basically you pay them to exchange your device for a refurbished one.

• Contacts not displaying properly in video iPod, need help

My contacts do not display properly on my video iPod. The phone numbers sometimes have dashes and sometimes do not in the iPod but the phone numbers always have the dashes in my address book on my G4 desktop. Example: iPod 555 555 1212 or 5555551212 or 555-555-1212
address book 555-555-1212 (always has the dashes)
I want the Ipod to display the way it looks in the address book, always using the dashes. I am total type A and it drives me crazy when they are not all the same!
I have iTunes 7 on a MDD G4 running 10.4
Thanks!

hi,
By default Messages should grab info from the Address Card in the Contacts app even if the iCloud option is not checked (and then syncing with other computers and iOS devices that are also set to sync this way).
However the Contacts App does need to be opened and have the Preferences > Accounts checked to see it is using a Valid Account.
The Address Cards need to list iMessages and possibly AIM and Jabber ID info as well.
Next you need to check the View Menu in Messages.
The Buddy Name option only used to work in Buddy List but now seems to also effect the main Messages window.  (So you can change it here to Handle, which is ID or Screen Name).
Lower down is the option to display Names, Pictures or Name and Pictures next to people in the Chats.

• ZEN MICRO doesn`t charge. Need help fa

Hi
Just went to a trip for 8 weeks with my lovely mp3 player.
I haven`t been able to charge it for some reason.
When I plug in the cord the player lights up and instead of
a flashing "battery bars" animation and player fading in color
the player lights up and a "flash sign" lights where the battery bars
should be and nothing happens. No charge!!!!
I`m so fuc$#%@#$]fuc$#%@#$^ pissed of, cause I have to have music....
please help me
/ chris

This is the same thing that has happened to me... except it isn't even that the battery isn't charging... because I took a fully charged, working fine battery from a new unit, and put it in my Zen - same result. The unit will ONLY work on the power cord. It is toast, and tomorrow I have to contact Zen about having it replaced.
The real kick in the *(&* was that not even a new player could solve my problem of coming up with music for a graduation party - Rhapsody had deemed I'd already transferred the music, and not even changing players would change that... so I had to go to my son's computer, and use Yahoo Unlimited. It was a nightmare.
And of course I was just 40 days out from purchase from Amazon. The advice I now give out repeatedly is this - buy the unit at Best Buy (currently $99), and for a mere $30 you can have it replaced if it malfunctions for 2 years. This is not a mail-order friendly device.
