Charging iPod with firewire?

I just got a new black 80GB classic. It seems to work fine, and will charge when plugged into my powerbook with a USB cable. The problem is, it won't charge with a firewire cable when plugged into the wall adapter. This iPod is replacing another which was the same one but it was stolen. That iPod worked with the firewire charger. Does anyone have any advice? Should I send it in for service or is this normal?

Please ignore my previous comments I have just realized that the 2 apple chargers I have have different output levels, one being 12v 1.0A (power supply 4148 E131881 LEVEL 3) and the other being 12v 0.67A (LISTED ITE POWER SUPPLY 4T18 E131881) I think it is a simply case of the older chargers not being powerful enough to use with the newer ipods...... (touch etc) we need to buy another charger!

  • Can I charge iPod with Firewire?

I understand (after dropping $400+, of course) that the new generation iPod no longer supports firewire nor does it come with an external charger. Can I use my old firewire-based charger to charge my iPod while on the go, or do I need to go spend more money now on a USB-based charger? Input is appreciated. Thx.

When I plug my firewire cable into my iPod video or nano, it reports that syncing is not supported via firewire. I can still charge it though.

  • Charging Mini with Firewire AC adaptor

Not having a USB 2 port it seems that I can charge mini with Firewire cable connected to computer...
but I cannot find any definitive info on whether I can use the Firewire AC adaptor with firewire cable to charge the mini.
I have only seen reference to using a USB AC adaptor w/USB2 cable in the Apple documentation.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hey, Thanks...I hoped so.

  • Ipod with firewire cable

My son was given an older, 1st gen, I think, Ipod that seems to only work with firewire cable. Is there a way to charge this directly on a laptop with USB portsw only? Will a newer cable with USB work on the Ipod (so far using my cabling it doesn't seem to).
I wanted to try to buy a Firewire wall charger (the one he got seems not to be working very well), but I couldn't find any on the Apple website.

If it's a 1st or 2nd gen iPod, it does not have a dock connector; it has a FireWire port (like an external hard drive). So the FireWire cable used with it would have a FireWire connector at both ends.
Will a newer cable with USB work on the Ipod (so far using my cabling it doesn't seem to).
If you are able to try using your USB docking cable, the iPod is probably a 3rd gen. Does it have a touch wheel and four round touch button in a line between the wheel and display? It was the first iPod with the standard dock connector, but unfortunately, the 3rd gen iPod was designed to work with FireWire, so it will not charge over USB.
Apple does not sell the FireWire power adapter these days, but you can find them on eBay. Make sure it is the FireWire type.
If you want to use USB 2.0 to connect and sync the 3rd gen iPod, and you are able to get a FireWire power adapter, you can get this special cable that Apple still sells.

It has both a FireWire connector and a USB connector. You connect the USB connector to your laptop USB port. At the same time, you connect the FireWire connector to the FireWire power adapter to supply power for charging.

  • Charging iPod with accessories?

It seems my new iPod Nano only charges via my pc connection (USB). When I connect it to my car/radio adapter and/or bose docking station, I get a message that says 'accessory does not support charging'..
Why is this? Must I purchase a special adapter? My older (much older) ipod charged just fine in accessories.??..

Don't know why that site would give you problems, that is the manufacturers site and I get not popups, warnings or anything when going there. Perhaps a problem on your computer? You can also buy the adapter at the Apple Store.
Many older accessories continued to charge iPods through the Firewire pin (number 29 on the dock in case you are interested) even though Apple discontinued FW file transfer with the demise of the iPod mini, which is a few years ago. Succeeding iPods could be charged through the 5V USB pin or the FW pin up until the latest batch of iPods/iPhone which repurposed the pins on the dock connector and no longer include circuits for FW charging. Supposedly Apple informed licensed accessory makers that this would occur more than two years ago.

  • Charging Nano with firewire?

I have one of the firewire Power Adapters with the dual-cable dock connector that I charge my 3G 20gig iPod with.
Can I use the same power adapter to charge an ipod nano, or would I be forced to buy a USB power adapter, just so I can use the included USB cable? I read somewhere that firewire isn't supported by the Nano, but I'm not sure if this would apply in cases of just charging from a power adapter.

    Hey Derek,
iPod nano will charge from Firewire. Infact i am charging mine with the same set up as you. I have the nano charging with firewire and syncing with USB
iPod will not sync over firewire. It will only sync with USB.

  • Charge iPod with the USB cable

When I connect my iPod to a computer whithout iTunes installed, I get a new drive in windows. But on my iPod I get symbol in the display that says that I should not remove the cable before I disconnect the iPod in windows.
In this case the iPod charge until I disconnect the iPod in windows.
When I use iPod with my computer where iTunes is installed, I can press the Eject iPod button in iTunes and the iPod still get power from the USB cable, and the iPod still charge.
Is there any software so can do the same job as in the iTunes for eject iPod? Beacuse then I can charge the iPod with only the usb cable and still listen to the music.

  • Charging iPod with MB *****

I've noticed that after 10 minutes when MB goes to sleep it stops charging my iPod connected via USB.
Anyone else finds this annoying? MB is the only computer I have and iPods don't come with AV chargers anymore only USB cable so charging it with a laptop would sound like a perfect option but its not if Im not using the laptop during that time.
I know I came turn off energy saving but that is no good for the laptop (or power saving), I would think as long as MB is connected to power and iPod is connected to it it would keep charging it.
bah... just taking out my frustration

I figured after paying for a macbook and a 400 dollar ipod video, a 26 dollar USB charger was nothing. normally while im using my computer goofing about with my downloads and web browsing, its more than enough time to charge the ipod to at least 80%. i never tried sleeping the sleeping the computer while the ipod is connected, but its really not that big a deal, and even though many wouldnt approve of the price of the USB adapter, i believe its pretty worth it.

  • Charging iPod With Wall Adaptor + Converter?

    Hello,
I am going to Europe in a couple weeks, and I was wondering if I will be able to charge my iPod with the wall adaptor and a converter (since their wall outlets are different than ours in the U.S.) without any problems. Will this work?
    Thanks.

Ya to clarify Chris's post a bit, if the adapter says it takes a wide range from the low 100's of volts into the lowish-mid 200s of volts (e.g. 100-250, 120-240, etc.) then you have a univeral adapter that will take "world" voltages. In Europe they use 240V. here in the USA we use 120V.
Now if for some reason you have an adapter that only lists US voltages (e.g. 120V, 110-130V, etc.) in that case a simple adapter will NOT work and trying to use one will just destroy your charger. In that case you need either a voltage converter to step down the 240V European voltage to 120V USA voltage or just purchase a univeral charger.

  • New iPod with FireWire connection?

When I plug in my new video iPod to the FireWire connection, the screen says "FireWire connection not supported. Please use USB cable." I was just wondering if anyone knows a way to use FireWire with a new video iPod.
    Thanks,
    Geoff

It is impossible to use firewire to transfer media off your computer to your 5g Video iPod. However you can still use the firewire cable to charge your iPod.

  • Can I charge nano with FireWire

Just bought a nano (1GB)and already own a 4G iPod (20GB). From everything I read, it appears that I'm safe to charge my nano using the FireWire cord and power adapter that came with the 4G iPod. But I don't want to do so if it's going to zap my nano.
Could someone please verify that I'm safe to charge this way? Thanks.

You won't be able to sync via the firewire cable, but charging it is perfectly safe.

  • HT1726 Charging iPod with mains charger or dock

When Charging an iPod Classic using a mains charger or an iPod dock (on a CD midi-system), do you simply remove the iPod when it's finished or is there a safe ejecting procedure like there is when charging from your computer?
I am being cautious as my last iPod stopped working when I removed it from the computer before it'd finished ejecting. Strictly speaking the iPod screen DID already say it was safe to eject (otherwise I'd not have removed it), but the line hadn't finished going across the iPod screen.
    Thank You!

Yes it is fine to use that. See Using iPad power adapters with your iPhone, iPad, and iPod - Apple Support

  • Charging iPod with lid closed

I was previously able to charge my ipod while the lid was closed on my laptop. Now, however, I am unable to do this. I am now required to leave my laptop open overnight just to charge the ipod.
Can't remember when this started happening. I know i was able to charge with closed lid on my G4 iBook, which I had up until last November when I upgraded to a MBP.
Is this up 'update' within the OS, a change for the new laptop, or just an error?

    Welcome to the Forums!
This is normal behavior for the MBP, always has been.
You can purchase a USB power adapter for £19 to charge your iPod independent of your MBP:
