Charging & Listening at the same time

Gurus of the forum-
I know that this topic has been asked before but I can't seem to get this to work. I have the Nano 4GB and trying to listen to it while it is connected to my computer to charge. Everytime I try to do steps that people suggest it just stops charging and I can listen.
What I have tried:
1) On a computer without iTunes. Disconnected safely - stopped charging
2) On computer with iTunes. Disconnected safely, manual update - stops charging.
I even have a ac adapter and it is the same thing. If I am playing the iPod Nano, it stops charging.
Is there a setting that I missed?
I need your help.
Thanks

Hi Toddack,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
When you safely disconnect your iPod, as long as your iPod is plugged in, you should see either the menu screen or the charging icon. If you see the "Do Not Disconnect" message, that means that you have not completely disconnected your iPod yet. You might want to look atKnowledge Base Document #93492, which covers The iPod Battery Charge Status Icon. You might be having a battery problem, Knowledge Base Document #61434 on iPod: Tips and Tricks to Get the Most Out of Your iPod's Battery may help. By the way, How do you know its not charging?

  • Charge and Listen at the same time?

I am new to the IPOD experience, and I am listening to my IPOD Nano at work, without ITUNES. I want to listen to the IPOD and charge it at the same time. But it seems while the IPOD is charging, the "do not disconnect" icon is blinking, and I can't play any songs. The only thing I can do is "eject" the IPOD, and then I can listen. But even though it's plugged in, I don't think it's charging. I tried to download my music to some other media player on my office computer, but no luck. I am not allowed to download software, so I can't put ITUNES on my desktop. Any advice?

even though you "eject" your ipod, it is still charging. and listening to it while it is chargin is okay.

  • Charge ipod and listen at the same time?

    hi,
i sit at my desk for about 8 hours at work and would like to charge my ipod at my computer via usb and listen at the same time. is this possible? it's a pc computer here at work. and it does not have itunes installed and i don't see having itunes on it as a possibility.
i don't like having to charge it, wait about an hour, then listen for a few hours, then charge it again.
also, do you notice any battery "leakage"? i mean, i have some battery power at night when i turn it off, (yes, i do turn it off b/c the screen goes blank) and then when i get into work and try to turn it on, i get this battery looking thing and have to charge it.
it's possible that the ipod came on while i was walking (it's in my bag), but this happens too often for me to think that it does.

You'll need iTunes if you want to access your iPod and listen through your PC. Also you'll need to set it to manual update, see the articles below.
    Using iPod with Multiple computers

When your iPod is in your pocket make sure you have the lock on to disable the controls otherwise it is liable to get switched on and use battery power.

  • How can I display my ipad on a remote screen and charg it at the same time

I need to display my ipad on a remote screen for 10+ hours a day so I need to be able to charge it at the same time. Is this possible?

The best way to charge the iPad is with its included AC charger. If it is not doing something energy intensive, it can be charged and used at the same time and not deplete the battery, especially if services that are not being used are turned off.
Can you share more about the situation or environment in which you want to employ the iPad and which model you want to use? The new iPad consumes more energy and takes longer to charge the battery than the iPad 2.

  • Charging and listening at the same time?

Is there a way to play and charge the Shuffle at the same time??

Well considering that the charging/data USB cable and the headphones use the same jack, it doesn't seem possible. Maybe a y-cable would allow it, but some of the contacts in the headphone jack may serve two different purposes depending if the iPod is charging or playing, so may not be able to do both at the same time.
On the other hand, you may be able to play the iPod through your computer while charging it. Set up the iPod for manual mode then if you plug it into a computer with iTunes installed, you can play music out of the iPod on your computer.

  • How do I use Lightning Camera Kit and charge iPad at the same time?

Well, that's the question. I don't like interrupting my creative work only to charge this device, I'd like to have a charger and any other external device working at the same time. If you know such product which has Lighning feed-through with a charger cable output please tell us.

    Unlikely to help you though

That's interesting. So after all they found an engineer in the company to design an adapter for them. I hope some 3rd part company like from China comes with a functioning USB (called "camera") adapter that does have the charger interface built-in.

  • Recording and listening at the same time?

you're going to have to provide more details on your setup, because that is how GB works.
you'd have to purposefully mute or solo tracks in order to not hear everything playing in your project

  • How can I charge and listen at the same time?

I'm using a windows PC and the USB connector. If I plug the cable in, iTunes automatically opens and I get the "do not disconnect" message and can't play music.
If I eject my iPod from iTunes, it doesn't charge anymore.

You can listen to the music on your iPod through iTunes. Just click on the nano icon where the library and store and playlists are and hit play at the top. If you want to listen to it while charging, you can do that by using a wall adapter to charge. I do this at work when my battery starts to get low.

  • Using ipod and charging at the same time

I want to know if i can use the ipod and charging it at the same time.

Your iPod has to be on automatic update with disk mode off to be able to charge while using your iPod.

  • Charging/audio cable connections at the same time

Can't find a cable with a small enough end to fit my headphone port and allow use of the charging port at the same time. Any suggestions? No problem with this on my old iPod Nano 2nd gen with the ports further apart, but they are much closer together on my new 5th gen Nano.

You posted to the wrong area of discussions. This is the 5th Generation iPod group (the video full sized iPods that were released previous to the "Classic" models). If you are asking a Nano question, you want to post to this area...

  • Hi there, Will be possible listen and charge at the same time my iPod shuffle in my car?

Hi there, Will be possible listen and charge at the same time my iPod shuffle in my car? I have got a jack going to my sound system the issue i would like to solve is charging at the same time

Since the shuffle (except for the 1st gen shuffle) uses the same "port" (the headphones jack) for sound output and charging, there is no way to do both concurrently.
NOTE:  You can charge and play at the same time on the old white 1st gen shuffle that looks like a USB flash drive.

  • Listen and Charge at the same time?

Can I listen to the Nano and charge it via the USB port at the same time?

I'm having the same problem. I want to listen to my nano at work, but it needs to be charged. If I eject it from iTunes, the battery no longer charges.
I'm using a W2K PC, let me know if you need any other info. This is very frustrating.

  • Can you charge and play shuffle (2nd gen) at the same time?!

we purchased a shuffle to run our 'on hold' music at work, and its a pain in the arse to remember to charge it every night. im so used to my iPod video that lets me charge and play at the same time...
    any suggestions?!

    Hi Jen,
I have the USB Power Adapter plugged into a power
outlet and the shuffle plugged into the adapter. I'm
running a headphone to RCA cable to an audio
receiver's inputs. This allows me to listen to all my
songs on the Shuffle without needing to have a
computer near by. I've been using this set up since I
bought the Shuffle. I have to mention that the
Shuffle I own is 1st Gen...
    Again, hope this helps.
With all due respect, Rick, Jen (the original poster) was asking about how to charge+play a SECOND GENERATION Shuffle...you might note that fact is even included in the Subject field...
But now that you've mentioned yours is a 1st Gen Shuffle... 1st Gen Shuffles ARE available from the online Apple Store as refurbished for $49. Perhaps she should think about getting one of those?

  • Can i use & charge my iPod Touch at the same time??

If i am using and charging my iPod Touch at the same time. Does it damage the battery??

Yes you can use and charge the iPod Touch at the same time.
You can not use and Sync iPod Touch at same time though as Syncing will not allow you to use the touch till it is finished or you cancel the sync.
If you do use it while charging just keep in mind as you use it you basically got a Charging/Discharging action occurring during this time. So it is best to let it charge as much as possible. Disconnect and use.
But if you have immediate need to access something you are ok. If you got a Dock station that has speakers that work with touch. Some of these Dock stations will charge touch and allow you to listen to music at the same time.

  • My IPod Touch 4th gen won't charge unless its off when it's on it won't even recognize the charger or indicate it's charging please help me figure out so I can charge and use it at the same time

    Help would be appreciated

The charger yo are using does not supply enough power to both charge the iPod and power a working iPod at the same times.
Not the wall you plug the wall charger into if you are using a wall charger.
Have you tried another charging source?
I would also try another cable.
    Further
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
