Charging using Universal dock

Hi,
I've bought an iPod Touch together with an Universal Dock (Apple branded). I have an old sector adapter that came with my old iPod (3 gen). When I plug the sector adapter to my iPod Touch, the batterie charges itself ok. But when I plug it to the dock, it won't charge my iPod. It works fine if I plug the dock to my computer through the USB connector, though.
Why cannot I charge my iPod Touch through the dock connected to the sector adapter?
Thanks.

I can charge my iPod touch if I put it on the dock and connect it to the USB port of my computer. It synchronizes well, no problem with that. What I cannot do is use my sector adapter (the one I plug in the wall) with the dock to charge my iPod touch (doesn't work either with my old iPod). But the sector adapter alone (without the dock) works fine to charge both my iPods.
I start to think that there is some electrical incompatibility between the French sector adapter (even if it's from Apple) and the dock that was bought in the US... Isn't the Universal dock the same device in all the countries?

  • Mini not charging thru universal dock

I have an ipod mini & have just bought a universal dock. The mini comes with a charger & a fire wire connector which doubles as the charge connector. The battery charges when directly plugged into this connector. When I plug this connector into the dock, the ipod is not charging. When I plug the universal dock into the computer using the firewire connector, the ipod also shows no charge. Any clues? My inclination is that the dock is faulty but, I want to canvas this forum as well before I return the item. There is also no cradle supplied for this model. Peter

  • Using Universal Dock in a car

I read a suggestion by someone to use a dock for holding your iPod in a car, and using the line out port to plug in a cassette adapter. Since I have a Peripheral Electronics iPod2Car in my car, I don't need a cassette adapter, but thought the dock would be a good way to mount the iPod for easy viewing. The iPod2Car plugs into the dock connection in the iPod, the cable then enters a box with DIP switches, and the final connection is a vehicle specific cable that plugs into the receiver's external CD changer input. Works well and charges the iPod as well as playing it through the car stereo. Yesterday I plugged the iPod into the Universal Dock and connected the iPod2Car cable to the back of the dock. The iPod sat up nicely and powered up. Only problem: no sound. I figured the dock would simply pass the connection on the iPod through the dock to the iPod2Car connector. When I scrolled the click wheel I could hear it through the car speakers, but when I selected a song and pressed play, I got no sound. Am I wrong to assume that the pins on the back of the dock are just like those in the iPod itself? Does the dock not just pass the iPod connections through to the connection on the back of the dock? I had hoped that this would be a great way to mount my iPod and still make use of my direct connection to my car stereo.

  • Using Universal Dock and their Five Dock Adapters

    Hello,
I received today the Universal dock as a free gift with the Ipod I purchased by mail. I'd like to know though since the dock didn't come with any papers which number or the adaptor is meant for the Video Ipod 60 GB. I've tried them and at least 3 fit it.
Am asking cause i wouldnt want to damage my docking port on the Ipod since i'll be using it almost daily.
    Thank you,
    Vincent

All Video iPods come supplied with their own Universal Dock Adapter. This is in the white plastic packaging, inside the iPod box (the white packaging that the earphones and USB cable are in). Use that.
None of the Dock Adapters that are in the Universal Dock box are designed for the Video iPod.

  • Using universal dock to watch video on 5g - no audio.

    Hi,
Have 5g Ipod and Universal dock.
Trying to watch vidio from Ipod on the univ. dock with remote (yes, TV out is set on Ipod). Hooked up s-video out from dock to tv, hooked up 3.5mm audio from dock to stereo rca. When playing video from ipod, only video displays with NO sound. If I switch the audio cable from dock to Ipod headphone jack, video and audio works.
Is my univ. dock busted? Or you can't watch video with all the cables hooked up to just the dock?
    Thanks for any input.

I do have the apple AV cable, but that does not work by just connecting that to the dock, you'll just get audio. You need to connect that to the headphone jack on the Ipod in order for AV to work.
My issue is s-video+audio cable hooked up to the dock doesn't output AV, just video.
I need to find out if the dock supports svideo+audio cable on 5g ipod playing video.
    Thanks for any input.

  • Why doesn't my 160GB ipod charge using my white universal dock?

The remote works just fine. I have two of the (older) white universal docks and the ipod doesn't charge with either. Am I supposed to buy a new, metal colour more 'universal' dock?

Contact the dock vendor.  Only they would know if their product is compatible.

  • Apple Universal Dock doesn't work after full charge

last night, I put my ipod nano into the Apple Universal Dock.
I worked just find with the apple remote.
I stopped the music using the remote, then watched TV about 2 hours.
After that, I saw my ipod was full charged, and the dock station hasn't worked any more.
Also, the remote doesn't work as well.
I can use the play button on the ipod, but no sound out anyway.
There is another archive thread with the similar problem to me, but no answer yet.

  • Using the Apple Universal Dock with an old amplifier?

    Hi,
Yesterday, I bought the universal dock to hear the music I have on my iPhone on my home stereo, an old amplifier (NAD C320), connecting them with an 3.5mm <-> 2 RCA cable. I hear a little noise every 10 seconds, but there's no music.
I did the same thing with a more recent compact hi-fi (a Sonoro Cubo, with 3 years, that reads cd's with mp3 files), connecting the iPhone using a 3.5mm <-> 3.5mm, and I get the same noise.
What's my mistake? Thanks in advance.
    Best regards, Miguel Caldeira Proenca

    Hi, Thanks for your help.
I still couldn't find the time to go to the shop and test if there are any problems with the dock, but I already found an interesting answer:
    - if I connect the jack coming from the amp directly to the earphone plug (without using the dock), it all works fine; this means that the problem is either related with the dock or the phone plug that connects to the dock (the one that's used to charge the battery); this narrows the problem to two options, so I only need to go to the shop and test another dock.
Thanks a lot for your help, in the beginning I was wondering if I was doing something, your comment was helpful to understand that the problem wasn't me,
    Best regards, Miguel

  • Use Apple Universal Dock with Front Row

Hi there, I have a Powerbook G4 15 inch, and a Universal Dock that was bought from Apple.
My question will be, is it possible to use the Universal Dock with its Remote to control Front Row and the iTunes library in my laptop. I know the Universal Dock was supposed to be used with the iPod, nonetheless seeing that it has an IR receiver and the Remote which will transmit the commands, I guess it should do the job when being hooked through the usb or firewire port.
    Product Reference:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB125G/B

the USB connection is only for syncing / charging the ipod. the remote only works if you are hooked up to a stereo or TV. it's probably not going to run front row.

  • IPdo Universal Dock /// Not made for home stereo use

Wow, after talking to “Dawn” at Apple technical support I was advised against using the iPod Universal Dock to connect to my home stereo. Apparently it was made for convenience rather than sonics. Funny but the older model (without the remote and s-video jacks) sounds great when connected to the stereo verses using the iPod’s headphone jack.
Looks like I’ll be returning the Dock and Remote….
Here’s my original email to the iPod store:
    Gentlemen,
At the advice of a friend I recently purchased the iPod Universal Dock (w remote)to connect to my stereo. This was based on his claim (which I verified) that the dock sounded substantially better than the headphone out jack (using the Monster Cable interconnect). Unfortunately the new Universal dock (w/ s-video & remote capabilities) sounds worse than the iPod’s headphone jack. We did a lot of comparisons using the older generation doc and have identified that it’s my new dock that sounds like garbage.
Is my Dock faultily or was the old one sonically better? Either way I would like to return my doc for either an exchange (if you believe my dock to be faulty) or a refund.
    Thanks
    Tony

I recently purchased a universal 5 in 1 docking station that is suppose to charge my nano and also play through my stereo also but when I hooked it up to my stereo I can't get it to play. Wondering what I could be doing wrong, does the stereo have to be on a certain station? Any suggestions I might could try. There was not much instruction that came with it just a diagram but looks like I followed the diagram?!

  • Using the iPod Function of iPhone 3G while docked in the Universal Dock

I am trying to use the iPhone to play my music while docked in my universal dock with the correct snappins that I just received. I here absolutely no music from the speaker while docked. I have tested it while using the alarm and receiving a call from someone. Is there something I am doing wrong or does it just not play music the the speakerphone while docked. Thanks, Jeff

There is a difference between the iPhone 3G dock and the Universal dock with the iPhone 3G insert that allows one to be used as a speakerphone (or standalone iPod) and the other to be used really only for synching and charging.......you can guess which is which!
If you really need the hands-free speakerphone facility (with iPod music delivery of a sort) then the 3G dock is the baby, but if you really want quality iPod music-delivery then why not consider a cable from your Universal dock to your sound-system? This solution works for me for music (as well as synching and charging) but hands-free speakerphone is still a no-go with my Universal dock, so I then use the 3G one.
    I hope that helps....

  • Will it hurt 3GS to use a dock that says 'charging not supported'?

I have a Logic3 universal dock and when I plug in my 3GS it immedaitely says 'charging not supported' yet it does actually charge the phone and syncs to my computer. Will it hurt the iPod to use this dock longterm?

My son is having similar problems with his new dock (Xmas present) and the new touch 32G.
When we took them back to the retailer they suggested resetting the Ipod and trying again, it worked, then went back into the not charging mode after loading up the songs and apps again.
I may be wrong but I think it has something to do with the new Ipod/Iphone models not charging from the Firewire input.
I think that the docking stations are using that voltage input to the Ipod for the charging circuit.
This could render many many devices on the market and in the home today unusable on the new devices apple are bringing out.

  • Ipod Classic 3G (40gb) - lost cables, charge universal dock?

I have a 40gb Ipod classic that I lost the cables for during a move, was wondering if the universal dock will charge it, or just allow it to play music.
In other words, will this (http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MB125G/C) charge this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:3Gipod_indock.jpg).
I know this ipod only charges with firewire, which is why I am wondering. If not, whats the next best option?

It only charges via Firewire? Does it not charge when you connect it to your computer to sync with iTunes using a standard dock connector cable?
If you really have a third generation iPod, according to the Dock's specs oulined in the link you provided above, it should work. If you aren't sure what generation iPod yours is, see either of these two links to help figure it out.

How do I use my ipod in the car without it constantly charging?  I have to use a docking cable into the USB port because the 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack I bought doesn't work with the ipod (although it does work with an MP3 player).  My ipod is a 5th generation 80GB classic.

I know this is old - but did you ever get this working. Thinking of getting a 780 ti card and I have an older mac with the mini-displayport too.

  • Video Output on iPod Classic using Apple Universal Dock and Camcorder Cable

So, after a little experimentation and research, I've found a way to use Apple's Universal iPod Dock (Apple®-iPod™ Universal Dock-MA045G/A) and my camcorder's AV cable. That's right, no need to purchase Apple's expensive and proprietary AV cables. Of course, if resolution is a concern for you, this post is not for you. Note: if you don't already have a camcorder AV cable, they can be had cheaply online or in retail stores.
Here's what my output is like:
    Composite Video
    Analog Audio
    Here's how to do it:
    Step 1:
Get an Apple Universal iPod dock (if you are fortunate enough to already own one, your cost investment is $0). If not, you can order them online, just do a google search for the model # above.
    Step 2:
Go here (http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/mac/2005/11/18/video-ipod.html) and follow the details of the article precisely to allow you to output video and audio. Yes, I know it's an old article for the 5G video iPod, but it still applies if you are using the Universal iPod dock.
I just tested this all, so I know it works beautifully!
    Best of luck to all!
    David

For anyone else with similar issues - Apple removed that functionality in the iPod classic and you can simply buy Apple's cables to make it work.
Sadly, I cannot use it at my gym anymore, but at least there is a solution for the rest of you!
Here is the necessary cable in the Apple store:
