  • How to turn off the Charms Bar in Windows 8.1

I have a new HP laptop with Windows 8.1. I absolutely HATE the charms bar. It's very annoying. I have turned off the corner function so the Charms bar no longer pops up if I swipe the corner edges, however, it still pops up randomly. I'll be typing along and it'll just pop up, blocking whatever I'm working on.
I have absolutely no need for this charms bar. In fact, the only thing I've used it for is to get to the option to turn them off. However, on this laptop, that doesn't completely turn them off.. I have tried going to the mouse control panel to turn them off, but that option isn't offered. However, I don't think it's the mouse pad causing them to pop up anyway.. I'll be typing along, not even touching the mouse pad, and they'll just suddenly pop up.
What is the cause of this and how can I get rid of it? I'm getting rather desperate and at times feeling the need to throw this laptop out the window!!! I much preferred my HP Windows XP laptop, and only replaced it because XP is no longer supported.. Window's 8.1 is one of the most frustating systems Microsoft has come up with.
Please help me to turn these dang things off for good!!
UPDATE: I think I found the solution. I received this link from a Microsoft Chat Line Employee. I followed the directions and the charms seem to be gone.. YAHOO...

UPDATED UDATE: lol... I posted this below, but will repost here.. The solution given to me by the Microsoft Chat Line employee did not work.. Well, it worked for one day, I shut it down for the night, and when I turned it back on in the morning, the charms were back with a vengence.. Seriously, worse than ever before, popping out constantly.  It was like they were really pissed off...
I went to Wally World and bought a $16 wireless mouse, which is keeping the charms at bay.. I actually think it's easier to use than the mouse pad on my laptop anyways. I can use it on the arm of my recliner, on my laptop next to the mouse pad, on a desk top (obviously), but the point being, unless I run the cursor to the very extreme right side of my screen, the charms have remained hidden...
I have a business website, and while working on it, the charms were constantly popping up as I was trying to add pictures and descriptions. It was seriously driving me out of my mind.. Everything was taking me twice as long to add, time I don't have to waste.. I've been working on it this morning using the wireless mouse and the charms bar has not popped out once..
    This question was solved.

For anyone who came here looking for the same solution, I finally did find one that seems to have worked..

  • Charm bar and touch screen don't mix

I have a surface tablet. I have windows RT 8.1.  when I open a app and use the charm bar it either opens then closes right away before I even see the options, or it opens as long as I don't move my finger and try to open a option.
    How do I fix this?

    Hi lefty4ever,
When did this issue occur ?
Have you tried to use Win+C  to open the charm bar to have a check ?
If it is possible ,please plug in a USB mouse to verify whether it is caused by the touch screen .
We can reset the display options to have a check. Open the Tablet PC Settings applet in Control Panel. Under "Display options", select the "Reset" button to have a check .
If the issue occurred ,it is recommended to perform a system restore to recover the machine to a previous normal point .
    Best regards

    Hi,
    Downgrade rights
    Quoting the Microsoft website:

  • Disable charms bar completely

Is there a way to completely disable the Charms Bar.  My problem is that I need to restrict the entry point to the computer settings to the Control Panel only, because we're using a third party application where the proxy settings are exposed through
PC Settings and I can't find a good way of locking them down.  The proxy settings are dynamic so if I force them using a GPO the application stops working.  Works on previous versions of Windows because I can just remove the "connections"
tab from the Internet Control Panel but Windows 8.1 has an additional entry point though PC Settings.
I could just remove access to PC Settings altogether, but that also removes access to Control Panel altogether and users need to be able to change some of the settings.
Also for desktop users I think the Charms Bar is just a distraction, now that they can right-click and shut down, log off etc.
Various people have put stuff up on the web about doing it in Windows 8 but they don't seem to work in Windows 8.1
I think it's bad design to not have a GPO that allows you to lock down PC Settings and Control Panel independently.

Or have a way of killing access to PC Settings without killing access to Control Panel too.
I don't understand what good that would do but you could probably do it with permissions.  Use ProcMon to investigate that possibility.   E.g.  evidently clicking on that button in the Settings charm requires access to
    C:\WINDOWS\ImmersiveControlPanel\SystemSettings.exe
So, for a hack, try just inhibiting access to that based on user class.  However, it looks as if that cannot be executed from Desktop, so maybe you just need to find out how to inhibit MUF mode more generally.
In fact, just before that program is launched this value is queried
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\SystemSettings.exe\MitigationOptions
(and a whole bunch more above that.)
    Oh neat...

  • Satellite S50-A-10V: touchpad issue - charm bar slides out

Hello, I'm a very experienced user and am extremely frustrated with the mouse pad on my brand new Tosh S50.
I am constantly finding the 'charms' bar appearing on the right hand side of the screen and the clock on the bottom left - for absolutely no reason whatsoever.
The mouse pointer can be in the middle of the screen and still it happens.
I do not believe I have a faulty mouse pad, I recon it's just a design flaw.
To approximate how often this happens, I would say that with every 5 minutes of use the charms bar appears for no reason about 20 times - it's incredibly frustrating and distracts me from my work. I could disable the touchpad and use a mouse but that's not the point I need this working!!
Anyone with any suggestions, or should I ask for a refund and buy something else?
    Simon

    Hi
I think you are unaware of additional touchpad functionality and features.
The touchpad seems to support additional gesture (multi touch). This additional touchpad function can be useful in case you want to control some notebook function directly.
I recommend you reading the user manual (page 48) there you will find details about touchpad.
For example the gesture swipe (quickly move the finger in from left the edge of the touchpad) show you recently opened apps. The swipe from right opens the Charm bar (search, share, start, devices, settings)
So this _is definitely NOT touchpad problem_ but the additional feature.

  • Disable Charms Bar when using track pad on laptop?

Is there a way to disable the Charms Bar from coming up AT ALL when making ANY type of motions, gestures, etc on a laptop track pad?
My sister has a laptop with windows 8 and some random gestures she'll make (they're very generic movements) brings up the Charms bar and interrupts her work, which is imperative that it DOES NOT.
I have tried software and creating registry keys. But that has only disabled Charms when moving to the right hand side of the screen.
Charms is the only issue. If I can disable it, she won't have to dish out $100 more for Windows 7.
Is there anyway to disable it permanently from being activated with the track pad? I know it can be accessed with the Windows key + another key.
But this Charms is very intrusive, disruptive and interruptive to her work.

Is there a way to disable the Charms Bar from coming up AT ALL when making ANY type of motions, gestures, etc on a laptop track pad?
Turn off all Touch screen emulation features to make the touchpad emulate only a mouse.  Then the Charms bar can only appear when the mouse pointer is in either the top or bottom corner on the right.  Alternatively get a real mouse and disable
the Touchpad completely, enabling it only when desiring to experiment with Touch screen emulation features.

  • Problem with Charms Bar, scrolling in IE 11 and with submitting authentication data

I have very annoying problem: several times per day without any visible reason my charms bar stop showing (its not shows when I move mouse upper right corner but it shows if i click mouse), additionally in IE 11 I can not scroll and in Outlook my authenticationfails
(username and password are ok). Also in metro view if i start search i can not click on any finding in the bar.
I have tried virus scan (nothing), troubleshooting (none), scan trough command prompt (scf i think) (no result) and finally system refresh (problem has occur again). I have also updated all drivers.
I find out that temporary solution is that i log out and sign in again -  but after few hours problem appears again.
is there any solution for this?
I am using Win 8.1 on toshiba laptop.

    Hi,
Do you have another user account? Does this issue happen in another user account, according to your descriotion, the problem is more likely a slow response issue: slow response to show the charm bar, slow response on the start screen...have you
checked the cpu usage or memory usage in task manager when the issue happened, any abnormal data? Too much processed running at the same time?
Since you have already refreshed the system, so are there any common between the new and old system? Maybe a third party program running background can be a culprit.
Please take these into consideration and post back with the result.

  • Charms Bar Issues on G580

After several larger start up problems now resolved, I have a problem that the Charms bar in W8 pops up whenever it feels like it, not just when moving to the edge of the screen. It's infuriating especially as I downloaded a patch to disable it that doesn't seem to work.
Any ideas on disabling or locking the Charms bar?

  • Software bugs No right hand corner charms - Task Bar and Start Menu Properties

There seems to be a software bug, as you point your mouse at the right hand corner, charms does not show up! The Taskbar and Start Menu Navigation Option "When I point to the upper-right hand corner, show charms" is tick and selected.

    @mrdbeta,
I had this same issue.  However, the keyboard shortcut for the Charms bar still works, and pressing
Win key + C opens the Charms bar as expected.  Maybe the mouse peek has been disabled in the Preview, but try the keyboard shortcut.
    Hope that helps!

  • Windows 8.1 Charms not Showing when moving mouse cursor into corners (Hot Corners)

I'm running Windows 8.1 Update 1 and recently my charms bars no longer display if I move the mouse cursor into the corners of the screen. However, if I press the shortcuts e.g. Win-C the bars do show.
I've check under PC Settings > PC and devices > Corners and Edges and also Taskbar > properties > Navigation and in both places both of the options under 'Corner Navigation' are enabled.

    Hi,
Please re-register the Windows immersive control panel to check the result:
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\ImmersiveControlPanel\AppxManifest.xml
Or you can set a registry to enable charm hint:
    Open registry, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\
Under ImmersiveShell key, create a new key EdgeUI.
Now select newly created key "EdgeUI" and in right-side pane, create a new DWORD DisableCharmsHint and set its value to 0.
If all methods cannot work, try to use dism command to perform an online fix:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
