Chart colors in iBooks Author

Am I really limited to only 6 colors for my bars in a chart in iBooks?  Is there a way to get more colors?

Yes, after I made my reply I realized my mistake by calling it iBooks instead of iBooks Author.  I'll make a point of just referring to it as iBA in the future
The limitation of 6 colors only comes into play when I have a chart with more than 6 bars and the colors start repeating - a bit confusing for a reader even when there is a legend.  I don't use Pages or Numbers so I didn't realize that color limitation also exists in those applications.  Much as I hate to say it, Apple office applications just aren't up to the standard of Microsoft.  I find the Apple products more intuitive to use but they always fall short on richness of features. Hopefully Excel and iBA will play nice with each other.
Thanks for your replies.

  • Has anyone created a COLORING BOOK in iBooks Author?

I've seen several coloring books on the iBook store and would like to know if anyone has created one using iBooks Author?
    If so, which and how?
If not but have a coloring book, how?
How does one make the interactive colore pallette to work from?  Is it a widget and if so where can I get one?
I first thought that all the coloring books were App's until I found actual coloring books outside of the apps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

iAd Producer 4.0 has a drawing widget as one of its templates. You could start with that and put a transparent image in the layer stack to get a coloring book effect.

Click on Book Title, unlock it, delete.
Select a square graphic, turn Object causes wrap off.
Make the square any color you like.
Enlarge it to cover the page.
Send to back. Lock it down.
    That's it.

  • IBooks author color shift with "Save for web devices..."

Hi! I'm a web developer and I'm learning to use iBooks. It's a really easy tool, but there is a problem with color management wich is driving me crazy. This happen when I export images from "Save for web devices..." from Photoshop, then drag it to iBooks author.
As I do for web development, I do this:
    1) Configure photoshop Color Settings to work with "Color Monitor"
    2) Remove any color management from my document
    3) Proof Setup > Monitor RGB
    4) Disable Proof Colors
    5) Use "Save for web devices..." with ICC profile and sRGB unchecked
The exported JPG looks fine everywhere... Photoshop, Preview, Safari, Chrome, FF... but looks washed out when I drag it to iBooks Author. Why?
I solved this issue converting to sRGBIEC61966-2.1 profile and checking ICC profile when  "Save for web devices...", but I'm not confortable with this workaround because I'm not sure about what I'm doing exactly, and I am not sure if this images are gonna look good on any device (I only own an iPad 3).
Somebody know a best method to deal with this?
    Thanks!

Hi KT. Thanks for your response. I'm already using this formats. Anyway, the problem occurs within iBooks Author interface. I mean: I can see the color shift (or washed out...) at iBooks Author at my computer screen. Of course, when I test it on iPad it also looks bad.
It's incredibly strange because the JPGs I'm using looks fine everywhere else except iBooks Author.

  • Can I move an ibook author file from one device to another?

I have ibook Author on my Macbook and my Mac Mini.  If I start a project on my Macbook, is it possible to transfer the incomplete file to my Mini (where all my pictures and charts are stored) later to complete it?
    ~~ Chikana

Just like any other file, save your book where you can find it - it will have the suffix .iba
Move that file, however you like, to your other computer and continue there.

  • Is there any way to embed the pdf file in the book created in iBooks Author to make it available to be downloaded or sent to email? So that the user can print it out.

Is there any way to embed the pdf file in the book created in iBooks Author to make it available to be downloaded or sent to email?
I'm making the book for children and there is one chapter providing coloring pages. So I wish to attach pdf files that allow users to download it at the end of chapter so that  they can print it out. Been searching through discussion, I've found some advice about taking screen snapshot page-by-page > then send the pics from photo album to email. However, I'm wondering if there's a way that make the process easier.

Warehouse that PDF on your own server, then link to it from your book.

  • Want to see examples of creative photo-based iBooks made in iBooks Author

Can anyone direct me to some creative, high-quality photo based books made in iBooks Author? Not how-to books, but well done, interactive, photo-essay books. Books where photos and words interact would be especially helpful. I have searched on the iTunes store, but have yet to find any good examples.

    vinnyvg:
You are man who makes assumptions based on what, I don't know.
Nowhere in anything I wrote is there anything to suggest "You seem to indicate you cannot create your own style by taking a basic iBA template and making changes to suit your preferred colour scheme and within the book set a layout which compliments your pictures and offer an interesting composition to prospective buyer."
Where do you come up with such things?
You also appear to read very selectively.
You say, "I suggest you first master iBooks Author and its functions before setting out on a project."
Yet, I had already written this:
"I have since completely built my first iBook..."
Complete, I might add, with its "own style" I made by "taking a basic iBA template and making changes to suit your preferred color scheme."
"IF you cannot find photo books on the iBooks store.... Go to a book shop or library and study the various layouts for your ideas."
I am not looking for layout ideas per se. I am looking to see what other creative people have done with the tools of iBooks Author, tools that are new to me, so that I might use those tools to better execute the ideas in my head. I cannot find this kind of information in a library or book shop.
Currently, in the iBooks store, there are a total of 86 "Made for iBooks" books in the Arts and Entertainment selections and I can find no Photography and certainly no photo essay book sections. Only a few of those 86 books are photography books and they tend to be celebrity based. There must be at least hundreds, probably thousands, of photo based iBooks somewhere on the iBooks store made by non-celebrity photographers. Among these, there must be some jewels. I have not found them. I had hoped that somewhere out there there would be someone such as yourself with more experience with iBooks Author and the iBooks store who could have pointed me toward them.
A knowledgable person with a desire to help could have done so in one sentence.

  • Bookmarks not working in iBooks author

I am unable to create a bookmark in iBooks author. The “+”-sign in the bookmarks pane of the inspector is faded/unclickable when I select an element on one of the pages (figure, text box, image etc.). I have been reading up on solutions and workarounds, but have yet to find one that works.
I have chapters, sections, and pages in my book but cannot add bookmarks to any of these. I am using the “Photo book”-layout, could this be the problem?
I’d really appreciate any help I can get on this problem, thanks.

I finally managed to find a workaround for this, which I thought I'd share since I know a lot of others are struggling with this too.
In my case, I'm working with a photo book style template, with full sized background images on every page. I wanted to link from one page to the next, but as mentioned, I was unable to create bookmarks on any of the pages of my book.
What I found worked was selecting one of my large background images, then going to the "Widget inspector" (farthest right in the inspector panel), selecting the "Layout" tab and checking "title" and in the label dropdown selecting "Figure". By doing so, I'm defining my image as a figure. I can then select a portion of text on another page, go to the hyperlinks panel in the inspector and in the drop down menu specify that I want to link to a figure, my image then appears in the figure list and I can click to link to it.
Now, this led to a second problem - changing the hyperlink color (predefined as underlined light blue). This is yet another (of many) bugs in iBooks author. I found a way to solve this too; open the Styles Drawer (select it from the "View" menu on the top left of the formatting toolbar). Select the text you want to format (in this case your hyperlink). Click on the little arrow next to the "Figure reference" style (which is the defined style on the text link) and choose "Create character style from selection". In the pop-up that opens, click on "Include these character attributes" and at the bottom left, click on "Select Overrides", then uncheck the overrides for underline and color. Click on OK (I find that you need to have at least one character attribute checked in order to be able to click OK so make sure you have the font and size checked). Now you've created a new formatting style that you can apply to all your hyperlinks but it won't look like you've done anything in iBooks Author - you'll ned to preview the book to see your formatted text (yup, another bug...).
Let's hope Apple get these bugs fixed for the next version, and soon!

  • Importing full-page images into iBooks Author (without image degradation)

Hi ,, I have had little success importing images created with paint programs such as Corel Sketchpad, Photoshop, Corel Painter, etc. Everything seems to work just fine, but there are pixelated artifacts in the final image that shows on the iPad. I create the orginal images at 1024 x 768 ... and save them as high-qulaity jpgs and pngs .... but still poor qualiting especially where large blocks of solid colors are adjacent to one another.
When I use a vector program such as Flash or Illustrator and export those images as jpgs ... they look perfect on my iPad. I don't want to use a vector program however ... I want to use paint programs.
Anyway have success with paint program images? If so, what is your step-by-step process? Hopefully Apple will fix this bug so that paint program's exported jpgs don't have pixelated artifacts at edge areas. There is also a very noticeable color shift in the imported image .. much ligher and less saturated colors.
In the image below you can see the imported image showing artifacts and the orignal image is not showing artifacts.
    Thanks, Frank

An iPad 2 screen is 132 - new ipad is 264.
In cases where you're seeing noticable degradation I wouldn't work with less than 132.
Start high and reduce....don't try to make low do something it can't by simply adjusting the resolution up.
I tend to avoid those 'paint programs' And remember, this isn't just about iBooks Author....iOS does the heavy lifting, but sure, it can only do as good as iBA spits out. I think they're working to trim the sails on compression etc. and it will only get better over time.
The @2x scheme is working well for iOS - I have some stunning graphics for the new iPad in my latest app.
    Good luck.

  • Customize features in iBooks Author

Is there a setting in iBooks Author that lets you change the background color of the dead space around art once you preview your book on the iPad and when you touch the art to pop it up full screen. I hope that I have explained this correctly. It's that dead space that shows up in full screen outside the cropped area of art or photos. Also, I understand how to add to the list in the TOC by adding from the paragraph style sheets. But when I add to the list, some show up and some dont. And can you customize the look of the TOC by changing the font, indent, color, etc., once it appears in the TOC page.

Hey KT, hope you're doing well.  I've looked in inspector for a designation that will change the background from white to a selected color when a png is opened to full-screen, but I'm not seeing anything and have looked across the forum boards for a solution.  Is this addressed in the O'Reilly book?
A client is asking that all BGs for pngs opened to full screen present against a black bg instead of the default of white.  What makes this more desireable is that the default for a gallery appears to default to black...
    Suggestions, kind sir?

  • About table of contents on ibooks author

Hello everyone, I am preparing an ibook on ibooks author and I want to custom the table of contents but I don't get to do it. Whenever I paste an item it appears on every single section within the table of contents. I would also like to know, if I paste an image how do I get it to fill the entire slide. Thanks in advance

I'm not 100% sure what you're hoping to do, but if you mean the TOC background, that will look the same for every chapter (what changes is the text and the thumbnails that are generated at the bottom). Whichever colors and graphical treatments you choose when editing the master, that is what you will see throughout the TOC. As you add new chapters, they are automatically added to the TOC and generated on preview / export / publish.
iBA is heavily template based, as the program is geared towards text books even though Apple doesn't market it as exclusively for text books.

  • Pie Chart Color Scheme

    Post Author: Janice
    CA Forum: Charts and Graphs
I have a report written in Crystal Reports XI that has a pie chart in the Report Header displaying counts of activity by "reason code" for a selected time period.  The users have noticed that, when they run the report for different time periods, the same "reason" has a different color on each report.   It seems that the default is to sequence colors based on volume (size of 'pie wedge').
They would like to have the colors appear linked to Reason Code rather than to volume.  Is there a way to change the pie chart color scheme so that it is coded by "description" not by "count"?

    hi,
As you are selecting 'Color Highlight' for different Pie Slices,  "For all records" option shouldn't be selected.
It should be "On Change of".
Then obviously you will see the colors specified in 'Color Hghlight' tab.

HiI am having a very similar problem...I have a pie chart that is displaying 8 values for scores that make up the total score. If I preview the chart in Crystal XI, I get the correct colours for each slice of the pie, but when I save the rpt and run it from my VS2005 App, the first 4 colours on the pie revert back to the default 4 colours and the last 4 colours stay the same as what I set using the "Color Highlight" tab in the design env.Can anyone please help?

  • IBooks Author filled my drive

How can I purge old versions of the book I'm writing in iBooks Author? My book is a large, 7 GB, travel log and the versions and other data are taking up 170+ GB of disk storage. I have an external Time Machine drive that is handling my backups so I don't need these extra versions. (I have not published or previewed my document if that matters.)
    Thanks,
    Cap

No, this has nothing to do with Time Machine.
iBooks Author created multiple versions of the book I'm writing and stored masses other data filling my internal SSD. I need a way in iBooks Author to delete previous versions and to prevent future runaway disk space use. I use an external drive for TM, which is enough versioning for my efforts. Here's a picture of my MacBook Pro Retina's harddrive taken via GrandPerspective. 178 GB of my 250 GB SSD are filled with iBooks Author files to which I have no access (can't even see them except as a super user).
All the tiny boxes on the left, 20 MB each, and the seven gold boxes right of center, 7 GB each, represent files iBooks Author has stored on my drive. The large blocks are previous versions of my book. (Most of the color blocks represent 256 files, each file 20 MB)
I want to stop iBooks Author from creating multiple versions of my book, because the book is large, and i want a safe way to get rid of all the other supporting files with which iBooks Author has filled my drive.

  • PNG-8, PNG-24, or does IBooks Author optimize images?

We have a fairly large reference book that is being converted to IBooks Author. The book contains hundreds of line art drawing that are being colored. Because of the large amount of drawings we are considering using PNG-8 format, but for some reason in the back of my mind I thought IBooks Author used PNG-24 only.
    Does IBooks Author optimize images?
We are using Photoshop “Save for Web” feature to save the files. Dimensions are 2048 x 1536.
    Here is the file size of 3 PNG-8 files: 42k, 58k, 55k
Here is the file size of the same 3 PNG-24 files: 71k, 102k, 99k
The colors and quality seems to stay the same. Can anyone see any “gotchas” before I continue? Hate to add hundreds of PNG-8 files only to need to replace them later.
    Thanks,
    Rhek

Drilling down into an exported .ibooks file, shows info an example png as follows:
    Color Model: RGB
    Depth: 8
    DPI Height: 72
    DPI Width: 72
    Has Alpha: 1
    Pixel Height: 174
