Charter & msn live search hijacking safari

so recently i've noticed that some websites will redirect to a 'search page' from charter. and just randomly, if i reload the address it will go to the site directly, sometimes it's not redirected it just goes directly. (sites like 'daringfireball.net' or my blog address, just random sites, it changes)
well then i noticed that it would ALWAYS go to redirected charter page when i only put the 'main' part of the address in, instead of the whole thing. i.e. just typing "apple" should go to "http://www.apple.com", but instead it would go to this site: "http://ww11.charter.net/search?qo=apple&rn=PcLMPddnp2HJcpY"
i then scrolled down to the bottom and clicked the 'About this Page' link. and found out that Charter was trying to be "helpful" and the only way to "opt out" would be to add a cookie. (doesn't it seem like i should have to add a cookie if i wanted to "opt in" not the other way around?)
anyways when i do 'opt out' then typing 'apple' in the address bar still doesn't take me to 'http://www.apple.com'; instead it takes me to a search results list from MSN Live Search: apple. that's almost even worse!!
and i can't figure out how to "opt out" of the msn hijacking. anybody else having this trouble? any suggestions?
i've already tried 'clearing cookies', emptying the cache, and restarting. nothing works. this is happening on both my iMac and macbook. and this only seems to be a 'charter' connection problem, because when i log in at a different location with another ISP it works just fine. i also contacted Charter and they said they don't support macs or safari, and told me to contact my browser developer.
thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Pastorabe,
Welcome to Apple discussions; )
Those DNS# values give by H_S, are from OpenDNS.
Your ISP, & many others have numbers to e enter in the DNS server field.
Many folks leave the DNS server field empty, not sure if that was the sase with yours.
In any case many of them can be found here on the PortForward page, look for the Common DNS Servers link.
Some in portforward such i.e, Earthlink's DNS # will still allow for highjacking, these are the opt out #s for Earthlink, that are not entered there.
207.69.188.171 (west coast)
207.69.188.172 (east coast)
If you're west of the Mississippi, use the west coast DNS server as your primary and the east coast as secondary. And vice-versa for those of you in the eastern U.S.
Quoted from an earthlink blog
The Verizon DNS # 's also work for many in the US..
Verizon (Level3) - these are not restricted to Verizon customers
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5
4.2.2.6
It is very nice not to be highjacked to an advertising page or other, isn't it?
Enjoy your Mac & happy browsing: )

  • No contact with MSN Live...

    Hi,
Since I updated my MSN Messenger client to the latest available version I have not been able to log in to my MSN Live/hotmail account with ANY application on my mac... Not even with Firefox.
In Windows XP I can access my Live/Hotmail account just fine.
I have tried to search the net but I could only get hints like "clear out all your cookies" and such. These
hints has unfortunately not helped in my case.
Anyone who can help me with this, please!?
    Thanks!

I haven't jumped to any conclusions about anyone. But FYI: MAC is a typical newbie term and it doesn't refer to a Macintosh. MAC is an acronym for something completely different. Mac is the registered trademark, and it's never in all caps.
If the problem lies with Microsoft's service or with my OSX does not really make much difference in my log-in success or lack there of, now does it?
Actually, it makes all the difference. Microsoft likes to make it difficult or impossible for anyone but Windoze users to use any service of theirs; the evidence (and felony antitrust convictions) are proof of that.
I tried logging in to Hotmail with Safari, Firefox 3.x and Camino 1.6+ and had no problem just a few minutes ago. According to MS, Messenger for Mac 7 is for corporate users who are running Office Communications Server 2007, so if you're trying to send messages to co-workers and your company isn't running that server software, that would probably explain why it doesn't work, although if you've used it before and it worked, that would be very odd. Have you used Messenger before to send these messages, or did you just recently download it and try to use it?

  • How to get rid of genieo search on safari?

I have genieo virus on my laptop, macbook air OS X 10.9.2.
As soon as I enter a name in the safari address bar, I have genieo search appearing.
I've read lots of things and tried many solutions but nothing works and it's terribly irritating.
My default search engine is Google.
I removed extensions and have none.
    I've uninstalled Genieo.
I can't seem to find any file with genieo name in my laptop, not even in library folders.
What can I do? Please help!!

You installed the "Genieo" search-hijacking rootkit. There is an uninstaller, but as the developer is dishonest, you can't use it. I suggest the tedious procedure below to disable Genieo.
Back up all data. You must know how to restore from a backup even if the system becomes unbootable. If you don't know how to do that, or if you don't have any backups, stop here and ask for guidance.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /etc/launchd.conf
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.
If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder may open with a file selected, or the file may not exist, in which case you'll get a message that it can't be found. If it does exist, it's a configuration file created or replaced by the Genieo installer. Any software installer that does this should be considered ipso facto malware. Move the file to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Then restart, empty the Trash, and continue as below.
IMPORTANT: If the launchd.conf file exists, you must move it to the Trash and restart before continuing. Otherwise the system may become unbootable. In that case, restore from your backup and start over. That's how badly Genieo has sabotaged your system. If you're not completely sure you can complete this step, stop here and ask for guidance.
Some variants of Genieo don't include the launchd.conf file. The absence of that file doesn't mean that Genieo is not installed.
    Step 2
Quit the Genieo application, if it's running. Force quit if necessary.
Move each of these items to the Trash in the same way as above:
    /Applications/Genieo.app
    /Applications/Uninstall Genieo.app
    /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client
    /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib/usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib
There's no need to restart after each one. Again, some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
Restart and empty the Trash. Don't try to empty the Trash until you have restarted.
Your web browser(s) should now function normally, and you should be able to reset the home page and search engine. If not, stop here and post your results.
    Step 3
From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including ones called "Genieo" or "Omnibar," and any that have the word "Spigot" or "InstallMac" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This procedure may leave a few files behind, but it should deactivate Genieo. Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install it. Chances are you got it from one of the Internet's open sewers such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site.
Finally, be forewarned that when Genieo is mentioned on this site, the developer sometimes shows up under the name "Genieo support." If that happens, don't believe anything he says, but feel free to tell him what you think of his scam.

  • Why can't I open my Hotmail or MSN live emails on my mac?

Why can't I open my Hotmail or MSN live emails on my mac? also the google pages like google map will not open
Is this some kind of sick joke being played by APPLE for not having bought a Mac before and for daring to have a windows based email ?
I've tried Firefox, Safari, Opera and Explorer none of them will allow the window pages to open up nor can I get Mail to open up my non yahoo emails
I have tried to post this on the communities board several times but the question always vanishes

So you get the log-in screen for Hotmail but it won't complete the log-in? I also take it from your posts that there is no error message that appears to give any indication of the nature of a problem, it just doesn't complete the log in? That sounds like it could be an issue with your Hotmail account. Have you tried logging onto your Hotmail account from another computer, say a computer from work? If not, then the first thing to do is try logging in from another computer. If you don't have one anywhere else, go to a public library and use one of theirs and try logging into your Hotmail.
There is no reason why you would be blocked from Hotmail/Live, Google pages and such while other pages (such as this) are accessible unless one of a few things are happening:
    1) You don't have access to those pages because of account lock-out (that's why you need to check your ability to access Hotmail from another computer -- to verify that this is not the case).
    2) Something is actively blocking access to those pages. This could be one of a few things:
         a) ISP settings, which you seem to have eliminated when you indicate that you tried accessing Hotmail from another location than your default location, if in fact that other is connected through a different ISP, although in actual fact you did not indicate that you verified that the other access point you tried was actually connecting via another ISP.
         b) Router settings, which you did pretty much eliminate when you tried accessing Hotmail from another location than your default location.
         c) Software blocking. This could include the following:
              * Add-ins: You seem to have eliminated the likely hood of this when you indicate that you've tried multiple browsers.
              * Security software: Family blocking/URL blocking software would cause similar issues across all browsers. If you had installed anything of this nature, this would be a suspicion.
There is one red flag I see amongst all this. You indicate that you have a Macbook Pro running OS X 10.6.7 with membership in these forums showing a start date of March this year, your posts suggest that you recently purchased a Mac, and that your prior posts have disappeared (son't know how far back you were meaning, although I do see one from 3 days ago posted in the Windows section). My question has to do with something you wrote earlier in this thread: "I've tried Firefox, Safari, Opera and Explorer". Uh, would that be Microsoft Internet Explorer? How do you have that installed?

  • Windows live search & Tell me

I'm using a vzw tour and wondering if anyone else uses windows live search and or tell me. They are 3rd party apps that I have used on my previous blackberry's. The tell me wont download at all and the windows live search allows you to download the app but it continuously tries to update and make my phone freeze. I found the windows live search at wls.live.com and tell me at tellme.com

This could be due to 2 possible issue.
But first, try another msn, live user and password and check if the sign out issue still continues. If not, the first possibility is that sometime in your life, your had sign on on another device/computer (maybe a lab computer?), I have an IM apps on my iphone too, so once in a while it will sign in to check my mails and this disconnect my computer side, then after it finished, the iphone disconnect and my computer regains control.
Second possibility, which is very rare, is the credential, you need to google it and make your credential more 'permanent' at
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Credential Manager
Note that this Credential manager thing is very random, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Most permanent solution if you found it is due to this,  is to reinstall the OS because there were all sort of settings/registry/network settings etc, that was reported to mess up the connectivity issue. I had an issue with a network server once with this, and read through many googled answers/methods, finally gave up and reformatted and did a clean install and the problem stopped.

  • Send webcam in msn live messenger

hi iam new to mac i was wondering if some one is willing to help me,just to save me some time searching for the answers, here are my questions:can i use my isight in msn live messenger.if not what can i do to send webcam in live messenger.how can i backup and copy my dvd's.and last do i realy don't need an antivirus....tnx in advance.

    Welcome to Mac, lamanblou
Tony has already given you a link to the app you need to connect to PC users who use ONLY Messenger.
I don't think anyone needs anti-virus (AV) on any Mac running OS X. This search of Tiger (10.4) Discussions will give you a look at what others say. Personally, I do not think it necessary to use AV software even for things you send to your PC friends because any PC that is working well enough to get email is already running its own AV software. Of course, if you are running a PC Operating System on your iNtel Mac, you will need to use PC AV software just like any PC would.
As for backing up (and any other Mac questions), the first place you should look is in your Mac's Finder > Help > Mac Help. Just search for "backup" without the quotation marks, and your Mac will give you a list of help topics.
Your next source of good info is the "Support" link at the top of this page. This search of Apple's Support pages duplicates many of the same pages that your Mac Help will find, but the web pages may be useful if you are away from or are having problems with your Mac.
Whether you use your Mac's Help or the Support link, you should be backing up all the important files on your Mac as well as you important DVDs. Use your Mac's "Disk Utility" application (located in the Finder > Go > Utilities folder.) When you have launched Disk Utility, click its Help command for more info about making backups with CDs or DVDs.
To duplicate an existing DVD or CD with Disk Utility (versus merely make a file copy), select "DVD/CD master" from the Image Format choices bar when you create the new disk image of the source disk. When a disk image that was created in the "DVD/CD master" format is burned to disk, Disk Utility creates a duplicate of the source disk. Other Image Formats are used for other purposes and offer different advantages such as compression to allow more data to fit on one disk.

  • Cursor search hijacking issue

On websites like yahoo it seems that there is a program or script  that annoyingly  jumps the cursor out of the google search URL bar into another search field - like yahoo search - usually just after loading the page and typing three or four letters. Is there any fix for this obnoxious behavior?

May 4th, 2014 -- almost four months after Spakuloid's post (above), and this is happening to me.  I have rebooted.  I have reset Safari.  Still happening.  I start to type a search string into Safari, with Google set as my default search engine, but using my.yahoo.com Yahoo! portal.  In the past week (approximately since doing the iOS 7.1.1 update, interestingly), this has been happening on EVERY search!!  Wonder if someone from Apple can give us an honest answer whether they're "pushing" searches to Yahoo or whether Yahoo has changed their portal service to hijack Safari.  One way or the other, something "just ain't right"!  Please tell us what that is!!

  • I cannot watch live stream from NBC live extra using Safari

Hi, I have a macbook pro with mountain lion, safari v6.0 and google chrome v21.0.1180.57.
I cannot watch live stream on nbc live extra in safari, it gave me a black screen, however, I copy the same link and paste in chrome I could watch the live stream with no problem. I checked several threads but still didn't work out.
Can some one tell me why and how to make it work?
    Thanks,
    Tianyi

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac."
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

  • Spotlight Google search in Safari gives Google links in Cyrillic characters

It's bizarre, I know, but when I use Spotlight as a quick access to Google, the page comes up with the Google links (Web, Images, Groups etc. at the top; Cached, Similar pages after each entry) displayed in Cyrillic characters in a language I don't know, although the search results are in English, in Latin type. But when I navigate to Google, all the text comes out "normal" in English, in Latin type.
I presume this is somehow due to settings going astray but I can't find how to locate the settings to change them.
    (a) Does anyone know how this is happening?
    (b) Does anyone know how to fix it?
For the time being I just don't use the Spotlight Google search in Safari, but it would be a useful shortcut to be able to use it.
(Posted here on the premise that it is a Spotlight rather than a Safari problem, but also under Safari because it relates to that too.)

Try quitting Safari. Then select Safari in the Applications folder and Get Info. Deselect any Language you don't want. Close the Get Info window and reopen Safari to see if the problem is corrected. If not, you might try trashing the com.apple.Safari.plist file after quitting Safari.

  • When highlighting text and searching with Google, even though my default browser is Chrome, it searches with Safari.  How do I change that?

Using iMac and Maverick OS.  I have Chrome as my default browser.  I find that going to System Preferences/General under default browser, I note that Chrome is chosen as default, yet the browser "above the line" is Safari and Chrome, while checked off is "below the line".  In other words, the top listed browser is Safari which is unchecked with a line underneath, even though all the other browsers are listed below the line and only Chrome has a check mark.
When I am on a website and I select words to search in Google, it always searches with Safari instead of Chrome.  How do I change that?

Thanks for your response.  I think it was my error in that I did not define the problem properly.  Indeed Chrome is my default browser.  And Maverick does not have a "next line" to default to Google.  I can do that in the Chrome settings.
My problem is that when I am in another application.....and it is apparently an application native to Maverick....for example Contacts or Calendar, Reminders, Notes, etc., if I highlight a word or phrase, and right click and choose "search with Google", it defaults to Safari.  How do I change that?

  • Could you play a live stream from safari to apple tv without going through itunes?

could you play a live stream from safari to apple tv without going through itunes?

There is no way to stream Safari content, with or without iTunes, to your AppleTV.
The only way would be to use a mirroring feature given that you have an AppleTV 2nd gen or newer and a 2011 or newer MBP running mountain lion.
If not, some third party software like AirParrot can also gives you way to mirror your MBP display on the TV.

  • How can i get rid of smart search from safari

Every time that i search on safari or google chrome my search engine comes up to be
    something called smart search?

    Hi!
Please follow the advise given by Linc Davis. It worked for me.
This will be my last comment in the thread, and it's addressed to anyone who has the same problem as the original poster. If you have a different problem, search the site for answered questions similar to yours, and if you don't find a solution that way, start your own thread.
You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.
If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same string you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.
