Cheap and good method: converting 2¼/4x5 black & white negatives to positives

This has been covered here but, I wanted to describe my solution.
I have some old large format negatives from 2¼ up to 4 x 5. I don't want to pay to have them scanned or buy a expensive Epson pro scanner or any other kind. (I already have a dedicated scanner for 35mm). I don't even want to spend money on a new copy stand. Although, I am on the look out for a used one.
In a pinch, I needed to make a positive of just one 2¼ negative. For on screen use only.
So I just placed the negative on my flourescent light box (used to look at slides) and took a picture of it with a 55 macro lens (the best for copy work) and a 24 MP DSLR. I used a high shutter speed, 500, to avoid shake. I also shot off a number of frames.
Most the frames were useless because of a color cast, I think caused by the sensor and the flouresenct tubes. But one was fine. I imported it, turned it positive in Curves, used the built in Effects Black and White Blue Filter 100% conversion, cropped it (with 2¼ black frame around it) cleaned up the specks and scratches on it in Aperture (262 strokes in Retouch).
I did full on Devignette and there is still a touch of it but, that's OK. That’s what 2¼ does with flash. Besides using the Curves to invert it, the only other thing that I had to adjust was Highlights and Shadows. Enhance and Exposure had little impact so I kept them off.
Frankly, it is hard to tell the difference between this and the 4000 dpi scans from my expensive 35mm slide scanner!
I'd do a link to the scan here but, it is for a project I can't release yet. But, it would blow your mind. FF 24MP DSLR, macro lens, lightbox, some time in Aperture and you can put some of your large format images up on Flickr or your portfolio for nothing.

I'd say that, if you are worried about perspective distortion, go buy an Epson Perfection 700 and scan large format film that way.
But I am not sure how I would detect perspective distortion. Macro lenses around 50-60 mm are designed to not have much or any of that.
I don't worry about stuff like that… life is to short. Exessive obsession with perfection to extreme with gear is a miserable existance. (However, do good work though…)
The iPad (any size) is a nice idea too! If you own one, cheaper than buyng a light box you might never use. I just happen to have one from film shooting days.
If you have a Nook, Kindle, or larger Android, those might be big enough for 4x5 or 5x7 too!
For those with only an iPhone, iPod, or other smart phone, used or new light boxes are probably pretty cheap now and even a small one can do 4 x 5 with room to spare. Art stores sell them too. My small one is made for tracing. My big light box was originally on the wall for X-Rays in a hospital. I bought it surplus.

Thanks for that 'sberman' - because my iPhone is backed-up to my work computer (only at this stage) I have had to call our IT Department in Adleaide. (4 times this morning). The last guy managed to get the phone into 'DFU Mode' - no more recovery mode screen - (kind of 'asleep' perhaps) from my understanding of same. I am awaiting a call again from IT so they can get my computer to actually recognise my iPhone on the C Drive. This also happened to  one of my colleagues in Newman (WA). She got so frustrated with the whole process that she bought another phone the next time she was in 'civilisation.' She hasn't had any problems since. (Cross fingers).
    Thanks again, Sandra2474.

  • I scanned a black & white negative. Can I turn it into a positive in PS?

Check System Preferences>Accessibility and make sure 'invert colours' isn't ticked under 'Display'.

  • Converting grayscale to black & white

I have a sketched out map of a parking lot that I want to convert to a true black and white. Can someone please tell me step by step how to do this?
    Thanks...

Curvemeister told you how to convert from RGB to grayscale. And by the way I think the new(ish?) black and white adjustment layer does your trick in one adjustment. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
    Max:
To move from grayscale to "true black and white" (bitmap), you can use the layer...new adjustment layer...threshold and move the slider. Personally, I like to upsample the image some, as bitmaps have no gray tones to smooth lines out. Your target resolution should be 450-600 ppi at the size you will print. Of course, you can go higher... You can upsample using bicubic smoother and then use the threshold adjustment layer. When you're happy with how it looks, just image...mode...bitmap it and you've got a true black and white.
Of course if your image is photographic, you might want to turn it into "line art," which is kind of a different thing. If you try the threshold adjustment layer on a photo, you'll see what I mean.
Be sure to save as, or dupe the file before you begin!

  • TL-WR841N - Cheap and good router upgrade!! :)

Just thought I'd share me experience with the TL-WR841N router. Can pick these up for around £20 and it has made SUCH a difference. I've only had this plugged in for an hour so, if my experience changes I'll keep you guys posted, but so far its rock solid and super fast. THIS IS FOR INFINITY, NOT ADSL.
Setup was easy. Plug it in, dial up '192.168.1.1' in your browser address bar. Use the quick setup to get connected and it should choose find PPoE automatically. Put in "[email protected]" as your username and "password' as your password (it needs to have something as a password and BT doesn't require one). Then voila, connected!
You then need to set your wifi up, all available through the menus on the left. I found Wifi channel 13 to be best (not available through HH3). Use a program like inSSIDer to scan local wifi useage (available on android and iphone also) and find a clear channel with little to no overlaps.
Use WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK encryption as this is most secure. Wifi is on and open as default.
Under the DHCP menu button I added some improved DNS servers:
    194.72.9.34 - BT 30 GB
    194.72.9.38 - BT-8 GB
    208.67.220.220 - OpenDNS
^These were the fastest 3 I found using a program called "namebench".
There's many more basic settings to play with, but these are probably the most important.
Below is a speed test I ran when everything was setup, and yes. This is via wifi!!!
The router firmware can be upgraded to OpenWRT. I haven't done this yet, nore have I upgraded the installed firmware.
Hope this helps someone. Will let you know how stable it is at a later date after running it for a couple of weeks and doing a bit of online gaming over it.

    Just received this router.
So far i'm glad I bought it.
With the home hub I could never get more than 50megs of speed while going through a gigabit switch connected to a TP-Link powerline adaptor.
    Now I'm getting 75megs.
The wireless speed is still as slow as ever though. Although thats probably the fact that every wifi channel is being used where i live.
Now I'm hoping I dont get all the NAT problems I was getting with the home hub.
EDIT:turned out a driver update I got of windows update 2 days ago slowed my wireless right down. Just rolled back the driver and am now getting just under 60megs wireless. Thats twice what I used to get on the home hub 3.
So not only am I getting full speed wired via powerline adaptors i'm getting wireless that is twice the speed I got off the home hub 3

  • How do I convert color to black & white or grayscale in InDesign CS3?

I'm working with a number of publications which require some advertisements to be in grayscale or black and white. Short of changing all of my pictures to grayscale before I import, is there a way to manipulate the color within InDesign? And some of the images I am importing are PDFs, which are even harder to manipulate--is there a way to do this in InDesign at all?
    Thanks!

    >You can produce a grayscale PDF by printing to a Postscript file,
choosing Output > Color > Composite gray, and Distilling the PS file
(assuming you have the full version of Acrobat).
If you have a full version of Acrobat you can do that in one step by choosing AdobePDF as the printer. :)

  • Monitor suddenly went black/white (negative image)...

... in one blink of the eye. Nothing but black and white, but mostly black. What happened? How can i fix it? I have the white iMac that has the monitor on an 'arm".
Thanks for any help you can offer!

BTW, for future questions about your system, you'll get the quickest and most accurate response if you ask in the iMac (Flat Panel) areas, further down the page. This forum is for the new Intel-based iMacs, so you won't be as likely to get proper help here.

  • Where did convert to black + white go in Acrobat DC?

Adobe Acrobat just updated to DC this morning and now I cannot find out where the convert colours tool went. I need to convert .pdfs to black+white constantly.
Does anyone know? I can't find the answer anywhere.

It's under Print Production, which is the tenth icon on the Right Hand Panel.
Then select Print Production and Convert Colors is the fourth item down the Right Hand Panel.

  • Black & White Apple Logo Lockup w/2.02

    Hello all,
Eagerly updated from 2.00 to 2.02 yesterday in anticipation of never seeing the ATV locked up again with that darn Black & White Apple logo.
Came back from dinner this evening, the TV was off but the ATV had been left on playing music. Turned on the TV and got a few seconds of the ATV screen and then WHAM! that blasted Black & White logo again with the unit locked up. No bloop sounds or nothing from it.
I know this was discussed quite a lot months ago when discussing 2.0. Did not they not include this major problem in the bug fixes for 2.02?

I do appreciate the nice response Winston.
but is it possible, perhaps, just maybe that it is not a problem with the specification or all these different devices that the ATV is attached to out there in the real world but an actual Apple problem?
Yes, it's entirely possible, in general though there are other devices which have problems with HDMI so it's not just an  issue.
Does this auto wake up feature actually work for anybody out there? I tried it with mine and the ATV stays asleep when I switch to that HDMI input on my TV.
Doesn't do it for me either, but quite a few have reported that this is so for them, I've also seen threads from some who's tv changes to the HDMI channel when the tv is activated. It could well be a symptom of an issue though if you take the view from your first point.

  • Iphone 4S - New OS - Black & White w/ Inversion - Fix????

How do I reset a black & white image that is inverted?  My 4S this morning when taken off charger had no color & when I looked at it the image in inverted like the old black & white negatives.  What caused this and how do I reset?   Very annoying and even after rebooting will not go back to normal color...   Guidance???

    Hello Rick,
It sounds like the colors are inverted. If you go to Settings > General > Accessibility and toggle off Invert Colors it will go back to normal.

  • Convert photo to black and white excpet for reds

I have a photo and I would like to convert it to black and white except for the reds in the image. Is there a way of selecting a color range to be preserved and to convert the rest to black and white?
    thanks

The problem is that the reds arnt just in one area.
Is there no way to select a color range?
I guess I could use the magic wand tool and set it off continuous while varying the tolerance, but this seems a but crude.

  • Are coloured Iphone 4 back cases and Lcd Digitizer screens as good as Apples Original black/white ones ?

I have recently damaged my front screen on my iphone 4 and have been looking into a replacement, i have found several sites which sell coloured iphone 4 lcd and digitizer screens and back cases..My question is will the lcd be of the same standard as the original apple black/white ones...I have asked a tech guy who hasn't fully tested them yet so am wondering if anyone knows what the pixel quality is like when playing videos etc...I am very keen on having a yellow iphone but not at the expense of the screen quality ... any feedbk is welcome

Yea thats what im unsure of ..the parts are available on amazon.com for roughly £50 for a yellow back case and yellow front lcd and digitizer screen giving you a full yellow iphone 4 ...just a ? over the quality of the screen when playing videos etc compared to apples original ones..i think i will just have to bite the bullet and try one to see if it is as good ..if not then i guess im £50 down lol ...thanks for all your feedback tho

I believe your only option will be to get Apple to replace the screen for you, which won't be cheap.  If the machine is still covered under warranty, you could try to push the case that the screen must be defective for a bug to get in there.  Apple has been known to do free out-of-warranty service in some pretty unbelievable circumstances, that that is at their discretion, so be very pleasant and polite so they'll like you and want to help you out.    But be prepared to have to pay for the repair.
    Good luck!

  • How convert a color PDF File to black & white (gray scale...no color)

How convert a color PDF File to black & white (gray scale...no color)??? creative cloud cs6... Acrobat etc

Hi, just wanted to add my 2¢
I've been in publishing over 25 years and live in Acrobat for making my final files. Currently with a newspaper.
    This is what we do:
    • Tool Panes > Print Production Window
    • Select CONVERT COLORS
    • Midway down under OUTPUT INTENT, check Convert Colors to Output Intent
    • In the associated drop down menu, I choose (because I'm printing on newsprint) DOT GAIN 20% – If you're working on better stock, choose a lower dot gain percentage.
    • Click OK – this will convert the file
    • Save
Note: this affects the file you're working with. Make sure that you use this method on a COPY if you want to retain the original color version.
I think if you compare my method to the Preflight method, you'll see a tighter contrast and better blacks. I've always felt the Preflight method left continuous tones a little muddy.
Now if there was only a way to add that to ACTIONS...!
