Cheap, gaming laptop or PC?

i am looking to get a new laptop or PC, and have no idea what to spring for. I need something under $400, and that can succesfully run world of warcraft. I know it is possible, as my 6 year old Dell inspiron still can. Any ideas of good, cheap, laptops or PCs to use the internet and play WoW with?

If all you're going to use it for is WoW, go with a desktop, you'll get more bang for your buck.
Aside from that, do you already have a monitor? If you do, that will expand your options quite a bit. To be up front, $400 won't get you much, and you'd have to play it on Low graphics settings, if it works at all.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

MSI challenges Alienware with lightweight, 14-inch gaming laptop
The market for powerful and lightweight gaming laptops is heating up with companies like Alienware and Razer both pushing the envelope further in terms of the kind of raw power that can be squeezed inside a small package. MSI, a company typically known for its hulking devices, is jumping in the mix with the release of its GE40, equipped with specs that actually beat the larger names in the space.
The new laptop starts at $1,299 and its base configuration comes with a 2.9GHz Core i7-4702MQ processor, a 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX760M GPU, and 8GB of RAM. That is enough horsepower to handle even the most demanding games on the market today on medium to high graphics settings. It also comes with a 750GB 7,200RPM hard drive, and a 14 inch, 1600X900 resolution display.
The company is offering a slightly upgraded model for $1,399 that switches out the aforementioned processor for an Intel Core i7-4700MQ, and adds a 128GB SSD to go alongside the 750GB HDD.
Despite all this horsepower the GE40 is relatively light for a gaming machine, weighing in at 4.4 pounds, which compares favorably against the 6.1 pounds of Alienware's new 14 inch laptop.
Some other notable features include a built-in HD webcam, Sound Blaster audio, a SD card reader, HDMI out, and the ability to output to three displays simultaneously (including the native notebook display). The company is shipping both options for the GE40 now, so interested buyers need not wait to get their hands on one.

Actually GE40 lose the Alienware 14
    NO IPS PANEL
you can either install two mSATA or just a ODD
Everything is cheap plastic compared to alienware new design and made of aluminium
Temperature is pretty bad on GE40
Warranty is seriously bad news for those who likes to claim in the future because most " notebook " parts are from taiwan

  • New gaming laptop suggestions

My laptop came back for Geek Squad with a message telling BB to replace it.  As they don't carry that model anymore and the stores don't stock the better gaming Laptops they gave me a gift card so I can replace it.
my old machine had 12 GB RAM, NVIDIA 675m GPU, and 7200 rpm HDD.  And it worked exceptional for all games I played.  Most CPU's in the current gaming machines are faster.
Looking for suggestions and bad things on certain brands.
As a base starting point I am looking at the Dominator 895 and 894
The significant differences are 8 gb ram on the 895 and 12 gb on the 894 plus 128 GB SSD for $200 more.  RAM I can install for a less than $200 to bring it up to 12 or 16
Is the SSD that much of a game changer.  I have never had an SSD on a computer (only tablets and phones)
It is my understanding that the OS would be loaded on the SSD.
Would it also then be significanly better perfomace wise to load my main games on the SSD or to leave that alone for the OS

Changing ram in system in most cases does NOT void the warranty. Only time it would void the warranty is if you have to break a warranty seal to access the memory.
SSD's are very much worth it. While HDD win on price and capacity. SSD's are better for their speed (and yes the speed difference is noticable), they emit no noise at all, they dont become fragmented like HDD's that traditionally slows down a HDD speed even further, and they are rugged! SSD's are great in laptops because laptops are designed to be portable and movable. A SSD has no moving parts so they are not susceptible to shock like a mechanical HDD is.
That said it looks like all other specs are identical. I would go with the 894 for 200 dollars more. While you may be able to upgrade the memory cheaper then 200 dollars you will pay just as much if not more if you also bought a SSD seperately as well.
If you get the one with the SSD the OS should be installed on that drive by the OEM. And then I would put your most played games on that SSD as well and then the rest on the HHD.

  • Warning to people looking for a gaming laptop

    I bought Gateway FX P-7805u(Core Duo 2 P8400, 4GB RAM, 17.1" monitor with 1920x1200 max res, and GeForce M 9800GTS 1GB for $1,150 ) about 10
days ago. It was an amazing deal! I searched the internet for hours and couldn't find a laptop that was a bigger bang for the buck. I was extremely happy
with it...for the first few days.
At some point however it started to crash most games I played, showing the infamous nvlddmkm.sys error. I tried every suggestion I could find on
    google:
-Installed latest drivers from nvidia and gateway
-Ran a memory test with no problem reported
    -Switched between opengl and d3d
    -Disabled Aero theme
-Decreased clock speed up to 10%(did work on one game)
    -Formatted to factory condition
At that point I thought it must have been a faulty mobo/gpu, but I doubt it now. There are many people with the same model and the same problem:

GAMING laptop! Too bad I have to return this tomorrow. I won't find a budget laptop as good as this(as far as the specs go, of course).

PC gaming is a constantly changing market. With every new game, it requires more RAM, more Hard drive space, more video processing power and a new power supply to run that new videocard. PC Gaming is a very expensive hobby you must be able to get afford the upgrades that the new games require.
That is the number 1 reason why I do not recommend a laptop for gaming. There are just no upgrade options avaiable for most notebook computers.
    1. Let's say you spend $2000 in May 2009 for a laptop so you can play Crysis.
    2. January 2010 Crysis 2 comes out (just an example) and you want to play Crysis 2 on your laptop.
    3. Guess what?? Your videocard in your less than 1 year old notebook computer will not play Crysis 2.
    4. You cannot upgrade the videocard.
    5. So you have to pay out another $2000 or more for another laptop just so you can play Crysis 2.
PC gaming requires constant upgrades and you can't do that on most laptops.
    Exactly.
While my Nvidia 8800GTX is still able to play the majority of the games on the market

  • Macbook Pro being used as XP Pro Bootcamp gaming laptop - OK?

I am looking to buy a Macbook pro 2.4 with 2gb ram. I want to split the drive into 2, making the other side bootcamp, xp pro, for mainly purposes of gaming. Games like COD4, COD5, GRID, etc. etc., but wanted to know before I buy can the Macbook Pro be a good or great as an xp or windows 7 gaming laptop, or should I buy a xp gaming laptop? I can upgrade the ram to 4gb, no problem, if that helps.
    Thanks!!!

Whoa, did that go the wrong way. I didn't mean that Luke "thought" I might be foolish, but, here's my question...
I want one laptop, preferring an Apple, if I get the Macbook Pro and convert it into 1/2 xp pro gaming machine, will it be worth my cash (can it perfome very well in gaming) or just buy a desktop gaming pc and then just a macbook (refurb)? I can't decide. Thanks for your help!!!!

  • What's a good gaming laptop?

College student here, in dire need of a new laptop.  I dropped my old one and the screen cracked.  Plus it's rather old and slowly starting to die on me.
So with that said, I need a laptop for school, but I also need it to be able to run WoW and LoL.  I have know nothing about computers, so I don't really know what I'm looking for.  Any suggestions?

Like the other contributor suggested, any laptop with a dedicated card (nVIDIA/AMD VISION sticker on it) Will give you better performance than integrated graphics.
Best bang for your buck would be a laptop with an AMD Trinity Processor, and AMD Vision graphics.
While it won't give you the best performance in the world, it will be able to run WoW & LoL at very good framerates at a decent screen resolution (720p HD). (should run you about 500-750)
If you're looking for something with a little more pizzaz and don't mind spending some more money there is a 14" Asus G41 series gaming laptop with an i5 processor, an nVIDIA GTX 660M graphics card that will give you fantastic performance, and also be a bit more future-proof in case you wanted to expand your gaming horizon in the coming months.
Good luck, always good to have more PC gamers.
    FOR THE HORDE!

  • How to choose gaming laptop with right Graphics for your demand?

Most users buy a gaming laptop because of playing games, but do you have clear picture of these GPUs performance and comparison in mind before you choose it?
Here comes the check list about the GPU Pipeline(Cores) and memory info as below table, it's the key index related to the 3D benchmarks and gaming performance, and it's easier for all users to check if the GPU/Graphics performance is good or bad compare with last generation graphics.
Normally we know that GTX780M/770M is enthusiast level for ultra gaming, and GTX765M/760M is for high performance gaming, GT750M/740M is performance level HD gaming, but what's the gap and difference of these graphics?
    Analysis about 3D Mark scores
For the 3D Mark Vantage, it's the benchmark reference based on DirectX10 effects and rely on more CPU performance. According to the score rated, performance level should over P7000 score, high performance level should over P13000 score, extreme performance level must over P18000 score. So you could see that GTX780M, GTX770M, GTX680M and GTX675MX were on the top of the enthusiast level graphics with great performance.
Then we look on the 3D Mark 11 tests, it's pure DirectX11 gaming performance test, more rely on GPU/Graphics performance, and less impact from different CPU, so you could see that 3D Mark 11 is more demand on graphics performance. Performance level need to over P2000 score, High Performance level need to over P3000 score, and to be enthusiast level will need to over P4000 score. Take a look on GTX780M, it's top performance and leading far from other graphics performance, GTX770M and GTX680M are also great to pver P5000 score as enthusiast level graphics. GTX765M got same score as GTX675MX, so you could see the improvement of the GTX7xx series from GT6xx series.
Same situation with 3D Mark Fire Strike, the latest benchmark program from Future Mark, it's also the heavy loading 3D test program of DirectX11 effects, so you could see the score was similar but lower to 3D Mark 11 P score results.
Then we look at AMD platform with GX60/GX70 series from MSI, it's all over P4800 score, so the gaming experience is really better than enough, and you could take it with Eynfinity mode as a gaming machine with 3 monitors surround view as well.
    Something need to be noticed
There is a trap from different memory chip difference, we take a look on the GT750M with 2 columns, the top one comes with GDDR5 and below one comes with DDR3, you could see the GDDR5 version is over 10% faster than DDR3 version, that means 4GB is not help on the performance enhancement, please choose MSI GE series laptop with GT750M GDDR5 will be much better for gaming.
Another part, you could see both Intel embedded graphics HD4600 and AMD embedded graphics AMD8650G was faster than GT720M and GT630M, so anyone who wants to buy the laptop with GT720M/GT630M graphics or under, it's a kind of waste on the performance and price point of view, you rather to buy an UMA version laptop without low performance graphics to have less heat, lower power consumption and more battery life indeed.
    Conclusion at last
Lets come out a performance summarize for your purchase reference.
MSI GT series with GTX780M/770M is the best choice for 1920x1080 Full HD resolution and ultra detail setup gaming experience. That's why professional gamers always buy MSI GT series with finest graphics!
Choose GE series or GS70 with GTX765M/760M is suitable for 160x900 HD+ resolution and higher detail gaming experience, if users wants to play with 1920x1080, must sacrifice the detail to become medium, for some heavy game titles even need to set low detail.
If you are not powerful graphics demand users, you could choose GE series with GT750M or GP series with 740M, is suitable for 1366x768 HD resolution and high detail gaming experience, or runs at 1600x900 with lower detail setup. Sometimes GT740M even need to adjust the detail become medium or low to make the game smoother to play in heavy loading games.
Remark: All benchmarks will have +-5% score range depends on different test status and conditions.

WOW ~ the most detail analysis I've ever see ,  gamers just follow the above expert's suggestion ,  you will buy excatly what you need !!! rocks !
    - best enthusiast and ultimated gaming without budget limitation, just choose GT70/GT60 series
    - gamers need super mobility should choose GS70 series
    - the best cost/ performance ratio product should be GE70/GE60/GE40, or GX70/GX60 ( HD8970M also great for ultimated gaming)
    - if you are on-line gamer or multi media professional expert, GE or GP series is also great for you
    - GS is also great with super slim body, professional expert for movies and music studio must take into consideration...

  • HP Omen Gaming Laptop

    Hello,
Is BestBuy going to sell new HP Omen Gaming Laptop?
    {removed per forum guidelines}
    Thanks!

IF Best Buy is going to carry it then it will probably be for order only.  They tend to not carry a lot of gaming computers in store.
However, it is sweet that it comes with the solid state drive.  It is not so sweet that it does not also come with a 7200 rpm hard drive.
If you go with the base model SSD it is only 128GB and 8 GB of RAM.  Windows is going to be around 35GB. so you would be able to install perhaps 2 high end games at one time.
8 GB ram is not a bad thing and the GTX 860 is going to rock.
It is also only a 15" display.
For the price of the base model you could get a higher performing machine for the same price and a 17" display.
Primary battery is also pretty small, but then again  you are not going to game on the battery.

  • Flash causes Firefox to slow down and even freeze (and on a gaming laptop, too). How to fix this?

Every time I use the Flash plug-in (for videos on YouTube or PutLocker or whatever), FireFox just slows down a lot and even freezes. It happens very often now and it's really annoying.
By the way, I am using a gaming laptop so I am not sure why I am having these problems. My Flash plug-in and firefox are updated to the latest versions, too.
    My specs:
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    Intel i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHZ (8 CPUs)
nVidia GTX 560m 3GB vRAM dedicated
    16GB RAM

Okay, so I uninstalled and reinstalled it. That helped only for about ten minutes and it started doing it again.
I don't know what else to do. :S

    Hey Daryl,
Before I make any recommendations, I have a couple questions for you. Do you have a price range in mind? Do you already have a preferred Brand? I can tell you that Alienware and Asus are among the best brands for gaming laptops. Other than being good for gaming, do you know any other features that are very important to you? Will you travel out of the house with this laptop? What type of games do you want to play?
Proving these details about your preferences and lifestyle will help me make a better recommendation for you!

  • Review: Eurocom M4 Gaming Laptop

The Eurocom M4 Gaming Laptop proves that not all things are created equal. While it has powerful gaming specs inside, it looks like the most unassuming thing in the world. There are no fancy lights or textured casing. No visible bells and whistles. The M4 is built to perform and it does it well. If you're interested in a great back to school laptop that works hard and games hard, this may be the one. Come check it out.

well, I never image that a gaming NB could be so slim like a Ultrabook, I guess this GS70 is made by metal and with very advance thermal design, the VGA and CPU is the highest power consumption parts and GS70 just handel the balence of thermal and high performance..... you can tell by the picture that is super slim....

Forget HP. They all have inadequate fan and heat sink designs for heavy gaming.
     http://www.pro-star.com/index.cfm?mainpage=productdetail&model=X8100&subpage=spec#gotop
This has three fans, two of which are dedicated to the CPU and GPU, one for each. The laptop is designed specifically for gaming.
This laptop's specs. blows any thing that HP has out of the water.

  • Can I prevent dust killing my gaming laptop using a room air purifier set up ?

I have  MSI Wind Top AE1900 2009 model at home which my brother uses for gaming. Lately the fan is sounding like a lawnmower and the system has slowed down considerably . I asked a friend to take a look and he tells me its probably because of heating due to dust build up .To be honest I clean it just once a year and sometimes use a vacuum cleaner or a hairdryer to knock off the dust on the surface. I'm thinking of investing in a new gaming laptop since I cannot upgrade this model is there something I could do to improve performance ?? As a temporary solution I'm planning on using our room air purifier ClairBF2025 (go-clair.com) to prevent dust build up .
Is there an easier workable option out there ? Would appreciate any suggestion /advice.
