Cheap PC Card for Firewire

Hi!
I just bought a PCMCIA card for my Powerbook... at least, I hope I did! I have plugged it into the slot, pushed it in so that is fully inserted into the PC card slot, and... nothing. I have checked it with a firewire drive and with an iPod, and neither device is seen.
Am I missing something? There doesn't seem to be any info on a driver, although it says that Windows XP should be able to find the device without one...

Hi, Josh. Does Apple System Profiler detect the card? If not, check to make sure your PCMCIA card cage's connection to the logic board hasn't worked loose, as they sometimes do. Release the keyboard (instructions are in your owner's manual) and flip it gently back onto the wrist rest. Look for a brown tab under the normal position of the D and X keys. That's the card cage's connector to the logic board. Press it down firmly; if it moves or clicks at all, it was loose and probably not making good contact. Test again after returning the keyboard to its place.
A FireWire card should require no driver other than what is included in the Mac OS.

  • Adapter card for firewire ports

iMovie recognizes my camera but will not download. Genius Bar succeeded using an adapter card with firewire ports with assumption that port on computer was bad.
I am searching Apple Store and cannot find this adapter card. What would it be called?
    thanks for help

If you mean the online Apple Store, it doesn't currently carry any adapter cards of that type. They are available from many other online vendors. But why not buy one exactly like the one the Genius used, at the store where s/he used it?

  • Cheap graphics card for a media center PC

so i traded some hardware teh other day, and got an asus m2n68 board that i started building a media center pc with. now my idea was to use xbmc and mythtv. now as it turns out, mythtv is a little more involved to setup than i expected, i haven't even managed to get my tv tuner working yet, so thats one issue
the other thing, the main thing anyhow, is it turns out the xbmc performance is terrible with the nouveau driver, so i'm thinking about getting a cheap radeon 4350 since as far as i know, they'll do audio over hdmi so i can run a single cable from the box to my tv. my question here now is if anyone has any experience with the radeonhd drivers and these cards, even maybe with xbmc? i just don't want to go out and spend the money to find out it doesn't work any better than what i had performance wise. really just want to know if the radeonhd drivers are working 100% with the 4350 or not

yes, absolutely, for standard playback, the integrated chipset was good. the problem was XBMC doesn't seem to work well with the nouveau driver, even trying to browse menu's was super choppy, took like 10-20 seconds everytime you press down in a menu for example to see the selection change. i could have used nvidia's binary driver, but i've been using nouveau for so long now, and it actually makes my system feel like it has a quad core which the nvidia didn't at the time, maybe nvidia's drivers have improved since then? but at the same time, i'm glad i got the radeon, the XBMC performance is great, and the HDMI hookup for the tv is convienient as well. Also using the vga input on my TV, i kept having to adjust the screen position because its constant autoscan everytime the resolution changed did not get it right, with the hdmi its lined up perfect without having to mess with it. so i think the 50$ for the card and an hdmi cable was worth it

  • USB and Firewire Card for Mac Pro 3.0

I am running out of USB and Firewire Ports. Any suggestions on expansion cards for Firewire and USB??
    Thanks
    John

The Sonnet PCI USB Express cards have this problem too - for the record. Sonnet know about the MacPro not waking with it installed, as do Apple. I am sure Apple willl come up with something, I may even find a workaround, but it has always seemed that expansion cards with all my Macs [ waaaay too many] have produced unpredicatable problems.

  • Sound card for my G4 quicksilver

can anyone point me in the direction of a cheap sound card for my quicksilver?
i want to fit it with an optical output to connect it to a surround system just like newer powermac models. i will not be needing a bunch of analog outputs or any inputs. i want to make this as cheap as possible.
    any suggestions?

    Dear Hans-Marius ?verland,
...can anyone point me in the direction of a cheap sound card for my quicksilver?...
Well, I don't know how much cheap you want this sound card you're after, but I reccon that the M-Audio Revolution 5.1 PCI card would certainly return you the best bang for your buks.
It's Mac OSX savvy and plays DOLBY 5.1 surround GREAT!
At under US$100,00 I haven't found anything better so far.
Hope the above is of some help to you.
    Ciao.

  • PCMCIA firewire card for G4 laptop (follow-up to excessive timecode breaks)

1.) It was recommended that I get a new firewire bus to resolve excessive timecode breaks when importing from a Canon camcorder to an external hard drive. I've been reading through posts on this topic...and saw getting a new firewire port mentioned a few times... How come when I called Apple to check on the cost of a new firewire card for my laptop Powerbook G4, I was told that nothing could be added without replacing the entire logic board? Am I missing something? I didn't say "PCMCIA firewire drive" - is that something special? Any idea of the cost to purchase and install?
2.) Apple recommended just capturing to my internal hard drive, and transfering the projects. Apart from this being cumbersome... I need a little verification: if I transfer PROJECT X to my external hard drive, then do I also need to transfer my Audio Render, Autosave,Capture Scratch, Render, Thumbnail, and Waveform folders? [I realize this is basic, but I'm wary of losing the information the project needs and getting it all messed up]

pcmcia is an card slot. If you have a 12" PB you may not have one.
If you have a pcmcia slot, buy the card. Slide the card into your computer and start up. Put the camcorder on the card and your fw drive on the port built-in to your computer. Even if this does not solve the timecode issues, it will save you other headaches in the future.
Question. Does capturing to your internal drive solve the timecode issues you are having?
I disagree with the advice of capturing to your internal drive and transfering the project after the fact. There are a bunch of reasons why, and all of them are qualified, so I hesitate to go further until I know whether or not capturing to the internal drive is making your timecode headaches go away.
I suspect capturing to the internal drive will not help the timecode issues which will make the whole point moot. But hopefully I'm wrong :>

When you talk to representatives from Apple, you have to be conscious that if they are not specialists in the area you are focused on their advice may be based on general recommendations from an IT or home user perspective. There is a difference between talking to a sales person on the floor of the Apple Store and someone from the Genius Bar. And the person at the Genius Bar may have a tremendous background in network installations, but never have opened FCP. Or you might get lucky and get a FCP savvy genius, who would be a bit weak when talking about some other area.
This is not a knock, just a reality. It is difficult to be deeply conversant with even one area. It is not realistic for the generalists you usually deal with to know the best answers to very specific questions.
I'm working toward becoming a certified trainer with FCP and it is not easy or cheap to become an expert at this one application, never mind all the possible applications and hardware combinations for wildly different needs and budgets.

  • FireWire Card for Liquid Mix?

    Hi
I read a lot about a firewire card for the express slot, to use LM well.
So, I will buy a new MacBook or MacBook Pro. But I like the small inch versions. But the 13" MacBook doesn´t have this slot. Only the MacBook Pro 15" which I don´t realy want.
Are there any other options to run LM smooth.
    Thanks for tips

I have no Interface running on my fireport. But 2 HardDisk. One of them I could disconect. But the other I´ll need, cause the AppleLoops and all the sessions are stored on this HD. Would a firewire hub runs well?
I really would like to have the 13".
My use interal audio or my Mbox which is using the USB-Port.

  • FireWire card for Slimline s5123w desktop

I was wondering if it was possible to add a FireWire card to this computer. I recently purchased one (made sure it was a low profile one as well) but it would not fit in the only open prong thing.

I, too, have been looking for a FireWire card for my Slimline s5120y desktop.  I just spent 35 minutes on the phone, talking to 7 people from HP and no one could help me.
I purchased a low-profile card, but it still did not fit.  I was told I had to go directly to the manufacturer.  Not much luck...
Did you find a place to purchase this card?

Sounds like either the Display or Graphics chip, that will not be cheap to fix. Because it is a 2006 and getting on in years, it might be best to move whatever you want to keep over to your newer iMac using Firewire Target Disk Mode and let it rest in peace.

  • Power Mac Video Capture card for G5 Quad

Can anyone direct me to where I can get a video capture card for my Power Mac G5 Quad.
I would like to directly connect my DVD player to my G5.
Can I do this and what do I need and where can I get it. Thank you for your guidance!

Canto makes a nice firewire video digitizer for under $ 200 that will handle full (non-HD) resolution video. If you already have a mini-dv camera or can find a used one cheap (maybe one where the tape transport is bad) you can connect the camera to your G5 via Firewire, and then use the camera's auxiliary video and audio inputs to connect the source you want to digitize.

It's that last sentence I'm curious about.  "However a MacPro already has much more capability already built in than Thunderbolt can add."
I'm thinking of getting a Mac Pro, but see that it doesn't seem to have Thunderbolt. I'm not sure if I care. The reason for the Mac Pro is that I'm topping out my 8gb RAM 27" iMac capacity with the volume of work going through it, and my tech tells me I'm pushing it too hard.  I use it to run a small law office, but usually have about 15 apps open, with lots going on in the network in the background.
Is there any reason to wait until Apple puts Thunderbolt into the Mac Pro?
Thunderbolt will not increase the performance capability of the MacPro. It will add a bus that can be convenient, especially later on when Thunderbolt devices become more common, more mature and better supported - oh, and with more common will come less costly. From a pure performance standpoint the existing PCIe slots are much more capable and cheaper to implement. You would be giving up nothing with a current MacPro.
My opinion. Thunderbolt is really a great move forward in the long run - needed something to replace Firewire and this is it. But there is no reason to wait on Thunderbolt on MacPro - it is redundant.

  • Sound card for logic

hey guys, I want to get a sound card for my macbook pro.. preferably as cheap as possible because the only thing I want to hook up is my alesis 3630 compressor (what cables will I need?)..
Im new to hardware, so any information is appreciated!
    Cheers,
    James

    k,
sorry i meant audio card**.. I have a macbook pro 15inch, purchased new 3 months ago.. I want a sound card that is mac compatible.. I'm currently thinking about the Focusrite Saffire LE Firewire Audio Interface.. however its $500 AUD.. I'm only using the sound card to hook up monitors and my alesis compressor, so the Focusrite doesn't seem to be the smartest option..
so my question is, what sound card would you recommend for my mac, preferably Firewire but USB should be fine! and once I have that, is it easy for the mac to recognise the hardware compressor in logic?
    Cheers guys,

  • Help with purchasing video card for my G5

hi i would like to get a new faster graphics card for my g5. i have a 1.6 ghz g5 and i have the stock 64 mb geforce fx 5200 and would like to get something faster that is agp. i do most of my work in vector programs such as flash and illustrator, photoshop and do light after effects work also. any recommendations would be appreciated especial the one where i can get more bang for my buck! thanks!

I wonder why the opposite happens to us Mac owners. When the PC spec becomes obsolete, graphic cards are still being produced at a cheaper price. When it's for the Mac, they stop producing the cards effectively hiking up the price.
Considering the rarity of these cards for the Mac and the initial price offering they had of USD500-600, I think USD300-400 selling price for a card that can help revive the computer somehow is a good deal.
And that OWC link for USD330 may be steep, but it's not even available.
An option is to flash the PC card with a Mac firmware. If you want to go OEM route, then there is no other option.
Even eBay is leading the pack in prices with sales above USD400.00 for the Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL. In fact I just checked eBay today and see another similar card being sold. The way things are heading, looks like every incarnation of the card will bring it back to the original price when it was released. Wow.
