Cheap training && certification for university students ?

Hello!
I remember landing upon a page on Sun's site about free courses for developers with a membership. If memory serves me correctly, it was around $40 US for a student membership. I can't seem to find any information about a current offer like this.
I suppose I should say I am mostly insterested in learning Java SE development through self-study resources.
edit: Are there any such opportunities now that Oracle has acquired Sun, or have I missed the boat?

Timothy

  • Which Apple laptop is most appropriate for university students?

I just purchased a 15.4" MacBook Pro for university, which I am starting for the first time in the fall. After having received it however I have my doubts if I chose the right one - weight and size being some of my biggest concerns, along with battery life. The model I have has a 2.53 GHz i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, a 500 GB ATA drive @ 7200 rpm and a hi-res antiglare display. I believe going down to the 13" would also mean going to a lower resolution, glossy display which I have concerns about.
I will be majoring in English, taking for the most part humanities and arts classes, so my computer needs for school would be mostly word processing and presentations - I will be purchasing either iWork or Office to use. I will watch movies and TV shows from time to time, but I don't think the smaller screen size would bother me as I watch them all the time on my iPod touch. I have a fairly extensive music collection and have photos and home videos as well.
As well, after my four-year English degree I will be getting a Masters degree in book publishing, which will require becoming familiar with Adobe Creative Suite 5. I won't be working with these programs in the next four years, but after that my computer will need to be able to handle working with the Suite.
I would be extremely grateful for any opinions - switch to the less powerful but more portable 13", or stick with the 15"?

I appreciate your dilemma. I recently bought a new 15" MBP to replace an older one. While making decisions, I wondered about the smaller screen (size/weight) but stuck with the 15" as it is easier to work with.
You can add to any of the notebooks with an extra monitor (not too dear these days) for graphics work when needed; and as you have arts courses the screen area may help with better appreciation of any works you view.
As regards presentations, the medium of the presentation display is a large screen, but the resolution and size are limited by the projector (using Displays Preferences you can play with this for the best display). Colours also are changed by these devices, so it would be worth taking time to calibrate.
The main reason I would suggest that you make no change for now is that you already have this computer in your hands. Switching now would need data transfers and a (relatively small) learning curve. The machine specs are a bit above what most university students have or need in my opinion, but changing now would cost you (unless you can get a good deal) and there is the data question (above). The power requirements of the Adobe product also suggest the current machine is a better bet (although in 4 years time I would be thinking of a change anyway). Stay with the 15"

  • Macbook Pro versus Air for university student (pharmacy)

    Hey everyone,
So I love all my Apple products, and I plan to get some sort of Mac laptop for university in a few weeks. I'm going to be a pharmacy student at UBC, (so I'm not going into design or video graphics or anything) I basically want a fast, reliable computer that will last the extent of my Bachelor's degree, I really don't want to be replacing one every year or so. Battery life is somewhat important. I'm trying to decide between the MacBook Pro, (the $1200 one?) and the newer Macbook Air, (about $1200 as well?).
    Any input is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks guys.

I'd agree with Kappy, especially if buying for a long haul like a 3 or 4 year degree program.  A MBP is the better choice.
And don't necessarily feel that pharmacy won't have its own computationally intensive aspects either.  Large databases, especially chemical and drug structural databases and such, can be fairly tasking in terms of cpu use and RAM and harddrive space.
Don't forget your education discount options - http://www.apple.com/ca/buy/hied/ and ask at the UBC bookstore if they offer any machines with 3year AppleCare options (some educational institutions can do this for machines purchased through them - gives you 4 years of total warranty coverage).
    P.S. I did my M.Sc. at U.Vic in the 1990's - I loved the west coast!

  • Best Macbook for university students?

Hi there, I will be going to university later this year and am hoping to take advantage of the apple store's "back to school scheme" to buy a new laptop.
I will be doing a business economics degree so laptop will primarily be used for:
    - Word processing, writing notes/papers etc.
    - Surfing the internet (research/more casual use eg twitter etc)
    - iPhoto (personal use)
I don't tend to use any "professional" applications or anything so I am debating whether to go for a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air.
Aside from price, which would you recommend as the best laptop for a university student?
    Thanks!

  • How do I install an App on 200 iPods for University Students

What kind of options are there for installing the same app (a free app) on 200 different iPod Touches?
We have 200 new iPod touches that we need to get into the hands of 200 nursing students. We would like to load the Skyscape Resources app on each of the iPod Touches before giving them to the students.
We have a computer lab with 50 windows xp computers. Each student has their own network login.
So, is it possible to install the app for the students ahead of time or do they each need to create / sign into their own iTunes account first? Do they then have to use that same computer whenever they want to sync or can they use any of the computers in the lab?
    How do I do this?
Thanks ahead of time for your consideration in this matter.

Hopefully you already know about Apple's Education websites; but in case you don't start at http://www.apple.com/education
http://www.apple.com/education/leaders-administrators/mobile-learning.html may be a starting point to address your issue. I know at a recent NSBA (National School Boards Association) I attended there was a presentation on using touches in the classroom. Good luck!

  • FCPX Associate Certification For Students

    Help!
I teach video production at a high school career center (formerly known as vocational schools) and have been using FCPX for video editing. I'd like to be able to offer the Associate Certification to my students and am wondering if there is any way other than the one-at-a-time, pay-as-you-go system currently available for individuals. We used to be able to buy vouchers from Prometic for FCP7 Level 1 Certification and test them here at school as we are a testing center for a bunch of their certifications. I suspect we could still do this for FCPX Level 1 Certification but the Associate Certification is actually better suited to most of my student's needs and abilities.
I can't find anywhere to contact anyone from Apple about education/academic questions. At some point I may look into AATCE status as we are an all Mac lab with nearly 80 workstations that comply with most, if not all, of the facility requirements, but right now, I'd love to just contact a human being associated with any sort of educational program at Apple.
So, where can I get official answers from Apple reps to questions that concern academic/educational programs?

Only Apple Authorized Training Centers (AATCs) and Apple Authorized Training Centers for Education (AATCEs) can purchase the Final Cut Pro Level One and Associate Level exams in bulk. A site license is also available for eligible AATCEs for the Associate Level exam. These exams are not available at Prometric testing centers. • Some thoughts on the dearth of training materials for the new MCSE certifications

Mostly this is venting... while it would be nice to see some remediation, I have no such expectations.
Given that Windows Server 2012 was GA 15 months ago, I'm severely disappointed at the lack of published training guides targeted to the MCSA and MCSE certifications (most notably the 70-413 and 70-414), and specifically with respect to the objectives involving
System Center that are included in those examinations.
I used the Exam Ref by Steve Suehring, and frankly was quite disappointed, although I'm not sure whether to blame the book, or the question pool on the exam. What I did observe was that a significant percentage of the concepts discussed in the Exam Ref book,
and ostensibly in the objectives for the exam, were not actually touched at all by the exam. More significantly, I encountered concepts on the exam that were not even mentioned in the Exam Ref. Presumably the Training Guide (700 pages) will go into much more
detail (e.g. the exam I encountered seemed very heavy with respect to Active Directory Site design), but it won't be available until April (at the earliest).
Further, there's nothing available in the realm of preparation materials for the 70-414. The Exam Ref was supposed to be available in September 2013. (The O'Reilly site says March 2014, but the MS Exam Page is not yet updated.) Who knows when it
will really be available, and I don't even see a mention of an actual Training Guide for this exam.
Adding insult to injury, I bought into the special last spring to take the -417, -413, and -414 (which expires tomorrow), and have been unsuccessful at passing the -413 (due to the poor prep materials) and didn't even consider the -414 (due to the non-existent
prep materials).  Frankly, I feel very ripped off -- (And if the actual questions on the -413 compared to the Exam Ref are any guide, I'm not particularly encouraged by the eventual availability of the -414 Exam Ref.)
I do see where there's still a discount package available (including 2nd shots) for the MCSE: Server Infrastructure ($255 for both exams plus 2nd shots), available until May 31, 2014-- and expire on December 31, 2014. I think I'll wait until May and see
if [a] the -413 Training Guide gets published and [b] what the "master plan" will be for training for the -414.
Btw.. it seems the prospects are no better for the MCSE: Private Cloud exams either.

For post-production and audio work, having a quieter computer is one of the reasons I ordered a Mac Pro - quieter is good. And as my MDD dual 867Mhz is now as long in the tooth as I am, it couldn't come at a better time. I was really contemplating buying a quad G5 the past 6 months, but then heard the professional desktop would come out during the developer's conference, and I'm glad I waited. The price is absolutely - and insanely - great. Mine should be here on the 15th, and I'll be counting the hours. As for the risers, I'm willing to endure a few nanoseconds as a trade-off.

  • How much do I get discount for macbook if I am university student ?

HI, i am an university student , and I consider to buy a Macbook intel core i5, so how much do I get discount for it ?

Frederic's link will apply if you're attending a US university. If you're in another country, go to your country's online Apple Store and see if you see a link to an Education Store. If you don't see one, or if you don't have an online Apple Store at all, then Apple does not offer education discounts in your country.
    Regards.

  • Is training mandatory for these two certifications?

    Hallo!
I am planning to take 1Z0-803 exam to obtain Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 7 Programmer certification before the end of July and 1Z0-047 to become Oracle Database: SQL Certified Expert possibly by the end of the year. But I have just learned that some developer's certifications now require training. Does it apply to these two as well, or I can just pass the exams to get certified?
    Thank you!
    Edited by: user7774225 on 20.06.2012 4:46

both Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 7 Programmer and Oracle Database: SQL Certified Expert doesn't require official Oracle training. For SQL Expert there is a study guide released and for Java SE 7 Programmer I there will be End of 2012 a study guide on the market.

  • Can I attend Oracle 10g DBA course & attempt DBA Certification for 11g

    Hi,
I am already OCP-PLSQL and want to attempt OCP-DBA stream. I enquired at various oracle education centers and came to know that all are conducting courses for Oracle-10g.
So can I attend Oracle 10g DBA course (Mandatory Course) and attempt DBA Certification for 11g. (1ZO-052 and 1ZO-053)

    Thanks,
Vikrant PatilYou can do these thing, and Oracle will take your money for it, but you will receive neither 11g DBA OCP certication nor 10g DBA OCP Certification at the end of it. So it isnt what you would ant to do.
Oracle Unviersity would provide the 11g DBA training courses ... No problem.
however I suspect what you term oracle education centers are probaby institutes offering WDP Courses at 10g DBA (on the cheap). See http://workforce.oracle.com
If you do 10g training then that will only be valid for 10g DBA OCP Certification .. so you would need to take 1z0-042 and 1z0-043 (I guess you already have an SQL Exam pass). Then 1z0-050 can upgrade it to 11g DBA OCP.
(Note that it does not affect you, but the converse is typically true .... version X+1 training will often be acceptable for a version X certification.)
