Cheaper RAM for iMac G5

I was searching and searching for cheap RAM for my iMac. It seems most places sale RAM for Macintosh computers but charge up the butt for it. Mac comps, or atleast the iMac G5, use what should be cheaper CAS3 memory. While searching I found most places were selling 1GB sticks of "Mac" RAM for $130 or more. I found the memory configurator on Patriot Memory's website and found this model stick of 1GB RAM to be compatible with the iMac G5 2Ghz, PSD1G400. I got two pieces shipped for $212 (not from Patriot but a reseller). I found most other websites' memory configurator will have a 1GB stick of "Mac" RAM and then another stick of 1GB CAS3 RAM for alot cheaper but wouldn't confirm the 1GB CAS3 RAM as compatible for Mac. These websites also would not list the specs of the "Mac" RAM. Who knows. The "Mac" RAM might be the same as the other RAM but they just want to sell it for more. I haven't recieved my 2 sticks of RAM yet but I'll keep everyone posted on how it turns out.

Mac-specific RAM was available in recent months for the same price that you have quoted. Apparently RAM prices, both generic and Mac-specific, have risen since then. Prices will fall at some point in the future. I have tried generic RAM in my iMac G5 and had no problem with it. I got a nice sized rebate when I bought it. Some others have claimed to have had problems with generic RAM, however.

  • Where to get cheaper ram for my ibook g3?

    Hello,
is apple the only place where I can get new ram for my ibook g3? Checked their store, 512 ram costs 150 usd. That is expensive enough.
    Thanks in advance.
imac g5 (isight) 20", ibook G3 (white)   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   airport extreme base station

Check out RAMSeeker.com. They will compare different RAM vendors' prices to help you get the best price.
Be sure to buy from a firm that gives you a lifetime warranty on the RAM you buy. While RAM doesn't fail very often, it can happen. Enough vendors give a lifetime warranty that you should not settle for one that doesn't. I would recommend paying a few dollars more if necessary to get the lifetime warranty.

  • Ram for imac intel core 2 duo

where would be a good place to order 2 sticks of 1 gb ram for an imac with a 17" screen and 2.0ghz that isn't like overly high price but the ram is reliable and works good

one more question about the ram on new egg they have
some brands that are under 100 dollars per stick of
1gb of ram like buffalo, g.skill, jetram, centon,
gigaram, and twinmos. Which of these brands if any
would be the best to get like for performance and if
    it will actaully last?
They're all off-brands. There's a reason why those prices aren't just a couple bucks lower, but a lot lower.
What's important is the actual physical handling of the chips by the maker or assembler. The four OEM suppliers have rigorous procedures so that they don't damage their own product before it gets out the door, and then have to pay warranty claim penalties to Apple and other computer manufacturers who buy from them. Their contracts generally have "reverse incentive" penalties that increase along with the rate of failure.
The "retail" makers with less careful in-plant procedures rely on a certain percentage of their customers to forget where they bought it, lose their receipt, or otherwise fail to file a warranty claim. So they actually have an incentive to allow higher failure rates - it's more profitable. Fewer warranty claims means they can afford to sell at a lower price level. A somewhat inferior, or second-rate, product can then both really inflate those profits dramatically, and allow an even lower price.
The only current OEM Apple RAM that I've seen mentioned or have first hand knowledge of is Micron/Crucial, Samsung (can be had from OWC), Hynix, and Nanya. I imagine that each OEM has somewhat different exposure and name recognition in different parts of the world, so here in the U.S. we're more tuned in to Micron/Crucial.

  • Maximum RAM for iMac 2006 5.2 17" C2D

Having followed the discussions on maximum RAM for this model it  appears that 2GB is the maximum possible. I discovered this after purchasing a matching pair of 2GB sticks of RAM :-(
However, as the iMac would not start with the 2 x 2Gb sticks I tried various combinations 1 x 2Gb & 1 x 1Gb, swapping these between the two slots etc etc until the final combination of 1x 2GB and 1 x 256Mb works. I am tempted to purchase a stick of 512mb to see what happens next but I am intrigued as to why the higher combinations do not work, any thoughts on this are welcome.
All the memory is DDR2 667MHz but the combination that works has the 2gb at 2rx8 and the 256Mb at 1rx16.
    Spec of machine is : iMac 2006 5.2 17", C2D 1.83ghz, 24x Combodrive, 10.6.8

I would use 2 x 1GB, as the Intel architecture runs just a little faster with matched memory (around 3%-5%).
While 2GB + 256MB boots, have you looked to see what the system is showing as available memory?

  • Corsair Ram for iMac late 2013

    Hi,
    I got a new iMac 27" late 2013, and bought 32GB Ram somewhere else. It's 4x8GB Corsair Mac Memory DDR3 1600MHz PC3 12800 (CMSA16GX3M2A1600C11).
I got several Kernel Panics, but only with the Corsair Ram. Everything seems to work fine if I use the original 8GB hynix.
Memtest shows no problems with the Corsair Rams at all...
My questions: Am I right to suggest that the Corsair Ram is causing the Problem, altough memtest shows no problems? If yes, should I return the faulty RAMs and get the same as replacement or would you suggest different RAMs? If yes, which ones?
Here's the Diagnostic Report from after the last Kernel Panic:

I'd like to Order via Amazon (it's the easiest way for me) but I'm not sure which one.
Would someone help me to decide?
This one seems to be officially compatible with the iMac late 2013: http://www.amazon.de/Crucial-memory-PC3-12800-1600MHz-Macbook/dp/B008LXX9OC
But this one is cheaper, and the technical Data seems to be the same, but I read already bad ratings about them: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B008PSEHAS/

  • Can I Use DDR3 RAM for iMac 7,1 Memory Upgrade?

I'm sorry if this is a silly quesyion but I cannot find an answer anywhere so I thought I would ask here.  My iMac (mid 2007) has the following specs:
    Model Name:          iMac
    Model Identifier:          iMac7,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors:          1
    Total Number Of Cores:          2
    L2 Cache:          4 MB
    Memory:          1 GB
    Bus Speed:          800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version:          IM71.007A.B03
    SMC Version (system):          1.20f4
Yesterday, from the Apple Store, I ordered an Apple Memory Module 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 (PC3-10600) - 2x2GB.  In the Apple Store it said that this was compatible with all computers shown so I assumed it would be okay with my mid 2007.
From further reading it seems that I will not be able to use this memory and that I should have purchsed 4GB 667MHz DDR2 instead.  Is this correct?  Will I be able to use the DDR3 that I have purchased or will I need to get the DDR2?
I tried to cancel the order but it was too late.  I should have researched it properly first.
    Cheers for any advice.
    TJ

You will not be able to use the ram you ordered.  You need to return it and purchase ram that is
200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  Also, don't purchase ram from the Apple store, they overcharge for it.  Look to order ram from a vendor such as Crucial or OWC.

  • How to upgrade ram for iMAC 21.5" i5 mid 2011

I recently purchased a 2-4 8GB ram kit for my iMac. Unfortunately, I ordered the wrong kit, one for a mid 2012, rather than one for my mid-2011.
I'd like to get some advice before I buy another kit.
My mid-2011 iMAC came with 4GB (2x2). That is nearly full now (~3.8 GB). I had thought an 8GB update (a 2x4 kit) would cover my needs. Unfortunately, I ordered and received the kit intended for a mid 2012. Okay, chalk it up to excerience. Experience also tells me to ask for help--HELP!

It also answered my first question.
Now that I'm feeling a bit more confident, I'll ask one more:
Maybe instead of adding two  4G sticks, I'd like to considder replacing the existing 4G (2 2x2s) with four 4G sticks. Is there a limit to how much ram the rest of the computer can support?
Thanks again for the prior reply, And thanks to OWC for the clear and simple video!

I've seen a limited selection of 1GB PC2-5300 677MHz ram modules for sale at other electronic's retailers like BestBuy, Office Max and Staples.
But by far the best deal is the 2GB kit at OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/53DR2SPAIR2G/
The Early Core Duo has a 2GB ram limit, 2 1GB ram modules and the iMac's are user upgradable.

  • RAM for iMac Intel

can anyone advise me about purchasing RAM card for my 4,1 iMac?  it is an Intel Core Duo 2 GHz processor; 667 MHz bus speed 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM installed in one of the slots (the other is currently empty).  i believe that the max is 2 GB so i would be adding 1 GB to the open slot.
i also have a MacBook 1,1 Intel Core Duo running with similar specs -- 2 GHz processor speed; 667 MHz bus speed; total 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM  (256 MB in each slot).  i am planning to purchase a pair of 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM to max it to 2 GB.
both Macs are OS X 10.4.11 and i want to upgrade to 10.6 -- i know that Snow Leopard requires at least 1 GB RAM to install.
can i purchase the same RAM cards for both my iMac and MacBook?
    thank you!

    Susan,
You can visit www.crucial.com and they have a RAM configuration tool that will help you with your iMac and Macbook. If you are still unsure you can also call OWC (www.macsales.com) and they can help you locate their correct RAM too. Both suppliers are reputable, I tend to like OWC for their pre & post sales support, prices and the fact that they specialize in Macs.

  • Is Hynix an original RAM for iMac?

I bought an iMac in Houston Texas on september 2006, almost two years ago. I had some problems with it so I took it to a support office. When they gave it back to me, I opened the memory slot to put another RAM I had inside, ant I'm pretty sure the memory in it was NOT the original, but I can't remember like 150% sure. The RAM was Hynix brand. Question is...
Does this memory -Hynix, made in Korea- possibly be in an original iMac, or they don't use this brand on iMac original factories? If it's not, then I can be sure I was 'stolen' -or 'exchanged'- and the original iMac RAM being replaced for a crappy one instead of the one who came along with it when I bought it, brand new.
Does anyone know about this, or where can I find out? Is Hynix RAM supported and released in original iMacs?
    Thanks in advance!

Hello msimonovic, and welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes, my (Jan 06) Early Core Duo was shipped with a Hynix 512MB ram module from the factory.

  • RAM Memory for iMac 27' (Late 2012)

    Hi,
I have read a lot of discussions about what's the best option to upgrae the RAM for the iMac 27' (Late 2012), but I really don't know what should I buy in terms of compatibility.
    Kingston ? Corsair? ,etc...
I pretend to remove the memory that's on my iMac (2x4GB) and install new ones 4X8GB=32GB, so, my question is, which brand should I buy, and also what about the voltage(1.3, 1.5) and latency (CL7, CL9, CL10, CL11...)?
    Thank's

If you will go to either OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial, their sites will help you determine what you need.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac
Use OWC's instructions to find your model identifyer. Their RAM has been tested and is guaranteed.
I would not recommend cheap brands or Value RAM.

  • Which system for iMac 400MHz 384MB RAM?

    Hello,
I'm going to buy old iMac with 400MHz G3, 384MB RAM and 10GB HDD. Please, what is your experience with Jaguar/Panther/Tiger on such computer? Which one is most suitable/swift? I'd like to do programming most (Xcode), no extreme audio/video.
    Thank you for your answers

When buying a used iMac G3 refer to this table - it will give you a good idea whether the specs on ebay are bull or not - it especially helps in finding out the exact colour of iMac you're getting and the VRAM/Video card etc. For example there never was a 500MHz iMac with CD-ROM (unless the owner built it to order).
First question. I've never had any success with booting form an external USB device - it's worth a go though!
If not; use the Media Exchange Programme from Apple to exchange your Tiger DVD for CDs.
Second question: iMac Slot Loaders have 2 x PC100 168pin DIMM slots under a fold open cover (no screw driver required - just a coin!). In my experience, under OS 9, I used to throw in any old cheap RAM - bought from anywhere cheap (I was at Uni at the time - and my house mates (PC owners) and I would chop and change computer parts all over! The final state I maxed it out with 1Gb of PC133 RAM from Crucial and my mother is now using that machine at university . Personally I've found newer Macs (i.e. iMac G4 is my latest) and OS X to be more fussy when it comes to RAM. I would recommend buying from a Mac friendly supplier if you plan on using OS X.
It needn't be much more expensive (- and you'll get it half the price we pay over here). Check out RAMSEEKER for good prices. Obviously living this side of the world I have no real experience of their service - but it is reputed to be good!
Before you install OS X on an iMac G3 for the first time you must update the firmware (whilst booted in OS 9.1).
    Hope this helps.

  • What's the best quality and cheapest 1GB RAM seller for iMac Intel?

I am looking to buy a 1GB RAM chip for my iMac Intel. However, this can be very expensive when bought straight from Apple. Where else can I get 1GB of RAM for a cheap price that will give me the quality I am looking for?
iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Currently have 512 MB RAM on iMac

Yes, you can successfully use a single 1Gb module. You can just as well add a second one that isn't matched. However, it should be very easy to match RAM modules without buying the second one from Apple. To be "matched" they must both be same speed, same size, same number of component chips on both sides.
Size is easy, both 1GB. Speed is easy, both PC2-5300 667MHz. Component chips - little black square or rectangular chips attached to one or both sides of the board. Count the number on each side of the board and duplicate that configuration and the two modules, one from Apple and one from xyz company, will be "matching" RAM. If there are 4 on the front and 4 on the back, buy another like that. If there are 8 on one side, and none on the other, buy another like that.

  • Max ram for 2.4ghz 2008 model intel imac 24"?

      Hi.
Im trying to get the max ammount of ram in my imac 24" 2008 model aluminum body i believe. it has 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo. and its running mac os x 10.5.8
I want to get the highest ammount of ram my machine can handle. I know apple says 4gb is max, but im wondering if anyone has put in 8gb and it works?
also could you tell me what the ram is called exactly so I can type it in to amazon and find the correct kind. Please help me on this issue! I want the MAXIMUM ram for my imac!!! Thanks all!
Also, would it be worth upgraded to snow leopard? Im new to macs and dont know if that would make a difference? Give me your opinions on this and I'll do as you say for you are more knowledgable then I at macs! thanks again.
And what all can I download for my machine in terms of operating systems to make it the most current my machine can run at? can I install lion after leopard on my machine?

The maximum you can put in is 6GB, that is all that machine can address. WWW.MacSales.com (OWC) makes a 6GB kit and I'd recommend purchasing from them. Your machine could be a late 2007 or mid (began shipping in April) 2008. You will need to check the specifications which you can find in your owners manual or click Support in the upper right of this page then click Tech Specs. OWC is the only vendor I know that makes a 6GB kit however if you have the correct specs you can make your own, a 1x2GB DIMM and a 1X4GB DIMM. You don't mention where on the planet you're located, OWC is a US company but will ship overseas.
