  • How to solve the noise issue when connecting an electric guitar?

    Hello,
I own a 15'' MacBook Pro of early 2011, with Lion Mac OS X 10.7.2
I have an issue when connecting my electric guitar (Guitar Rig 4 LE) via USB & starting the Garageband '11 (ver. 6.0.4). I tried playing with the settings to get around the fuzziness/noise that's produced when the guitar is connected.
The original software I got with Guitar Rig 4 ALSO had a similar issue, but I solved it by turning down the ''Gate'' volume to get a clear guitar sound. I tried looking for a similar thing on Garageband but no luck. I'm taking the online lessons via Garageband, with all that noise it makes it even harder to learn.
Hope I made my case clear, and I'm looking forward for any suggestions in this technical problem I'm facing.
    Cheers

Hey Keith, thanks for your response.
Well, to be honest I had no idea what that was, so I opened Garageband and looked for that option, and it seems I can't access it during the guitar lessons. I tried exiting the lessons to the main window but the option you talked about under the ''Track'' tab was still faded (i.e. inaccessible).
Did I misunderstand you or done it wrong?
The noise even gets WORSE when trying out the Rock Guitar lessons, not so bad on the Basic Guitar & Blues Guitar...
By the way, I did try the ''Aggregate'' Audio MIDI setup thingy from the utilities to enable both ''Built-in Output'' & ''USB PnP Sound Device (which is the guitar)" and didn't solve the problem.
Running out of options. Opt for surgery? haha jk

  • How to play electric guitar through garageband

    Hi,
Macbook Pro mid 2009 running OSX 10.10
    GarageBand 10.0.3
I have seen on the internet that it is possible to connect my electric guitar to my Macbook Pro and then use the Amps and effects in GarageBand to produce different sounds and effects from my guitar.
I have tried with a couple of different cables (standard 1/4" with an adapter as well as a Rocksmith USB cable), but GarageBand is not producing any sound.
I have repeatedly checked my input and output Sound settings, the cables, making sure I have the cables plugged in properly, but still nothing.
I've been working on this for a week and I'm stumped!
    Help appreciated.
    Regards,
    Jim P.

You are going to need a USB audio interface. There are so many good ones you can't go wrong with any of the newest big name interfaces. I personally like interfaces that are at least 2 in 2 out  with both a ¼" and a XLR input. This way you can record instrument or mic or both at the same time.

  • I'm using my electric guitar with GarageBand. With the input/output jack being full of my guitar cord, does anyone know if I can rig a BlueTooth speaker for output? Thanks in advance for any response.

    yes this will work
you can also get a splitter cable that goes in to your in/out port so you can have 2 (or more) separate ports

  • How do I connect an Electric guitar to a Mac by Firewire?

Please forgive my lack of technical knowledge, I don't play guitar so the terminology is way beyond me. I am trying to find the best (and economical as in value for money) way to connect a guitar to an Intel Mac mini via Firewire port.
My daughter is getting an electric guitar for Christmas (Cort MGM-1) and a Roland Cube amp. She's been playing acoustic for five years already and is very good on guitar (now studying Grade 4). She will most likely want to record her guitar playing into software on the Mac, and I wondered what the experts here would recommend as being worth looking at.
Apple has a few pages given over to this here
    http://www.apple.com/pro/techniques/connectingguitar/
which mentions using analogue via the mic input, or digital using an "interface" but the problem I find is they only recommend USB connections, and these are pretty expensive anyway. Still, if that's the price, so be it. I would prefer to use Firewire over USB every time, if possible.
The Roland website says you can connect the guitar directly to the Mac with a cable from the amp, but threads I have read and help I have so far received on a Mac magazine forum indicate the need for a separate "audio interface" and others talk of needing a pre-amp. I am getting confused! Is the Roland amp not also a pre-amp.interface itself?
My budget is pretty low now too (actually it's been exceeded, but I'm aware of the "Buy cheap, buy twice" argument and want to think ahead. Her sister plays Flute and Clarinet and they both sing, if that is any help.
I know there are some really professional and top grade experts on this forum, and I would welcome your suggestions, recommendations and opinions. Please help me work out what to do!
    TIA

Thanks a lot to everyone for such a wide range of ideas. I've spent most of the day researchng them, and it is confusing. Now we have a number of options that also include software, eg ProTools or Cubase LE 4 or Ableton or some other program. That means even more research! And won't that double up what we are already doing with Garage Band or Logic? SOrry, I'm just a poor Sax player used to playing the dots, unamplified!
One big reason to go with Firewire (apart from its just better anyway) is the USB ports are pretty full on the Mac IIRC but the Firewire is totally unused.
As for plugging the cable straight in the back of the Mac into the Analog In port, that would only allow a single stereo input or two mono ones, and that could be limiting. I agree though that it would allow for something to be done pretty immediately.
I liked the Shure mic recommendation, I hadn't thought of that but it was extremely useful information which was great for you to add in. Very wise advice. Not sure if its a condensor mic or not, and not really sure why a condensor mic is supposed to be better. They are more expensive though but nothing in this world should be acquired because of price alone IMO; sometimes the minimum cost of something really useful is higher than just the minimum cost of purchase.
When I get one of these interfaces, where in the daisy chain should it be placed?
    Guitar - Amp - Interface - Mac
    OR
    Guitar - Interface - Mac
    OR
    Guitar - Interface - Amp - Mac
    or doesn't it matter?
If it is placed in the chain, should the amp effects be restricted to "Clean" leaving the interface or the software to do the effects, or can you change settings in as many places as wanted? I am guessing this is only a question when connecting to the Mac?
Sorry to ask so many questions, as you can see, I am getting hold of bits of ideas here and there, but there are still big gaps in my understanding. You've all brought me forwards a lot since this morning, I owe you all a great big thank you!
To sum up (please correct me where I am wrong or incomplete) what I am looking for then is an Analog to Digital converter with a Firewire (or USB perhaps) connection to the computer. These come in different flavours, often with "free" software, and can add effects in the computer just like some amps can. They all cost something like £100 to £200 upwards (same price as the amp really) and are in effect "amps for the computer" - or is that totally wrong?
As I said, I value your input and corrections.
    TIA

  • What do I need to connect my electric guitar to my iMac?

I've searched and searched, and I can't find a 'clear cut' answer.
I have a new 3.2Ghz iMac and use Garageband 08 and plan on purchasing iLife 09.
I just bought a beginner electric guitar and amp (the amp only has line in and headphone jack).
How do I connect my guitar to the iMac? I have heard that using the mini plug into the 'line in' on the back of the iMac isn't ideal. So what do I need to get? My local Sam Ash musicstore doesn't have helpful people, so I need you all to tell me what to buy?
Oh yeah.. I don't have much money, so I just need to be able to play my guitar using Garageband and all its effects.
    Thanks!

I read that it does not boost the sound properly.
The job of that line-in port is not to boost the level, but to convert an analog signal to a digital one, and it does that in a decent manner.
And I've also read that the audio-in on the iMac can cause delays in the sound you hear, along with other strange behavior.
GB always has problems with latency (that's the term for it), and that might indeed be worse when you use the line-in since the computer has to do the conversion and run GB. But the bulk of the CPU load is in GB, especially when you put a lot of effects on the guitar, so don't hope for too much difference when you use an expensive interface.
I can try the headphone out to the audio-in on the back of the iMac, but I guess I'm worried, as I have also read (on here), that you could blow your port if you aren't careful.
You can blow your computer if you use a speaker out, headphones should be fine. Crank them up slowly and watch the signal.

  • What products are available to connect a electric guitar to a IPAD 4 for use with garage band???

what products are availabe to connect an ipad 4 with electric guitar for use with garage band???

I know this will sound a bit snarky but the best source for information is an Internet search. Typing in "connect guitar to iPad" produced pages of products. This one looked interesting to me...

I don't recall if the iPad 4 has the new lightning connector or not. If it does you'll probably need a  30pin-to-lightening adapter.

  • I am trying to run my electric guitar in garageband 11 but there is no options to modify the inputs/outputs to built

There is no option to modify the sound input/output to built-in input or built-in output.  I'm guessing the electric guitar is not being registered.  I am using a 1/8" mono -1/4" mono cable to go directly from the output jack on my electric to the headphone jack on a macbook pro.  How can I get this to work?

When you use an external device for input, GB often automatically selects that same device for output. It's an ease-of-use feature for most external devices. If your device doesn't give you the option to output to speakers/headphones, you don't want GB to do that.
Within GB, go to GB>Preferences, Select the Audio/Midi tab. In the Drop-down under output, choose "Built-in Output" and connect your external speakers/headphones to the Mac's headphone port (Alternately, you could use system preferences to direct your Mac's audio-output to your speakers and select "System Setting" in GB Prefs. The Mac's own speakers aren't going to be nearly as much fun as running it to your big speakers/headphones).
    Hope that makes sense...

  • Connecting Electric Guitar to Garageband on G5 iMac

I've seen other discussions about this, but cannot figure out this seemingly simple process.
-I connected the guitar via 1/4 to 1/8 cables into the "line in" port on the back of the iMac.
-I chose "real instrument" when adding a new track in garageband
-I made sure that the sound input preferences under system preferences correctly states "line in" (and not internal audio/speakers).
-I have the drop down menu set to "Monitor On" and the Sound menu to "Stereo"
(even when I mess with these settings nothing gets recorded).
When I hit record nothing comes through the computer - nothing gets recorded.
Do I need the Griffin iMac or similar device?
    Any suggestions?

it depends which iMac you're using:

  • Is there a way to connect an external hard drive to the iPad 2?

I have a lot of music and movies stored on an external hard drive and want to know if there is a way to get it onto my iPad?

Connect the drive to your computer, add them to ITunes and sync to the iPad.
If you do not want them to copy to your internal drive, iTunes prefs > Advanced.
Uncheck Copy to ITunes media folder when adding to library.

  • I know this is a common question - but is there a way to connect a USB pen drive to the iPad? (See details)

Basically, I just bought a Nexus 7 after growing impatient waiting for the iPad mini.  But the Nexus has a fault, and I'm taking it back next week.  I'm wondering whether to get my money back, or just get another - because it's a pretty good device!
My major big thing about it, is that I can plug a USB pen drive into it with a OTG cable and either just stream pictures, documents or movies - or save them to the Nexus for viewing without a dangly wire to annoy me.  It's great!  However, being an Apple fan - an iPad mini (if it comes out!) would be simpler, because it would sync to iCloud etc.  whereas obviously my Nexus 7 doesn't do this at all.  The only iCloud factor I can access is my mail.  Which isn't a problem, just a prefference.
So, with current iPads - is there a way, without jailbraking the device, to say stream movies to the device through a USB pen drive/external HDD, and save them to the iPad?
I've seen ways on YouTube but thought it was best to ask here.
If this was possible, I'd swap the Nexus for the iPad mini straight away - the Nexus 7 is fantastic!  No problem with it, if it wasn't for iCloud, I'd keep that.
Oh, and as a closing question on the iPad mini/Apple Maps - the Nexus 7 lets you download offline maps, and also you have a GPS which is used even when not on wifi - do you think this will be likely on an iPad mini? I can't see it myself.
It's a sad day for me, when I start to think Google may still have the upperhand on 7" tablets, even after the iPad mini is released.  I might even wait for the Second generation (if it exists!) - just because I for some reason never like first generation things from Apple.
But anyway, that's a lot of questions and info!
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, fair enough.  But since Job's death - Apple's control on leaks has been terrible.  I got the new iPhone, and I like it - but it hasn't made nearly as big as an impression as previous ones.  Because of the vast ammount of leaks.  With the iPad mini leaks, it's 99% sure to come out next week.
Apple uses many manufacturers and it's massive also websites prefer to report on Apple whether true or false because it brings more hits.
Amd by "others" I meant other people on iPads - not other devices/manufacturers.  It's possible to do so, I just want to know how.  I honestly don't think we'll ever be in a Post-PC era until all tablets allow us to use USB in the way computers do.
No, USB is not the future, you missed the memo about cloud and wireless computing?

  • Can't hear my electric guitar in garageband, I've read all prior posts-.

And I want to play sooooo bad!!
    Here's my set up:

(headphone output) 1/8 to 1/4 to guitar amp (I can hear anything else on my MBP through the amp)
Preferences: Audio/MIDI- Output is set to built in
                                             Input set to USB
Input Source is Mono 1 track link USB interface

I can see my noise in the green, but hear nothing.

  • Problems recording electric guitar in Garageband

I'm fairly new to using Garageband. I have Garageband 09 on my Macbook Pro. I'm playing a Fender Telecaster and a Stratocaster and am going through an Edirol (USB) interface and using Guitar Rig 4 plugins for amp modeling.
I'm running into a few problems that I don't understand how to solve and am hoping someone can offer some help or advice.
First, when going through the Edirol, I notice that the Recording Level setting on the Track Info pane on the far right of the screen is not active. I'm assuming the Edirol interface is over-riding this. Is that normal when using an interface?
I use the input level knob on the Edirol to control the volume when I record (because the Recording Level is not active) and I keep it fairly low (about level 3). When I record the track using a clean guitar sound I watch the meter on the track pane on the left side of the arrange window. I adjust the settings so it never goes into red, and I watch to make sure it doesn't.
Then when I play back what I've recorded, it jumps into the red in a few spots.
I'm baffled by that. Is there any explanation and fix for this?
Also, the recording of the song (with drum loops and vocals on it) has some clicks or sounds like a scratchy phonograph needle. I thought it might be the sound breaking up from distortion, but they don't always correspond to when the meters hit the red zone.
What are these sounds, why are they appearing and how can I avoid/get rid of them?
Lastly, just about every amp setting using Guitar Rig 4 and Garageband's own amp models that have distortion (I use distortion on lead parts at times) have a terrible level of hiss and noise.
I've tried using the noise gate to get rid of it, but, while it silences the hiss and noise when you're not actually playing anything, the hiss is still very present when you are.
Also, if the noise gate is set too high, it kills any sustain. And the hiss is still there anyway when playing, although it's a bit less.
Is there some explanation for this, and any solutions? How can I get rid of this noise/hiss and still have a great sounding lead with sustain?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any help.

First, when going through the Edirol, I notice that the Recording Level setting on the Track Info pane on the far right of the screen is not active. I'm assuming the Edirol interface is over-riding this. Is that normal when using an interface?
    Yes, that's how it works!
When I record the track using a clean guitar sound I watch the meter on the track pane on the left side of the arrange window. I adjust the settings so it never goes into red, and I watch to make sure it doesn't.
It's perfectly fine for the recording level to go into the read, actually that's what you want. Just make sure it never clips (the two little dots at the end of the meter scale lighting up).
Then when I play back what I've recorded, it jumps into the red in a few spots.
I'm baffled by that. Is there any explanation and fix for this?
Recording level and playback level are two different things. The latter depends on how you set your track's volume. Turn it down if it clips (again, red is fine.)
Maybe other people can comment on your distortion problems!
