Cheapest Way to Fix sticky keys?

Spilled some orange juice on my Macbook Pro and did my best to pull the keys out, clean them, and pop them back in. Most of them are still sticky and in the process of cleaning I busted a couple keys. I took it in to the Genius Bar and hoped they could just pop a few replacement keys on. Mainly I just need  F6 and Space Bar replaced but he said that I would need to send it in and it would cost something like $1200. I spilled pop on the keyboard before and took it in and the guy took it in the back and popped in a couple replacement keys for me. No big deal, in and out. Now they want me to replace the whole top case and he explained how its not just the keys that are sticky it's the whole "mechanism". I know that liquid damage isnt covered but is there a better way to do this?

If you get it fixed outside of Apple's list of authorized repair agents you void any of the manfacturer's warranty that you have left. ANd I'm not sure if the terms of service allows us to help you do that.
Just bear in mind, you get what you pay for and if  your cheap fix bricks it, then you're not only out the money you're out the iPad because Apple is highly unlikely to even touch a device that's out of warranty (since 'unauthorized' people have touched it, Apple would not be out of line to refuse to fix it since they can't be held liable for the potential shoddy job done by unauthorized people - not calling your guys shoddy, just saying Apple won't trust their workmanship)
What you got when you got it fixed in the APple store is that you paid for them to swap out your broken unit with a new or refurbished unit...you basically paid a reduced price to exchange broken for not broken.

i dropped my ipod in the pool and put it in rice for three days and the screen just stays white now. what is the cheapest way to fix thiss?

There are companies that specialize in data retrieval but it's costly (probably cheaper to buy a new iPod) and more than likely as Allan said, your circuits are probably damaged beyond all hope of retrieving anything. It's worth calling Apple you maybe able to get a discount or a refurbished iPod. Can't hurt to ask, Good luck. (And in the future... no texting in the john.) Sorry, couldn't resist it.

Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications. However, an iPad that has failed due to contact with liquid may be eligible for out-of-warranty service.

    Hi, Britni.
Apple can replace the keyboard. If your MacBook is still covered by AppleCare Protection Plan, the repair may even be free.

  • I have a an early 2009 13" macbook that had water spilled on it, whats the cheapest way to fix it?

I had water spill on my macbook and it shorted out.  the macbook will turn back on but it must be plugged into power, won't run from battery.  also the ethernet port is out on it.  not sure what else isn't working.

when water is spilled on a mac, do the following:
    Turn it off IMMEDIATELY
Remove the battery if the battery is user removable
Call an Apple store or AASP and make an appointment for evaluation so they can accuratley assess the damage and provide and estimate...no one in here can tell you the extent of the damage since we don't physically have the mac.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

If your phone is not covered by the warranty anymore, Apple will replace it for a new device, same model and size, if you are willing to pay the service fee.
If you decide to get a 3rd party company to do the repair, Apple will not service your phone anymore after that.
    Out-of-warranty repair service
If your repair isn’t covered by Apple’s One Year Limited Warranty, AppleCare+, or AppleCare Protection Plan, your iPhone might be eligible for out-of-warranty service. For example, liquid damage isn’t covered by warranty but might be eligible for out-of-warranty service. Some damage isn’t eligible at all, for example if your device has been broken into multiple pieces. See Apple’s Repair Terms and Conditions for complete details.

Plugins usually are installed externally to Firefox. However, you can disable them in Firefox so that Firefox does not use them.
SearchReset is supposed to automate the task of resetting certain preferences, but you still can edit them manually if necessary.
    '''''Address Bar Search'''''
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the filter box, type or paste '''keyword''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Right-click '''keyword.URL''' and choose Reset. This should restore Google as the default for address bar search.
    Does that work?
    '''''Search Box'''''
Usually it works to choose your preferred search engine from the drop-down. To remove an unwanted search engine plugin, usually the Manage Search Engines... choice at the bottom of the drop-down takes care of it.
    Do either of those work?
There might be another way to hijack that search box; I think some of the other frequent responders probably are more familiar with it than I am.

  • I use a bluetooth headset with iPhone 5 but when I ask Siri to read my email she says I must unlock my phone first.  If I take the phone out of my pocket I might as well just read the email then.  Is there a way to fix this?

I use a bluetooth headset with iPhone 5 but when I ask Siri to read my email she says I must unlock my phone first.  If I take the phone out of my pocket I might as well just read the email from the phone screen.  Is there a way to fix this so the phone doesn't have to be unlocked?

Apple, as I'm sure you know, now manage official phone 'unlocks' directly rather than the Newtork doing so.
When a GSM Network Provider buys a consignment of iPhone's they are locked to that carrier and may only be officially unlocked if said carrier requests it. If so, it is Apple who do this, via iTunes.
I am therefore inclined to think that part of the any generic iTunes syncing process involves the transmission of key hardware data, including IMEI, to Apple whenever the handset is synced.
If this is the case and, as each iTunes account is linked to a credit card, were Apple to maintain a database of genuinely stolen phones (ones reported to Police) they could advise said Police force when a stolen phone stuck its metaphorical head over the parapets once again? They would be able to identify the name & address of the new user.
I have spoken to the Police here in Ireland today and they regularly engage with Apple on such matters.
This may not be tracking as we know it Jim, (not using GSM Triangulation or GPS) but it's arguably even more targetted and leaves an indelible fingerprint of guilt on the thief.
The laws here are simple in this regard, if you are in possession of stolen property, knowlingly or otherwise, you forfeit the goods once the Police show up. Whether you get prosecuted depends on whether you stole the goods or were duped into purchasing them.

  • Has anyone figured out how to get speech recognition working with sticky keys enabled on mountain lion?

I'm trying to use speech recognition to input text on my iMac running the latest mountain lion, 10.8.3.
    I have sticky keys enabled.
When I try to start speaking by pressing the function key twice nothing happens. I can only get it to work if I disable sticky keys.
The same problem occurs with all the other modifier keys as shortcut, they do not work with sticky keys.
When I try to select a different shortcut, I am unable to select a two key combination, but am limited to one.
If I select the F6 key, or any other single key, I am able to start speech recognition. However the second time that I press the key, it does not stop recognition and process my words. Instead, it restarts the recognition.
Has anyone figured out how to get speech recognition working with sticky keys enabled?
Or a way to get an individual key shortcut to start on the first press and process it on the second?
Or a way to get key combinations to work, as specified by the help:
    Dictation On and Off
    To use Dictation, click On.
When you’re ready to dictate text, place the insertion point where you want the dictated text to appear and press the Fn (function) key twice. When you see the lighted microphone icon and hear a beep, the microphone is ready for you to speak your text.
    Shortcut
By default, you press the Fn (Function) key twice to start dictation. If you like, you can choose a different shortcut from the menu.
To create a shortcut that’s not in the list, choose Customize, and then press the keys you want to use. You can press two or more keys to create your shortcut.

I noticed with version 10.8.4 of OS X that I am now able to select F6 to activate, and the return key to complete the speech recognition. This is still different than the description of how these should function that's included in the help, but at least it's an improvement.
