Cheapest way to go wireless.

We just installed a wireless router in our house and I have a Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz (power pc) computer.
I do not have an airport card and I was at the apple store today and they said that it would cost 99 dollars to get the airport extreme card and 30 more to get it installed because if I did it myself I would void my warranty/applecare.
Besides airport cards, what is the cheapest solution for a network adapter for my power mac? Either USB, PCI, or some other sort of network adapter....
I'm looking for specific products that you have used or know that work well.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hello CINEMAnGUY, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 forum!
Er, No. The Airport Extreme card for the pre-dual-core G5s - such as your 1.8 - is explicitly stated by Apple to be a user-upgradable item See "Note" here
http://www.apple.com/support/powermac/doityourself/networking.html
Personally, I prefer good old wired ethernet - as it's faster - especially on the LAN - but if you have to have wireless
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore/
It's under 'Airport & wireless' at 79 USD. The installation instructions are here
http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/apec_c.pdf
USB wireless adaptors are available

But haven't used it myself. Other USB adapters are available.

  • Is there a way to set wireless network priority on iphone? If not, there should be!

Is there a way to set wireless network priority on iphone? If not, there should be! I have a wireless router with dual band signals, as well as an extender at the other end of my home... it would be nice if I could set a priority list so my phone knows to always connect to the 5GHz signal if available, rather than trying to connect to the 2.4GHz signal which is on the other side of the house...

By default, the iPhone will prioritize Wi-Fi over cellular for data and when doing Wi-Fi, will latch on to the strongest signal it can associate (latch on) to. But all that is automatic, there's no evident control for manual adjustments. Other than deleting the Wi-Fi networks you don't like.

  • Cheapest way to get VLK for Windows 8.1 Pro

Usually the cheapest way is 1 8.1 upgrade and 4 server 2012 Cals.
The server cals run about $30ish if I remember correctly.jackwithers wrote:

RegardsThis is true, you will have match Pro to Pro, ect. I believe this set up also involves using KMS to activate.

People report they just buy 4 Windows Vista DVD playback packs, and one Windows 8.1 Pro license, however I cannot seem to find this on the Adviser. If I speak to a Microsoft representative will they offer me the 1x Win 8.1 Pro and 4x Windows Vista Business license. Being able to create one golden image and deploy unattended for various clients would save a lot of time and as a result, money, as staff can...

  • Best way to extend wireless via airport express and time capsule

best way to extend wireless via airport express and time capsule
i live in a two storey house where i use my airport express to create a wireless network in the main floor, and time capsule to extend it in the upper floor, where my room is. i have like 16 mbps in the main floor, and 2-3 mbps in the upper floor after having speediest.
i used time capsule in the upper floor because i use wireless backup daily and don't want to put internet down while i im doin it and consequently my parent can have internet access in the main floor, am i right? or do i have make just the opposite in order to have a good internet speed?
secondly, while checking airport express wireless mode on airport utility, there is like 4 different type of radio mode(802 11n bg comp, 802 11n 2.4, 802 11n a comp, 802 11n 5ghz) which i have no idea what they mean
    what do you recommend?
we have like iphone4, iphone 3g, mbookpro, ipad, ipad 2, samsung tv and a sony vaio laptop in the wireless network
    thank you

What you have would appear to be working but I can comment how I would redefine your setup.  Note that both Airport Express and Time Capsule can function as wireless base stations so you do have wireless everywhere and at all times — using the Time Capsules for backups doesn’t mean your parents won’t have internet access regardless of the where the base stations are located.
You appear to have devices to connect to your network that use the 2.4 GHz band with 802.11g such as the iPhone 3G and perhaps the 5 GHz band with 802.11n such as likely the Macbook Pro if it’s a recent model.  The iPhone 4 can use 5 GHz and 802.11n.  Can’t comment on the Sony and Samsung but you can check their specs.
Now the Time Capsule (if it’s a recent version), can simultaneously supply 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band signals, but the Airport Express (if it’s recent) can only use one of those bands at one time.  Likely the lowest common denominator for your devices is going to be the 2.4 GHz band since the devices that are capable of using 5 GHZ also support 2.4 GHz.  If you don’t use 5 GHz, you won’t lose much in a two-storey home because likely it’s the 2.4 GHz band is better signal anyway because 5 GHz signals drop off quickly with several walls/floors to penetrate.
You also didn’t mention if the Airport Express is used to support a printer and/or AirPlay (using iTunes to play on remote speakers via the Airport Express connection) but that might also be a factor in the best location to place the Airport Express.  Although the printer could be switched between the Time Capsule and the Airport Express if needed, only the Airport Express will support your remote speakers.
Recommend you use the Time Capsule as the Base station.  When using Airport Utility to define the network, after you name your network, etc., select the Wireless tab, check the box “Allow this network to be extended” and set the Radio Mode to "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)”.
Using the Airport Utility, click on the Airport Express; after you define the device and network name, select the Wireless tab, define the Wireless Mode as “Extend a Wireless Network” and check the box “Allow wireless clients”.
    Hope that helps.

  • How can I get extra [SATA] storage space, the cheapest way?

    Hello everybody,
I've an Asus M2N68-AM Plus Motherboard in a HTPC with all SATA connectors occupied. What can you guys come up with as the cheapest way to add more extra storage space [via SATA]?
    1. Change Mobo?
    2. Switch HD's?
    3. Any controller board?
    4. Other?
Note: The main idea is to maintain the existing HD's, cause I don't want to keep them unused or to loose money by selling.
    Regards.

Does that mobo have an eSata connector on the back panel?
If yes, buy a regular Sata drive and an enclosure (with a fan!) that has eSata as well as, or instead of USB... and just connect it that way
Or buy a ready made eSata drive/enclosure

  • Cheapest way to get patches

I am about to leave my employment, but I want to still be able to get patches for Oracle 11g on Linux at home.
I don't want to pay too much for it, though!
Am I correct to think that a single-year, 1 Named User Plus purchase of Oracle Personal Edition is the cheapest way to continue to get patches for Oracle-on-Linux, pretty much as I would in a commercial environment?
Secondary question: the Oracle Store lists that personal edition at (for example) $100 per Named User Plus but then adds on another $120 for "Cost of first year support". Am I right to think that next year I would only be charged $120 (or whatever it may have increased to by then)? In other words, if I pay $220 today, next year, I'll only have to pay the support component?

  • I have a new 64g 4g iPad. I want to get music off my old MacBook running  osx 10.4.11, what is cheapest way to do it (I have iTunes acc set up on both), is the only way to buy a new version?

running  osx 10.4.11, what is cheapest way to do it (I have iTunes acc set up on both), is the only way to buy a new version?

If music etc was purchased from itunes store then go to the itunes app on ipad and check purchased to see what you can redownload for free.
Assume you can't sync the iPad as you are on Tiger with old iTunes version.

  • I dropped my ipod in the pool and put it in rice for three days and now the screen stays white. what is the cheapest way to fix my ipod?

i dropped my ipod in the pool and put it in rice for three days and the screen just stays white now. what is the cheapest way to fix thiss?

There are companies that specialize in data retrieval but it's costly (probably cheaper to buy a new iPod) and more than likely as Allan said, your circuits are probably damaged beyond all hope of retrieving anything. It's worth calling Apple you maybe able to get a discount or a refurbished iPod. Can't hurt to ask, Good luck. (And in the future... no texting in the john.) Sorry, couldn't resist it.

  • Best cheapest way to run powerpc apps on lion 10.8

Hi i am running 10.8 i bided on a software that i would like to use upgrade is not option
what is the cheapest way to run it
    any ideas thanks

If your Mac can boot to Snow Leopard, 10.6.x, then you can create a separate partition to run SL on. It would require restarting to use that software, then back to Lion when you're done.
If your Mac came with Lion, then you'd have to purchase virtual machine software such as Parallels, or VMware. There's also the free VirtualBox. Then purchase Snow Leopard Server directly from Apple (only the server version is allowed to install into a VM). Once that's done, you can install the PPC software in the VM running SL and have both it and Lion up at the same time. You'd be best to have at least 8 GB of RAM in your Mac.

What is the cheapest way to get it fixed or can i fix it myself without any money? I also didnt have the chance to back up my data because it went black screen out of now where.

If your phone is not covered by the warranty anymore, Apple will replace it for a new device, same model and size, if you are willing to pay the service fee.
If you decide to get a 3rd party company to do the repair, Apple will not service your phone anymore after that.
    Out-of-warranty repair service
If your repair isn’t covered by Apple’s One Year Limited Warranty, AppleCare+, or AppleCare Protection Plan, your iPhone might be eligible for out-of-warranty service. For example, liquid damage isn’t covered by warranty but might be eligible for out-of-warranty service. Some damage isn’t eligible at all, for example if your device has been broken into multiple pieces. See Apple’s Repair Terms and Conditions for complete details.

  • Need monitor repaired, for cheapest way possible

I have a 22'' LCD Sony SyncMaster monitor that I bought last year for my birthday. (September 9th) It came with a 1 year warranty from Sony. But around December, the monitor began to flicker. If I left the monitor on for about 10-30 minutes (while it was flickering) it would go back to normal status and act as if nothing happened. Around Janruary, however. It would flicker and never stop. And then eventually, it just stopped flicking/working/anything at all. I was thinking about taking it into Best Buy and sending it in to be repaired, but I'm scared of how much it will actually cost me. I did not purchase a warranty, but there is still the manufacturer warranty. I want to repair my monitor in the cheapest way possible. Got any advice?

If you purchased the product from Best Buy and still have the reciept , the geek squad should be able to take care of things for you under the manufacturers warranty providing its still a valid warranty.
If not, you will need to call Sony directly and talk to their tech support guys and discuss the options with them.

I have a iPhone 4S with a cracked screen and I believe it needs a SIM card. My question is what would be the cheapest way to repair it completely?

I would replace it out of warantee for the 200. but if you really need to save a few bucks
iphone repair store (craked glass) - $150
new sim card (if charged for one) - $20
but getting another one for 200 (through insurance) will give you a year warantee
    no insurance, no $200 option

  • Cheapest way to buy final cut studio 2

Hi there, I live in Australia and want to work out the cheapest way to legitimately and legally buy the full version of final cut studio 2 and think I have worked it out, but wanted to sanity check with others. My idea is to buy a new copy from ebay of an old version of final cut pro eg FCP 2, 3, 4 or 5 for a few $$ (have seen some for around $50) and then go to apple to buy an upgrade to final cut studio 2 rather than the full version ($899 vs $1,698AUD). My question is does this make sense. or should I just bite the bullet and buy the full version straight up? If any one can advise me of any hidden pitfalls of my plan it would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

It can go either way. My eBay software purchases have worked out great. For example, I bought the upgrade from FCE to FCP on eBay and then used that to upgrade to FCS2. Everything was totally on the up-and-up. But too, I was completely prepared for every penny of that purchase to go down the toilet, if that's how it ended. I got lucky, it was just fine. So it's your call.
But if you get burned and have no recourse then whatever money got wasted there could've been spent going down a route that you can trust to be 100% legit. It all depends on your personal threshold for the potentially painful, wasteful consequences. It's a craps shoot. Feelin' lucky?
