Check out my review of Arch linux (from ex debian user)

let me know what you think.
http://www.antonywilliams.com/2008/07/l … linux.html
I tried to get it added to list in distrowatch and linuxtoday (emailed both, but nothing )
nevermind, noticed someone else already linked to this.
just wish i could delete this topic!

  • Questions from a debian user

    Hi All,
    I'd like to give Arch a try on an older laptop.  Just some basic questions from a debian user:
    1)  I'd like to use xfce.  I had trouble finding exactly what to download.  Is there a boot-only.iso?  I'd like to install the minimum and pull the rest off of the Web.
    2)  I'm using the debian  testing release and enjoy its balance between stability and newer software.  It also keeps me sharp and climbing up the learning curve.  Should I try Arch's testing  release?
    3)  That's about it.  I'll learn the rest once I have it up and running.
    Thanks Much,
    ab

    That should answer all your questions and get you started.

  • Newbie consulting about migration to Arch Linux from Ubuntu

    I am using Ubuntu until I find Arch Linux, and I feel I quite agree with its principle of simplicity. I am considering a migration to Arch Linux.
    The two major aspects I am thinking over are NTFS support and Chinese support.
    As for NTFS, I need a system which has the capability to both read and write NTFS partitions, and stability is quite important for me. I cannot afford any data loss! With Ubuntu, I have never suffered a data loss from NTFS partitions.
    As for Chinese, I do not care about the UI language. Usually I use US English. But I need the system to display Chinese and allow me to input Chinese.
    Does Arch Linux meet my requirements? Or is it possible to configure it to have those capabilities?
    Thank you! And sorry for my poor English.

    Runiq wrote:
    ntfs-3g takes care of NTFS support. It's quite stable here, and I reckon Ubuntu uses it as well.
    From my experiences with writing Japanese, I'd say that Arch is definitely able display Chinese as well. Writing chinese Characters shouldn't be that difficult either, given the fact that all Linux packages are basically the same. It's also possible to display and write Chinese characters in a console.
    As for stability, I never had any problems, though it's in rare cases necessary to refer to the homepage before updating system-critical packages. I'd also update at least once a week if I were you.
    Thank you!
    The stability I stated mainly refers to the stability of ntfs-3g.

  • Installing Arch Linux from Arch Linux .

    Is there a form to  install the base system from Arch Linux? I have Arch Linux I686 and a partition with free space. Maybe in a virtual box and then copying to the partition?

    i put X84_64 in /etc/pacman.conf and pacstrap dowload the correct x86_64 files BUT. When the programs are installing pacman calls execv and there is a arch imcopatibility see:

  • Arch linux lxc in debian host.

    Hi. I have been playing with lxc recently. Im running them on a debian host. I have created a couple of debian lxc and a centos lxc inside the host. Now im trying to create an arch lxc. There is an arch linux template provided by the debian package but it requires pacman installed on the host system in order to work. This is a production server and i dont want to install binaries untracked, so compiling pacman with make, is not an option.
    I decided to create an Arch linux chroot as the wiki says by dowloading a tarball.
    Im able to chroot sucessfully to it and install some packages. I have created the lxc dev/  files by following the arch wiki, and reading the archlinux template. Then i created a config file for the linux container and a fstab file. I got these from the archlinux template and copying other lxc config and fstab files (debian and centos one).
    However hen i try to boot the container with lxc-start i got
    lxc-start: File exists - failed to symlink '/dev/pts/ptmx'->'/dev/ptmx'
    lxc-start: failed to setup the new pts instance
    lxc-start: failed to setup the container
    lxc-start: invalid sequence number 1. expected 2
    lxc-start: failed to spawn 'arch'
    So i remove /dev/ptmx  into the lxc.
    Then i got:
    lxc-start: No such file or directory - failed to exec /sbin/init
    lxc-start: invalid sequence number 1. expected 2
    lxc-start: failed to spawn 'arch
    And here im trapped, i cant find /sbin/init, it doesn't exist, in a normal arch installation /sbin/init is pointing to /lib/systemd/systemd .
    What to do now?? Is it impossible to setup a lxc with arch inside  a systemv hosts system?????
    here is my config file:
    xc.utsname=arch
    lxc.tty=4
    lxc.pts=1024
    lxc.rootfs=/srv/lib/lxc/arch/rootfs
    lxc.mount=/srv/lib/lxc/arch/fstab
    #networking
    #lxc.network.type=${lxc_network_type}
    #lxc.network.flags=up
    #lxc.network.link=${lxc_network_link}
    #lxc.network.name=eth0
    #lxc.network.mtu=1500
    #cgroups
    lxc.cgroup.devices.deny = a
    # /dev/null and zero
    # /dev/null and zero
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 1:3 rwm
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 1:5 rwm
    # consoles
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 5:1 rwm
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 5:0 rwm
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 4:0 rwm
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 4:1 rwm
    # /dev/{,u}random
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 1:9 rwm
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 1:8 rwm
    # /dev/pts
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 136:* rwm
    # rtc
    lxc.cgroup.devices.allow = c 254:0 rwm
    and fstab
    proc proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0
    sysfs sys sysfs defaults 0 0

    I'm not sure if you've tried Docker yet, but it took about 3 minutes to have a working Arch Docker container on my Ubuntu 12.04 server:
    # docker pull base/arch
    # docker run -i -t base/arch /bin/bash

  • [SOLVED] Trying to install Arch Linux from harddisk using /dev/sda2

    Hi
    I'm trying to install Arch using my swap partition, following this wiki entry: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ha … stallation
    What I've done:
    Downloaded ISO: archlinux-2010.05-netinstall-i686.iso
    Command: swapoff /dev/sda2
    Command: fdisk /dev/sda and changed the system type to 83 (Linux) on /dev/sda2
    Now it looks like:
    Command (m for help): p
    Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders, total 488397168 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x00017e5b
    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 1 1060289 530144+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sda2 1060290 3164804 1052257+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sda3 3164805 105579179 51207187+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sda4 105579180 488392064 191406442+ 83 Linux
    It complained about device was busy, but it still seemed to have changed the system type, so I did partprobe as it wrote.
    WARNING: Re-reading the partition table failed with error 16: Device or resource busy.
    The kernel still uses the old table. The new table will be used at
    the next reboot or after you run partprobe(8) or kpartx(8)
    Syncing disks.
    [root@swamp ~]# partprobe
    <no output>
    Next I did:
    [root@swamp ~]# dd if=archlinux-2010.05-netinstall-i686.iso of=/dev/sda2
    327680+0 records in
    327680+0 records out
    167772160 bytes (168 MB) copied, 4.3025 s, 39.0 MB/s
    [root@swamp ~]# mkdir /mnt/sda2
    [root@swamp ~]# mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2
    mount: warning: /mnt/sda2 seems to be mounted read-only.
    [root@swamp ~]# ls -al /mnt/sda2
    total 150466
    dr-xr-xr-x 3 root root 240 May 16 15:54 .
    drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Nov 5 01:40 ..
    dr-xr-xr-x 3 root root 556 May 16 15:52 boot
    -r--r--r-- 1 root root 448 May 16 15:54 isomounts
    -r--r--r-- 1 root root 8192 May 16 15:54 overlay.sqfs
    -r--r--r-- 1 root root 154058752 May 16 15:54 root-image.sqfs
    And unmounted it again.
    The wiki page says to type: fsck -f /dev/sda2fsck, but I get no such file while trying to open sda2fsck.
    [root@swamp ~]# fsck -f /dev/sda2fsck
    fsck from util-linux-ng 2.18
    e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
    fsck.ext2: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda2fsck
    The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
    filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
    filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
    is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
    Can I ignore the above and continue modifying grub?
    Thanks :-)

    fsck -f /dev/sda2fsck makes no sense because /dev/sda2fsck is not a deivce. If the wiki says that, then it is wrong. It's only doing a fsck anyway so probably not really needed. If you are just formatting th swap partition then use, mkfs.ext{234}.
    edit:
    from the wiki
    # fsck -f /dev/sda2fsck 1.40.8 (13-Mar-2008)
    e2fsck 1.40.8 (13-Mar-2008)
    Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
    Pass 2: Checking directory structure
    Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity
    Pass 3A: Optimizing directories
    Pass 4: Checking reference counts
    Pass 5: Checking group summary information
    /dev/sda2: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
    /dev/sda2: 243/78936 files (8.2% non-contiguous), 310519/314880 blocks
    The first like should just be
    # fsck -f /dev/sda2

  • My Arch Linux review

    Hi,
    If someone is interested in reading a review of Arch Linux, you can find one written by me here: http://nirski.pl/2010/02/arch-linux-keeps-it-simple/ . Please feel free to comment, criticism is welcome as it is my first review of an operating system. I am currently testing a free hosting so tell me if it works for you.
    tarantoga

    It's a nice article, but I want to comment on one quote you made, so there is no discouragement among new users.
    tarantoga wrote:A small flaw – the repositories could be richer, package quantity is not as impressive as (for example) in Debian.
    This is not a flaw. It's actually an advantage to the way Arch works. Probably 1/3 or more of packages you see in Debian are split packages such as the "*-devel" packages, which can be among the same variety of packages you would already have installed without them. In Arch, everything comes inside the package to simplify the installation/removal of packages with a more clear overhead on what's in the system. Rarely there is a need to split any, but they would all come as a dependency if needed. Every package you would ever want is in the repositories. If there is a package you cannot find, you are not limited as you already know. 99.8% of the time, they can be found in the AUR already setup with pre-made pkgbuilds and install scripts maintained by users, that can be downloaded and installed with an AUR helper (such as yaourt, packer, bauerbill, slurpy, etc.) or done manually with makepkg. If an upsupported package gains enough popular votes, it can move to the community repo maitained by a TU to make sure you get update the latest package updates possible without having to intervene with the AUR or the pkgbuilds. At the same time this would allow the Arch developers to focus more on the main repos, making sure you get the bleeding edge. When it comes to Arch, quality is always better than quantity.

  • [SOLVED]Multiple Problems after a new install on Arch Linux

    Hello all,
    I just finished installing Arch Linux from the core ISO which I downloaded from the site. The install went smoothly and booted up fine. Also I was able to install gnome and its extras fine as well. On the first boot after installing gnome I managed to get my resolution correct also. However later on after I installed compiz fusion everything with the resolution seems to be going wrong . My computer specs are shown below :
    AMD 64 3200
    Asus M2N MX-SE
    2 GB Ram
    Geforce 8600 GT
    Viewsonic VA1918wm (Native resolution is 1440x900)
    At the moment I can only manage to get upto 1024x768 and it looks quite bad at that resolution. I have attached the xorg.conf I have at the moment.

    While I was trying to fix this I noticed I was encountering other problems also. For one I found that sometimes dhcpcd times out on booting up and I cant seemt o connect to the Internet on booting. Although I just thought of trying a static IP and I'll post if that helped later on.
    Another problem is I found that I seem to get the following error randomly. Pressing ctrl + D after this just restarts the machine.
    Finally, while I boot up I noticed that it says "Mounting root partition as read only   [DONE]"  Is the root partition supposed ot be mounted as read only ? Attached my fstab just in case it is needed.

    As you can see I'm quite new to Arch Linux so any help would be deeply appreciated.

    I copied the xorg.conf file from the third link and just made minor changes to it like removing all the resolutions I didn't need and now its working fine :).
    Now Im just stuck with two problems. One is the following message which appears randomly.
    ******************* FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED *************
    * Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root *
    * filesystem is currently mounted read-only. To remount *
    * it read-write type: mount -n -o remount,rw / *
    * When you exit the mantenance shel the system will *
    * reboot automatically. *
    A thread about the same can be found http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=295384 but there isn't a solution on it.
    The second is the intermittent problems with the Network being setup. Sometimes when I boot up it just says dhcpcd timedout and I won't be able to connect . However I can connect on another machine at the same time.
    Took a look at the drive in question with gparted and it shows the below information:
    /dev/sdb1 ext3   /   32.59 GB    4.92 GB   27.68 GB  boot
    By any chance is any of the above information relevant :x ?

  • How to install Linux from a distro instead of booting a live cd?

    Suppose you have Arch Linux installed in sda and you want to install a new copy in sdc, can you do it from your distro instead of booting with the installation cd?
    Here's my sdc (75 GB):
    /dev/sdc1 ntfs 100 MB
    /dev/sdc2 ntfs 40 GB
    those partitions are used by Windows 7, so there's another 35 GB for Linux.
    Now here's the the problem: this latest Arch Linux install media is kinda complicated because it does not provide the AIF anymore. Also, the installation method differs a little from the old ones. Until 2011.08.19 I would partition the remaining space like this:
    /dev/sdc3 extended 35 GB
    /dev/sdc5 ext2 100 MB /boot
    /dev/sdc6 swap 1 GB swap
    /dev/sdc7 ext4 15 GB /
    /dev/sdc8 ext4 19 GB /home
    However this guide http://ebalaskas.gr/wiki/archlinux/netinstall shows a different (suposedly recommended) partition table for the new method.
    So,
    1) Is it possible to install Arch Linux from an already installed distro, including GRUB2?
    2) Is it possible to use the partiton table style I provided?
    And how to do it of course.
    Thanks!

    Check this article out
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ting_Linux
    Note that it says it is out of date because of pacman.  Really all you need to know is that pacman uses signed packages now, so it is now necessary to run the pacman-key stuff.  Or set SigLevel = Never in pacman.conf
    Edit: IMHO the first method is preferred because it more closely resembles a regular install.  Ergo, you will be able to semi follow the beginners guide for config and such.

  • Arch Linux Programming Language Logos

    *update*
    I've created a page for the logos on my site: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … age_logos/
    *edit*
    This started out with just the Arch Linux Haskell logo (I really liked the new Haskell logo when I saw it and felt inspired). After encouragement from others I've made some more logos. If you request something, please suggest the appropriate logo for the language (and maybe link to it... preferably to an svg file).
    Haskell
    The cutout and grey colors are based on the new Thompson-Wheeler logo.
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … l_logo.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_2.svg
    These colors are from the haskell.org site logo.
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_3.svg
    Python
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … n_logo.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_2.svg
    Java
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … a_logo.svg
    Ruby
    Son of a dirty bitch was this more complicated then I'd expected. When I found the Ruby logo svg I was thinking "nice, this should be straightforward" until I opened it in Inkscape. The vector image was so dirty I ended up recreating the gem shape manually using the old one as a guide. I don't mind though... it showed me how to do point and path snapping and some other things.
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_2.svg
    with thinner lines:
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … y_logo.svg
    Shell
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_3.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_4.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_7.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_8.svg
    other versions:
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … l_logo.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_2.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_5.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_6.svg
    Tcl
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … l_logo.svg
    C and C++
    I'm not really happy with either of these... plain letters lack symbology and the colors are arbitrary. Anyway, I modelled the C on the impact font (but didn't actually use Impact as it's still a commercial font). The color for the C logo comes from the color used on the cover of the K&R book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kr_c_prog_lang.jpg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … C_logo.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … P_logo.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … p_logo.svg
    Perl
    This one was a bit complex too but it taught me how to take a very small image with dirty edges and convert it into a smooth vector image using GIMP and Inkscape.
    The color is from The Perl Foundation's onion logo.
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … l_logo.svg
    TeX & LaTeX
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … x_logo.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … x_logo.svg

    Fortran
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … n_logo.svg
    Scala
    This one uses semi-transparency so silhouette/threshold versions (e.g. all black) may not look good.
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … a_logo.svg
    Lisp
    This is another one that I'm not sure about. I created the parentheses and lambda myself because I wasn't happy with any of the (free) fonts. Suggestions for improvement are welcome.
    *edit*
    I've changed the () following andre.ramaciotti's suggestion. I've also changed the colors.
    The colors and alien are based on Conrad Barski's Lisp logo.
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_2.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_4.svg
    Other versions:
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … p_logo.svg (original (λ) that I created)
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_3.svg ((λ) using bitstream vera)

    PostgreSQL
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … l_logo.svg
    Programming-related:
    Vim
    This one took a while because I had to trace the Vim logo by hand first and then I had to manually adjust several paths to get the right outlines. I think the effort was worth it though.
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … m_logo.svg
    Emacs
    Here's another one that uses semi-transparency (for the "shadows").
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … s_logo.svg
    Git
    These use semi-transparency too.

    I've added a Tcl logo. I used the svg image from Wikipedia because it was the neatest way to do it. I used the colors from the second logo.
    MOD MESSAGE
    Please move this to the artwork forum. I'm so used to posting threads in this forum that I didn't check if it was the best place for it.

  • Incorporating both Arch Linux and a package repository onto one DVD.

    Dear Arch Linux community,
    I would like to tell you a little background information about myself before I start to talk about my actual subject. I know that this part of my message does not belong here, but it is my own ritual to do it like this in my first message in every community. I hope I can make friends with people here and try not to harm this community in any way. Thank you for reading this.
    I am a 16-year-old male student from Finland and addicted to GNU/Linux and freeware / open source software. My previous experience with GNU/Linux is fairly large; from thin client Debian GNU/Linux administrator to kernel hacker and software developer. My delight is music, particularly writing and composing my own music tracks which vary from classic chiptunes to acid trance and dance beats. Arch Linux seems to be a great GNU/Linux operating system for me, because I am looking for a GNU/Linux distribution that does not focus on desktop, but rather on simplicity and lightweight solutions. I also do not fear "bleeding edge" software which is a positive point for Arch Linux compared to Debian GNU/Linux. As you can probably notice I have been using Debian GNU/Linux before I considered Arch Linux. However now I am here hoping for a totally new experience from Arch Linux.
    Enough with my foreword, I would like to now go back to the actual subject. Usually I use DVD media for GNU/Linux images to have both the installer for the GNU/Linux distribution and the main package repository to make installations faster and to have the possibility for an offline installation. As I see, Arch Linux provides only CD images which are approximately 160MB in size, making me to think about incorporating Arch Linux's "Core" and "Extra" package repositories to fill up the remaining 4GB on the DVD. If the "Core" package repository is already included in the Arch Linux CD image, please forgive my lack of information as this is the first time I have ever entered to the world of Arch Linux.
    My question is as follows: Is it possible to incorporate Arch Linux and a package repository onto one DVD while retaining the ability to install Arch Linux from that DVD? If positive, how should I go on to do it?
    Thank you in advance!

    No niin, tervetuloa arch-mailmaan.
    Ok, I better stop at one sentence before someone gets mad at me :roll:.
    To answer your question, yes. It is quite possible to put something like that together, heck I think someone suggested we should distribute those some time, but we decided not to (don't quote me, I'm too lazy to read the archives right now) since in most cases pacman will get the job done will job done with less bandwidth waste, and distributing huge snapshots isn't really too conducive to the whole rolling-release thing.
    You might want to check out archiso [1], the install scripts [2], and one of my sample archiso configurations [3] that effectively creates an install CD. Now, keep in mind that archiso isn't the *current* way installers are created, but I think it's much more straightforward to work with than what we're using right now. That said, we currently use archboot to create the CDs, so that may be worth taking a look at as well. There is also a really old installer remastering wiki article [4], though not terribly relevant, you could still use a similar technique to pull apart one of our recent install iso's and remaster it with whatever packages you want. Anyhow, if you'd like help with this, I'd be more than happy to give you a hand (I need some more test-cases for archiso...), or if you look at it and go "gee, this is dumb", don't be afraid to send patches. Just get in touch with me through email, jabber, irc, or whatever.
    Good luck

  • Cannot connect properly to Oracle on Linux from Windows

    Good day all,
    I’ve got 2 virtual machines running on my Mac:
    -     Centos 5.4 with Oracle 11gR2
    -     Windows 2003 server with Oracle 10gR2
    From Linux box I have access to Oracle database on Windows box (both directly and via a database link), however from Windows I have problems accessing the oracle database on the Linux box.
    From Windows, if I try to set up a connection using Oracle’s SQL Developer using connection type “Basic”, I get “IO Error: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection”. When I use “TNS”, then it works.
    From the linux box it all works fine as the “oracle” user, but when I log on as another user (in this case “informatica”) it doesn’t work properly any more.
    To sketch what both environments look like.
    Windows:
    -     Machine name WS2003Ora10g
    -     Etc/hosts

    Checking out the port situation on Linux:
    [informatica@ilmserver ~]$ netstat -an | grep 1521

    [ the sequence of dots means I took out a whole lot or lines with virtually the same information, only different port(s) ]
    What’s noticeable is that port 1521 seems solely assigned to the localhost IP-address, 127.0.0.1.
    Another thing I noticed is that from a different user in Linux, so not “oracle”, using SQL Developer I cannot access the local Oracle database via TNS. When choosing TNS the dropdown box for “Network Alias” – which normally is populated with entries from TNSNAMES.ORA – is completely empty. On a “users and groups” level I basically assigned all the groups the oracle user is member of, to the other user (called informatica).
    And to make it even more interesting, at first it worked using “Basic” (in SQL Developer), but since implementing the TNS_ADMIN environment variable, it doesn’t work at all !!!
    Trying it via SQLPLUS as the “informatica” doesn’t work either:
    [informatica@ilmserver ~]$ sqlplus system
    bash: sqlplus: command not found
    I’ve assigned the “dba” group to “informatica”, or rather, I have assigned all groups to the “informatica” user as the “oracle” user has.
    Needless to say I am no Linux expert, rather a quite inexperienced Linux-user.
    So bottom line, the situation I’d like to be able to create is the following:
    •     Linux Oracle DB accessible from “informatica” (or any other) user on Linux, via both TNS and java-based
    •     Linux Oracle DB accessible from remote machine (running Windows 2003 server) via both TNS and java-based
    •     And for Informatica to work properly, it says it needs the TNS_ADMIN environment variable, so the “informatica” user must have full Oracle connectivity with TNS_ADMIN in place.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Patrick

    Hi Billy,
    Thanks for your elaborate answer.
    Not sure whether I can use it though, since the application using the oracle database (i.e. Informatica ILM 5.3.2) appears to have a specific need for TNS.
    I thought I had a solution (not the prettiest for sure) by just copying TNSNAMES.ORA to an accessible location, change ownership to "informatica" user, have TNS_ADMIN point to it, and Bob should be my uncle. Well... he isn't!
    In SQL Developer when I choose TNS as connection type, the drop down box is STILL empty.....aaaaahhhh!!!!!
    I was advised to play around with primary groups, so I tried oinstall and dba as primary groups for informatica user, all to no avail.
    And I can't even test it with SQLPLUS because I don't have access to it as "informatica".
    Who knows what the exact reason for that is... I know I'm a far cry from an experienced linux user, but I assumed that having the Oracle Home bin directory in PATH, and assigning the oinstall group to informatica user, would ensure access to to any executable in there. Well... NOT!!!
    +[informatica@ilmserver ~]$ sqlplus system@orcl+
    bash: sqlplus: command not found
    This is driving me nuts. Thought that finding a solution for this wouldn't be this hard, but essentially I've been digging for 3 days now.
