Check this first for Mac-ABS-PC setup

Anyone with wireless network setup problems.... one thing to check first, before configuring a Windows PC to connect to an Airport network. This is how it works for Snow ABS and OSX 10.3.8. I don't know if it's the same for Tiger.
Start with the Mac side.
Make sure your Airport network is on and working. Open the Airport Admin Utility, click Configure. Click Show all settings. Open the Access Control tab. Check to see if you have restricted access to specific Macs on your network.
If you have restricted access to specific machines, your Windows PC will not be able to connect to the network when you try and set up the connection from the PC side. It is easy to forget this little detail, especially if you set up your ABS network a while ago.
In Access Control, delete all networked machines listed (click-select a machine in the list and click the - button to the right of the list). Click the Update button at bottom of window, wait till A Admin Utility updates.
Next, click the Password padlock icon in the Admin Utility menu bar. Copy down the 13 digit hex key that is displayed.
Now you can switch to the PC, and follow instructions such as iFelix provides to get the PC to find and connect to the network.
Once the PC has connected successfully, open the (your network) Connection Status window, click on Support tab, and the Details button. You will see the physical address of the PC listed. Note it down.
As iFelix says, you can use this physical address in the Aiport Admin Utility. Go back to a networked Mac, open Aiport Admin > Configure > Show all settings > Access Control. Using the + button, add your Macs back into the list, and add the PC using the physical address you noted down. Click the Update button. Your network will restrict access to the listed machines.
I didn't have to disable either Mac or Windows firewalls during this procedure.
Hope this helps
Ken

Henry, seems to me cracking filters or WEP is a secondary security issue. Most of us just want to get our network to work, after which we may have the luxury of considering security issues.
On the ABS Access Control setting, I set this when I first got the ABS, and then forgot about it. Yes, stupid of me, and maybe it is useless. But, with something new like a network, many of us don't know what we're doing or how it works. We just try to do what seem the right things, cross our fingers and hope for the best.
It doesn't help when experts say things in ways too cryptic to understand.
For example, you say "...simply add the MAC address of the PC to this list right from the start..."
The vital piece of information you leave out is how we can get this MAC address for the PC before the connection to the ABS network is successfully established.
The sad fact is we don't know how to get the MAC address "right from the start". Or even what a MAC address is (as opposed to say a Mac address). I now suspect that the "MAC address" may be the same as the "physical address", but I'm not sure even now, and my network is working.
In my case, a setting in the Mac Airport Admin prevented the Windows PC from getting a successful connection, so Windows didn't reveal the physical address of the PC until I found what the problem was, and connected. Only then was the physical address of the PC revealed to me. At the end, not the start.
If there is some way to extract the physical address of the PC out of it before it gets a successful connection to an ABS, it might be useful if someone would reveal the secret. It's probably quite simple, but nothing I read told me how to do it (in words I could understand). Or even that I needed to.
Perhaps out of all this some of the step-by-step instructions can be added to (and some of the jargon clarified?), so that posts to this forum become fewer, and we'll have less hair-tearing.
Regards
Ken

    set the wake-on lan on the main computer
    The laptop's too far away from the router to be connected by ethernet. It's all wifi.
    No separate server app on the laptop, it's all samba
    The files are on a windows laptop and a hard drive hooked up to the windows laptop. The windows share server is pants, so I'd need some sort of third party server running. Maybe you weren't suggesting to use Samba to connect to the windows share though?
    I'm glad that you've all understood my ramblings and taken and interest, thanks The way I see it, I can't be the only netbook user these days looking for this kind of convenience, and I certainly won't be once chrome and moblin hit the market.

    I am getting pop ups on safari and firefox lately and am worried I may have malware or something now on my computer doing this. What is the best way to check this out for sure and remove it?

    Please review the options below to determine which method is best to remove the Adware installed on your computer.
    The Easy, safe, effective method:

    If you are comfortable doing manual file removals use the somewhat more difficult method:

  • Does something like this exist for mac somewhere?

    http://www.bitboost.com/pawsense/
    I've recently gotten a cat that loves my desk and keyboard. I've had to resort to unplugging my keyboard whenever i'm not by it. While it isn't a big deal, i'd prefer it if i didn't have to. Is there something similar for mac?

    yeah, i know that's an option too, but the problem is it doesn't work when i'm watching a movie or something full screen or have just stepped away from my computer for a second.

  • HT5271 was this update for mac using 10.5.8

    i have been using the internet at work to access the web, (no problem)...I use safari 5.0.6 to connect with my aol account to get my mail, (no problem...until maybe about 3 weeks ago, safari will no long get mail from aol.  I  tried to send some files to someone else, and it may have been to large for the aol account.
    Now i can't get mail or send mail form safari, i must go to the website aol, to retrieve any mail.  I've tried setting up a new account using the instructions that aol provided for imap, didn't work.  I am constantly getting drafts that are repeating themselves...and i can't get rid of them by trash, or delete.  i was 29 pages. the message i receive is the following......SOME ACTIONS TAKEN WHILE THE AOL WAS OFFLINE COULD NOT BE COMPLETED ONLINE.  MAIL HAS UNDONE ACTIONS ON SOME MESSAGES SO THAT YOU CAN REDO ACTIONS ONLINE.  MAIL HAS SAVED THE OTHER MESSAGES IN MAILBOX ON MY MAC AND IN MY MAC SO THAT YOU CAN COMPLETE THE ACTIONS ONLINE.     ADDITIONAL IINFO....The connection on the server imap.aol.com on port 993 has timed out............I would like to be able to get rid of the email i was trying to send with the large files......can anyone help me......This is the first time i have been on this site with a question....so for those of you who know more than me, i respectfully say THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

    if I don't find a better solution I'll try your 2nd option but what do you mean by "combo" update?
    My understanding is to simply insert the OS 10.5 installation CD, reinstall the OS and the just keep updating it via the OS SSoftware update panel and stop untill I see the scary Java 8 update. Is that what you meant?
    While you can do it that way, the combo update picks up operating system updates through a collection of releases. When dealing with operating system upgrades, I've found using the combo updates to be more reliable than Software Update, as sometimes Software Update doesn't apply updates correctly, and weird things can happen. Doesn't happen often though, thankfully.
    So the OS X 10.5.5 Combo update contains all updates between 10.5.0 and 10.5. The 10.5.8 combo update contains the updates from 10.5 thru 10.8. Here are the updates:
    10.5 combo update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL692
    10.8 combo update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866
    If you go down the combo path, repair permissions before and after doing each update. Then do Software Update for any other non-OS X updates, and don't apply the Java Update 8.

  • Check Printing Software for Mac

    I just found a new program to print blank check with my mac. I was a pc user for years and I used Checksoft, but I could never find a program that would do this with Mac. Now there is one. It is so easy to use. I just love it.

  • If anyone can check this file for me

    Hi!
    Trying to print this ai file I had created. I can't open it now in CS6, CC or 2014? Says I don't have enough memory. (RAM). It is only 1.6mb. I'm running win 7 x64.
    Here it is on dropbox if anyone can opening it and save it say in a standard PDF or more compatible format?
    AI FILE
    When placing it I get this:
    Thank you
    Max

    I can't open the file.
    1) Tells me not enough memory?
    2) placing it in latest PS or AI I get the screen?
    I'll start from scratch, but if the file is okay, I'd rather use that. So if anyone can check it for me. Thanks

  • Could anyone check this code for errors for me??

    Hi! Could someone please tell me if you see any problems with this code?? a friend wants me to check it for errors, but can't find any. I just wanted to make sure, because there are probably a lot of better scripters than me reading this. Please answer soon!!
    heres the code:
    stop();
    addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, preLoad);
    function  preLoad(e:Event):void{
    var bytestoLoad):Number = loaderInfo.bytesTotal;
    var numberLoaded:Number = loaderInfo.bytesLoaded;
    if (bytestoLoad ==  numberLoaded) {
    removeEventListener)Event.ENTER_FRAME, preLoad)
    gotoAndStop(2);
    }else {
    preLoader.preLoaderFill.scaleX =  numberLoaded/bytestoLoad;
    preLoader.bytePercent.text = Math.floor  (numberLoaded/bytestoLoad*100) + "%";
    Thanks!!
    -Sammy

    I ran it on debug mode and changed it to this? see any problems now? or are they fixed? It looks to me like it took some actions out, I hope that doesn't
    effect it....
    stop();
    addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, preLoad);
    function preLoad(e:Event):void{
    var bytestoLoad):Number = loaderInfo.bytesTotal;
    var numberLoaded:Number = loaderInfo.bytesLoaded;
    if (bytestoLoad == numberLoaded) {
    removeEventListener)Event.ENTER_FRAME, preLoad)
    gotoAndStop(2);
    i'm kinda new to flash ((I started as a lua scripter (on Roblox)) so I'm a little confused about this. Thanks for the help!!

  • URGENT Check this code for me please

    Dear whoeverthisreads, please read and see at the bottom my sourcecode, or whatever I could make of it until (even with help) I failed to see any solution. Please copy, paste and run to see if you can manage to adjust the program to make it work in the way as described. And I think I made it unnecessarily complicated. Whatever you can do for me, I will be very, very grateful.

    Catalogue Manager
    Specification:
    a) Develop an object to represent to encapsulate an item in a catalogue. Each CatalogueItem has three pieces of information: an alphanumeric catalogue code, a name, and a price (in dollars and cents), that excludes sales tax. The object should also be able to report the price, inclusive of a 15% sales tax, and the taxed component of the price.
    b) Work out a way to be able to support the inc tax/ex tax price accessors, and the tax component accessor, without needing to store any additional information in the object.
    c) Use an array of 5 CatalogueItem items to store data. (You may assume that no imported goods will be recorded.)
    d) Write a driver program that prompts for three sets of user input (catalogue number, description and price), to be stored in the atalogueItem instance.
    e) The data are to be read for each item in a single line. The data lines will be in the format:
    CatNo:Description:Price
    Use a StringTokenizer object to separate these data lines into their components.
    f) Review the class definition of CatalogueItem, and use modifiers where appropriate to:
     Ensure that data is properly protected;
     Ensure that the accessors and mutators are most visible;
     The accessors and mutators for the catalogue number and description cannot be overridden.
     The constant for the tax rate is publicly accessible, and does not need an instance of the class
    present in order to be accessible.
    As well as a summary, the program should also calculate and display:
     All of the cheapest and most expensive item(s) in the catalogue. In the case of more than one
    item being the cheapest (or most expensive), they should all be listed.
     A total of the pre-tax worth of the goods in the catalogue.
     The average amount of tax on the items in the catalogue.
    A sample execution of the program may be as follows (output should be tabulated):
    Enter five items of data:
    AA123: Telephone: 52.00
    ZJ282: Pine Table: 98.00
    BA023: Headphones: 23.00

  • I have an iPad and would like to replicate my Bookmarks list from Firefox for MAC to my iPad Safari.app; can this be done automatically?

    I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.7, and an iPad 2 running iOS 6.1.3.
    On the MAC, I have Firefox for MAC v 19.0.2 and Safari 6.0.3
    On the iPad, I have only Safari for iPad. I always use Firefox as my browser for the MacBook, but there is no Firefox app for the iPad.
    My Safari bookmarks automatically update from the MacBook to the iPad, but not from Firefox to the iPad. Is it possible for the automatic update to be made from Firefox instead of Safari to the iPad Safari.app? If not, is there an easy way on the MacBook to keep the Safari bookmarks up to date with the Firefox bookmarks, so that the iPad shares my Firefox bookmarks?
    If not possible now, are you planning to make this possible for MAC users who also have an iPad?

  • Myths of required versus not required maintenance for Mac OS X

    Many people come in here claiming to have run maintenance scripts and other addons thinking they are doing a good thing for their computer. Turns out Mac OS X requires very little basic maintenance. Here is a true false listing of maintenance that Mac OS X requires:
    1. Backing up your data. True. Definitely required unless you don't value your data, or wish to spend thousands on data recovery when your hard drive fails, or when you make a mistake about deleting a file that you shouldn't have.
    2. Repairing permissions. Partially false. Most times it isn't required. Occasionally though it has been discovered that after a system is updated with new security or new operating system update, that issues disappear when permissions are repaired via Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.
    3. Repairing the directory. Partially false. Only required if your data is backed up, and access to your files suddenly is limited even after Spotlight indexing is complete. More true if you get a flashing ? disk, though zapping the PRAM sometimes fixes this issue as well.
    4. Deleting cache files. False. Corrupted cache files can create more harm than good, but system maintenance utilities which attempt to delete those files frequently do it when some system applications are running, creating additional corrupted cache files. If you suspect corrupt cache files, often only restoring your backup will fix those issues. If you must try to fix corrupted cache files, backup your data first.
    5. Updating prebinding. Partially false. Some applications may not launch properly if their update doesn't update prebinding in the process. Some Mac OS X system updates do updating prebinding when they are optimizing the system. Other times permissions, cache, preference, or incompatibility issues can cause applications not to launch. Backup your data before attempting.
    6. Keeping your system not overflowing with data. True. Check your capacity of your system hard drive, and how much space is used. If over 85% is used, it has been arbitrarily found that the system may slow down. Deleting unessential files can help. Ask here what those are.
    7. Logfile cleanup. True. Required at least once a month. Some third party utilities will do this manually whenever you choose. It can also be done by the operating system if your system is allowed to run in Screen Saver instead of Energy Saver overnight.
    8. Spyware and virus cleanup. True to an extent. While there are no viruses in the wild as of the writing of this article for Mac OS X applications, if you share data with Windows users, you wouldn't want to become the Typhoid Mary affecting those users. Vigilence in understanding that you shouldn't open attachments from unknown e-mail sources and not falling pray to attempted identity information gathering by e-mail is always wise. If uncertain about a source, contact them first to find out if an e-mail really was sent with an e-mail, snail mail, or phone call sent to their known address, and not an e-mail replying to the message you received! The latter may be spoofed.
    Mac OS X security updates will keep you even safer, though sometimes a system update is required to get them. Basic good security practices though are always recommended, even if you can't apply those updates, in event your application that you can afford isn't yet updated for the new system.

    It is not strictly true that there are no viruses for Mac OS X applications. MS Office applications are Mac OS X applications, as are OpenOffice etc., and my understanding is that Word documents etc. can introduce macro viruses. Even though these may not be able to do the harm they would do on a PC, I believe they can do things such as infecting other documents, templates etc.
    Given the number of users who are now also running Windows on their Macs via BootCamp or what have you, should a note about vulnerability to Windows viruses in such cases be added? It sounds otherwise as though only non-Mac Windows users are vulnerable.

  • Cisco Jabber for Mac, possible without a Presence Server?

    Hi all,
    is it possible to use the cisco jabber client for Mac without a presence server in the uc environment? A customer is looking for Voip Client/Softphone for their Apple Macs. Instant Messaging is no requirement.
    Regards
    Steffen

    WIlliam,
    I belive he could use a Webex Connect account, IPSec VPN, and a CSF device in CUCM to achieve what he is looking for. Though it is a shame that he would need to have Webex Connect to do this just to be able to login to Jabber...
    FYI:
    I just tried out the CUP integration with Jabber for Mac with my customer with CUCM 8.6.2(a), CUCXN 8.6.2(a), and CUP 8.6.1 HA. It seemed to work ok (I was using VPN as well). For some reason the directory service said it failed yet I could search for people in the directory and it worked fine (strange...). I think this may be because the XCP Directory Service on both CUP servers will not start (not sure why because I do not seem to need it).
    My only complaint is that I originally had Jabber for Mac installed for Webex Connect integration. There appeared to me, that there was no way to re-run that original wizard (I looked all around in the package contents...) and select Cisco Presence instead of Webex Connect. To get around this I used AppCleaner to remove Jabber, re-download from Cisco, and re-install, this time selecting the Presence option. Once I tested I had to rinse-repeat to get my Webex Connect back because that is what we use internally. Hopefully they fix this because it makes it hard for us engineers to test Presence integration during installs.
    Opinion on Jabber with Webex Connect:
    I love it for creating Instant Meetings - It sends an email instantly to me that I can forward to attendee's right away (most of time not with contacts otherwise I would do it that way).
    I love the new iPhone app that was just released as well. Very cool. (Do not like how you cannot be logged into both though, not a big deal, Archives of chats are my biggest concern). It is a pretty seemless login/logout from iPhone to Mac and Mac to iPhone though, which I appreciate.
    I have no desire for Phone Services or Voicemail integration so it is annoying that it always says at the bottom of the buddy list "Server or port unreachable". I assume that you need to be connected to VPN in order to have connection to CUCM to use the CSF device... Jabber 8.6 Release Notes says that Jabber is not supported with NAT without VPN
    Also the Chat History is weak on Mac, and none existent on iPhone . Would be cool if history was built in like CUPC or Lync, doesn't require going to Finder to view, and messages would archive on server.
    Plus we use Exchange UM for our Voicemail so not sure how that would integrate with Webex Connect. I believe Exchange Voicemail in Jabber would work with Presence integration though (which is puzzling but I guess it is because you can do all of those XCP external integrations in CUP. However, don't get me started with CUP/Exchange calendar integration and CUP not supporting SAN certificates with multiple hostnames on Exchange...
    Thanks for the info on X-Lite and Bria, I may try out these options. I have been using CIPC through VMWare Fusion and it worked quite well. I believe I needed to install Virtual Audio Cable for the sound to work correctly. I use it through Fusion's "Unity" function and it looks like it is native!
    Just my 2 cents. Let me know what you think.

  • Hotel management software for mac - need assistance PLEASE read..

    hello everyone! thanks for taking the time to read this. I am managing hotels and they requested going via computer compared to hands-on. what programs do you recommend for the hotel management software when one does a reservation online to send a notice and when guests check-in?
    also, does anyone recommend a good GDS type program to have customers do online reservations via my website and to help advertise it? thank you again!
    p.s. this is for MAC only - not PC. thank you..

    For any online activity, personally I would have a customized application written in something like PHP (for scalability instead of being fixed and needed eventual upgrades as in ASP or dotNet).
    Perhaps you can search at cnet for a review. I do not know of any specific software for hotel/rest management for Mac, but I'm sure there are commercial programs of some sort that could be repurposed.
