Check Time Machine Backup Contents

I have been manually backing up my MacBook Pro contents via drag and drop to my NAS box and have now switched to wireless Time Machine backups after an initial wired backup.
I would now like to remove my previous manual backups from the NAS so that I am not doubling up on the content that has been backed up.
My question is:
Is there a way to check the contents of the Time Machine backup on my NAS, so that I can ensure everything has been backed up and if my NAS fails then I won't lose everything?
I am currently running:
2012 MacBook Pro with fully updated Mavericks
Buffalo Linkstation LS421DE with fully updated firmware (RAID1)
Nothing has been specifically excluded from the backup by myself.
I have entered Time Machine from the MacBook and it appears that there are previous copies of all the folders that I have checked so far.
I am sure that you can appreciate how important data is.
I will then be looking at an off site backup in the form of an external hard drive that will be kept at my workplace.
Please let me know if you need any more details or if you have any recommendations regarding my set up.

Sorry to say, but from what I've read here, countless numbers of times, is that Time Machine and a NAS NEVER play well together, no matter what a NAS supplier may say.
The backups are not usually the problem - the problems seem to occur with restores. I'm hoping that those with some real-world experiences will jump in here - you may want to include the fact that you're using a NAS in your subject line.
The best way to create wireless Time Machine backups (that will actually restore, if needed) is to purchase the newest Airport Extreme and hang drives to it. Only the newest one will work.
It's fine to use a drag and drop method of backup to your NAS, but don't count on using Time Machine with it. It simply is not reliable or recommended, as I've read so many times.
As I said, you may want to compose a new header for your message - you're sure to get responses from folks who have used a NAS with varying results. But PLEASE don't just take my word on it - reach out to those who have used a NAS and Time Machine. You may find that there's better software to use with your NAS: my information is strictly second-hand.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • "Checking Time Machine backup..." ?

    Hi,
I just bought a new MacBook and chose to use Time Machine during the initial setup process to transfer information from my TM backup volume (on a Time Capsule) to my new computer.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get past a status window that says ""Checking Time Machine backup...".
It's been saying this for about a half hour now, with the cursor transformed into the dreaded spinning beach ball that's preventing me from quitting the process. It seems stuck, but perhaps it's really doing something.
Anyone else encounter this situation, have an idea for checking to make it's actually doing something, or an idea to just speed things along?
If not, would I ruin the setup process by doing a hold-down-the-power-key force restart? Once rebooted, will I be taken back to the setup video/intro screens that I've not gotten to complete, or will it bypass those and send me straight to the Finder without any data transfer or account setup?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    -Brian

    browe83,
I wonder if you are experiencing what is described here at MacFixIt:
    *Late-2008 MacBooks: Migration Assistant fails*
Users who have just purchased new MacBooks may run into an issue in which the Migration Assistant fails to properly transfer data.
    Apple Discussions poster fghia writes:
+"I just bought the new aluminum MacBook and I am trying to move my files and settings across from my IMac. I set up the DVD / CD share software on both machines. I tried connecting both via direct Ethernet cable and wireless. Both machines are stuck on 'Preparing Information' for a long time, then i get a "Network Connection Failed" error message on the MacBook."+
Being first-run hardware, the new MacBooks have had some glitches that have been addressed by software updates from Apple. Before running Migration Assistant on the new MacBooks directly out of the box, connect them to the Internet and run Software Update. Apple recently released software updates for the new MacBooks as well as for Migration Assistant. The standalone installers for these updates are available here:
    MacBook Software update
    [http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/macbookmacbookp rosoftwareupdate12.html]
    Migration Assistant update
    [http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/migrationanddvd cdsharingupdate.html]
It is recommended that users apply the Migration Assistant update to all computers, to ensure they are running the same version of the driver and utility software before transferring data from one Mac to another. Doing so has solved the Migration Assistant issues for users.
    Cheers!

  • How Can I Check Time Machine backup has worked?

    Hello all
I am new to Mac and still feeling my way so please be gentle! I am not even sure if this is the right community to be in. My system runs 10.7.2 (is that lion, leaopard or penguin?)
Today I used Time Machine for the first time. Successfully formatted my external harddrive and did the first backup. Then uploaded all my photos from my camera using iphoto and did another backup.
I want to check that the back up was successfull and that my photos are on the external hard drive before I do a second backup on a different hardrive and then delete the pics from my camera. I am not sure how to check this. When I open the external harddrive I can't really understand where the iphoto files would be...
your advice and patience with a rookie would be much appreciated
    Cheers

  • Transfer leopard time machine backup content to Evernote (or any other viewer)

    Hi
We had a Wiki on an old Mac server (OS X Leopard) which has now broken down.
I would like to copy the Wiki content into a new format, namely to Evernote.
We have backups available, which were done with time machine. It's output however is without the old wiki structure and thus not easy to decipher. Currently I have to enter each folder to see which .htmls are behind it. Many of the htmls do not load correctly (e.g. images don't show). Long story short, an easy copy+paste doesn't work ;-)
Is there any way to revert this backup into a more manageable, structured form with or without a leopard or mac server at hand?
    I have a macbook pro 3 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, OS X Yosemite version 10.10.1
This is what the content of a main folder looks like:

  • Checking time machine backups with a new external hard drive

Is there a way to make sure that my backups are complete looking at time machine? All I see is the front page for each backup and dont see how to open it and look at the files that were backed up? I have a new LaCie ext hard drive that Im using and want to make sure it is working properly. Also, do I need to change my sleep settings to allow Time Machine to have adequate time to back up, or does it take care of everything?

Are you going into Time Machine from your desktop? If so, TM will show only the desktop in your backups. Try starting from a Finder window of, say, your home folder, then go into Time Machine. You should be able to select a backup and navigate within it just as you would normally, and see the complete "snapshot" of everything that was there at the time of the backup you selected.
Separately, Click here to download the TimeTracker app. It shows most of the files actually saved by TM for each backup (excluding some hidden/system files, etc.).
I have a new LaCie ext hard drive that Im using and want to make sure it is working properly. Also, do I need to change my sleep settings to allow Time Machine to have adequate time to back up, or does it take care of everything?
TM will do all that for you. If your Mac falls asleep, TM will just do a backup when it awakens. If you manually put it to sleep (or power off) while it's doing a backup, it will just pick-up and continue when it's awake again.

  • How to select correct time machine backup for migration assistant

We have two MacBooks backing up to one Time Capsule using time machine: let's call them H and R.
I have had to reinstall Leopard on Macbook H and am now trying to restore using Migration Assistant.
Migration Assistant finds the Time Capsule and identifies that there are two Time Machine Backups, but doesn't give an option to select the one to use.
Whenever I click 'Continue' it does the 'Checking time machine backup' (for hours), then brings up the data to restore, but every time it comes up with the data and settings from Macbook R.
How can I tell Migration Assistant which Time Machine Backup I want to use?

    Brilliant. That was it.
I used the other MacBook to run Disk Utility on my backup volume and repaired it: #A5 is bang on.
Then, Setup Assistant saw both backups and let me select the one I wanted. It's now transferring my stuff.
    Very relieved and extremely grateful.
Your apple tips should come with every mac and time capsule.

  • Is there any way to create a time machine backup to an external hard drive with content already on it?  I have a hard drive that i have used for pictures but when i try to run a backup it says i need to start from a blank drive. Can i get around it?

It would be much better if you had separate drives for the pictures and Time Machine backups.....but, if you want to use the same drive for both purposes, temporarily move the folder with the pictures to another location for safe storage.
Run the Time Machine backup on the hard drive and verify that everything is working correctly. Time Machine will format the disk for you in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as part of the backup process.
Then move the folder with the pictures back to the hard drive with the Time Machine backups.
When you have tested to make sure that everything is working again, then and only then should you delete the folder with pictures from the temporary storage area.
Again....it would be much better to keep Time Machine backups on a drive just for that purpose, and other data on another drive for that purpose. This is clearly one of those times when the fact that you can do something does not mean to imply that you should do it.

  • Unable to access time machine backup. The folder "Documents" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents.

My MacBook Pro with 750GB storage refuses to startup due to a problem with logic board (unfortunately I'm in Singapore and there is no Apple store here and zero customer support).  I'm trying to access some of the files from the time machine back-up using my MacBook Air with 120GB storage, but I'm unable to open the backup.  I receive an error message "you don't have permission to see its contents". Unable to access time machine backup. The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.
I don't really want to migrate the data from the time machine to the MacBook Air as I simply don't have sufficient storage space on the MacBook Air.  The iPhoto library which I'm trying to access is 200GB, which is more than the size of the MacBookAir.
Is there any way I can view the photos and documents stored on the time machine backup.
    Thank you very much.

When you setup the Mac, you created a Admin user account with say name X
You ran Migration Assistant and it migrated user Y from the Windows machine.
User Y has different permissions than User X.
User X can't normally access User Y's account.
So what you do is log out of User X via the Apple menu and into User Y, this way you have permission to access the files.
If you want to transfer files from User Y to User X account
Transfer files between user accounts on the same machine instructions
Finder > Go menu > Computer
A window appears with your boot drive, double click on it to open
Inside is Users folder, double click to open it
Inside is your User accounts, double click on the one you want to send files too
Double click on the Public folder drop the files into the DropBox folder,
The permissions will change and can be used in the other user account when you log into it and moved to the appropriate folders.
Applications are typically installed and kept in the Applications folder which is a global access folder all users can access to run them from, but not all users can modify unless they are a Admin user.
Windows programs won't run on a Mac, but they can be instaled into a virtual machine program that is running Windows.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post it looks like you're trying to restore a Time Machine backup to a new computer.  To do that simply follow the steps in the article below, in the section "Time Machine or other disk migration."

  • Initial Time Machine backup 60 GB smaller than HD content?

    Hello,
I've just performed an initial backup with TIme Machine on an external HD. The result is that TM's backup's size is 360 GB, but my internal HD that has 420 GB of data...
I had no problems during the backup, no warning messages. I don't understand, so I'm not very confortable pursuing with this backup.
The only explanation could be that I've a lot of duplicates on my iMac (2x big iTunes library with same files...) at the moment: does TM save only one copy of same files that are in different directories of the source HD?
    Thanks :)

You can verify your Time Machine backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo tmutil compare
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • Can I restore my mac from a Time Machine backup once I have used BootCamp to partition and set up Windows (without erasing all of the Windows content)?

A few months ago I partitioned my mac using BootCamp and successfully installed Windows and a few Windows-only programs (games).  I never restored my mac from the Time Machine backup and now I would really like all of my files back on my mac.  I am wondering if I insert the osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup, will that get rid of the partition I made for Windows?  Will the Windows side of my hard drive stay in tact or will everything on that side get erased when I restore the mac side from the Time Machine backup.  It was a HUUUUUUUGE pain to do the BootCamp partition and get everything Windows set up and I would really like to not have to do that all over again.  I just want to make sure that if I insert the mac osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup it will only affect the Mac partition, NOT the Windows partition.

    Hi,
Time Machine does not touch your BootCamp Windows.
It simply said ignores it completely.
Nonetheless, I am curious as to why you wanna restore a Time Machine backup.
Usually during partitioning with the BootCamp Assistant in OSX to make the Windows partition your OSX stays intact.

  • Can I upload a Time Machine backup (Passport) made on my computer to my husband's computer?

I'm afraid that my present Macbook is starting to have problems.  I have an old Time Machine backup that I made on a Passport USB drive last year (using OS 10.6) so I can transfer the contents of my computer to my husband's Macbook (also OS 10.6).  But when I connected the Passport, I got a message saying, "This backup was created on a different computer.  If you reuse this backup it can no longer be used by the original computer."
I'm not sure what the implications of this are.  I'm pretty sure I created the backup on my computer, but it might have been made on my husband's computer.  In any case, I'd like to make a new one on my computer and upload it to my husband's as planned.  Question:
    1.  Is there a way I can check to see which computer the backup was made on?
    2.  If it's an old backup of what's on my computer, is there a way I can update it, rather than go through the long process of creating a new backup?  (The USB drive is 1 TB, so an original backup takes forever!)
    3.  If it's a backup of what's on my husband's computer, can I overwrite it ("Reuse Backup"?) and then upload it to his computer?
Thanks for any information out there!

    1. Hook up the drive to your husband's computer. If you don't get the same error message, then it is likely a backup of his computer. If you don't get an error message when attached to your husband's computer, enter Time Machine and check the admin user name.
    2. Depends on answer to first question. If it is your computer, start a backup.
    3. You can have 2 backups on the same drive. If it is your husband's backup, just start a new one for your computer.

  • Restore can't find the time machine backup

I am trying to restore my system from a time machine backup and the Restore option doesn't recognize my time machine backup. Any ideas on how to force it to see it?
    Some background:
I am running Mountain Lion on a 2008 iMac. About 1 week ago, my internal HD failed. I had the hard drive replaced and then hooked up my external HD time machine back-up to restore my system. I started the computer with the command-R option and selected restore from time machine backup. It recognized the hard drive itself, but when I get to the screen to select the backup, it tells me there are no backups on the selected volume. I have run the repair in Disk Utility and the drive checked out ok. I have since installed Mountain Lion again on the internal drive, but didn't bring any files.
Also, while the main computer was down I connected the external drive to another computer and used the show hidden files steps to find some files on the time machine backup and copied them to the other computer.
I don't know if this relates, but I want to share all of the info: Back when the HD originally failed, the computer froze. When my son restarted the computer, it then asked what language he wanted. Then it began a restore process and asked him to select a volume to restore the system to. This is the bad part- He selected a partitioned drive where I had stored some files that didn't fit on the hard drive. It erased that drive and began restoring the system. Of course he didn't tell me about any of this until about 2 hours later, so we lost the contents on that drive. This partitioned drive is the same drive where my time machine backup resides. One partition is the Time Machine backup and the other was external data.
Any ideas? I know I can manually restore the files, but it would be nice to be able to automatically do it. Also, is there a way to read the excluded list? I found the file that this is on...
    Thanks,

  • Time Machine Backup on External Drive Stops working after one week

    Hello,
I'm having a problem with the Time machine backup on an external LaCie drive. After e few days, it suddenly locks up, not performing any backup unless I force-restart my computer and switch off the drive.
    *My setup*:
    - iMac Alu 24 with MacOS X 10.5.1 and 3Gb RAM
    - LaCie external drive 320 Gb - design by Porsche, connected to the FW 400 port of the iMac --> this is the one used for the bakcups, it is left powered on at any time (never switched off)
    - 2 other LaCie external drives 160 Gb - design by Porsche, connected to the FW 400 port of the iMac --> they are generally switched off
TimeMachine is setup to its default scenario, backing up automatically on the external 320 Gb.
    *Daily usage* :
    - the iMac is set to boot automatically at 6:45
    - I usually switch it off manualy at the end of the day
    - Screen Saver is set to launch after 5 minutes
    - sleep time for computer is set to 1:30 hour
    - display sleep 15 min
    - hard disk are set to sleep whenever possible
First symptom : the computer never goes to sleep
Second symptom : I had the following problem already twice since I installed Leopard, once with the original install and today with the updated 10.5.1 version:
    - automatic backups went fine during the whole day : 7:45 8:45 9:45...
    - then an automatic backup starts but never finishes
