Context, complain:
I had few trouble with my new lenovo R61. But today everything is alright, downgrade to xp ok, driver graphic card ok, partitioning ok. Westerday I was in the same point with Avast anti virus installed, comodo firewall install. I decide to install spybot and check an external hard drive. I allowed the choice of spybot to do something with some "dangerous files". After this point I was not allowed to do nothing in the computor. "your not allowed to shut down the computer". "your not allowed to...contact admin". "your not allowed"....
I forced the restart, press blue, recovered the system and decide to accept the norton help, so I have norton install.
Request1:
I want to check my external I drive with any risk for the system, what can I do, I'm I in risk as I plug in?
Request2:
Second small problem, when I try to enrolled my finger, it ask me for TPM code that I do not have. Is it safe to go in the bios and clear security chip, I see some warning in the doc.

I've resolve both problem yesterday evening,
My computer is now ready to operate and my hard drive looks clean now (that's what says norton and sophos anti-virus). I hope that is true. That's was quiet stressfull to have a virus attack after 1 day. Somebody suggest me that's maybe I don't restart before using Spybot creating a big mess in the registry.... I'll never now.
But now ALL GOOD YEAH

I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. I use an external hard drive for my Lightroom library and I notice that all the images shown on there are DNG. On my MAC hard drive I have images shown as NEF. I desperately need to free up space on my hard drive, can I safely delete these NEFs?

heidie22, dj_paige has a very good point there. I would not through away the NEF files; I would archive them to a external drive.
By the way, I am assuming that converting RAW files to DNG is a decision you have made and not an accident. -
I have just purchased a new my book hard drive and would like to connect it to my time capsule and store my itunes and iphoto contentent there to free up space on my internal hard drive . Can this be done and what is the process?
I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy. -
I am running my first backup on Time Machine using a Seagate external hard drive with a thunderbolt adapter and cable. I have a MacBook Pro 2011. It is backing up 11GB, and is telling me it will take approx two days. Is this normal?

my hard drive crashed on my MacBook Pro crashed and I need to get my CS5 up and running on the new hard drive. I copied what I could onto an external hard drive but when I drag and drop I get directions to uninstall but the uninstall folder I have does says it is an alias that is no longer present. I get error 6. I would like to get my software up and running on the laptop again please
If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc. you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod. I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard. -
When i run Time Machine to back up my computer on to an external hard drive, i have no way of knowing when the back up process has been completed. This is necessary to know because i don't leave my external hard drive connected to the computer. I routinely disconnect it after backing up the hard drive, and then i store the external hard drive in a different location from the computer. So, knowing when the back up process has been completed would be a very helpful thing to have the computer specify.
Just enable Time Machine's menu extra (System Preferences -> Time Machine -> Show Time Machine in menu bar.
This will add a little Time Machine icon to your menubar. When Time Machine is actively backing up your data, the icon will spin as a visual indicator. You can also click the menu icon to see the backup status, including how much data is left to back up. -
Hi! I got Movies on my external hard drive that are AVI kind and won't play on my macbook pro? When I start playing the movie a message pops up and says "a required codec is not available". I tried flip4mac, xvid, divx already and still not playing my video. need some help please!! thanks.
Although vlc mentioned above is a much more powerful and better player you could try installing Perian if you insist on using the quicktime player. It may supply the codec it needs.
Not sure why you wouldn't be able to play straight avi files though in quicktime. -

In addition to Kappy's comments, the external drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in order for Time Machine to be able to back it up.

Is it possible to use an external hard drive for time machine backup and also as a regular hard drive?
I am using an external drive in the exact way that you described. You just keep it plugged in to the computer when you want to access the movies and files. In order to put files on it, just go to finder open up the drive under devices and drag and drop files onto the drive. It is just like using a usb drive with a terabyte of space.

when i click on my external hard drive the screen goes dark and a msg pops up saying i have to shut down my computer by holding the power button and then restart it. when i do that i get the same result every time. it worked perfectly last night..

Ifou don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway. -
Utility in Snow Leopard to check sectors of external hard drive
I have valuable data on two external hard drives. Is there a utility in Snow Leopard that can be used to check that all the data on the drives is in good condition (that there are no bad sectors on the drive)? If so, please point me to an article, instructions, etc. on how to use it and if not, does a third party vendor make such a utility and if so who and what is it called?

But to find bad sectors, also called bad blocks, TechToolPro will find them. I rarely use TTP though.... to the point where I think I wasted my money. It helped one time, so I guess that paid off considering what Tech's charge.
The only way to fix bad blocks is to back up to another drive and reformat. Clone it over using the free demo of SuperDuper.
Boot up on your install disk; put disk in and restart while holding down the C key till you get the Install screen.
Don't click on install, go to the Installer menu in the upper lefthand corner of the screen, go to Disk Utilities, choose the drive you want to be free of bad blocks, click on the Erase button, click on Security Options And click the Erase button next to it. Don't choose 7 or 9 way zero........(if it asks for it )....it takes forever and you don't need it !
This will map out any bad blocks on your drive. Then clone your backed up data back to the fresh zeroed out drive.

Sorry for the newbie question, but new to macs. I have an external hard drive, from my PC days that I would like to connect to my late 2013 iMac. I would like to scan for viruses. Does Yosemite contain any such virus scanner?
Want to make sure its clean when i connect it...

while your mac will not execute a Windows-centric virus from the web it's still vulnerable to other attacks; malware, web services vulnerabilities, java script, python script, phony websites or phony packaging of software that tell you your "flash" needs an upgrade and you download something that looks to be a legitimate installer but in now way is, or a download helper someone pulls down from a sharing site that is a recompiled keylogger/screen capture app that has someone watching on the other end of the world as you put in your credit card info.
Since the web has evolved into a far more versatile platform that it was 5 or 10 years ago many unscrupulous types are including delivery systems that are no longer just Windows only, as many attacks no longer need to be bundled in a windows executable file. If anyone tries to make the argument that macs don't get virus it's completely erroneous and dangerous to the casual user. Mac users can and do get them, we just don't get them to the degree Windows users get them, at least for now. -
Using an external hard drive with an airport extreme and HP computer
- I recently bought the airport extreme, and also bought a Seagate external hard drive for my music files. I can see the hard drive on the airport utility but cannot access it or find where to access it. I am using an HP computer with windows 7.
Help please!The AirPort Extreme cannot share out the attached Seagate USB hard drive if it is formatted in NTFS or ExFat. Please check to see that it is formatted in either FAT32 or HFS+ (Apple format).
If it is already formatted in either of the latter two formats, then verify that the AirPort Utility can properly identify the hard drive by using the AirPort Utility for Windows.

I cannot connect my external hard drives any longer. I have one WD "My Passport" used as a Time Capsule and one LaCie Porsche Design used for all different kind of data, formatted in exFAT. They worked fine, connected direct or through an additional USB hub or also attached to a Dell monitor. The Lacie helds my iTunes Library and the iPhoto library.
After I moved the iTunes library to the external drive, from time to time the drive went into a never ending loop and I had to shut down the laptop (MacBook Air).
The last time starting again the drives were not recognized any longer. I tried to connect them to another MacBook, which didn't work.
Starting with Windows 7, the WD is also not recognized at all (perhaps because of time capsule format?) and the LaCie gives an error.
Could anybody tell me if there is a chance to get them alive again? When I connect them now, they start to heat up quite fast without anything else happening.

Just want to clarify, have you checked to make sure the cords are not damaged (going from hard drive to computer and or any power source )?
You have also check to make sure that usb ports are working correctly?
If you have checked these things it may be that the external drives have failed.
I would google the error message from the LaCie drive before I do anything.
There are several ways that I know of, one is to put the hard drive in the freezer for a while (make sure you wrap it air tight) if this works it is not a permenint fix. You might be able to transfer information to another source.
The other method is to plug the hard drive into a hard drive connector a product like this:

to do this you would have to remove the hard drive from its enclosure and still this is not a guarantee it will work.
The finally way I know is using a recovery service. This can be rather expensive, and there are no guarantees
