Checkbook writing software

Does anyone know of a software that I can install on my Mac Pro laptop that will allow me to print out checks ?
I write many checks for business and would like to fill out my checks on line then print out.
Thanks,
DK

Hi DK,
I don't use it and don't know its capabilities, but check out Quicken.

Find an app you like.  Contact the developer of that app and see if they are interested.

  • Report Writing Software

    Hi there,
I am trying to find a report writing software (other than SSRS) that allows us to write a relatively simple report. The report basically shows a collection of investments in a portfolio. We show company name, total cost, total value, gain/loss, and the return
    multiple.
The data is stored on a SQL server so this report writing software would need to be able to pull that data from a SQL database.
Can anybody give me a few suggestions of software solutions that could do such a thing?
Any advice is much appreciated as I do not have very extensive experience in this field.
    Thanks,
    Andreas

Excel is the most universal tool for writing reports. You can have basic ability using charts with report templates or advanced abilities with pivot tables, Power View, Query and Map. Connecting to any data source is easy with Power Query.

Best technical writing software to replace FrameMaker

Try the Demo of Pagestream, it can do "Books:...

    Text Marks
Using text marks for cross-referencing documents: You can use text marks for adding cross-references in your documents. When you insert a text mark before a section, you assign a name to it and add it to the list of text marks. Later, if you want to refer the reader to a specific section, you would simply insert the text mark's page number by choosing the text mark's name from the list of text marks. PageStream will then insert the page number automatically without making it necessary for you to search for the corresponding section to find the correct page number. Additionally, if you later edit the text or move sections so as to change the text marks' locations, the text marks' page numbers will be updated automatically by PageStream.

  • Best DVD writing software?

Just made the switch from PC to Mac and loving it. Before attempting and possibly wasting a DVD-R, what's the best way (and/or software) to write .MOV files to a DVD-R?
I have videos from lectures in class that I want to write to DVDs.

Never mind, read up on iMovie and iDVD a lot and figured it out!

I've heard that [fill in blank] is now industry standard.

If the MacWorld/SF site is still active you might be able to search for this application. I was there and recall seeing something in the small developer area.
    Also look at versiontracker.com
It's time to upgrade...OS9 development stopped 4+ years ago

  • SP L10 - DVD writing software - Where is Recordnow!

I've got a L10 with the DVD Super multidrive. According to the manual, Recordnow! Basic is included in the pre-installed software to allow me to write DVD's. Where is it - I can't find it on the C drive or on the utilities CD.

    Hi,
RecordNow should be located under Start, Programs, Sonic.

  • I've been writing software for 33yrs. I've many apps. I'd like to use html/xml to replace my aging IDE's. Firefox will no longer execuate a binary directly called from hypertext on the local system. Why?

I would rather not re-write the old IDE's I've been using for years but rather replace them with html/xml web style pages. Konqueror will locally execute binaries with a launcher script. Firefox, Chrome, re-Konq, WebPositive, and IE Explorer will not. If Firefox or SeaMonkey would execute my binaries I could easily replace the old IDE's and save myself and my clients a lot of time and money.

That isn't acceptable. I guess that if you don't want to tell me I'll go to Opera or Chrome and ask. I could simply disassemble the code. That takes a long time. 270 Clients some running software that was written as fare back as 1979. I know I'm small, but they have families and business to run. The cost of re-developing the IDE's is huge for small business. I had hoped you would help.

  • How to install arabic writing software

I need to type in arabic language and I do not know how can I install the softwere or from where I can get it. Is there any way how to dowload it from the apple store.
    Thanks

There is no need to install anything.  You go to system prefs/language & text/input sources and check the boxes for the Arabic keyboads you want, plus the box for Show Input Menu in Menu Bar, plus the box for Keyboard Viewer.  Then you select Arabic in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen and type.  Select Keyboard Viewer from the same place to see which key does what.
Note that MS Word for Mac does not support Arabic and Pages has too many bugs.  Mellel is the best, while TextEdit, Nisus, and OpenOffice should also work OK.

  • Things and Software to avoid when authoring for DVD-V

This one is always in the earlier, 1.X FAQ, but is so important it should be repeated here too.
There have been so many posts along the line of "I cannot burn my DVD in Encore, but Nero works well" that I thought I should share this info with you all.
As we know, DVD Authoring is very dependant on timing, and on not having other apps getting in the way & locking up the burners, So here is a list of software that is known to interfere with GEAR drivers. It is a raging cert that this also applies here, as all authoring apps are the same sort of thing.
These 3rd party apps are junk software, to be quite blunt (I expect to get flamed over this, but I cannot help the truth), and should never be installed on an Authoring system.
Anyway, here is the current list of
    i known problem software.
    1. B's Clip: This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove programs, then reboot to remove it. For more information, visit the B's website at http://www.bhacorp.com.
    2. Direct CD or Drag to Disk: These are applications from Easy CD Creator from Roxio. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start windows. To remove them you need to do to Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel. There you can select Easy CD Creator to change, not remove. Then you must click next until it gives you the option to modify. Then either Direct CD or Drag to Disk should be selected and changed to "make this option not available". Then click next and while the program may look like it is installing, it is removing those options. One thing to remember is that both Direct CD and Drag to Disk will not be installed at the same time. For more information, please visit Roxio's website at http://www.roxio.com/en/support.index.jhtml
    3. GoBack: backup software that constantly runs in the background (Terminate and Stay Ready) this needs not only to be turned off, but disabled. Unfortunately, this may cause some restore points to vanish, but it will free up a lot of hard drive space. For more information visit Symantec's web site for GoBack at http://www.symantec.com/goback/index.html
    4. DLA: Also HP-DLA, Veritas DLA, and others. DLA stands for Disk Letter Assignment. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove programs, then reboot to remove it.
    5. InCD: This is packet writing software that comes bundled with Ahead Nero Burning Rom. For more information go to Nero's website at http://www.nero.com/en/
    6. Interactual Player and PC Friendly Player: These programs are DVD software viewers that often come on DVD movie discs, and will try to install themselves everytime you watch a movie on your computer. Please make sure to NOT let these install. Both programs interfere with all DVD Authoring software and should be un-installed from Add or Remove programs in control panel when found. In some cases, you will need to uninstall and reinstall your software to restore functionality after removing one of these. For more information about both players, visit http://player.interactual.com/
    7. McAfee Anti-Virus: This is anti-virus software that when running, can cause errors. It needs to be disabled by right clicking on the icon in the lower right side of the task bar. Your DVD Authoring software then needs to be restarted. Whenever you are using your software, McAfee needs to be disabled to ensure unrestricted access to your drive. For more info go to McAfee's website at http://us.mcafee.com/default.asp
    8. Norton Anti-Virus: This is anti-virus software that when running, can cause errors. It needs to be disabled by right clicking on the icon in the lower right side of the task bar and the automatic updates should be disabled. Your DVD software then needs to be restarted. Whenever you are using your software, Norton needs to be disabled to ensure unrestricted access to your drive. The Norton Website is http://www.symantec.com/
    9. StopZilla: StopZilla can hinder required portions of various installers, causing the software to fail. Please completely disable StopZilla, then install your software. Once our software is installed, you may safely enable it again. If you have any difficulty using your software at a later time, you may need to disable StopZilla before going to use your software. Uninstallation is not required.
    10. MyStorageGuard: This backup software can hinder certain required files from being copied during the installation. Please disable this program before installing , and have it disabled any time you go to use your DVD Authoring software. Uninstallation is not required.
    11. Napster 2.0: This software includes some basic burning software that can cause burning problems if it is running. You will need to close this program completely before trying to use DVD Authoring software. In some rare cases, you will need to completely uninstall this package to attain full reliability, so if disabling does not solve your issue, please try uninstalling this software, and try again.
    12. Easy CD Creator 4.x: Due to the age of this package, it is no longer updated by the authors. There are bugs present in this older system that will cause NUMEROUS problems on your machine. Please Uninstall completely, and consider either the new 6.x version from Roxio ( http://www.roxio.com ) or Nero 6.x ( http://www.nero.com ). These packages, installed without the Packet Writing software (DirectCD/Drag to Disk/InCD), all work very well with DVD Authoring software.
    13. Spyware and Adware - some programs can install other software that can be damaging to your Operating System. Please scan for these programs with a Spyware utility. We recommend Ad-Aware, available freely at http://www.lavasoftusa.com
    14. Disable the Windows XP packet writing utility. To do so, go to My Computer, Right click oon your DVD burner, choose Properties. Find the "Recording" tab. Uncheck "Enable CD recording on this drive" While you are there, switch off all AutoRun options too. It means going through each option and then selecting "Take No Action" as the default option. AutoRun will "poll" the drive every few minutes to look for a new disc, and if it finds one it will try to open it.
    15. Symantec PCAnywhere has been reported to cause problems with Encore as the awvid5.dll file it installs is a video driver designed to facilitate the transfer of screen information from one computer to another. Sadly, this causes a conflict which can cause XP to restart - or give a bluescreen if the "Automatically restart" option has been unticked, giving a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA stop condition.
Another crash can be reproduced by
    a) Open a project
    b) Add an MPEG file and associated WAV file as assets
    c) Link the MPEG file to a menu button by dragging
    d) Encore creates a Timeline for the MPEG file automatically
    e) Open the new Timeline
    f) Drag the MPEG's WAV file into the timeline's audio track
    g) Close the Timeline
    h) Repeat (b)-(d)
    i) When the new Timeline is double-clicked, XP restarts
    The
    i only
solution found so far is to uninstall PCAnywhere, then all returns to normal.
    16. It has also been found that either Efax or Winfax software installed to the system can cause the dreaded "Visual C++ Runtime Error" which will crash Encore. Microsoft support have confirmed that if you see this error, you need a hotfix KB884538, from www.microsoft.com in the support area.
Install the hotfix, and if the error remains, check for either of these fax programs. If either are present, remove them, reboot and all should now work.
    17. Roxio Easy CD Creator - General issues.
Firstly, when uninstalling any Roxio application it is best to do this from the "Add Remove Programs" applet in Control Panel, as usual. However - this will NOT remove all Roxio's tentacles from your system. To be sure all is definitely removed, you need to visit
    http://www.microadvantage.net/downloads/zapper60.zip
and run this. When you are done, you can then reboot and the evil Roxio will finally be gone.
Another common issue with Roxio is when Nero also co-exists on the same system. The two
    i loathe
each other and are apparently incapable of co-existing.
If you have noth these installed there is an additional set of stuff to go through. Remove Roxio first, then reboot, then remove Nero completely beginning by uninstalling from "Add Remove Programs" and then we also need to get rid of all the various tendrils it has also addeed to the system using the following tools:
(You must use all 3 of Nero's Clean tools in order to do the job correctly.)
They can all be found here:
    http://www.nero.com/us/631940828445001.htm
    1. General Clean tool
    2. Registry cleaner and driver cleaner
    3. InCD Clean tool
When you reinstall Nero 6.6 OR Neros new 7 Ultra Edition, DO NOT install InCD OR if you do, turn it off in startup under msconfig (better to not install it)
    18 - FindSounds Palette
This is a tool designed to help you find SFX on your drives, and it seems to prevent Encore from importing M2V files for some reason, and should be uninstalled if present.
To uninstall this, do the following steps:
Uninstall "Find Sounds Palette" (FS Palette).
Delete the two registry key folders for "Comparisonics".
    Uninstall Encore CS3.
    Delete Registry Keys for Encore.
    Restart.
    Install Encore CS3.
    Install Encore 3.0.1 update.
    Restart.
    19 - Quicken
It has been reported that if you back up your Quicken files to CD, then Quicken sets up your DVD burner for CD DLA through the built-in Windows burning facility.  This assignment recurs each time your system is restarted.  When this happens, Encore will see your burner as a CD burner only.  You'll have to manually disable this start-up assignment to get Encore to see your burner as a DVD burner again.
Additionally, it is a good idea to disable Autorun for your burner, preferably from the registry. While this will not prevent anything polling the drive from the OS to try & "helpfully" check for freshly inserted media, it will prevent sneaky DRM applications from installing themselves to your system just by having the disc inserted. As well as the registry hack required, there are other methods of stopping this described at
    http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-018
To do the registry hack, perform the following:
    * Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
    * Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom.
    * Double-click the Autorun value, and type 0 for its value. (If it's not there, create it by selecting Edit -> New -> DWORD Value, and typing "Autorun" for its name.)
    * You may have to log out and then log back in for this change to take effect.
    * Note: With this solution, Windows will no longer be notified when you insert a new CD. To make sure the correct icon and title for the current CD are displayed in My Computer and Explorer, press F5 to refresh the window.
If you perform any of these changes, you may need to uninstall your software, then re-install to fix any damage left. If you find some of these packages, please shut down and reboot twice to ensure that the last pieces of the conflicting software are completely removed.

    You're lucky then Steve.
Roxio is one of those apps that usually doesn't play nice with any other burning software at all.
I use GEAR Pro Mastering Edition.
They also do a cheaper version called GEAR Video - but be aware that this installs DivX as well - although I have to say that on one of our systems running Adobe 1.5 versions of Encore & Premiere Pro, it is causing no conflicts at all. But there have definitely been major problems with DivX codecs and EncoreDVD. Perhaps it is to do with where they come from, perhaps I just got lucky in this case.
It might be worth a trial version though - although if you have the budget, and do a LOT of DVD, then GEAR Pro Mastering Edition is an invaluable tool I have found.

  • Adobe air with flex, file new, open and save for Desktop software program

I already have a headache from all the searching. I cannot believe this to be such a confusing topic as every software program we create must be able to save user input, right.
    Here is the problem:
Novel writing software program Main window has tabnavigator with four navigatorcontent pages 1. characters, 2. worlds, 3. objects, 4. Editor
Each navigatorcontent page has user input fields in the form of textinput component, textarea component, richtexteditor component, etc.
    problem 1:
The user needs to be able to open a new project and give it a name and state where it must be saved. All user input in the Novel writing software program must be attached to the file name the user specified - cannot give sample code cause I don't even know where to start looking anymore.
    Problem 2:
If the user has now defined a new project name, all his input from the different input components has to be compiled into a single file that can be saved. (Dan Pichelman gave me a satisfactory answer on using the file.borwseforsave funtion.) That makes sense, but I first need to get all the user input into that single file. I was convinced that it must be an xml file and that there would be a guide on how to do this but...
    Problem 3:
This brings me to another problem. All the pages I've researched so  far tell me how to load data from an xml file into a component, but not how to write the text from the component into the xml file. And this xml file cannot be the prefs file in the storage directory, it has to be named by the user and then after filling in all his text in the different tabs of the software, must be saved in this xml file and saved where the user chooses.
    Problem 4:
now that the user put in his text and it is written to an xml file that he has named and set the path to, he goes on vacation and in two weeks opens his saved file to work on his project again. All the data that was stored in the xml must now be written back into the different user input components so he can continue working on his project, truth be told, there are some samles and tutorials on this subject, but again from only a single page perspective not a multiple tab perspective.
    Problem 5:
Now the user has deleted and/or changed some text he put in when he started, he wrote some more text in the textareas and texteditor and he clicks the file - save button. The xml file or whatever needs to be used must be updated and saved with all the changes overwriting the old file.
    Problem 6:
The data entered by the user will end up being a book of say 400 pages. This data will obviously be mostly in the richtexteditor component, so whatever method of saving is used, database or xml or whatever, needs to be able to contain all this data.
Thought, if you are working with for instance, microsoft powerpoint, it has multiple pages all containing different user inputs and when you click flie - save, it saves all that input into one file. When I as a user opens that saved file it loads all that content back into its place and I can change and manipulate the input and save it again. I would have thought this would be one of the first things adobe or any other software would teach as this is what sofware programs are all about. But alas, the tutorials on this subject for adobe air for Desktop application is extreeeeemely rare.
My promise is, if someone can help me with this or there is a tutorial out there that covers this properly I  will write a tutorial on this for other newbies as I progress step by step.
    Pleeeeeeease help this ignorant novice
    Regards

to save a file you would do something like:
    FileWriter fw = new FileWriter( fileName );
    textComponent.write( fw );
fw.close();See the JFileChoose API for filtering files by extension. The API gives an example.

  • Mac users DO NOT use this Desktop software! it will cause hours of heartache

I have exactly the same issue with a Bold and have still to find any option to resolve the issue other than to entirely wipe the device and go through the tiresome process of reinstalling and updating everything to the way i had it.
I am utterly furious with myself for trusting RIM to release a desktop option for Mac users. I choose a Blackberry for its push email and i love the device very much, even despite Initially going through 6 Bolds until i received a new one from Vodafone UK that was not reconditioned and finally worked properly. Since then everything has been fine until this amateur attempt at writing software for Mac users.
I don't have a lot of time to myself and i can think of nothing worse than spending the little time i have searching through endless ill concieved solutions that simply do not work. Just by plugging in my Bold and hitting sync has destroyed my contacts, ringtones and other settings. Why bother to release software until it is entirely tested? Why would you want to put your customers through this demorolising procedure which does nothing more than further emphasise your true lack of interest in supporting anything Mac. I dont want an iphone, i believe that your phones aresuperior for business users like myself.
Please, please, if you are a Mac user DO NOT use this software unless you really want to go through hell just trying to get it back to the customised form you spent loving hours to get right. It destroys your address book and other elements and not one solution posted anywhere on the Blackberry web site works. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
The reason i am a Mac users is because i need a reliable hardware/software solution that works out of the box. It is entirely obvious that RIM havent quite realised the long term benefits of this really very simple idea!

    thecount wrote:
well, I attempted to use it, but I initially just tried syncing just the tasks and it would not do that!  so I gave up and uninstalled.
I now have been trying to sync with pockmac but that also has issues.
Only reason I am not going to get an iphone, is that I really need to sync with entourage and I use notes on it extensively. and I don't think you can sync an iphone with entourage notes?
    can't win can we?
this was one reason i've been sticking with the blackberry as well. it appears though that now you can... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1670
i really have liked my blackberry, and have been waiting for this software for some time now, but if this is rims idea of a client i have no choice but to go to the iphone...

  • Software developed before being hired litigation

This is my first post so please bear with me if I'm in the wrong place. I have a question which has more legal aspects associated with than technical.
I was asked by my ex employer to develop a demo website for one of their customers. To speed up the development of the demo in addition that we didn't have much time, I pulled out one of my old applications I have developed for one of my projects 2 years ago, and where much of its functions are being used by another application of my current customers such as Treeview navigation, users and groups and tabs navigation modules. It was in good faith and just to help them out speed up the demo and have something very quickly otherwise I would have never done that but just created some static screenshots.
So I took (copy/pasted) that application, created a new photoshop template with new icons and all the stuff and made some minor modifications to fit the whole thing fit with the ex employer demo requirements. The ex employer was impressed with how speedy the "development" of the demo was going into thinking that it was from scratch even if I was trying to make it clear that it wasn't the case.
Now after I got abusively fired by the ex employer for a reason that isn't relevant to be discussed here, he, as I'm sure you could guess, asked for the demo code. I provided them with the photoshop (psd layers file), the icons and other graphics and a complied (Java class files) version of the demo and told them that that what belongs to them.
The case of the firing will be soon heard in court in the coming months and I'm sure they will try to bring out the demo litigation even if it is not related to the case in an attempt to try to discredit me.
My question is how should I deal with this in court and how best to go about this before people who would have little if any computer and software knowledge since obviously I don't want to hand out the source code that I was working on for years before being hired by the ex employer?

I'm not a lawyer, but in most cases for things like writing, software development, etc., stuff is created as works-for-hire, which means that the employer owns all rights for work done as an employee.
If the stuff you gave the employer was used somewhere else already (and there are already paying customers for it), then arguably you didn't have the right to give the employer the code.
But all this is moot if you were never actually employed. If he paid you nothing, you owe him nothing. I suspect it would be very hard indeed for his lawyer to suggest that he owns all these materials if you were never compensated in any way for it or the additional effort you put in tweaking it.
Whenever I start a new job, there is pretty much always an addendum to the employment contract that lists prior inventions (which are thus not transferred to the new employer). Presumably, if you were hired by this employer, you would have listed this software on that addendum. If you didn't list it but signed a contract he probably wouldn't own the software, but it would be much harder to prove that. But since no contract was ever negotiated or executed (right?), I don't see how he could even use that.
In short: if there was no contract, and no payment on his side, it's ridiculous to assert that he owns everything. I suppose he could argue there was a verbal contract, but that would be difficult to prove anyway, and nearly impossible to believe if there is no compensation. I believe that contracts in which one side gains nothing are often considered void -- both sides gaining something is one of the bases of a valid contract.
So if you're telling the truth, the only way he could win this is if he's lying, possibly via a convincing lawyer.
Just hire an additional lawyer if you have to for god's sake. You probably don't need a software law specialist, because prior works as a principle probably applies to all kinds of work-for-hire contracts, but if your lawyer feels s/he needs the help, then just do it.
And don't work for scumbags next time. Anybody that insists on you working before signing a contract is suspect.

  • IDVD keeps writing discs that fail around 5 minutes in and cant be read

    Hi,
I've been trying to write some DVD's as christmas presents.
The recent ones have contained around 90 mins of footage (2 video files), originally in .avi format of around 700mb each. When shown in IDVD, it says the 2 files will take up 3GB of the 4.2GB disc, and have been written in idvd 7, using "professional quality" encoder.
However, having just gone to test the DVDs, I've tried fast forwarding through all the files, to check they all work properly, and at certain stages (i.e. 6 mins in) my DVD player saying "trying to read media" and the picture freezes, etc. and then goes all odd and jumpy.
I have written 2 identical DVDs, and this happens on both, but at different points in the time of the movie (both were not written in the same session though) so it obviously isnt something wrong with the video files themselves. I am wondering what could be causing this problem? It's the sort of errors in playing that you'd tend to get if there was a scratch on the DVD, but these DVDs are brand new and i've checked and the mac isn't scratching the discs!
Does anyone have any advice? Is this a common problem that can be fixed by fiddling with any settings? I really need to get these things written in time for Friday! Could anyone recommend an alternative free DVD-writing software as a last case scenario (as i really like the menu systems that iDVD offers)

    Hi
My thoughts (for what they are worth ? ? )
    • free alternative - I don't know
    • Burned DVD that doesn't work - Instead Save as a DiskImage and test this first and if it works OK burn it by using Disk Util tool
Just moving files from DeskTop/Finder - will burn BUT not a Video-DVD but a Data-DVD and this will not play in any DVD-player
    • .avi - most probably the culprit. This is no specific file format or codec and most often do not work on any Mac (iMovie or iDVD) - it is sort of a folder and can contain codecs that works for burning or not
first: find out what's in the .avi container - Open it with QuickTime-player and open Inspector and read codec: -------
second: convert it into a codec iDVD can use e.g. streamingDV .dv or aic
thirdly: use this converted movies instead.
    • Burn speed - set it down to x4 (max)
    • DVD brand used - I use Verbatim
    • DVD type used - I use DVD-R as they play on more players - NEVER DVD+/-RW
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk - I never go under 25Gb - other hard disks of no interest at all - neither iDVD or Mac OS can address them for temp. files during process.
