"Checking In" tunes in iTunes

Hi,
Can someone please help?
I have recently transferred my music files to an external hard drive. In the "advanced" option of iTunes I have changed the location in which I wish iTunes to look for the music files and specified the correct location on the external drive, so far so good.
Almost every time I open iTunes (not every time though), a large number of tracks have an exclamation mark next to them and I have to manually locate the track and click on it in the external iTunes music file to "check" it in to iTunes. I have well over 7000 tracks and its hugely frustrating doing this with hundreds of tracks, only to find on the next iTunes start up, that it has done it again with hundreds of different tracks.
I have not manually moved any of the files in the iTunes music folder and I have tried to "consolidate the library" (just to see if it made any difference, but of course the idea of the external drive was to free up space rather than make another copy). Sometimes it seems that iTunes will (seemingly of its own accord) go back to looking in the local music library as opposed to the external copy. I assume this is what is causing the problem although I am not sure how to go about remedying the problem. I am running iTunes 5 with Tiger.

Sorry I can't help on this subject but I'm having the same problem on 2 machines (one running Panther and one Running Tiger) and it started with upgrading to iTunes 5.
The whole idea was to store all my CDS on my external drive but iTunes 5 reverts back to storing most (but not all) files right back in the music folder in the home folder on my hard drive.
Is there a work around?
Should I move that whole Music folder out of the home folder and to my external drive? or will iTunes just keep creating a new one?
Is there any way to get rid of iTunes 5 and reload 4.9 from my iLife disk (I've heard people complain that they can't reload an older version.

In list view, select the album column. To choose which columns appear, select an item on the left side of the window (a playlist, for example), choose View > View Options, and select the information you want to see. You can also Control-click a column heading to select columns to display.
The column selected determines how tracks are displayed. For example, clicking the "Name" column displays all tracks in alphabetical order; clicking the "Album" column displays the tracks in album order; clicking the "Date Added" column displays the tracks in the order that they were imported into your library. Columns also have a disclosure arrow at the right of the column (when selected) that you can click to reverse the order.

You uncheck the music in your iTunes library on your computer and along with sync only checked songs and videos selected under the Summary selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, only checked songs in your iTunes library will be transferred to your iPhone or remain on your iPhone and the unchecked songs in your iTunes library that are currently on your iPhone will be removed when syncing.
Or make use of iTunes playlists and choose selected playlists, albums, artists under the Music selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and select the playlists below that you want transferred to your iPhone.

I get the following message, when trying to check for updates on itunes:- "The iTunes update server could not be contacted. Please check your internet connection or try again later".

My firewall (both anti virus firewall and windows firewall, are set up to allow itunes programme to work) - I also have set both internet explorer and chrome to allow
apple website as an exception.
However, I still get the same error message... can anyone help?

Try updating your iTunes using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) installer file downloaded from the Apple website:

Lion 10.7.2 Finder does not see many tunes in iTunes 10.5

Starting with iTunes 10.5 (141) 64-bit, on my MacBook Air with Lion 10.7.2, many tunes that iTunes sees are not seen in the Finder. And they can no longer be synced to my iPhone 4 with iOS5. How can I fix this?

Ok, so, the best FIRST test is to try from the local lan, same lan as the Lion server. L2TP works fine for me, PPTP definitely has a bug. You can configure the VPN connection in your network system preferences on the client machine. Just put in your local server IP.
The idea here is to first make sure VPN works on the LAN (which is useless of course but great for troubleshooting), once it does, THEN you can go to the next step and troubleshoot the remote connection.

I noticed on the summary page it says, "sync only checked songs and videos" well I have that box checked.

How to delete tune without iTunes

I have a problem, I have some old podcast which I like to keep on my harddrive. Then I got the ipod, so I want to store the podcast episodes there. But dragging direct from Finder to ipod show me it copied but didn't appear under podcast. I found out after a few trial and error that I should have added the podcast to iTunes before dragging into ipod. So...
Good : Finder -> iTunes Podcast -> iPod
Bad : Finder -> iPod
So now those files I drag direct from finder into ipod are in the ipod but I can't get rid of them, cause they don't show up in the iTunes list. It shows up in Senuti and iPodDisk, but both don't allow me to delete the song. Now I can't drag those podcast episodes in to ipod from iTunes podcast anymore. It somehow recognise that the file exist on the ipod but wouldn't list it on the podcast.

Did you try using the Finder? I'm trying to accomplish similar management tasks. Finder seems far superior to itune management, for podcasts management. This might work-- First quit itunes.
Use a finder window, not spotlight, search itunes and single-click on any folder by that name. Notice which of these files is in your startup disc (in case you have other bootable drives connected)-- Notice the little icons on the bottom of the Finder window. Double click on "iTunes Music" at the window bottom. A new Finder window should open. I recomend the list mode, selectable at the top left of Finder window. Now you should be able to view all your itune- contents on the computer. It seems these files can be deleted, but one must remeber to empty trash before going further. Unfortunately this approach won't allow adding new folders that will show up in itunes.

How to skip the currently-playing tune in iTunes 11?

How do I skip the currently-playing tune in iTunes 11 if I don't want to hear the rest of it? Clicking pause and then play just resumes that same tune, which often isn't what I want to do.
I'm using an HP laptop with the Win 7 Home Premium operating system, if this makes any difference.

In the Movies list view right click on the header row ie Name, Time, Genre etc at the top of the movie window. Select Date Added from the list. a new column Date Added will show and you can sort on this by Clicking on it.

Maybe the "iTunes Music" folder is hidden.
Please open Terminal and issue the following command
ls -ladO /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music
you should get a line similar to this
drwxrwxrwx 13 yourusername staff hidden 442 12 Mar 21:49 /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
Numbers, date and time may differ.
If you see hidden then the folder is hidden. To unhide "iTunes Music", in Terminal issue the following command
chflags nohidden /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music

Restore iPod tunes to iTunes

Hi,
My computer recently had a virus which required me to reformat my unbacked up computer. As such, all my tunes (both iTunes purchased and CD sourced) are only on my iPod. While the iTunes purchased songs are already restored, am I able to restore the other music back to my newly formatted computer? I have copied the files from the iPod to the hard disk, opened iTunes, and double clicked each file to then have it brought up in iTunes. However, this just results in the song having an apostrophe next to it and the comment that the 'original file could not be found'. Can anyone please help me with this?

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. I get the same problem running the diagnostics. Says network connections are present and in the green, but unable to connect to iTunes Store.

I downloaded the Microsoft Autoruns package and ran it. There are no programs in the LSA Providers tab, and Apple's Bonjour is the only program in the Winsock Providers tab. I also did the "netsh winsock reset" and rebooted. It didn't fix the problem. Any more ideas?

Same problem, I have a season pass for Mad Men and suddenly cannot download, says iTunes is temporarily unavailable. Problem occurred before I updated to the new iTunes and afterwards, on two different computers. Here is what Apple had to say:
